The Food Bank for New York City recently honored organizations that donate food for its citywide network of pantries.

Held on June 6 at its 90,000-square-foot distribution warehouse in Hunts Point, Food Bank’s second annual luncheon served to recognize the efforts of community partners that provide sustenance for New Yorkers in need.

“When you gather good people, you do great things,” said Rafael Toro, Director of Public Relations for Goya Foods, one of the partners honored at the event. “We believe in helping those who need help. We believe in bringing people together.”

A banner was unfurled to reveal Stop & Shop as the inductee for Food Bank’s “Million Meals Club,” which recognizes food donors who have donated enough pounds of food to what is tantamount to a million or more meals for New Yorkers.

“Part of Stop & Shop's mission is to give

back to the community and supporting the Food Bank for NYC is just one way we can help build sustainable communities in the areas where our employees work and live,” said Stop & Shop’s Cindy Carrasquilla in a statement. “The need for hunger assistance among the communities we serve continues to grow, so we're appreciative of the work that everyone here at the Food Bank does day in and day out to help our neighbors.”

Food Bank works with community partners to provide food for over 1,000 pantries throughout the city, serving more than 62.5 million free meals each year.

“I feel fantastic. This is my favorite day,” said Margarette Purvis, Chief Executive Officer and President of Food Bank. “The fact that we have awards to give shows how successful this has been. The poorest have not been forgotten.”

Currently, one in five New Yorkers relies on soup kitchens or food pantries, according to Food Bank.

Purvis stated that about 400,000 children suffer food insecurity in New York City, the highest among all age groups, with senior citizens coming in second.

Como todos los padres que conozco, mis hijos y mi nieto son mi mayor

alegría.

Este pasado Día del Padre fue un día de acción, durante el cual, junto con seis de mis

colegas demócratas en el Congreso, visité a padres inmigrantes que fueron

separados por la fuerza de sus hijos en la frontera sur y que actualmente están retenidos en un centro de detención

en Elizabeth, Nueva Jersey.Lo que presencié durante

mi visita fue verdaderamente antiestadounidense e increíble.

Los padres que visitamos estaban traumatizados porque habían sido separados de sus hijos y aún no sabían si sus hijos estaban a salvo.

Muchos de ellos lucharon por hablarnos durante su desesperación.

Like every father I know, my children and my grandson are

my greatest joy.

This past Father’s Day was a day of action, during which I, together with six of my Democratic colleagues in Congress, visited immigrant fathers who have been forcibly separated from their children at the southern border and who were currently being held at a detention center in Elizabeth, New Jersey.

What I witnessed during my visit was truly un-American and unbelievable.

The fathers we visited were traumatized as they had been separated from their children and still did not know if their kids were safe.

Many of them struggled to talk to us through their despair.

Each of the men we visited were seeking asylum here in the United States and had crossed the border lawfully at the port of entry. Since their detainment, they have not been notified of the whereabouts of their loved ones, as the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) currently has no official

method of tracking the individuals they detain or the children that they separate.

One young man with whom I visited had fled from Honduras with his family including his young daughter, a young girl of about 4 or 5 years old. He was traveling with her birth certificate just in case they were questioned along the journey. Once they reached the U.S. border, Border Patrol agents were verbally abusive to him both before and after they took his child away. They repeatedly claimed his daughter was not his child. They forcibly dragged her from his arms. As she struggled to maintain her grip to his arms, both she and her father cried. After some time detained in Texas, he was sent to the Elizabeth Contract Detention Facility. DHS has yet to provide him with any updates regarding his daughter or her well-being. Based on information he has received from another relative, he believes his daughter is now in Michigan.

But he is not sure.And he still has not spoken to her.Shame on President Trump and his

administration. Such heartbreak and despair would be

Councilmember Diana Ayala was having a full circle moment this

past Tues., Jun. 19th.

As she sat beside Mayor Bill de Blasio and New York Police Department (NYPD) Commissioner James O’Neill as they announced a shift in enforcement regarding marijuana, Ayala recalled that she was no stranger in her youth to smoking pot in the park.

