MISKIN MUSIC - ASSIGNMENT BRIEF 2015/16

Qualification: BTEC HNC in MUSIC 2015/16

    Theprojectbrief

This project allows you to investigate into the tools and techniques used in the creation, manipulation and production of music. The project requires hands-on practice andexperimentation, allowing you to develop your skills and build a well-rounded theoreticalunderstanding of computer music practices. You will use computers to process sound andproduce music, whilst fully understanding the tools and protocols required to do so.

Scenario A music production house is looking to employ new composers and producers and has askedapplicants to provide a portfolio of their work, along with a guide as to how the work is made. Therole will involve training other new staff, and therefore the ideal applicant must have a solidunderstanding of a variety of software and a wide range of skills and techniques to use them. The music itself should be of different genres to demonstrate the flexibility and diverse working

methods applied to computer music composition.

    Learning Outcomes

LO 1 Be able to use computersto synthesise and processsound

MISKIN MUSIC - ASSIGNMENT BRIEF 2015/16

Qualification: BTEC HNC in MUSIC 2015/16

This assignment gives you the opportunity toachieve the following DISTINCTION grades:

    Grade Descriptor IndicativeCharacteristic/s

    Contextualisation

D1Use critical reflection toevaluate own work and

    justify valid conclusions

    Self-criticism of approachhas taken place

Throughout the process you should reflect uponyour approach and make changes whereappropriate. The guide should include a justificationof the methods you adopted.

    D2Take responsibility formanaging and organisingactivities

    Activities have beenmanaged

Your sessions should be well planned and writtenout. This document should indicate how you havegiven yourself enough time to complete the varioustasks you undertake. The finished audio portfoliomust be evident that activities have been managed.

    D3Demonstrate convergent /lateral / creative thinking

    Innovation and creativethought have beenapplied

The audio portfolio must show that creative thinkinghas taken place. The techniques employed couldbe experimental or innovative in nature, but theresults should be of professional quality.

This project will require you tow work with at least 2 different Digital Audio Workstations (this couldinclude ProTools, Logic 9, Logic X, FL Studio, Ableton).

This assignment gives you the opportunity toachieve the following MERIT grades:

    Grade Descriptor IndicativeCharacteristic/s

    Contextualisation

M1Identify and applystrategies to findappropriate solutions

Complex problems withmore than one variablehave been explored.

You must propose potential problems that mayoccur when using computer music systems, anddevise creative ways in which these can be rectified.

M2Select / design and applyappropriate methods andtechniques

A range of methods andtechniques have beenapplied

You must be able to demonstrate and explain thesound processing functions of a DAW, and highlightthe importance of a range of corrective and creativeparameters found within.

    M3Present and communicateappropriate findings

Coherent, logicaldevelopment ofprinciples/concepts for theintended audience

There should be a step-by-step account of processof using this software. The guide must be wellpresented with annotated diagrams and illustrations, and written in such a way that it does not haveexpectations of the readers, nor patronise them.

    TASKS EVIDENCE

    Task 1LO1

Prepare for a number of computer music recording sessions. Determine the hardwareand software required, and propose the techniques you will employ for sound editing. In your written guide describe various synthesis techniques. Set up the computers anddemonstrate a number of exercises that show sound processing.

    Task 2

    LO4

Plan for the production of a computer-based music piece. Ensure that the composition

is using computer music technology, then mix and master the music.

    Audio

    Portfolio

    Task 3LO2,LO3

Produce a guide that explains in detail how you produced your compositions and whattechniques you undertook. Explain MIDI and its devices/protocols. Assess a range ofhardware controllers and the parameters devices and software allows. With referenceto your recordings, evaluate the tools and the techniques employed.
