Pathways . July 2018 Term 3 Dear Parents, The transitions for school-aged children between the Montessori subplanes are times of change for your child and also for you as a parent. Parents often ask about the processes that we have in place to ensure that we have positive transitions for all. During the term before your child is expected to move up to the next subplane, which usually happens around the child’s sixth, ninth or twelfth birthday, their teacher will notify the office that your child is ready to move to the next subplane. The principal will decide which class your child will move into based on a variety of factors: the child’s needs, the classes and their current configuration and needs, including the ratio of girls to boys, and staff input. This is a carefully balanced process. There are several key considerations that need to be made when deciding on a class for your child. We do not allow choice making by parents as this would make class allocation extremely difficult. Reasons for a child not being able to join a class of the parents’ choice might not always be apparent, for example, a class may have already reached capacity with no students transitioning into an older class and so there would not be any spaces available. Please trust in our processes as these have been developed over many years with our best intentions for the children. It is our goal that each child's transition proceeds smoothly but as each child is an individual, there is always flexibility that allows the child to follow his own path. After all, ‘development is a series of rebirths’ (The Absorbent Mind) and we need to give a child's transition consideration and care. Parents are informed of details of the transition around week 5 by email. Students will begin visiting their new class, usually in weeks 7, 8 and 9, in a way that fits in well with class routines. The aim is that the child will visit several times, gain an understanding of and familiarity with the new environment and be ready to fully integrate into the new class in the new term. Pathways .July 2018Term 3

Dear Parents,

The transitions for school-aged children between the Montessori subplanes are times of change for your child and also for you as a parent.

Announcements

Staff Changes We are pleased to announce that Helen Li has joined Laura Rinaldi to assist in Acacia.

happens always depends on the child as an individual and there is flexibility around this. Children transitioning out of Lotus or Infant and Toddler as well as incoming children will have a different experience settling in to the school.

Last term our school introduced a 'rite of passage' acknowledgement ceremony for all transitioning students. Parents are invited to attend the school meeting when this takes place. We are excited about this change to the transition process because students are recognised for the work they have completed in building themselves over the past three years in their current class and are also welcomed into their new environment. As this has proved to be very valuable, we will continue these ceremonies each term for transitioning students.

Reminders

Lower Primary Camp The Lower Primary students will be heading to PGL Kindilan camp, Redland Bay, on Thursday 9 August and returning on Friday 10 August.

Parking When you park in the car park next to the middle footpath, please ensure your car is parked within the marked lines and that the footpath remains clear for pedestrians. Please be mindful that if your car protrudes over the path, the risk of an accident increases.

Please do not park in Mactier Street during school hours. This is a no standing zone because it is on a hill and drivers might not see your child.

Parent emails about absences For any planned or unplanned absences, please email your child’s class director and let the office know as well (you can copy [email protected] into your email). You can also contact the school telephonically and leave a message on the absence line (33270600).

Yours for our children

Upcoming Events

MS ReadathonDuring August, the Primary and Middle School classes will participate in the MS Readathon, a reading-based fundraiser run by Multiple Sclerosis Australia (MSA). The children will be encouraged to read as many books as possible, not only for the enjoyment of reading, but also to raise community awareness and to make a difference in the lives of people who live with multiple sclerosis (MS). Your child’s class will gather on a regular basis to share their reading journey and to assist with raising funds by bringing in a gold coin donation. You also have the option to assist by donating on the school’s team fundraising page, however there is no obligation to do so. Please see the link below if you would like to help. https://www.msreadathon.org.au/fundraisers/Brisbane-Montessori-School

Sports Days The Children’s House classes will be participating in their annual sports day on Thursday 16 August. The Primary and Middle Schools will have their sports day on Friday 17 August. Parents are very welcome to come and enjoy the day with us, and to encourage and cheer the children on. If you can help with setting up or timing/measuring on the day please email Stephen Green at [email protected]. Please arrive at school by 8:50am, ensuring your child is wearing their class colour and enclosed running shoes, and has a sun safe hat, a water bottle, and sunscreen on.