“Look at me now,” she exclaimed.Starting September 1, 2018, most New

Yorkers found smoking marijuana in public will

receive a criminal summons instead of facing arrest.

The announcement was made at the Thomas Jefferson Recreation Center in East Harlem.

“Individuals, with exception of those on probation or with warrants, will no longer be arrested for smoking marijuana in public,” noted Ayala.

De Blasio said the shift in enforcement will increase fairness and is expected to reduce overall marijuana arrests by about 10,000 per year.

“Nobody’s destiny should hinge on a minor non-violent offense,” said de Blasio. “Neighborhood policing has helped to bring officers and community together, but we still have more work to do to right the wrongs in the criminal justice system. This new policy will help reduce unnecessary arrests, while making our city fairer and safer.”

Those smoking marijuana in pubic are still subject to arrest if they are on probation or parole, have existing criminal warrants, don’t have identification, have a recent documented history of violence, or their smoking poses an immediate public safety risk, such as while driving a car.

Currently, about 40 percent of people arrested for smoking marijuana had no prior arrest history.

“We know that it is not productive to arrest

people who have no prior criminal history,” said O’Neill. “In fact, it hampers our efforts to build trust and strengthen relationships with the people we serve, and it does nothing to further the NYPD’s mission of ridding our streets of those responsible for violence and disorder. Issuing summonses for marijuana offenses that do not directly affect public safety will allow our officers to do their jobs effectively and safely, and in a way that always promotes public safety and quality of life for all New Yorkers.”

Prior to the policy change, NYPD officers can arrest New Yorkers for smoking pot in public, while possession of small amounts of marijuana can lead to a summons.

The policy change derived from a 30-day working group conducted by the NYPD, designed to examine reasons for racial

disparity in marijuana arrests. Patrol Officers will receive guidance on

how to implement this new policy throughout the summer. The city will also issue quarterly reports on arrests and criminal summonses for marijuana possession by race and borough.

De Blasio suggested that the change in enforcement was partly in anticipation of the potential legalization of marijuana in the state.

He said he was also convening a separate Mayoral Task Force to determine the appropriate regulatory framework and identify the public safety, health and financial consequences should the state move forward with legalization.

“We know that a bigger discussion happening in this state and this nation on marijuana policy, and we have to be prepared for that, but we’re

Every day, they pose the same question.

Her daughters keep asking Sandra Chica, “Why is Daddy not with us?”

“Every day I have to answer them why he’s not at home,” said Chica. “And now, I don’t even know what to tell them.”

On Mon., June 18th, Chica stood with her daughters Luciana and Antonia outside the New York headquarters of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) at 26 Federal Plaza to call for her husband Pablo Villavicencio’s immediate release. She said his detainment was taking a toll on their children.

Elder daughter Luciana, whose fourth birthday is just days after Father’s Day – on Wednesday, June 20th – addressed her father directly: “I miss you, Daddy. We are waiting for you at home.”

Lawyers have submitted a release

request to ICE to demand the agency free Villavicencio, who was detained when he attempted to deliver a pizza to the Fort Hamilton army base in Brooklyn.

An undocumented immigrant from Ecuador, the 35-year-old Villavicencio was arrested on June 1 as he attempted to deliver pizza to the base. He submitted to a routine background check there, revealing an active ICE warrant for him.

Chica has enlisted help from Legal Aid Society attorneys to stop his deportation.

In a June 9 ruling, a federal court judge issued a temporary stay on Villavicencio’s deportation. He is currently being held at a detention facility in New Jersey.

On Monday, Legal Aid attorneys filed a release request on Chica’s behalf.

“Yesterday was Father’s Day, and these children were robbed of this holiday because of ICE’s cruel, inhumane, unjust decision to detain him,” said Jennifer Williams, Deputy Attorney-In-Charge of the Immigration Law Unit at The Legal Aid Society. “This detention is causing immense pain, heartache, punishment for this family. His prolonged detention is unwarranted under these circumstances.”

The release request outlines that Villavicencio is not a flight risk, has no criminal record, and is not a danger to the community or national security, Williams

said. It argues that his continued detention “is not in the public interest,” she added.

