All of Caponi Art Park programming, on and off-site, are inclusive of any individual or group that wishes to participate in the workshops.We will work closely with you to tailor our visit to your classroom and curriculum goals.

CaponiCaponi on the Road workshops are based on the concept of learning artistic practices and principles through exploring the natural world. Through your choice of workshop, your student’s appreciation for art will flourish and their understanding of art concepts and techniques will grow.

Your students will experience Caponi Art Park through photographs and park facts, get up close to a sculpture by Anthony Caponi, the park’s founder, and explore the connections between art and nature, all in their own classroom.

Our trained staff has years of experience teaching art to learners of all ages. We will provide students with nature-based materials and guide them as they create a project they will be proud to display.

TheThe brief workshops, lasting 45-60 minutes, can be adapted to learners’ of all abilities. We aim to create workshops and supplementary materials that meet the needs of all participants.

Every year the MN State Fair showcases seed mosaics from all over the state. In our workshop, students will continue this great tradition by creating works of seed art. Students will learn about the history and techniques of mosaic art and create a design of their own! Once completed, students will share this Minnesotan art form with their friends & families.

Ages pre k-adult, $7/personSeed Mosaic: A MN Tradition

Mask Making Ages pre k-12, $8/personFrom the jungle to the ocean, and everything in between, students will create creatures of all kinds in the form of a mask. Masks are constructed using a paper base and are then adorned with a variety of different materials, which introduces students to the world of mixed media art. Once their animal creations have come to life, students will be encouraged to impersonate and discover their favorite animals through play! animals through play!

Ages pre k-7, $7/personRe-discover the simple childhood pleasure of running around outside with a brightly colored pinwheel. From the natural beauty around the park, students will create rubbings on paper which they will color and assemble into their pinwheels. The final product will be a whirlwind of fun as participants carry them along the trails during the tour.

Patterns of the Park

Can you see that spider spinning its web on the sculpture or the tiny bits of moss growing at your feet? In this workshop students will create their own nature viewers. Students will use paint, markers and collage to put their personal stamp on their nature viewers. Following this workshop, students will be taken on a guided tour of the park, where they can use their new nature viewers to focus on difocus on different textures, shapes and colors!

Leaf Printing Ages 8-17, $11/personMuch like us, trees and their leaves come in all shapes and sizes. Thinking about the unique lines and shapes of the leaves, students will create their own brightly colored prints. Participants will learn about the different species of trees in the park and a several different printing techniques. They will leave the park with a final product that is both colorful and compositionally sound!

Using recycled materials, students will learn how weaving and color can make a visual beat that will wiggle into your brain like the latest hit song. Adapted from our 2017 community art project, participants will have the opportunity to create their own personal-sized project. Students will use recycled fabric and yarn to weave their creations onto a wire-hanger loom. The weaving will be perfect for bringing a little joy outside or inside!a little joy outside or inside!

Wire Hanger Weaving Ages 8-14, $11/person

Carve out your spot in the world of printmaking with this introduction to relief printing. Students will be given a short history of printing and of the techniques needed to realize their image on paper. Students will use simple materials to create reproducible works of art. Move over Gutenberg, a new generation of printmakers are coming!

Printmaking: Basic Relief Printing Ages 8-14, $11/person

Ages pre k-adult, $8/personFrom weasel hair to natural materials, brushes can be made out of anything. Using materials found around the park, participants will create their own tools to paint with. Thinking about how they can representent their ideas in as few shapes and lines as possible, students will create an abstract painting unique to the tools they made from scratch.

Abstracting the Everyday

Intro to Color Wheel Theory Every budding artist needs to learn the basics before they can secure their place in the art history books. By mixing paints to create a color wheel, they will learn about primary, secondary, and tertiary colors, how they are made, and where they belong on this chart. Students will walk away with a hand-held guide for their masterpieces yet to come!

Ages 8-17, $8/person

Throw and Sow: Guerilla Wildflowers Ages 8-17, $12/personCaponi Art Park is making a pollinator garden, and we need your help ensuring that the pollinators have places to eat and rest throughout the greater metro area. In this workshop, students will create acorns out of clay, seeds, and other natural materials to be planted around their communities during the spring and summer. Students will learn about the types of pollinators, the plants they are pollinating, and why thisthis is important for sustaining the ecosystem. Students will be able to take their acorn home to start their own pollination garden!

