Volunteerism, Philanthropy, Community Spirit Among Indian-AmericansRam S. Ravindran

Recently I attended the Health Fair and the ICC Cleanup Day organized by the CSG (Community Service Group of IAI). My observations there got me thinking about writing this article.I was a bit disappointed to see most of those in attendance at those events were the officers of this organization (IAI) and their close friends. During the 37 years of my living in this city, I have observed a few people regularly put themselves out to help the Indian community and the larger Indianapolis community. Most of us look forward to the day when we get our citizenship papers. Do we want to be Americans only to get the passport and be able to sponsor some of our relatives? Alexis de Tocqueville observed more than 170 years ago, a defining characteristic of the American people is their commitment to service. Even today, that ethic remains strong, as across our nation Americans of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities are donating their time and talents to schools, churches (temples), hospitals, and local non-profits in an effort to improve their communities and serve a purpose greater than serving themselves. They are beautifying schools and neighborhoods, building homes, cleaning up after disasters, mentoring students, donating professional services, coaching youth sports teams, holding benefit fundraisers, and much, much more. You may have read stories of Americans going to Thailand (during the Tsunami), volunteers going out to put out fires in California or about all those people who went to help the Katrina victims. They all did it spending their own money and vacation time. As Americans of Indian origin, have we absorbed that spirit? As members of Indian American community do we do our part? Most of the people point out that the ethnic people only help their communities. We have to ask ourselves do we even help our own community let alone the larger American

community. As our children grow up in this country, we, as well as the schools they attend, encourage them to participate in various community service activities. It should not be just to pad up their resume when they apply for colleges. The spirit of volunteerism should get into their system. As adults we should teach them by our own examples. We should not do it because we want to help our organization that we work for, earn a good name.I understand that an average American family contributes annually about $1200 to various charitable organizations. They say that the average Indian-American community earns more than that average non-Indian American family. Do we all contribute nearly that much for charitable causes? We need to think about it.It is sad that most of the 2500 Indian-American families living in central Indiana are not family members of IAI. How can we have a viable community organization if we don’t become members, or volunteer our time and effort for the benefit of the community? Most of the religious books say that you serve God by serving fellow humans. We are supposed to be religious people. Let us resolve ourselves to give our time, effort and money (whatever we can) to the community that has sustained us. This can be the school, hospital, community organization, and the people around us. Let the spirit of volunteerism get into us.

Condolences...

- Deepest Sympathy to the family of Naveen (Babli) Mahajan, 52, wife of Subhash Mahajan passed away on Saturday, April 19, 2008 in the early morning at Methodist Hospital North. She made charitable contributions more than her share for the community at large.

- Former chief justice of India Justice Y.V. Chandrachud died in Mumbai Monday, July 14th, morning following a very brief illness. He was 88. Justice Chandrachud is survived by his wife Prabha, son Justice Dhananjay Chandrachud, who is a judge of Bombay High Court, and daughter Neema Kulkarni, who lives in Indianapolis area with her husband, Dilip Kulkarni.

Discover Chiropractic MedicineShalini S. Barkat, D.C.

It’s moving medicine! Chiropractic medicine specializes in the structure and function of moving structures of human anatomy. Thomas A. Edison said, “The doctor of the future… will interest his patients in the care of the human frame, in diet, and in the cause and prevention of disease.”The human frame is basically made up of the skeletal system (206 bones) and the muscular system (656 to 850 muscles), and functions by means of the nervous and circulatory systems. It’s important to care for these systems as you care for your teeth, skin, eyes, etc. These systems keep you going and enjoying a high quality of life. Chiropractors see a multitude of conditions, such as headaches, numbness and tingling, shoulder pain, knee pain and treat a variety of patients including young children, senior citizens, and expecting mothers. Chiropractic care addresses your presenting symptoms, if any, as well as assesses potential conditions you may incur based on your

activities of daily living and structural health. It has been said that chiropractic care parallels dentistry. You should see your chiropractor if a sudden onset of shoulder, back, or knee, etc. pain occurs, and see your chiropractor to prevent future complications and manage the health of your neuromusculoskeletal system (nerve-muscle-skeletal systems). Family doctors, dentists, neurologists, orthopaedist, etc. refer to chiropractors, and vice versa. This synergistic effort provides you with the best opportunity for keeping well. We love thinking about the future. For some it’s gadgets and for others it’s financial planning. Consider present as well as preventive healthcare. A definition of medicine is “the art and science of healing. It encompasses a range of practices evolved to maintain and restore human health by the prevention and treatment of illness”. It’s important that you know how your body works. Just as we are all different on the outside, we are all also different on the inside. Take advantage of chiropractic care, and learn what you are made of.