“Furthermore, his removal from the United States is not proper until there’s resolution of the legal challenges and investigation into the circumstances that led to his arrest and detention by ICE at the Fort Hamilton army installation.”

City Council Speaker Corey Johnson said he was “outraged” that Villavicencio’s children were suffering due to the federal government’s policies.

“He poses no threat. He was delivering pizza, for god’s sake,” Johnson stated.

Lucy López has had visions.

López, who serves as Deputy General Counsel at the management consulting firm McKinsey and Company, recently detailed one particularly indelible image.

“[I see] my parents leaning heavily, their whole bodies pressed against a door,” she said. “They were pushing open for me a massive door – the door of opportunity.”

López, who advises senior leadership on corporate governance and risk management issues at McKinsey and Company, was one of four women honored as “trailblazers” by the LatinoJustice Puerto Rican Legal Defense and Education Fund (LatinoJustice), the non-profit legal and civil rights organization committed to changing discriminatory practices throughout the United States.

Among its longtime board members are the Honorable Sonia Sotomayor, whose appointment to the Supreme Court made her the first Latina and first Puerto Rican to join the highest court.

López shared thoughts on her parents’ sacrifices for her and her siblings during her remarks at a breakfast reception held at the Yale Club. López, whose family immigrated from the Dominican Republic when she was a young girl, singled out one primary source of inspiration and role model.

Diaper duty can certainly be stressful for parents of

young children.

But for some parents, it’s a stress not just on their patience, but also on their wallets.

Nearly 1 in 3 families in the U.S. is affected by diaper need: the inability to adequately access clean diapers during the newborn, infant and toddler years of a child’s life.

Elizabeth Rochin, Vice President of Nursing with the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetric and Neonatal Nurses, said an ample supply of diapers for just one child can cost families anywhere from $70-$120 a month.

“For some families, they’re probably thinking, ‘That’s nothing,’” she said. “But for other families, that amount of money is a considerable burden that really creates an economic hardship for those families to be able to afford clean diapers on a regular basis.”

A new initiative will commission public monuments and other artwork on city property to honor women who have impacted New York City history.

Known as “She Built NYC,” the program will launch with an open call for nominations until August 1, 2018.

“This is the day we finally start putting women where they belong — on pedestals,” said Deputy Mayor Alicia Glen at a press conference in Bryant Park. She noted that 90 percent of the city’s monuments are of men.

The public can visit women.nyc to submit nominations of women, groups of women, and women-led events that significantly impacted the history of New York City.

First Lady Chirlane McCray said there are few public art installations commemorating females.

“Any walking tour of the five boroughs raises the question, where are all the women? When there are no representations of the women who built this city, women of all ethnicities, the message is that women’s contributions are less than men’s,” stated McCray.

She said one of the first things she noticed after moving into Gracie Mansion was the artwork.

“Gracie’s walls were adorned with

images of men… mostly white male figures of wealth, power and privilege,” she remarked, noting that she sought to diversify the art in the home.

The Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA) has committed up to $10 million

over the next four years to commissioning new permanent public monuments and commemorations.

“It’s real, and it’s simple generosity,” she said. “Shop & Stop were guests last year, and now look. They showed us that donating a million meals within a year is possible. It’s not a difficult thing. Give as much as you can along the way.”

City Councilmember Carlos Menchaca, Chair of the Council’s Immigration Committee, criticized the Trump administration’s actions “to remove children from their families.”

“It’s not just happening at the border, it’s happening in our own neighborhood,” Menchaca said.

Williams said that Villavicencio was in the

process of applying for a green card at the time of his arrest. She said he is scheduled for another hearing in his deportation case on July 24.

“We won’t give up until Pablo is again with us, at home,” said Chica. “I demand ICE do the right thing and let Pablo free. We are only one of thousands of families in the same situation.”

Having come to this country with my own family at the age of 9, as an immigrant and as a father, I am deeply concerned by President Trump’s barbaric and hateful ‘zero tolerance’ policy that separates immigrant families when they cross the U.S. – Mexico border, including more than 2,700 children who have been split from their parents since October 1, 2017 through May 31, 2018.

