Accompanied by several professors and staff members, 24 students connected with prominent Bryant alumni and toured leading organizations that they had examined as case studies. Cultural activities included a Broadway play and the King Tut exhibit at the Discovery Times Square Exposition. Day and night, students and profes- sors engaged in thought-provoking discussions ranging from tax cuts and unemployment benefits to offshore drilling and a statewide ballot referen- dum that would have changed the official name of the State of Rhode Island. On the bus ride home, catching some zzz’s took a back seat to helping a classmate with a survey for a statistics project he was working on. “We motivate each other to do our best,” says Alaina Umbach ’13 (South Glastonbury, CT). The North Dighton, MA, senior is a Consumer Insights Intern in the Brand Strategy Department. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, she arrives at Reebok head- quarters for a 7 a.m. spin class, then works from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Through online communities and focus groups, she researches how the Reebok brand resonates with consumers, compiles com- petitive analyses on categories within the industry, and evaluates qualitative research. She’s taken part in a project that involved skateboarders on the Dew Tour in Boston and has also traveled to Dallas and Phoenix to observe focus groups. “The team I work with is small, so that allows me to spend a great deal of time working with each person,” she says. “Their wisdom and knowledge of the industry, as well as consumer research, is what I aspire to in my own career.” Even though she’s a marketing major, Pearson never thought she wanted to do market research. “These internships have shown me that I not only enjoy it but will also most likely start my career in this type of position.” She secured her initial interview through a job search site but says she would have been passed over had she not worked with the Amica Center for Honors Program members strike a pose in Times Square. Anthony Nader ’12 (Milton, MA)connected with Scott Powell ’94, vicepresident of investor relations at HaydenCommunications International. By theend of the evening, Powell offered Naderthe opportunity to shadow him thefollowing morning and invited him tobe present at the NASDAQ closingbell on Friday afternoon.

“The fact that the students are willingto accept the invitation to be in theHonors Program is a feather in theircaps because it signifies that they realizewhere they want to be in four years,”says Barry Ringelheim ’68, senior vicepresident of investments at UBS.

Behind the scenes and ahead ofthe competitionStudents were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the JetBlue OperationsCenter, a visit coordinated by HonorsProgram member and Bryant residentairline guru Dan Webb ’12 (Harrisville,RI). The group got a crash course onretail management at the Times SquareLocation of Toys“R”Us, and latermet with a senior vice president atNickelodeon.

Prior to the trip, which was organizedby CIS Associate Professor and HonorsProgram Coordinator Kenneth Sousa,students researched the companies sothey could ask questions of the execu-tives. At Toys“R”Us, questions launcheddiscussions about plans to open tempo-rary stores during the holidays, as wellas strategies for managing a large volumeof suppliers at the world’s biggest toystore. At Nickelodeon, students learnedhow the organization mitigates the riskof negative backlash associated withadvertisements that air on the network.

“Anyone can memorize theoriesand vocabulary and recall them for aquiz or a test,” says Matt Galluzzo ’11(Londonderry, NH). “But being able totake that outside the classroom andsee it applied in real life is when youreally start to learn.”

A fter completing a paid summerinternship with Reebok Interna-tional in Canton, MA, Alexandra

Pearson ’11 segued into a second intern-ship with the company – this time foracademic credit.

The North Dighton, MA, senior is aConsumer Insights Intern in the BrandStrategy Department. On Tuesdays andThursdays, she arrives at Reebok head-quarters for a 7 a.m. spin class, thenworks from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Throughonline communities and focus groups,she researches how the Reebok brandresonates with consumers, compiles com-petitive analyses on categories withinthe industry, and evaluates qualitativeresearch. She’s taken part in a project thatinvolved skateboarders on the Dew Tourin Boston and has also traveled to Dallas

and Phoenix to observe focus groups.“The team I work with is small, so

that allows me to spend a great deal oftime working with each person,” shesays. “Their wisdom and knowledge ofthe industry, as well as consumerresearch, is what I aspire to in my owncareer.”

In addition to two internships withReebok, Pearson has also completedtwo internships with Biogen, Idec inCambridge, MA, the oldest independentbiotech firm in the world. She studiedin Scotland for a semester, and spenttwo weeks in Panama, Ecuador, and theGalapagos Islands through the Sopho-more International Experience. She’s alsofound time to volunteer for Relay forLife, and participated in two communityservice projects as part of her sociologyand service learning minor, tutoringinner-city high school students andassisting at the Rhode Island Free Clinic.

