began teaching in the Williamsport Area School Dis-trict in 1976. During her years as a teach-er, she received the WAHS Teacher of the Year Award and Lycoming College Alum-nus of the Year Award. Cur-rently she is a field super-visor for pre-student teachers at Lycoming College. In the field of athletics, she coached women’s track and field for WAHS for 20 years; she was in-ducted into the West Branch Valley Sports Hall of Fame, and she was the first, and currently only, fe-male coach to be inducted into the Pennsylvania Track and Field Hall of Fame. The next Book Review Luncheon will be Friday, October 4, 2019.

Friends Book Review Luncheon to feature Story of the Romanovs The luncheon will start at 12 noon in the Lowry Room of the Welch Fami-ly Wing of the James V. Brown Library. Those who wish may purchase lunch at noon for $6. To reserve lunch, use the online reservation calendar on the library website calen-dar.jvbrown.edu where you will find a prompt for reservations, or

call Leslie at the Library at 570-326-0536, ext. 134. Reservations should be made by Wednesday, May 1. (Please note that you should regis-ter only if you wish to reserve lunch.) You may bring your own lunch or simply attend the book review, which will start at 12:30 p.m. Parking is avail-able in the public lot off Market Street, adjacent to the Welch Wing.

Marilouise Mazzante, retired Williamsport Area High School social studies teacher, department leader, and athletic coach, will present a review of Nicholas and Alexandra: The Classic Account of the Fall of the Romanov Dynasty by Robert K. Massie at the Book Review Luncheon on May 3. This masterpiece of the tragic end of the House of Romanov, the last Russian imperial dynasty, de-tails the love affair of Tsar Nicho-las II and his wife, Alexandra, their family, their involvement with Rasputin, and the revolution that transformed imperial Russia. Although this book is a tradi-tional, historically accurate biog-raphy, narrating its subjects’ lives from their births to their deaths, the main focus of the story is the love between Tsar Nicholas and Alexandra, the tragedy of their son Alexei’s hemophilia, and the toll that the disease took on both the family and the entire country. Mazzante earned her Bachelor of Arts at Lycoming College and

Hemingway Night at Herdic House Join us for a fun, literary and tasty evening at the Herdic House on July 21 to celebrate the Friends of the Library’s second annual Hemingway Night. The evening pays tribute to Papa’s birthday, adventurous life, and, most importantly, his literary influence on 20th century fiction. The event, a fundraiser for the Friends of the Library, will be held at the Herdic House, 407 W. 4th Street, William-sport, and will include Cuban cuisine; readings from Hem-ingway’s works; and an auction featuring artworks from local artists. The cost is $55 per person and includes appetizers, entrée, dessert and coffee. 5:30pm Cocktails and 6pm Dinner. Please email [email protected] to make a reservation for this event.