Etched into the Statue of Liberty, a symbol of our nation is the statement, “Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.”

It is a testament to an American ideal that has ensured our country’s standing as a beacon of hope, liberty and freedom.

I cannot truly put into words how deeply troubled I have felt since my visit this weekend.

The Trump Administration and Republicans have continued to perpetrate their evil act

against immigrants in America, attacking our families, separating our children, and detaining our mothers and fathers.

We must be strong and continue to stand united as an affront to such injustice and inhumanity. Family separation is not the law, and the Trump administration could easily reverse this policy today.

I co-sponsored the Keep Families Together Act, which promotes family unity and prohibits DHS from separating children from their parents, except in extraordinary circumstances.

No matter your political affiliation or opinion about immigration policy, we can all agree that families must remain intact and our efforts should protect children, and not purposely harm them.

group found that most New Yorkers believe public smoking of marijuana was a public nuisance that should be curtailed; however, the consensus favored summonses in lieu of arrest if public safety and quality of life were unaffected.

The working group included input from the city’s five district attorneys, public defenders, the Speaker of the City Council, community groups, scholars, drug policy advocates, faith leaders and and young adults impacted by these policies, O’Neill said.

Brooklyn District Attorney Eric González said he would vacate and seal past marijuana convictions for thousands of people in Brooklyn, with an announcement expected in the coming weeks.

“I applaud the Mayor and the Police Commissioner for adopting a policy to stop making arrests in the vast majority of marijuana cases, which is the approach I have been calling for and a step in the right direction,” said González. “We must bring a sense of fairness to the past at the same time that we implement these new enforcement policies in the present.”

“Studies have shown, time and time again, that black and brown men are disproportionally targeted for marijuana arrests, which burdens them with records that follow them for the rest of their lives. As a result of low level marijuana possession, they are deprived of education, housing, and employment opportunities, which affect not only their wellbeing and livelihood, but their families and communities, too,” said

Ayala. “Decriminalizing marijuana will not only lead to less arrests citywide, but it will also lead to more access for residents that live in the communities my colleagues and I represent.”

However, not everyone was on board with the new policy.

“If the mayor wanted to create a plan to make racial disparities in marijuana enforcement worse, he’s accomplished it with this. By allowing the NYPD to create a plan that feeds off and widens disparities in the criminal justice system, Mayor de Blasio has failed to show leadership,” said Communities United for Police Reform spokesperson Monifa Bandele. “The attempt to move some arrests to summons also does nothing to address disparities. The de Blasio administration refuses to fulfill its commitment to publicly report the demographic data on each particular type of summons, hiding the racial disparities in the summons system. Therefore, all this plan will do is push the racial disparities to the summons system and then hide them from the public. The NYPD must stop its discriminatory targeting of certain New Yorkers for marijuana enforcement – that’s the way to end the racial disparities.”

After each was presented with a commemorative plaque, the women convened a panel moderated by Master of Ceremonies Shirley Rumirek to discuss experiences that had challenged and motivated them, and how they each chose to help pave the way for more women to excel in their chosen professions.

“What I encourage everybody to do is to focus more on giving back. That is everybody’s responsibility,” said Lozano, Co-Chair of Skadden’s Latin America Group and head of the firm’s Spanish language corporate practice. After leaving her legal practice in Colombia, she became the first Latin American born and licensed female lawyer to become partner at Skadden.

Lozano also advised attendees to educate and engage allies and non-Latinos in social justice causes.

“You can’t just sit there,” she said. “I believe we all have to be part of the change to become a part of the solution.”

Topics ranged from excavating secret superpowers; juggling family and work needs; and growing up bilingual.

“The fact that I grew up code switching is a skill,” said Fernández, referring to the ability to alternate between languages and cultures. “It’s a leadership skill that is at a very, very high emotional level.”

Fernández, an immigrant from the Dominican Republic, has spent over two decades advocating for human and civil rights.

and work as one because the Latino community collectively has enormous power,” advised

Castillo. “We have economic power, we have civic power. We have power that we really haven’t understood. But it’s time for us to wake up and really flex that muscle.”

