Your BTEC Level 1 qualifications explainedYour new BTEC Level 1 Introductory qualifications have been developed in response to your feedback highlighting the need for a distinct, graded Level 1 BTEC that is motivating for your learners.
They are designed to not only introduce your learners to their chosen sector but also help them develop the learning skills they will need to progress to further learning, an apprenticeship or employment.
We currently have Level 1 Introductory graded qualifications available for 15 different sectors, including a Vocational Studies qualification, and we are also looking into developing new Introductory qualifications for Entry Level learners.
All your new BTEC Level 1 Introductory qualifications are eligible for funding in England and Wales*.
These new qualifications are designed to meet the needs of a range of different types of learners, for example:
adults returning to study
learners already in work needing to up-skill
those seeking to develop greater independence
those who have not yet achieved accredited qualifications
those with specific learning needs.
Learners completing their BTEC Level 1 Introductory courses have a range of progression opportunities such as further learning at Level 1/ Level 2, an apprenticeship or employment.
* With the exception of Health and Social Care and Caring for Children which are not currently eligible for funding in Wales. Please check QIW for latest status.

Why choose BTEC Level 1 Introductory qualifications? We’ve worked closely with teachers to develop the qualifications you told us you need. We’ve kept what you liked about our current Level 1 qualifications and made changes where you asked for improvements.
Motivated and driven learners These new introductory qualifications are
designed to give your learners recognition of their achievements and the motivation to progress further.
Graded assessments will help you decide when your learners are ready to move on.
The qualifications are practical and learners are asked to demonstrate what they can do.
Support from start to finish We’ve developed our most comprehensive support yet
for Planning and Teaching these qualifications as well help with Assessing and Tracking learner progress.
Progression to further study, an apprenticeship or employment These new qualifications give your learners a
broader choice of progression routes, whether that’s to further learning, an apprenticeship or employment.
The new Personal Skills units are the same across all sectors and help learners develop their learning skills within a vocational context.
Flexible approach to assessment 100% assessed by you, with no external
assessment or exams.
You can use a variety of assessment methods so your learners have the best possible opportunity to demonstrate their skills.

Core Units Core units are common to all sectors, so you can teach all your BTEC level 1 learners together, regardless of the sector they’re studying. They will give your learners the opportunity to acquire the skills they will need to showcase their sector understanding.
Sector units The sector units give your learners the opportunity to take the skills they’ve built up in the core units and really showcase what they know and understand about their sector.
There’s a choice of optional units for every sector so you can tailor your course to meet the needs of your learners, your centre and local employers.
We’ve designed these units with progression in mind, so when your learners take the next step up, they won’t be repeating what they’ve studied at level 1.

Vocational studies For learners who prefer to study more than one sector, we’ve developed a Vocational Studies qualification. Here your learners complete the same core units but choose their optional units from across the range of sectors available.
