breastfeeding

Steven Tooze 3/1/15 Breastfeeding Video The biggest thing I took away from the video was the different positions that a woman could use while breastfeeding. When my wife was in the hospital I remember a lactation consultant coming to visit and speaking to her about the various positions. We had been awake for the better part of 36 intense, stressful hours, and while I remember her talking about football and side lying, I honestly wasn’t paying much attention. Fast forward almost two years and I am expected to be familiar enough with these positions to answer questions by patients if they come up. Reading examples in books and even talking to someone, my wife, about all the different positions helped, but I think the video really pulled it all together and let me get a better idea of what to say for each position. I also remember my wife having an issue with her nipple getting cracked. We went through a vast assortment of different products recommended by Amazon before she was finally able to find some relief. The video advises using expressed breast milk on the affected area, after cleaning, and allowing it to air dry. I don’t recall if we tried that, but it is a simpler approach to advise new mothers to attempt before opening their wallets to purchase various creams/ointments. The video was quick to sit through, informative, and well put together. While not the best substitute for actually observing a lactation consultant interact and educate a patient, I feel more comfortable discussing breastfeeding techniques and issues with patients after having watched it.
