SOFTWARE ENGINEERING

Polaris Software Engineering offer is shaped in three main competence domains:

ENTERPRISE ARCHITECTURE DESIGN

Design and Evolution support for enterprise software architecture according to the main standard

design patterns as: client/server, layered architecture, component-based architecture, domain/

model driven architecture, message driven architecture, and service-oriented architecture. Design

is driven by customer requirements related to architecture attributes as: Availability, Performance,

Reliability, Scalability, Security.

SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT, VERIFICATION & VALIDATION

Software development, verification & validation support is provided following the best technologies,

quality practices, methodologies and tools. Development process may be implemented to be

compliant to classic waterfall project management along with AGILE approach and continuous

integration (incremental development) methodology. Polaris’ offer is structured to be compliant

to customer environment eco-system applying all software quality control strategies and tools:

version control and bug tracking management, code coverage analysis, static code analysis, code

review, code profiling. Software development process may include “third party” code inspection

sessions to provide to the customer “direct quality” key performance indicator.

SOFTWARE QUALITY ASSURANCE

Polaris’s offer include quality assessment on customer software development processes in order

to identify opportunities for improvements and reduce: poor quality cost, maintenance and

software platform evolution cost. Customer is supported in selecting and implementing process

improvements.

OFFSHORE FRAMEWORK

Worldwide capability of RINA Group allows Polaris to include in software engineering offer the

capability to setup offshore service delivery for customers that have to implement an outsourcing

strategy. Cost saving effect for the customer is powered by the availability of Polaris’ local single

point of contact that cuts out the customer offshore management overhead.

ENERGY & AUTOMATION

LOCATION: Italy

SCOPE OF WORK: Analysis of the current development, software verification and

validation process and identification of improvement measures.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project was carried out in two stages: analysis of

the current software development process and its validation, and identification

of improvements to be made and new KPI to be adopted. The project also

focused on the analysis of the return on investment, to implement what was

suggested.

MAIN SKILLS DEPLOYED: Life cycle analysis of a software product according to

the Agile methodology. Consolidated experience in managing teams assigned to

the verification and validation phases.

DEFENCE & AEROSPACE

LOCATION: Italy

SCOPE OF WORK: Analysis and development of CSCI related to Map and

terrestrial Data manipulation through latest Java frameworks. Coordination of

foreign development team involved into other related CSCIs developments.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project enables the Alliance to perform persistent

surveillance over wide areas from high-altitude, long-endurance, unmanned air

platforms operating at considerable stand-off distances and in any weather

or light condition. Using advanced radar sensors, the AGS Core continuously

detects and tracks moving objects throughout the observed areas, as well as

providing radar imagery of areas and stationary objects.

MAIN SKILLS DEPLOYED: Military standards, Java, Spring Framework, Apache

CXF, Apache Camel, REST, Luciad, SVN, Doors, Teams Management skill,

expecially foreign ones.

DEFENSE & AVIONIC

LOCATION: Italy

SCOPE OF WORK:

� Software analysis and development

� Software verification and validation

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: As software engineer in charge of the design and

implementation of new graphics effects and new engine features of the

Customer Image Generator in order to improve the pilot flight experience during

an operative mission. Development of tool simulators for training station.

MAIN SKILLS DEPLOYED: Working in agile methodology, using C++, Python,

OpenGL, GLSL, Object Oriented paradigm.

EMBEDDED AND CRITICAL SYSTEMS

Polaris’s know-how of embedded systems covers all aspects, from design to final testing.

FIRMWARE & SOFTWARE DESIGN

Design, development and validation of firmware for the most widely used microcontrollers and

low level software for real time operating systems. Starting from schematics and requirements,

we develop:

� BSP (Board Support Package)

� Bootloaders and Drivers for OS (e.g. Linux, Microsoft Windows, VxWorks, pSOS, QNX)

FPGA DESIGN

Design and preparation of FPGA code, followed by integration (VHDL and Verilog).

problems and their solution.

MILITARY COMMUNICATION SWITCHING UNIT

SCOPE OF WORK: Prototyping of a communication equipment designed to allow

secure interconnection of different communication equipment composed by

two multi-processor control boards, two DSP switching boards, 24 data bus

interface boards, 24 media-link interface boards (12 types of communication

media), 2 back-panels (pin staggering), specific AC/DC & DC/DC boards and 3

LCD Control Panels for equipment control:

� Design integration & testing of the whole system HW & mechanical

components

� Software development according to MIL-STD-498 lifecycle for the real time

control of the whole equipment including the DSP switching unit, the multiple

media-link boards and the operator control panels

� Design, development testing and qualification of the equipment according

to military standards GAM-EG-13, MIL-STD-810, MIL-STD-461 (noise, shock

and vibration, EMC & ESD, salt fog)

EXOMARS

SCOPE OF WORK: In the framework of the ExoMars Programme, the Radar

Doppler Altimeter (RDA), is the equipment dedicated to aid the controlled

landing of the Entry Descent Module (EDM) on the Martian soil. The project

included the following developments:

� Design, development and test of real-time software application for ECU

subsystem

� Support for HW/SW interfaces’ design with NI cRIO-9113 FPGA

� ECU subsystem / FT-EGSE integration activities’ support

� Support during the commissioning of ExoMars RDA FT-EGSE

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Crex-B is an advanced micro electric fixed-wing

Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) providing real-time intelligence capable of

autonomous flight, navigation, vertical landing or short track landing. The micro

UAV system is specifically designed for Special Operational and Tactical Forces

for “over the hill” and “around the corner” intelligence missions.

MAIN SKILLS DEPLOYED: Analysis of manufacturability and testability of

product, cost and non-recurring, activities and participation in construction

documentation phases of Review, technical troubleshooting.

DEFENSE

LOCATION: Italy

SCOPE OF WORK: Analysis, requirements and software development of electro-

optics hyperspectral system.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The project was carried out in these stages:

� System analysis and requirements

� Software and HMI (Human Machine Interface) development for hyperspectral

system

� Test of hyperspectral system in order to verify operating performances of

HMI in real acquisition campaign with ULM platform (Ultra-Léger Motorisé)

MAIN SKILLS DEPLOYED: Experience in C/C++ software development on

Linux and Windows, GUI/HMI development using Qt cross-platform application

framework.

SIMULATION & MODELING

Polaris offers consultancy for the design and development of simulators for training purposes

and support for the design of systems and sub-systems. The main applications relate to the

aerospace and defence sectors but the know-how developed can be adapted to many other

contexts.

Polaris has proven experience of simulation management software and simulators and is able to

intervene also as regards complex 3D graphic engines. With reference to modelling, the Polaris

teams are able to model both physical phenomena (i.e. meteorological) and complex electronic

war systems, radar, IR sensors or weapons systems. Our research and development teams study

innovative solutions for HMI (Human Machine Interface) and for control of systems with gesture

recognition devices.

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Development of multiplatform Graphic User Interface

and middle-ware for MARS (Multimode Airborne Radar Simulator), a software

tool which provides a real-time computer simulation of the principal A/G and A/A

radar modes of modern airborne pulse-doppler radars. Visual Studio and QT

framework are used for development.

populated by autonomous entities ( Air/Ground/See entities).

DRONES & AVIATION TRAINING

SCOPE OF WORK:

� Generic UAV, Falco, Raven, Soldato Futuro and UGV training simulator

development

� Forza NEC ITB polo AMI project

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Based on AMI specifications a generic UAV, Falco, Raven,

Soldato Futuro and UGV simulators were developed with different programming

languages and technologies.
