BRINGING BACK THE NEANDERTHALS
(And onwards to the Chickenosaurus)
Who, or what, were neanderthals?
A species of humanoids that died out and entered extinction approximately 35,000 – 125,000 years ago
Previously thought to be short, 5 feet average. Now known to have been similar to humans in height
Speculation as to whether they partook in cannibalism
BRINGING BACK THE NEANDERTHALS
• Share 99.7% of DNA with humans• German scientists extracted
usable DNA samples from Neanderthal bones
• Difficult to find good samples due to age of specimen and human contamination
• Hypothetically, could be brought to life for $30 million
Controversy• Chance to bring back an extinct
species that has promising intellectual abilities
• Argument of being unethical• Lonely and sad for neanderthal if project is successful

Making the CHICKENOSAURUS
What madness is this “Chickenosaurus” you speak of?
• Concept started by Jack Horner and Hans Larsson• Idea of modifying genetic code of birds• Chickens ideal candidates• Make dormant traits active again, give chickens dinosaur qualities
• Chickens, as well as all birds, are direct descendents of the ancient dinosaurs
• All creatures have atavisms (historic, now un used coding) in their DNA
• Therefore, all birdshave certain traits in their DNA that is similar to dinosaurs!
DINOSAURS ARE AMONG US
Implications and Uses
• Relatively small changes to chicken appearance (tail, hands, teeth)
• Proof and teaching tool for evolution• Successful gene manipulation would open new
doors of possibility in solving medical mysteries