It seems like only yesterday thatPearson was beginning her college searchand visited Bryant – a decision she made

because her father and uncle are alumni.“It was a beautiful spring day, and thecampus was in full bloom,” she recalls.“I compared every college I visited afterthat to Bryant, and none were able tocompete with its beauty, sophistication,and professionalism.”

Now, in her senior year, she hopes toenter the field of consumer insights,which she feels is not only the perfect fitbut also a solid foundation for a market-ing career. She believes she’s ready –well rounded and fully prepared for acareer in business.

“Any student who is consideringBryant should realize that it is more thanjust an academic experience,” she says.“It is a community where you can ex-pand your intellectual knowledge, haveincomparable experiences, and formrelationships that will last a lifetime.”

AAs the son of a college professor and a

teacher, you could say that education is

part of Professor Dietrich’s DNA. Students

describe his classes as eye-opening, challenging,

and even life changing, often sparking career

interest in law, public service, or government. In

addition to advising and mentoring his students,

he creates a supportive environment for his

colleagues – especially new professors – earning

him the “2010 Mentor of the Year” award.

Professor Dietrich is the editor of the “The George

W. Bush Foreign Policy Reader: Presidential

Speeches With Commentary,” and the author of

numerous journal articles, book chapters, and

reviews. He holds a Ph.D. in Political Science from

Johns Hopkins University, and his research and

teaching interests include international relations,

U.S. foreign policy, international security, and

human rights policy.

We asked Professor Dietrich to complete a

number of sentences for Bryant 360. We’re pretty

sure you won’t find any of this information in

his “curriculum vitae.”

When I was in high school, I wanted to be a

pediatrician because I like kids and science.

In my spare time, I spend time with my children,

watch sports, and try to get some regular exercise.

The last CD I bought was “Playing for Change.” It

features street musicians from around the world

performing in their local styles.

My students would say that I’m very organized,

focused on teaching, pretty demanding in my

expectations.

If I wasn’t teaching, I would be doing some kind of

public service or government work.

I was attracted to Bryant because I wanted to be

at a school where I knew my students – and I love

living in this part of the country

I think our students are hard working, interested

in learning more about the world, and aware that

helping the community is important.

The rigor of college-level courseworkcan be a challenge for many first-year students. Did you know the

The University has the perfect placefor students who need help navigatingtheir academic programs. The Centerfor Teaching and Learning, which housesthe Academic Center for Excellence(ACE) and The Writing Center, is staffedby well-qualified professionals and hasseveral study areas and academic labs.

ACE is dedicated to helping Bryantstudents become self-reliant, confidentlearners. Amyriad of services – such aspeer-tutoring and learning labs in math,economics, finance, and accounting – goa long way to support academic progressand help students discover which studystrategies work best for them.

“We see 75 to 90 percent of all first-year students in ACE and the WritingCenter,” says Director Laurie Hazard,Ph.D. “Our research shows that studentswho use ACE services three to five times

or more per semester typically see a .5increase in their GPAs.”

Alexandra DiGregorio ’12 (Charlton,MA) uses the Center’s study labs andtakes advantage of regular one-on-onetutoring appointments. “ACE is a greatresource available on campus for extrahelp, advice, or some guidance,” shesays. “Questions always arise whiledoing work, so why not seek help ratherthan remain confused.”

The ability to write clearly and effec-tively is a critical skill in any professionalfield and key to success in many courses.The Writing Center offers one-on-oneservice with professional writing special-ists and student writing consultantsthrough all stages of the writing process,including brainstorming, outlining, thesisdevelopment, and draft editing.

“We work with students to improvetheir own writing, rather than just ‘fixing’mistakes,” says Hazard. “With the helpof ACE and the Writing Center, studentsdevelop the strategies and skills theyneed to succeed in their fields of studyand in their careers.”

Throughout the semester, ACE andThe Writing Center also hold workshopson issues such as time management,prepping for finals, and writing aresearch paper.

CLASS OF 2010 I Where are they now? For 2010 grad, marketinghas its appeal

As a business developer for Media-peel, a marketing firm that special-izes in content development and

delivery using traditional and newmedia, Justin Andrews ’10 works closelywith prospects and existing clients andanalyzes trends in the industry. When hejoined the Lincoln, RI, firm in June, the2010 graduate hit the ground running.

