Mindrcading.

But beoause of its populadty and ease inworking it became greatly exposed tothe lay public by magicians hoping forattention by exposing their "brcthers' "methods, so efforts have always beenmade to try to improve and modernizethe Center Tear's ability to deceive allwatching the peformance.

Several very clever variations of the basicCenter-Tear belonged to Al Koran. Tothe best olmy knowledge he created theOne-Handed Center-Teitr after watchingwomen in a factory terr typewriter rib-bons with only one hand. But alas, thestolen center still had to be read on thesly. Or did it?

Koran also had the idea of handing thestolen center unopened to someone, besides the writer, to open and readas his own prediotion (S€e Al KoranLecturc Notes - Magic lnc.)

Clever ideas, but the One-Handed Tearneeds a special type of paper, and anunusual way of folding it , and if a wiseguy wrcte something weird on the paperyou could come off looking like a jerk, instead ol a genius.

On a different line of reasoning ( Theone leading to the nethod you've justpurchascd) Al Bsker had the "Stroke ofGenius" to develop a method of readingthe 'center" in the process of teadng upthe very slip itself. But again we run upagainst a few disadvantages.

First of all the "Umbrella Move"which isused to open th€ "Center" section comesafter most of the tearing which is a badtime as far as misdirection goes. Butmost of all the Umbrella Move rarelyworks for me, or in fact for almosteveryone that I\e ever talked to aboutit. (To thos€ not famiiiar with theUmbrella Move, it goes like this: Bysticking your thumb into a small foldedbillet and pushing, it should open upalmost like a little umbrella.)

But even if your misdiection is pedect, and the Umbrella Move works flawlessly, you still must dlift about quite a laryepiece of paper compared to all the otherones.

A b lliant concept, but rar€ is thepe$on who will overcome its hazards

and use it reliably-

Al Mann released a booklet entitled"The Apodosis" in which, besides a var-iation of the basic Baker technique byMr. Mann himself, there is a differentapproach to the Baker concept byRichard Osterlind.

Although much easier and more reliablethan the Baker Method it also has severaldmwbacks to my way of thinking.

The pause that you must make as youopen the center section, after the firsttear, is what botherc me most in hismethod. Add to that the unusual natureof the first tear, and the relatively smallcenter you get to view, you can see whatI mean.

After a great deal of expeimentationwith all the above methods, I still wasjust not satisfied so I set out to developmy own method.

Then after many torn up magazines andnewspapers, I came up with what Iconsider to be the method whichperhaps may well be the best possibletechnique available using the "Center-Tear" concept.

The momenl when you make your open-ing moves is perfectly covered bypsychologically perfect Msdirection. Two lears have just been made andthen you pause to look for sonlething toplace the potential mess you are in theProcess of making.

Ilt just what someone would normally

None of the lears or moves are unusualin nature, unlike th€ Osterlind method. You tear up the paper as someone wouldnormally do.

No Umbrella Moves are used. The prcc-ess of opening the folded center is easy, reliable, and it is usable on almost anyreasonably size or type of paper.

If wished a larger center than nomalmay also be obtained by just slightlyaltering the basic technique.

Now that I'm done praising my inven-tion let's get down to the importantstuff. How do we do it?

SUMMARY OF THE BERNSTEINCENTER TEAR TECHNIQUE

L Wirh ihe folded Center al your topright, you tear the slip down the middle.(Fie. C)

2. Your lelt hand stays stationary asyour right hand travels in a circular mo-tion. (Fis. B)

3. After the hands meet, both half slipsare tumed 90 degrees to your right. (Fig.D & r )4. Under cover of your right finge$your left thumb extends the half slipwith the folded Center about half itslength to your right. (Fig. E)

5. The right hand scems to tear botllslips agair, but only team off the foldcdCtnter.

6. As your right hand casually repeatsi ts circular motion, you pause to lookfor a recepticle to put the torn up slip in.(Fig. B)

7. During i ts circular path your r ightthumb pushes forward on the Centerwhile your first finger pulls back, caus-ing the ends of the Center to spread.(t: is. F)

8. You then cl ip the end of the Centerbetween your l irst and second f ingers, after which your thumb relecses the('enter. Ihis al lows the Center tosecrdly f l ip down behind your f ingcrs.