“We are more united as a community,” added Fernández. “So long as we continue on that path, we will be able to usher in policies that are fair and just.”

Brittnee Rock said the event had offered meaningful propositions.

“The panel resonated with me so much specifically as a woman of color,” said Rock. “When you have a seat at the table, you need to elevate your voice. Especially in those spaces when you are the only one, your voice matters more than ever.”

niños pequeños.

Pero para algunos padres, es un estrés no solo por su paciencia, sino también por sus billeteras.

Casi 1 de cada 3 familias en los Estados Unidos se ve afectada por la necesidad de pañales: la incapacidad de un acceso adecuado a pañales limpios durante los años de vida de un niño recién nacido, infante y niño pequeño.

Elizabeth Rochin, vicepresidenta de Enfermería de la Asociación de Enfermeras de Salud, Obstétricas y Neonatales, dijo que un amplio suministro de pañales para un solo niño puede costarles a las familias entre $70 y $120 dólares mensuales.

“Algunas familias probablemente piensen que no es nada”, dijo. “Pero para otras familias, esa cantidad de dinero es una carga considerable que realmente crea una dificultad económica para pagar los pañales limpios de manera regular”.

Rochin agregó que 3 de cada 5 padres informan que faltan al trabajo o a la escuela porque no tenían suficientes pañales para enviar a su pequeño a la guardería o a programas de educación temprana.

El Programa de Asistencia Nutricional Suplementaria (SNAP, por sus siglas en inglés) y otros programas de asistencia pública no cubren el costo de los pañales. Pero hay una Red Nacional del Banco de Pañales, con agencias locales que brindan apoyo en 46 estados.

Rochin added that 3 in 5 parents report missing work or school because they didn’t have enough diapers to send their little one to child care or early education programs.

The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and other public assistance programs do not cover the cost of diapers. But there is a National Diaper Bank Network, with local agencies providing assistance in 46 states.

When a baby’s skin is not consistently kept clean and dry, skin problems such as yeast infections can occur. But, Rochin explained, some parents have no option but to stretch their diaper supply.

“Families who struggle with clean diapers or who struggle with a lack of clean diapers re-use diapers, or will use diapers to a point where they are no longer safe to use against a baby’s skin,” she said.

Rochin encourages families in need to reach out to their nearest diaper bank, and asked that others help out by donating a day’s supply of diapers.

It is estimated that 2 million children age 5 and under don’t have all the diapers they need to stay clean and dry.

This fall, an advisory panel will create a list of nominees for commemoration. The woman, group or event that is honored, and which artist will create the monument, will be determined by DCLA and the city’s Percent for Art program.

Details on the first monument commissioned through She Built NYC will be revealed in January 2019, city officials said.

In November 2017, the Parks Department and Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer announced that a bronze statue known as the Elizabeth Cady Stanton

and Susan B. Anthony Woman Suffrage Movement Monument would be constructed in Central Park in 2020.

“As we campaigned for the Women’s Suffrage Movement Monument now planned in Central Park, the fact that shocked people again and again as we repeated it was that no real woman, present or past, had a statue or monument anywhere in the park’s 843 acres,” said Brewer.

“The growing movement for representation has led to exciting new projects like this one that acknowledge the gap and will further contribute to closing it,” she said of She Built NYC.

El Departamento de Asuntos Culturales (DCLA, por sus siglas en inglés) ha comprometido hasta $10 millones de dólares durante los próximos cuatro años para encargar nuevos monumentos públicos permanentes y conmemoraciones.

Para ser considerada para la nominación a través de She Built NYC, las personas deben haber fallecido al menos hace 20 años, y los eventos deben haber tenido lugar hace al menos 20 años.

“Las personas a las que celebramos en nuestro ámbito público pueden inspirar a las niñas a soñar en grande, o pueden perpetuar el mensaje de que las mujeres no han contribuido a la sociedad, algo que sabemos que no es cierto”, dijo Glen.

Este otoño, un panel asesor creará una lista de nominados para la conmemoración. La mujer, el grupo o evento homenajeado y la artista que creará el monumento serán determinados por DCLA y el programa Percent for Art de la ciudad.
