COLUMNS

Oh noes! It’s our final year at uni, and we have to apply for a graduate position! But never fear, for this guide is here, at a price not dear, just try not to leer.

Step 1. Tracking and logistics.

First and foremost, you should track down com-panies which you would like to work for. (Really!? You needed me to tell you this?!....) A good start would be to attend the Careers Expo, which is on every year, run by the Careers and Employ-ment Faculty. There is a little book given out that contains ALOT of companies with information on closing dates etc. Get it.

Step 2. Battle Strategy.

The next step is to prepare a suitable resume and cover letter. The Careers and Employment Faculty runs workshops which may be of use here. For those who prefer a slightly more aggressive approach, I suppose you could hunt down your adversaries and sabotage them in a few ways (which shall be covered in another article...). Remember, a few basic things to note, a resume is a detailed re-presentation of your life. Write all the skills, hobbies, work xperiences, awards you’ve had in there. If you need help on format or layout, consult Google. The cover letter should be a *brief* outline of your strong points, and should not rehash what is in your resume. We all know the sort of things employers want (or say they want), leadership, team work, initiative and willingness to learn. These should be covered in your cover letter.

Step 3. Bag and Tag.

The final step is to apply. Remember to make yourself sound like Jesus on your applications. Also, it would be wise to notify your referees and tell (or bribe, refer to Military Tactic 1) them to say nice things. Keep in mind, that the companies will want you to answer behavioural-like questions. For these, the best way to approach them is referring to the company values, or the leadership etc etc attributes.

Military Tactic 1. Bribe subtly or you will be arrested.

Military Tactic 2. Try and apply for as many companies as you can, in other words, apply for ALL of them.

Military Tactic 3. All your base are belong to me.

On April 29th 2009, astonishing fact shows that the number of words in English language will mark a million.

Really, you ask? Of course not! According to the global monitors, the actual date may be five days either side of April, but if you check the Merriam – Webster dictionary, you’ll find that the number is way over. Then again, if you search on your beloved Oxford, you’ll find only half the figure.

Confused? I am.

And that’s what most people feel like as they start planning the next stage of their lives, unlimited by future possibilities and limited by the ‘It’s ok if you don’t get Distinction’ grades and skills, knowing what they want or hope to be in ten or twenty years time. Problem is everyone seems to be asking you to do different things, advising you to go different places, telling you to work in different areas. Ultimately, even mentioning the word ‘Grad’ will make you perplexed in many ways.

I’m not going to tell you what you should do since everyone is an individu-al. For the more passionate, life is about doing what you want. For the more cynical, life is about doing what societ-ies want. For the more political, life is about doing what societies want to do what you want.

However, having said that, keep one tip in your head. Be smart. You can be IQ smart, skill-smart, people-smart, grades-smart – be however smart you like because as long as you are smart, you will earn yourself a ticket into a possible better future.

OverviewIn June 2008, Peter Kazacos established the Social Endeavour Prize (SEP), as part of the Kazacos Foundation Grant to the CIE.

The over-arching objective of the SEP is for Students today to benefit from a greater awareness of social enter-prises. Charities too need intelligent volunteers to assist them in fund raising, and with fresh ideas.

The SEP is designed as a competition for up to 10 student teams of no more than 4 members each that are paired up with a host charity to design a new fund raising approach. The teams will then compete against each other in a finals pitch event presided over by an entrepreneurial judging panel. Three prizes will be awarded, with the 1st and 2nd place teams to spend 1 week with their charity to further develop & implement their concept.

Teams will liaise and research the charity’s fund raising environment, and propose a concept. The Charity/Team need to decide to Pitch (or abandon) by April 23rd. At that point, the Team registers for the final pitch competi-tion.

The judging criteria for the SEP are:

1. Return on Investment of the fund raising business model 2. Credibility of required Inputs & target outcomes 3. Detail of the processes to be used 4. Viability – would you repeat the approach?

Meet the Entrepreneurs

Jokes aside on April 1st, we have a serious event for all you business minded entrepreneurs. UNSW Busi-ness Society is proud to present the first of four Meet the Entrepre-neur Talk series of 2009, with guest speaker Dr Simon Poole who has 25 years experience in photonics in both academia and industry.

In October 1995 Dr Simon Poole started Indx Pty Ltd to manufac-ture Fibre Bragg Gratings (FBGs) for the optical communications systems market. Dr Poole was CEO of Indx through its acquisition by JDS Uniphase in 1997 and after the initial integration into Uniphase, he became the Technical Director of what turned into JDSU Australia which grew to a peak revenue of $100m per anum in 2001. As a suc-cessful ‘serial entrepreneur’, Simon brings considerable experience and understanding of the entrepreneur-ial process. The Industry Mentoring Program Experience:Reflections of a mentee

Yvonne Lam

The Industry Mentoring Program was a fantastic experience from a university student’s perspective because it unlocked the door to the world of networking which can be daunting to enter without any help, and also because thanks to the pearls of wisdom from my mentor about university life and their experiences in the workplace, I am now much clearer about the type of career that I want to pursue.

The IMP provided me with an excellent opportunity to meet a friendly person working in the industry with years of experience in a relaxed manner and to ask them any questions on my mind about possible career paths, while also allowing me to gain a friend and a valuable contact for future reference.

The informal structure of the program encourages you to meet with your mentor in casual settings such as coffee dates or lunch as well as chatting through emails and phone conversations, which makes it easy to bond with your mentor and seek their wise advice about how to make the most of your time at university and learn more about how the industry really works.

It is a great initiative which addresses the issue of the limited amount of accessible options for university students who want to learn about the business industry in a more interactive and personal way. I would highly rec-ommend it to anyone who would like more guidance on which direction to take for their future careers.

Applications for the 2009 UNSW Business Society Industry Mentoring Program are now open. Visit www.unswbsoc.com for more details and to apply.
