Global Innovation Initiative
trengthening global research through multilateral partnerships
The Globa l Innov a t ion In i t ia t ive (GII) i s a shared comm itmen t o f the Un i ted K ingdom and the Un i ted S ta tes
to support multilateral research collaboration between universities in the UK US and designated countries.
GII will fund grants to university consortia focused on science, technology, engineering and mathematics
STEM)-related issues of worldwide significance. The initiative is funded by the British Council, the
Depa r tment fo r Bus iness, Innova t ion and Sk i l ls and the US D epar tme nt o f S ta te.
Goals of the Global Innovation Initiative
To increase the globa l mobi l i ty of students, res earcher, facul ty and higher educat ion
adm inistrators from the UK, US an d the selected countr ies;
To deve lop a cadre o f peop le in the UK, US and se l ected count r ies who have the in terna t iona l
exper ience, ou t l ook an d know ledge to conf ront g loba l cha ll enges an d opera te in a g loba l
context;
To encou rage in t e rna t io na l co l labo ra ti o ns tha t deve l o p capaci ty a cro ss a r a nge o f un i ve r s it ie s i n
the UK, the US, an d the selected countr ies; an d
To f orge un i ve r s it y a nd bus iness l in kages wh ich suppo r t a gl oba l ly mob i le t a l en t p ool a nd a
m ul t inat iona l base for the exchange of d iscovery and innov at ion.
Priority Areas
The fo l low ing them es a re p r io r ity a reas fo r the com pet i t ion, and ap p l ica t ions m ust be subm it ted in one o f the
fo l lowing categor ies:
Energy, env i ronme nt and c l im ate change
Urban deve l o pm en t
Agricu l ture, food security an d water
Global hea l th
Interdiscip l inary approaches to the research proposa l , including the humanit ies and socia l sciences, are
welcome d p rov ided tha t the rese a rch foundat ion l i es w i thin S TEM d isc ip lines.
Grant Opportunities
The Global Innovation Initiative will provide grant support for multilateral research collaboration among
higher educat ion inst i tut ions in the UK, the US and designate d countr ies. The grants ran ging from 100,000
to 150,000 will support multi-year collaborations that foster cutting-edge multinational research and
strengthen institutional partnerships. Two parallel but separate grant competitions will be offered in the UK
and US and w i l l requ i re a t l east on e h igher educa t ion ins t i tu t ion f rom the UK, US, and a n ins t i tu t ion f rom a t
least one designated country to apply together. Partners with a UK lead institution will apply to the UK
comp et i t ion, and those w i th a US l ead ins t i tu t ion w i l l app ly to the US com pet i t ion. The grant com pet i t ion fo r
both countries will open on August 18, 2014 and close on 31 October 2014. The British Council will
adm inister the UK com pet it ion and the Inst i tute of Internat iona l Educat ion wil l adm inister the US com pet it ion.
Designated Countries
Global Innovation Initiative grants are intended to bring mutual benefit to higher education institutions
through the enhancement of existing bilateral ties and the development of trilateral relationships with
emerging economies. The Department for Business Innovation and Skills and the US Department of State
have identified the following four emerging economies as selected countries for the Global Innovation
Initiative:
Brazil China India and Indonesia.