NEW! Capture the feeling of an old Marvel comic book page, or

even a Lichtenstein painting, using only dots to compose your picture. Pointillism uses tiny dots of pure color to compose a larger image. Using Q-tips and a variety of paint colors, students will use their imagination to produce a Pointillism painting that rivals Marvel’s Spiderman.

Watercolor Resists Ages 8-17, $10/person

NEW! Like a hidden message on a pirate’s treasure map, paint will

reveal the picture that lays beneath the paint. Using their imaginations, students will compose a picture. The image they have created will only be revealed once watercolor paints have been applied to the entire image. You will have to wait and see what hidden treasure awaits!

An estimated number of participants to be sure we have the right amount of staff and workshop materials.

That you provide a space, inside or out, that is large enough for your students to fully participate in the activities.

A travel fee will be added to the cost of the workshop based on the distance to your site.>10 miles --- $1510-19 miles --- $2520-25 miles (Max.) --- $30

TheseThese prices will account for travel expenses and setup time when we arrive at your site. The travel fee will be added to the final invoice following the workshop.

Scheduling your Caponi on the Road visit

Paper Making Ages 12-adult, $15/person, Max size: 15Be creative and climate-friendly by upcycling and repurposing just like Anthony Caponi! He create Caponi Art Park by using old materials to create new sculptures, walls and paths. Using that same passion, students will use recycled paper scraps and old newspapers, along with natural elements, to create a brand new piece of paper. At the end of the class students will take home their new multipurpose work of art!multipurpose work of art!

Avian ArchitectureOur feathered friends at Caponi Art Park need a space to rest their head and raise their young, just like humans. Some of them build nests, but others, like the Purple Martin, are completely reliant on man to build homes for them! In this workshop students will use basic carpentry skills to build birdhouses, while learning about the birds that call Minnesota home. Natural MonoprintsLearn how to harness the power of the sun to create your very own nature print by useing natural materials from the park. Students will leave the park with a better understanding of the history of printing and printmaking techniques. Don’t forget, they will also have a print worthy of displaying on the walls!

Ages 12-17, $15/person

Nature JournalsEngage with the natural world through the art of bookmaking! After their books are bound, students will embark on the tour, taking rubbings of natural textures and textures from the sculptures throughout the park. These journals will be a showcase of what they observe and learn from their experience at Caponi Art Park and can be used on future adventures in nature, too.

Where to find us if you want to visit in the future!

TheThe park entrance is on the south side of Diffley Road. Look for the bright yellow park sign and the red gate at the entrance. In the future, you may choose to visit the park on your own or you can contact the program coor-dinator to schedule a tour and workshop. Caponi Art Park is not open during the winter and early spring due to extreme temperatures and the potential for icy trails.

While you’re at the park please:Respect those in your group and other park visitors.Walk while on tour - no running. Only use your hands to touch the sculptures at the park.Do not climb on any of the parks sculptures, land-scaping or walls.Listen while your guide is talking so that everyone in your group can hear. Ask questions. They help everybody to learn!

Group Tour PoliciesScheduling:Scheduling: Workshops can be scheduled any weekday the park is open,Tuesday through Friday. Workshops may be scheduled on Monday’s based on availability. We will ask for an estimate of the number of participants in your group to be sure we have the right amount of staff and workshop materials available. A $20 deposit is required to hold your reservation and will be credited to your total amount due.

ChangeChange in the Number of Participants: If you know the size of your group will be significantly different than your original estimate, please contact us at least two weeks prior to your scheduled visit.

CancellationCancellation Policy: Groups cancelling two weeks or more prior to the scheduled date of our visit will receive a full refund minus the $20 deposit. Groups cancelling less than two weeks prior to their scheduled date will be billed the full program fee.

ReschedulingRescheduling Policy: If your group chooses to reschedule our visit, we will try to accommodate your request based on availability. Groups who contact us two weeks or more prior to our original scheduled date will not be charged a reservation fee to reschedule. Groups who contact our program coordinator less than two weeks prior to their originally scheduled date will be assessed a $20 reservation fee in addition to the cost of the reschedule program. reschedule program.
