Bell’s greatest success was achieved on March 10, 1876, marking the birth of the telephone. The first sentence ever spoken over a telephone was uttered over this device on that day. The historic words, “Mr. Watson, come here; I want you” were uttered by Bell.

When the boy dialed the operator at the airport many years later, why did he ask the question “Could you tell me please, how to spell the word ‘fix’?”

It can be inferred that the boy must have asked the same question before when he was a little boy. He asked the question so that the operator could recognize him by asking the same question. As was expected, the operator identified the question and recognized the boy.

My Friend, the Telephone Operator

When I was quite young, my family had one of the first telephones in

our neighborhood. Soon I discovered that somewhere inside that wonderful

device lived an amazing person -- her name was “Information Please” and

there was nothing she did not know. My mother could ask her for anybody’s

number; when our clock stopped, Information Please gave us the correct

time at once.

One day while my mother was visiting a neighbor, I hit my finger with a

hammer. The pain was terrible and there was no one home to offer

sympathy. So I ran for the telephone and said “Information please” into the

mouthpiece. After a moment, a small, clear voice spoke into my ear.

“Information.”

Page 10: BR_Background Information1 Background Information (Alexander Graham Bell ) (Model of Alexander Graham Bell’s Telephone, 1875) Background Information Video

“I hurt my finger…” I cried into the phone.

“Isn’t your mother home?” came the question.

“Nobody’s home but me,” I sobbed.

“Are you bleeding?”

“No,” I replied. “I hit it with the hammer and it hurts.”

“Can you open your fridge?” she asked. I said I could. “Then break a

little piece of ice and put it on your finger. That will stop the hurt. And don’t

cry, you’ll be all right.”

After that, I called Information Please for everything. I asked her for help

with my lessons. I even called her for comfort because my pet bird died.

When I was nine, we moved from Seattle to Boston and I missed my friend

deeply. Information Please belonged to the old home, and I never thought

of trying the new phone on a small table in the hall.

I hadn’t planned this, but I heard myself saying. “Could you tell me

please, how to spell the word ‘fix’?”

There was a long pause. Then came the softly spoken answer. “I

guess,” said she, “that your finger must have gotten better by now.”

I laughed. “So it’s really still you,” I said. “I wonder if you have any idea

how much you meant to me during all that time…”

“I wonder,” she replied, “if you know how much you meant to me. I

never had any children, and I used to look forward to your calls.”

My new car was stolen. That almost drove me crazy.

We meet here at five o’clock. That ought to give you enough time to do your shopping.

This is what I want to say: you’re always thinking of yourself; you never think about what others need.

He may be working now. (=Perhaps he is working now.)He can’t have lost his passport. (=It is very unlikely that he has lost his passport.)You must have been disappointed when you heard the news. (=It was quite likely that you were disappointed when you heard the news.)

Many years later, on my way to college, my plane landed at Seattle. At

the airport, without thinking what I was doing, I dialed my hometown

operator and said, “Information Please.”

Then I heard again the small, clear voice I knew so well: “Information.”

Flowers are often used to express love and friendship.

这句话中的 used to 就不能与 would 互换。

Grammar Note:

When we were children, we used to / would play basketball every afternoon.

There used to be an small restaurant at the street corner.

look forward to & expectlook forward to

Summary Writing

Directions:Read Text B “The Road Is Never Too Long,” and write a summary of about 100 words. Note that your summary should include the main ideas of the story. Please pay attention to the use of conjunctions and conjunctive adverbs.

More than two years ago, I wrote a letter to a girl in Hungary, whom I had never seen before. Unexpectedly, she wrote a letter in reply. Being a shy and thoughtful girl, she gave me the comfort I needed at that time. Our letter writing continued and our friendship was strengthened. In order to meet my friend face to face, I did part-time jobs. Finally, I made my trip to the town where she lived. Despite the many difficulties like the distance and lack of money, we managed to see each other. We realized that the road to a friend’s house is never too long.

I have compared my choices with those made by my partner. Interestingly, I discover that we share very little in common. We have made different choices for most of the questions. For instance, I like spring best but he likes winter best; I like swimming but he enjoys skating; moreover, I love staying at home and watching TV during holidays, but he hates staying at home for a whole long holiday and his favorite activity is traveling. How different we are! Nevertheless, there is at least one thing that we have in common. Both of us like the language subject. After all, we both are language majors!

In the picture, there is a wooden fence. There are also two boys in blue T-shirts and jeans. They seem to be teenagers. It seems that they are trying to climb over the fence. However, the fence is much higher than them. They find out a way to overcome the difficulty. One of them stands at the foot of the fence and the other puts one foot on his friend’s hands and the other foot on the fence. It looks as if they can manage to climb over the fence. The two boys give each other help when they are faced with difficulty. I think that is what friendship means.

A year ago I came into the Internet world. I have met many friends, laughed, smiled, and even cried. One particular person, has touched me deeply... I just wanted him to know.

I never came here looking for a single soul. But now that I found you I want you to know

I had forgotten how to smile, how to laugh, how to be me I had forgotten the sweet pleasure of a heart filled with glee.

I was intoxicated with life... work and family Never stopping for fun... it just wasn’t there you see.

The poem is a very interesting one. It talks about how the cyber friend has changed the writer’s life. Before getting to know the friend, the writer found himself (or herself) deprived of pleasure and enthusiasm of life. However, things are changed when he (or she) gets into the Internet world. The new friend gives him (or her) fun and relaxation and meaning of life. I think the Internet offers us an amazing way to make friends. Distance is no longer a problem. With the Internet, it becomes easier for us to get to know someone who can share with us our happiness and sorrows.
