Join the premier pre-professional teaching residency in the country. Gain valuable teaching skills, leadership skills, and experience in an energetic community. Work with amazing middle-school students on the path to college.

• Participate in a nine-week summer residency with living stipend

• Receive 100+ hours of teaching and leadership training

• Teach at one of our 25 affiliates throughout the US and in Hong Kong

• Learn lesson planning, classroom management, instructional strategies, feedback techniques, and other essential teaching tools

• Lead family conferences and participate in meetings

• Receive coaching from professional educators

• Teach core academic classes (math, science, writing, literature) and enrichment classes (e.g., foreign language, dance, art)

• Collaborate with other exceptional undergraduate teaching fellows in a challenging but fun and supportive environment

• Work with a diverse group of highly motivated students from under-resourced communities

You may be wondering if Breakthrough is for you? Breakthrough is a great opportunity for hard-working undergraduates – both those planning careers in education and those interested in trying teaching out for a summer. Education coursework is not a requirement; students from all majors are welcome to apply. We seek applicants with a deep interest in social justice and a passion for working with students. Our teaching fellows must be committed to personal growth and comfortable working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment. Because we celebrate the diversity of our community, we seek undergraduate applicants from diverse backgrounds and life experiences.

As a teaching fellow, you’ll work with dedicated middle-school students who often attend under-resourced schools. You’ll challenge your students with rigorous academics while also providing support and designing fun enrichment activities. Research shows that students from lower-income backgrounds can lose up to two months of math and literacy skills over the summer. At Breakthrough, our students make summer gains, leading to intellectual growth and contributing to their academic success. Join Breakthrough and share in this vital work.

Our Application ProcessApply to Breakthrough today!

The Breakthrough teaching-fellow application is rigorous. To complete your application, be prepared with the following:

• Personal and contact information

• A resume including your extracurricular and work experiences

• Contact information for a recommender (whom we will contact)

• An unofficial copy of your transcript (uploaded as an attachment)

• Three short essays (see instructions on the application)

• Site and teaching-subject preferences

If you advance in the process you may also be asked to submit a mock teaching video and participate in an interview.

As a pioneer in education reform, Breakthrough is more than an organization. We are a nation-wide movement, tackling the achievement gap with a groundbreaking approach. We increase academic opportunity for highly motivated middle- and high-school students, putting them on the path to college; provide best-in-class pre-professional training for undergraduate teaching fellows; and offer leadership opportunities for professional educators, who serve as instructional coaches. We do this work across a collaborative network of 25 affiliates throughout the US and in Hong Kong.