“Bryant prepared me to look at organ-izations from a number of perspectivesand to evaluate strategies from both aquantitative and qualitative standpoint,”says Andrews, of Spencer, MA. “Thisknowledge and experience is crucial inhelping me to understand what I’m look-ing for and how to solve problems.”

To say that Andrews had a hand inhis own success is a bit of an understate-ment. He set goals for himself from thestart of his education. He held four in-ternships and made the Dean’s List everysemester, graduating Summa Cum Laudefrom the Honors Program. In addition,he helped coordinate Bryant’s 2009Elevator Pitch Competition.

He was also part of the marketingclass that competed to name an innova-tive Intermodal transportation systemat Rhode Island’s T.F. Green Airport.Marketing Lecturer Jean Murray threwdown the challenge, teams were formed,and the students met with representa-tives of the Rhode Island Airport Corpo-ration (RIAC).

Andrews and his team set aboutdeveloping a logo, tagline, brand, and alist of reasons why their suggestionsmade sense. Andrews, who was interningat Mediapeel, spent extra time developinglogos with the company’s graphic soft-ware. The group presented the conceptand a number of variations to the RIACteam, which resulted in the students col-laborating with the RIAC to develop thename that was finally chosen – InterLink.

For their efforts, Bryant received a$1,000 grand prize that was added toa scholarship fund in memory of Market-ing Professor Joseph Ouellette. OnOctober 27,Andrews and ProfessorMurray were among those invited to thegrand opening of InterLink. Theymingled with top state and governmentofficials and heard praise for Bryant’srole in the project. Says Andrews, “It wassuch an honor and privilege to be there.”

When he was first looking at colleges,Andrews’ search led him to severallarger schools and the top businessschools in New England. Bryant stoodout as having the best campus and themost welcoming representatives. TheHonors Program offered a challengingacademic track, he says, while co-curricular groups and events promisedan exciting social experience.

“Bryant more than fulfilled every-thing it claimed to offer on my first tour,”he says. “It gives its students everyopportunity to succeed.”

“We see 75 to 90 percent of all first-year students in ACE and the WritingCenter,” says Director Laurie Hazard,Ph.D. “Our research shows that studentswho use ACE services three to five times

or more per semester typically see a .5increase in their GPAs.”

Alexandra DiGregorio ’12 (Charlton,MA) uses the Center’s study labs andtakes advantage of regular one-on-onetutoring appointments. “ACE is a greatresource available on campus for extrahelp, advice, or some guidance,” shesays. “Questions always arise whiledoing work, so why not seek help ratherthan remain confused.”

The ability to write clearly and effec-tively is a critical skill in any professionalfield and key to success in many courses.The Writing Center offers one-on-oneservice with professional writing special-ists and student writing consultantsthrough all stages of the writing process,including brainstorming, outlining, thesisdevelopment, and draft editing.

“We work with students to improvetheir own writing, rather than just ‘fixing’mistakes,” says Hazard. “With the helpof ACE and the Writing Center, studentsdevelop the strategies and skills theyneed to succeed in their fields of studyand in their careers.”

Throughout the semester, ACE andThe Writing Center also hold workshopson issues such as time management,prepping for finals, and writing aresearch paper.

CLASS OF 2010 I Where are they now? For 2010 grad, marketinghas its appeal

As a business developer for Media-peel, a marketing firm that special-izes in content development and

delivery using traditional and newmedia, Justin Andrews ’10 works closelywith prospects and existing clients andanalyzes trends in the industry. When hejoined the Lincoln, RI, firm in June, the2010 graduate hit the ground running.

“Bryant prepared me to look at organ-izations from a number of perspectivesand to evaluate strategies from both aquantitative and qualitative standpoint,”says Andrews, of Spencer, MA. “Thisknowledge and experience is crucial inhelping me to understand what I’m look-ing for and how to solve problems.”

To say that Andrews had a hand inhis own success is a bit of an understate-ment. He set goals for himself from thestart of his education. He held four in-ternships and made the Dean’s List everysemester, graduating Summa Cum Laudefrom the Honors Program. In addition,he helped coordinate Bryant’s 2009Elevator Pitch Competition.

