BTEC extended diploma in the Built Environment
What is the course about?
This nationally recognised Level 3 qualification
will provide knowledge and its application in
technical areas that are directly relevant to the
changing needs of construction, planning and the
built environment. Key issues of health, safety
and welfare, science and maths, sustainability,
surveying, design, construction technology and
the use of IT, as well as personal qualities and
attitudes essential for successful performance
in working life and career development will be
covered. The awarding body is Pearson (BTEC).
Over two years you have the opportunity to
complete a course that is equivalent to three A
levels in size. Grading of these qualifications is at
Pass, Merit, Distinction or Distinction*.
How will I learn and be assessed?
You are ideally placed at this school to learn from
the local environment, city developments and
close, regular contact with our industry sponsors.
You will see our new school being built and will
be involved at every stage, learning about the
challenges of construction. You will be learning
a good proportion of the curriculum via project
based learning. In class, you will be set practical
challenges, applying your knowledge to solve
the task or problem. Most units have written
assignments and you will be making a regular
commitment to preparing for, and writing up, your
assignments, as well as preparing for external
tests. Course deadlines are strict and you will find
that this training will give you important skills in
time management.
Entry requirements
At least five A*-C grades at GCSE to include
English, Mathematics and Science.

Where will this course lead to?Built environment professionals are involved in a wide
range of roles, everything that is needed from the first
idea of a project, to its location, design, structural and civil
engineering challenges, costing, project management,
finance, building services, planning and control, property
development, estate management and maintenance,
and more.
Almost all roles involve project management and team
work, a varied career which is challenging and exciting.
A wide range of careers are available to students
with this BTEC extended diploma in the Built
Environment qualification.
Something to think about...It is important to study something you enjoy, and then you
will do well in it.
As you go through the course you may even change your
mind as you explore new ideas and increase your range of
experiences to draw on.
It is also possible to progress to other sectors such as
business and management careers. The problem solving
and mathematical skills developed are sought after and
the generic skills of time management, team working,
report writing, analysis and evaluation are transferable to
other careers.
This course will prepare you well for apprenticeships
or for university study. There are many apprenticeship
opportunities which offer you an excellent chance to earn
as well as learn. You will be trained in the skills needed
by their business and offered opportunities to develop
your professional career with them. Students can apply
for apprenticeships which usually allow them to trial in a
number of areas before specialising. Many large building
and civil engineering projects are committed to employing
a number of apprentices, these companies are not
household names, but they employ a lot of people and
have great opportunities.
