GORP Good Old Raisins and Peanuts

GORP is a great snack to take on Girl Scout outings. It can be made a week or two ahead of time, and sealed in individual zip-lock bags for the girls. Although GORP stands for Good Old Raisins and Peanuts, it can be made with any combination of driedfruit, cereal, nuts, salty items, such as pretzels, and sweet stuff, like M&Ms. A simple recipe for GORP follows, but feel free tocreate your troops own secret recipe based on their tastes.

    Yields: 10 cups of GORP

Ingredients:2 cups of raisins2 cups of peanuts2 cups of M&Ms2 cups of dried cranberries2 cups of cashews

Mix all ingredients in a large bowl and divide into one-cup servings for the girls. (Zippered sandwich bags work well for thispurpose.) Eat and enjoy!

SWAPS Special Whatchamacallits Affectionately Pinned Somewhere or Share With a Pal

There will be swapping at this event. Your girls should plan to make and bring about ten or fifteen inexpensive crafts per girl,to swap with girls from other troops. Have each girl put her SWAPS in a bag with her name on it, to prevent lost SWAPS.Swapping time is scheduled during check in, but SWAPS may also be traded at any other down time.

Traditionally, SWAPS have a safety pin glued to the back, so they can be pinned to clothing or a hat. (Some troops choose tohave SWAP hatsinexpensive hats can be purchased at most craft stores. For a troop ID, the girls can decorate them withtheir name and troop number.)

A few ideas for SWAPS are listed below. You can come up with more, or just give your girls an assortment of pipe cleaners, feltpom-poms and wiggly eyes, and let their imaginations run wild! (Remember to glue safety pins to the back.)

Wooden clothespins, large and small, painted to look like different people or animals. Smores from cut up sections of a box, a square of brown felt and a cotton ball. Pizza made of tan felt with red, yellow and green felt scraps glued on as toppings. Small scraps of leather can be made into a tiny saddle, with yarn and pipe cleaners for the stirrups. Eyelet trim (1 inches wide) cut into sections and glued to white ribbon to make an apron. Make friendship pins with bears on a safety pin. Mini sit-upons with wallpaper scraps. Felt pennants with the event name and date on them. Puzzle pieces painted in bright colors, then sealed, with iridescent colors sprinkled on them. Fuzzy dice made from soft foam cubes with marker dots, hung from a pin. Fans folded from wallpaper border remnants, with lace glued on the edge and a ribbon rosette at the base. Felt kite, with yarn for a tail.