He was also part of the marketingclass that competed to name an innova-tive Intermodal transportation systemat Rhode Island’s T.F. Green Airport.Marketing Lecturer Jean Murray threwdown the challenge, teams were formed,and the students met with representa-tives of the Rhode Island Airport Corpo-ration (RIAC).

Andrews and his team set aboutdeveloping a logo, tagline, brand, and alist of reasons why their suggestionsmade sense. Andrews, who was interningat Mediapeel, spent extra time developinglogos with the company’s graphic soft-ware. The group presented the conceptand a number of variations to the RIACteam, which resulted in the students col-laborating with the RIAC to develop thename that was finally chosen – InterLink.

For their efforts, Bryant received a$1,000 grand prize that was added toa scholarship fund in memory of Market-ing Professor Joseph Ouellette. OnOctober 27,Andrews and ProfessorMurray were among those invited to thegrand opening of InterLink. Theymingled with top state and governmentofficials and heard praise for Bryant’srole in the project. Says Andrews, “It wassuch an honor and privilege to be there.”

When he was first looking at colleges,Andrews’ search led him to severallarger schools and the top businessschools in New England. Bryant stoodout as having the best campus and themost welcoming representatives. TheHonors Program offered a challengingacademic track, he says, while co-curricular groups and events promisedan exciting social experience.

“Bryant more than fulfilled every-thing it claimed to offer on my first tour,”he says. “It gives its students everyopportunity to succeed.”

It was a whirlwind couple of days forentrepreneurship concentrator Chiyun(Jane) Li ’12 (Tongling, China) at the

New England Startup Weekend held atBryant in October. As part of a group ofcurrent and aspiring entrepreneurs whopitched their ideas for companies, Li con-fidently presented “Bridging Cultures,”an intensive immersion camp in Chinafocused on teaching English and living inthe United States.

“While pitching my idea, I truly real-ized the impact of the education thatBryant provides me,” says Li, whose ideawas selected as one of the dozens devel-oped throughout the weekend. She re-cruited a team that included Mayreni

Hernandez ’12 (Providence, RI) and Santi-ago Paara, a high school student fromNew Jersey who hopes to enroll at Bryant.

The group worked late into the nightFriday, all day Saturday, and most of Sun-day before returning to the stage to pitcha refined idea based on their research.“During the whole weekend, I watchedand experienced the amazing process ofhow people can transform an idea into areality,” says Li. Her pitch wasn’t one ofthe top three, but that has not dampenedher enthusiasm for starting the company.Her entrepreneurial marketing teacher,Sandra Potter, taught her well.

“Professor Potter always told us thereis no failure,” says Li. “Instead, she

encouraged us to overcome obstaclesand keep trying.”

Communication major KevinMandeville ’11 (Charlton, MA) was amember of the team that placed secondamong the final pitches on Sundayevening. An experienced entrepreneur inhis own right, Mandeville has alreadylaunched a web and graphic design busi-ness called Bounce Web Solutions. “Thebest part of the weekend was the connec-tions I made and people I worked with,”he says. “I learned so much from themand will continue to do so movingforward.”

Mandeville worked on the CrossCam-pus team, which created an application

for smart phones that would make exist-ing information and maps on college Websites more searchable and user-friendlyfor visitors. The idea was pitched byEmily Gravel, a high school senior fromNew Hampshire who hopes to be part ofBryant’s Class of 2015 beginning next fall.

“Amazing weekend that I will neverforget!” she tweeted.

“In addition to programs like theNYC Experience, professors integratereal-world applications to enrich stu-dents’ understanding of the concepts wetalk about in class and read about in text-books,” she says.

For Bernard, the highlight of the tripwas the opportunity to hobnob with ac-complished Bryant alumni during a re-ception at the New York Athletic Club.The students were in awe, but the alumniwere equally impressed by the students.

Host Nick Bohnsack ’00, partner andCOO of Strategas Research Partners,lauded the students for their drive tobe the best. “Our firm interviews a lotof recent graduates from a variety ofcolleges and university, and we are con-tinually unimpressed,” he said. “Butthese students live up to the billing ofbeing honors students, and we wouldbe happy to have them work forour firm.”

