STUDY SKILLS TIP FOR AUGUST: Myth Busting Multi-Tasking

Multi-tasking? Myth or reality? It all depends on who you talk to.

Ask any student and they will tell you they can multi-task with ease. Do homework, watch TV, listen to music and check their phone all at the same time, no problem. Ask the academic researchers though and a different story emerges.

Dr. Larry Rosen, Professor of Psychology at California State University, explains that what is actually occurring in this ‘multi-tasking’ is ‘task switching’. Instead of doing two things at once, students are actually switching their focus from one task to another and back again, in a parallel fashion, at high speed, resulting in them staying on task for an average of only 65% of the time period and for a maximum of only 3-5 minutes at a time. Constant task-switching results in it taking much longer to complete the individual tasks not just due to the interruptions, but also because there are delays as the brain switches between tasks and refocuses. This brief bottleneck in the prefrontal cortex delays the start of the next task and the more intense the distraction, the longer it will take the brain to react. A study conducted by Dr. Rosen’s team sent varying numbers of text messages to students in a lecture then tested the students on the content of the lecture. The results were surprising, it was not the number of interruptions that negatively impacted results, it was the time taken by the students to react to the interruptions. Students who responded immediately performed worst on the tests. Those who considered when to check the message and respond (ie in a part of a lecture they deemed less relevant) performed significantly better. What we can learn from this is that students need to become more aware of their ‘task-switching’ and make conscious decisions as to when they choose to shift their focus – instead of being enslaved by their technology and at its constant beck and call. We need to teach students that this constant mental task shifting (even thinking about the technology has the same effect as actually checking the technology) takes oxygen and brain activity away from what they are learning. We need to convince our students that it is ok and even necessary to wait, that they don’t have to respond immediately and do have the ability to delay their check-in with the cyber world. It is all about learning that we can control our selective attention and choose to ignore distractions. We need to train the brain to stop thinking constantly about technology. However, resistance for too long can create anxiety and a fear of missing out, creating ‘continuous partial attention’ in students as oxygen is diverted to activate and maintain thoughts about social media at the expense of classroom material. Dr. Rosen’s team has determined the best approach for students who find it difficult to pull back from their technology devices is to set an alarm on their phone for short regular ‘tech breaks’. They may start with 15 minutes and gradually increase this amount over time to around 30 minutes. The phone will be face down on their desk on silent mode or off, and when the alarm rings they let themselves check messages and status updates for a minute or two, then set the alarm again. Dr. Rosen’s studies found that knowing they can check in 15 minutes creates less anxiety, whereas depriving them of the phone completely did not stop them thinking or obsessing about possible e-communications which took away from their ability to focus fully on their homework. It all comes back to teaching the concept of focus.

Page 3: Breaking News …. RBSC Boys Win Basketball Competition ... · Head over to the news page to read the latest on our honour roll presentation, basketball success, the band festival

Finally, Dr. Rosen argues that we cannot simply remove technology and other distractions; they are too intricately woven into students' daily lives. Instead students should learn metacognitive skills to help them understand when and how to switch their attention between multiple tasks or technologies. Course Selection for Years 9 and 11 2013 We had a huge parent and student participation on the course selection evening on the 24

th July and would like to

thank all our parents for their involvement with this important event. To date, all of the students’ interests in the subjects on offer have been received and the timetable committee will be presenting this data to the Executive Team for the next four weeks. Subjects will then be put onto lines and students placed on these lines. All Year 10 students will be interviewed by a Subject Selection Panel which consists of the Deputy Principals, Head Teachers, Year Advisers and the Careers Adviser. Students will have an opportunity to reflect on their subject choices, their interests, their academic achievements to date, and their career path. Some students will change their subjects at this point in time, and if this is the case, their parents will be informed. Students will be informed of their subjects around week 2 of next term.

Our Year 12 Students Our Year 12 students will complete their Trial Examinations by Mon 13 August. We welcome them back to normal routine on Tue 14 August after two and half weeks of intense study and examinations. There are not many weeks left to finish off their subjects contents and go through their trial exams with their teachers and we hope all students will utilize this time effectively. All Year 12 students and their parents are to mark this date on your calendar: September 19, as it is the Year 12 Graduation Day and all parents and family members are invited to celebrate the completion of 13 years of schooling at 6:00 pm on this day in the College Gymnasium.

Overdue library resources - procedure Students are welcome to borrow resources from the library all year around. The student loan period for most resources is 2 weeks. Items may be renewed if they have not been reserved by another borrower. The library procedure for overdue books is to send reminder slips every two weeks to students to return or renew books. If students ignore reminder slips, text messages will be sent to parents to request assistance in locating missing books and returning to library promptly. Please reply to text acknowledging whether book(s) is being returned or replaced. Unfortunately, if no appropriate action is taken by your child to return long overdue items they will be placed on after school detention. In most cases students are just very forgetful and could avoid after school detention; please assist your child to locate books – especially since other students are often waiting patiently for the items. Thank you in advance for your support in this matter. The Calendar

Page 5: Breaking News …. RBSC Boys Win Basketball Competition ... · Head over to the news page to read the latest on our honour roll presentation, basketball success, the band festival

Letters reminding students of the use of MATHLETICS have been given to students who have not used nor paid for MATHLETICS. Please talk to your child to make sure that MATHLETICS is being used for the learning of Maths at home. If not, please make it happen. Ask your child to pay $20 at the Finance Office to use MATHLETICS at home and in school for the rest of the year or you can pay using credit card over the phone. Please contact Mr Lo at [email protected] if you have any question about the use of MATHLETICS.

The Maths Faculty is using MATHLETICS to enhance the learning of Maths for all students. Every year 7 and 8 Maths class will have at least 1 lesson per fortnight scheduled in a computer room using MATHLETICS and all years 7 to 10 Maths classes has to use MATHLETICS in some form every week. In addition, many students in year 11 and 12 choose to use MATHLETICS to consolidate their Maths skills and concepts.

Most students and parents agree that MATHLETICS is a fabulous resource which gives students an opportunity for extra practice in all topics and further explanations of key concepts they may be struggling with. Students can work at own pace and love to see the instant feedback it provides. Visit the website www.mathletics.com.au for details.

2013 Year 11 Subject Selection

There are 90 and 32 students choose to study Advanced Maths and General Maths respectively via Edval Webchoice. Out of these students, almost all of them are choosing Maths as their main preference with only 5 students choosing General Maths as their reserve preference. In order to support the students’ choice and ensure that those who intend to study Advanced Maths next year are fully equipped for the course, the Maths Faculty is running a “Advanced Maths Foundation Program” coordinated by Mr Tai. Many students have been invited to join the program already. Parents of these students please encourage your child to step up to the challenge ahead and learn from this program in order to have a smooth transition to the learning of Maths in Year 11 next year.

In addition, 38 Stage 5.3 Advanced Maths students have submitted application for Maths Extension. 34 of them are accepted and a list will be issued during Week 5. Mr Lo will work with the remaining students to support their aspiration and help them to achieve all necessary learning outcomes as required for this challenging Extension course.
