By the summer of 1963 Ennis del Mar and Jack Twist met each other atAguirre’s trailer office.
Joe Aguirre hired them to take care of his sheeps. By that time of hard work Ennis and Jack starts their relationship, but a
complex one. First time they have sex: No one recognizes what happens. Aguirre will discover them having relationships. He doesn’t like the situation
and invents an excuse to fire them. Ennis and Jack will recover their lives:
◦ Ennis gets married with Alma and they will have 2 children◦ Jack will do rodeos and meets Lureen in Texas.
4 years later Ennis and Jack recover their relationship. For 20 years they spent sporadic time together because they have other
obligations. Ennis will know Jack’s Death by a postcard. But we don’t know in what
circumstances because there are two possibilities: an accident or a murderbecause of his sexual condition.
At the end Ennis will realice that Jack was the most important person in hislife.
HOMOSEXUALITY: Not recognition of sexual condition:
◦ ―They never talked about the sex, let it happen, at first only inthe tent at night, then in the fukll daylight with the hot sunstriking down, and at evening in the fireglow, quick, rough, laughing and snorting, no lack of noises butsaing not a goddam word except once Ennis said: ― I’m not noqueer‖, and Jack jumped in with ― Me neither. A one-shot thing.Nobody’s business but ours‖.‖ How The outsiders see homosexuality:
◦ ―They believed themselves invisible, not knowing Joe Aguirre hadwatched them through his binoculars for ten minutes oneday, waiting until they’d buttoned up their jeans, waiting untilEnnis rode back to the sheep […] The next week Joe Aguirre sentword to bring them down […]and they packed in the game andmoved off the mountain with the sheep, stones rolling at theirheels, purple cloud crowding in front the west and the metal smellof coming snow pressing them on.‖
◦ ― There was this two old guys ranched together downhom, Earl and Rich – Dad woukld pass a remark when heseen them. They was a joke even tough they was prettytough old birds. I was what, nine years old and theyfound Earl dead in a irrigation ditch. They’d took a tireiron to him, spurred him up, drug him arround by his dickuntill it pulled off, just bloody pulp. What the tire irondone looked like pieces a burned tomatoes all overhim, nose tore down from skiddin on gravel.‖
Homosexuality as perverssion
◦ ― Don’t lie, don’t try to fool me, Ennis. I know what itmeans: Jack Twist? Jack Nasty. You and him—‖[…]‖―Shut up‖, he said. ―Mind your own business. You don’tknown nothin about it‖‖.