Anthony Nader ’12 (Milton, MA)connected with Scott Powell ’94, vicepresident of investor relations at HaydenCommunications International. By theend of the evening, Powell offered Naderthe opportunity to shadow him thefollowing morning and invited him tobe present at the NASDAQ closingbell on Friday afternoon.

“The fact that the students are willingto accept the invitation to be in theHonors Program is a feather in theircaps because it signifies that they realizewhere they want to be in four years,”says Barry Ringelheim ’68, senior vicepresident of investments at UBS.

Behind the scenes and ahead ofthe competitionStudents were treated to a behind-the-scenes tour of the JetBlue OperationsCenter, a visit coordinated by HonorsProgram member and Bryant residentairline guru Dan Webb ’12 (Harrisville,RI). The group got a crash course onretail management at the Times SquareLocation of Toys“R”Us, and latermet with a senior vice president atNickelodeon.

Prior to the trip, which was organizedby CIS Associate Professor and HonorsProgram Coordinator Kenneth Sousa,students researched the companies sothey could ask questions of the execu-tives. At Toys“R”Us, questions launcheddiscussions about plans to open tempo-rary stores during the holidays, as wellas strategies for managing a large volumeof suppliers at the world’s biggest toystore. At Nickelodeon, students learnedhow the organization mitigates the riskof negative backlash associated withadvertisements that air on the network.

“Anyone can memorize theoriesand vocabulary and recall them for aquiz or a test,” says Matt Galluzzo ’11(Londonderry, NH). “But being able totake that outside the classroom andsee it applied in real life is when youreally start to learn.”

Culturalactivities included a Broadway playand the King Tut exhibit at the DiscoveryTimes Square Exposition.

Day and night, students and profes-sors engaged in thought-provokingdiscussions ranging from tax cuts andunemployment benefits to offshore

drilling and a statewide ballot referen-dum that would have changed the officialname of the State of Rhode Island. Onthe bus ride home, catching some zzz’stook a back seat to helping a classmatewith a survey for a statistics project hewas working on.

A fter completing a paid summerinternship with Reebok Interna-tional in Canton, MA, Alexandra

Pearson ’11 segued into a second intern-ship with the company – this time foracademic credit.

The North Dighton, MA, senior is aConsumer Insights Intern in the BrandStrategy Department. On Tuesdays andThursdays, she arrives at Reebok head-quarters for a 7 a.m. spin class, thenworks from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. Throughonline communities and focus groups,she researches how the Reebok brandresonates with consumers, compiles com-petitive analyses on categories withinthe industry, and evaluates qualitativeresearch. She’s taken part in a project thatinvolved skateboarders on the Dew Tourin Boston and has also traveled to Dallas

and Phoenix to observe focus groups.“The team I work with is small, so

that allows me to spend a great deal oftime working with each person,” shesays. “Their wisdom and knowledge ofthe industry, as well as consumerresearch, is what I aspire to in my owncareer.”

Even though she’s a marketing major,Pearson never thought she wanted todo market research. “These internshipshave shown me that I not only enjoy itbut will also most likely start my careerin this type of position.”

She secured her initial interviewthrough a job search site but says shewould have been passed over had shenot worked with the Amica Center for

In addition to two internships withReebok, Pearson has also completedtwo internships with Biogen, Idec inCambridge, MA, the oldest independentbiotech firm in the world. She studiedin Scotland for a semester, and spenttwo weeks in Panama, Ecuador, and theGalapagos Islands through the Sopho-more International Experience. She’s alsofound time to volunteer for Relay forLife, and participated in two communityservice projects as part of her sociologyand service learning minor, tutoringinner-city high school students andassisting at the Rhode Island Free Clinic.

It seems like only yesterday thatPearson was beginning her college searchand visited Bryant – a decision she made

because her father and uncle are alumni.“It was a beautiful spring day, and thecampus was in full bloom,” she recalls.“I compared every college I visited afterthat to Bryant, and none were able tocompete with its beauty, sophistication,and professionalism.”

Now, in her senior year, she hopes toenter the field of consumer insights,which she feels is not only the perfect fitbut also a solid foundation for a market-ing career. She believes she’s ready –well rounded and fully prepared for acareer in business.

“Any student who is consideringBryant should realize that it is more thanjust an academic experience,” she says.“It is a community where you can ex-pand your intellectual knowledge, haveincomparable experiences, and formrelationships that will last a lifetime.”