9. Your thumb pulls back as yourf ingers push on the now half opened(tntrr, causing it to opcn nore, justheforc your r ight hrnd cotnpletes i tseircle. (Fig. I)

10. Your lrf l thumb clps lhe edge olthe almost completely opened Centcr{f igs. I & K las the right hand then re.grasps the slip ready to tear while youglimpse the "secret information." (Fig.L)

11. You now resume tearing up thewhole slip, as the recepticle you askedfor should ju\t have been offered to you.

Don't worry aboul lhe opening movesbeing caught. They won't be visible ilyou have pracl icei l . and don t let yourhrnJs get loo fa-r apart or too far awa)from your body. Remember thal peoplewarching think you have two torn upquarters In each hand. so even if someshift ing i . somehow seen. i l won'rarouse suspicion.

Also r€member that as you "pause" tolook for a receplicle, your r ighl handtrarel\ calmly and slowly in i ts circula-path performing lhe opening moves as iLdoe\ \o. The pause is in your beharior

The use olthe paper and pencil makes sense here.A word or nunrbcr is easily just thoughtol, hut a pjcture must be drawn onsomething to be viewed and concentra-ted upon. Also what yolt are attelrptingseems quite diff icult to the lay mind.Your subject hrs been oflered an inf in-ite field to choose from, but rrost of allpeople get al l wrapped up in creatingthejr own l i t t le drnwing and it hitsthem personally when you then dupli-

The last technique this booklet wil lcover is original with ,ne to the best ofn1y knowledge, and is also made possibleby the "large Center" technique.

Since the "large Center" can cover sucha large area, it can for all intents and pur-poses serve as well as view an entireopened billet !

Here is a simple ve$ion of what I mean.Lay out numbers in collrmns as in Fis.P. You may now have any number o-nthe slips chcled even if its not one thatwill be in the section you will view. Why? Because at least part ofthe circlemade about the clrosen number will bein the "Center."

This is obviously adaptable to other bitsof information, other than numbers,Letter, Names, Cities. Astrolosical Siens.alrnost anything may be app[ad. tlfihisidea interests you, get some of mvPsuedo Astrology Slips where this idea isapplied. (Available from Magic, Inc.)

As long as ihe relative position of eachspecific bit of infomation that lays out-side of the Center section is memorized, you should have no p.oblem identifyingwhich item was circled.

Since it seems that all of us in the Magi-cal Arts have at least one overpoweringurge in common to try and fool ourbrother Magi, I leave you with this viJi-ation of the above technrque. It is notan effect for laymen, but for those "inthe know" who you hope to give a l-ewheadaches to.

Wrat you will need are three pencilsor pens which you can tell the dif-ference between by the way they write.(Dfferences in lead hardness will work.3 felt tips - one old - one new and onewith a thicker line, caused by youpreviously smashing the tip on hardsurface wotrld be fine also.) The idea isto remember which person you give eachone to. so that you may later know whocircled which particular selection.

Mren it 's t ime to perfotm, lay out what-ever information you deem best in col-unrns rs explained before. Only now inthe cente. there will be ttree circles, orparts ol circles, instead ofjust one. Be'cause of the differences in the circles, you also know which person picked eaohol the selections.

Just proceed casually with the B€rnsteinCenter-Tear technique after the lastselection is made and the folded slip isretumed to you. AIso, let it be seenyour hands are empty both before andafter the Tearing.

If those watching you aren't familar withthe technique, it will probably be th€irfhst headache, for lle fooled manyveteran Center-Tearels with it myself. The laying out of the choices over theentire slip should also lead away fromthe idea of a Center-Tear technique, andthe pencil subtly adds the final touch.

Well, that about wraps things up exceptI hope thes€ ideas have pleased you andthat you may use them often, and in thebest of Health.
