BELLE OF THE BALL? The highlight of Belmont’s Breeders’ Cup Preview Weekend is the $750,000 GI Beldame S., where morning-line favorite Sightseek (Distant View) will seek to double up on her victory in last year’s edition. In 2003, however, the powerful chestnut faltered in the GI Breeders’ Cup Distaff after her Beldame win, costing her any chance at an Eclipse Award. Trainer Bobby Frankel doesn’t seem to have that schedule in mind this time. “We'll see,” Frankel said when asked about the possibility of run- ning Sightseek in the Distaff. “There's a very outside chance. I wouldn’t bet on it.” Sightseek crushed overmatched foes by 11 1/4 lengths in the GI Ruffian H. Sept. 19, which left her perfect in five starts over Belmont’s sweeping oval. Her natural speed makes her doubly tough in this compact field. “There's no pace in the race,” Frankel pointed out. “That's fine. She’ll just go to the front.” Beldame cont. p2-3 CHAMPAGNE WISHES The most accomplished two-year-old colt in the coun- try, unbeaten Afleet Alex (Northern Afleet) figures to be a heavy favorite in the GI Champagne S. at Belmont. An impressive winner of the GII Sanford S. July 29 at the Spa, the Delaware-based bay had a troubled trip in the GI Hopeful S. Aug. 21, but showed grit in getting up to win by a neck. “There was a lot he overcame in the Hope- ful,” said trainer Tim Ritchey. “He was jammed behind horses early and was in a spot most horses would just give up and finish third in. He ducked out in the stretch and he looked beat before straightening out and accelerating.” Champagne cont. p4 A NEW MODEL Much of the talk ahead of yesterday’s GII Darley Alcibiades S. centered on Sense of Style (Thunder Gulch), but the 3-5 chalk fell victim to a poor trip as Runway Model (Petionville) came storming up the out- side to take the $400,000 feature on Keeneland’s opening day. She had been second by a neck in the Bassinet S. Sept. 4 and was the runner-up once again in the GIII Arlington-Washington Lassie S. Sept. 19. Getting Lasix for the first time here, the dark bay set- tled near the back of the pack, with Sense of Style tucked in behind the leaders. The favorite had no run- ning room approaching the stretch, while longshot Runway Model had clear sailing on the outside and just got up in the last jump. Sense of Style’s loss crushed the bridgejumpers. “She handled everything beautifully, but that horse stopped in front of me, and that was that,” said her rider Edgar Prado. Champion Storm Flag Flying got her career back ontrack last out when rallying past Azeri to take the GIPersonal Ensign H. at Saratoga Aug. 27. Trainer Shug

McGaughey, inducted into theHall of Fame this summer, ishoping the four-year-old canmaintain her momentum. “I hopethat she can step it up a little bitnow, run well here Saturday, then go on and be competitive inthe Breeders’ Cup,” he said.“She’s a lot more settled and alot easier to be around now.”Winner of last year’s GI Frizette

S., Society Selection staked her claimfor a divisional title by doubling up vic-tories at Saratoga in the GI Test S. July31 and the GI Alabama S. Aug. 21.Both of those victories came with theaddition of Lasix. Can the Cowanhomebred keep her winning streak alivewhile facing her elders for the firsttime? “There’s going to be a much dif-ferent situation here,” said trainer AllenJerkens. “There’s not much speed inthe race. It’s easier on us when there’sbig speed in front of us. Good horses have to learn toovercome that if they’re going to reach the heights.”

Though, it is highly uncharacteristic for trainer NeilHoward to enter a maiden in a race at this level, thefact that he has done so speaks highly of the chancesof Patriot Act. TATTERSALLS PART 1 CONCLUDES Part 1 ofTattersalls’ new-look October Sale ended yesterdayafter realising 52,631,500gns for 512 head. The clear-ance rate was 72 percent, but sales company officials

will only make comparisonswith 2003 after Part 2 iscomplete next week. “It isdifficult to make compari-sons with last year...we willhave a further 1,300 year-lings to come next weekbefore a truly accurate pic-ture will emerge, but overallit has been a satisfactorytransition away from theprevious format,” saidTattersalls Chairman

Edmond Mahony. “The very top of the market has notmatched last year, when we sold a record number ofseven-figure yearlings, but, as ever, smart individualshave not been short of admirers. And the leading buy-ers in the European market have yet again made asignificant impact throughout the week, as have newfaces from Japan and Hong Kong.” He continued,“Having moved away from the ‘select sale’ format, wewould have liked to have seen more trainers involvedfrom the very start of proceedings, but as the week hasprogressed they have become increasingly active andPart 2 of the sale has plenty more to offer.” There wasno doubting yesterday's star of the show, a filly bySadler's Wells out of Shouk (GB) (Shirley Heights {GB})consigned through Timmy Hyde’s Camas Park Stud. The filly had a major pedigree update nine days agowhen her 3/4-sister Magical Romance (Ire) (Barathea{Ire}) won the G1 Cheveley Park S. BBA Ireland'sAdrian Nicoll outbid Sheikh Hamdan Al Maktoum'sracing manager Angus Gold, going to 420,000gns forthe bay. Nicoll did not reveal the name of the filly’snew owner, saying only, “She's for a longstandingoverseas client and will either be trained in Britain orIreland.” He added, “She probably cost double whatshe would have made last week.” Part 2 of the salebegins Monday at 11 a.m. Complete results and cata-logues are available on www.tattersalls.com.

SCHWARTZ TO RESIGN FROM NYRA In a state-ment issued Friday afternoon, Barry K. Schwartz an-nounced his intention to step down as the New YorkRacing Association’s Chairman and Chief ExecutiveOfficer, effective Dec. 31, 2004. Schwartz, 62, cameon board NYRA in 2000. “When I took the helm atNYRA four years ago, the future of the organizationwas very much in question,” Schwartz said in his state-ment. “NYRA was facing investigations from the NewYork attorney general, the New York state comptroller, the New York State Racing and Wagering Board, andthe United States Attorney's Office concerning allega-tions of general mismanagement and tax fraud by cer-tain of its pari-mutuel employees. Moreover, NYRA'sfinancial situation was seriously deteriorating, withoperating costs spiraling out of control and revenuesfrom on-track handle diminishing. Today, with the helpof its federal monitor, NYRA has put the cloud of suspi-cion and investigation behind it. Moreover, NYRA hasfound new and innovative ways to operate more effi-ciently, by reducing its operating costs and derivingmore revenue from its racing product. NYRA is wellpositioned to face the challenges that lay ahead, suchas the implementation of a large-scale video lotterycasino at Aqueduct and securing an extension of itsfranchise from the state to conduct pari-mutuel wager-ing on its races.” NYRA is expected to announce a newPresident and CEO shortly.
