    O ne of the rst 16 Universities inIndia, the University of Keralawas founded as the University ofTravancore in the erstwhile princelystate of Travancore (now southernpart of Kerala and some neighboringparts of the state of Tamil Nadu) in1937. During the 7 decades since, theUniversity of Kerala grew and shrunkphysically and transformed itselfin many ways. The earliest originsof the University may be tracedback to two institutions of modernlearning in Kerala, the UniversityCollege, Thiruvananthapuram andthe Trivandrum Observatory. The

    University College was initiallyfounded as the Maharajas FreeSchool by Maharaja Swathi Thirunalin 1836, with Mr John Roberts, aChristian missionary as Headmaster,and soon grew into a college in 1866,a liated to the Madras University.When the University of Travancorewas founded, the Departments ofthe college became the University

    Departments. The TrivandrumObservatory was founded in 1838and had an internationally reputedscientist, John Caldecott FRS asits rst Director. It is now theoldest institution under the KeralaUniversity.

    At present, the University has sixteenfaculties (subject groups) andforty two departments of teachingand research in addition to studycentres and other departments.Teaching, research and knowledgeextension are the mandates ofthe Departments. They primarilyfocus on post-graduate (masters)

    programmes, MPhil programmes (1-year research degree) and doctoralresearch. The University has a totalstudent population of about 65,000in various institutions. Universitysresearch activities are also going onin selected a liated colleges andother recognized research centresin and outside the state. In 2013, theUniversity awarded 200 PhDs. The

    total number of full-time studin the University Departmenabove 2000 including a mnumber of foreign students.     since 1946 the Journal of IndianHistory, a prominent publication inthe area. The Manuscript Libraryof the University is a treasure troveof Indian culture. The library hasover 65,000 works in 30,000 copiesmainly of palm leaf manuscripts,in addition to paper manuscripts,copper plates, birch bark andtextiles. The manuscript collectionalso includes those belonging toBurma, Malaysia, Indonesia, Nepaletc. The University of Kerala is wellknown for empowering its students.The University Union, DepartmentsUnion, Research Students Unionare all forums that are establishedthrough democratic process andpositions in these forums are

    ercely competed. Elected studentrepresentatives have membershipin supreme bodies of the Universitysuch as Senate, Academic Counciland also Syndicate, the executivecommittee of the University.     University has published an Englishtranslation of the classic Dutch work,Hortus Malabaricus a 20-volumetreatise on plant wealth of Kerala, in2003.

    T he Department of Arabic, wasestablished in 2001 with anobjective to mould a young society,who have the extreme capabilityto handle Arabic and Englishlanguages simultaneously, whichare very essential to cope with thechallenges of the time. The coursesin the department emphasizeon professional, technical andcommercial areas of translationalong with literature. To attain thisobjective the department o ersvarious courses like, Ph.D, M.Phil,M.A and Diploma in Translation.The department of Arabic has been

    approved by the governmentalagencies like the Ministry of Home& the o ce of the Protector ofEmigrants as their approvedtranslation and attestation centre.

    The contribution of the departmenthas been highly appreciated by the

    academic community as well asgeneral public. Also the Departmenthas extending all supports to theUniversity for the Development ofthe academic quality and publicutility services mainly in translation

    elds. Considering the publicinterest the Department o erstranslation services from English toArabic and vice versa. Number ofstudents was passed in NET, SET andother competitive examinations.

    The Department of Arabic hasplayed an important role to givelearners a sound understandingof Arabic language and literature.

    The learners would develop anunderstanding of Islamic literatureof their choice in the proper historicalperspective. A good knowledgeof reading comprehension andwriting skills are pre- requisite forthe program. The program o ers

    an aesthetic sense, enhance elocution; and encourage the writing ofnovels, short stories and poetry.

    The department began o ering courses from 2001. Since then, onehundred and fteen students have graduated from the department,students who are now employed in teaching, Translation, and culturalrelations. The department has seven faculty members, who are engagedin scholarly activities both on and o the campus. Through research inliterature and linguistics, they are constantly improving the educationalstandards of the department. In addition, members of the department areinvolved in producing Arabic educational texts and books.

    During the period department has organized number of seminars andworkshops out of which four of them was with a nature of internationaland two national. The seminars on the Teachings of Holy Quran 2010, andHadith in 2012 conducted by the department were the milestone in thehistory of the Department as well as the University of Kerala.

    T he programme intends to teach students Arabic language and literatureas it has good scope both at national and international level.
