Everything else would not make sense. Not to us, at least.” What is equally important is that the user need not fear any negative side effects. Perfect safety and the optimal lubricating effect are what Karch and Schantz are striving for. This means that only those procedures and ingredients are used that can live up to the latest standards of quality. “We do not use any kind of cyclic sili- cone. We want to ensure that it is abso- lutely safe for every consumer to use our products,” Karch explains. “Apart from the ethical obligation, this modus operandi also has a positive side effect for us. After all, if a consumer is per- fectly happy with a product, it is very likely that he will buy it again. And again.” But whether a product becomes a success or a failure is decided not in the production facility, but in the stores. And it is actually of secondary impor- tance whether this store is down at the corner or on the Internet, as Karch continues. “What it boils down to is this: No matter where the customer bought it, our product will eventually end up in his home. Where he lives. Therefore, most people will not buy cheap, trashy products that emanate this air of shoddy pornography.” That is also the reason why such great store is set by clever, classy designs, the image of the brand, and the label. Ingo Schantz agrees with his partner: “Pornographic labels and this back-alley image are remnants of the past decade, and although you still find them in stores, they will eventually vanish altogether.” What customers want in the 21st century, he adds, are strong, successful brands that distinguish them- selves through quality, brand recogni- tion, design, and image. Meaning that, the very moment the consumer sees the product on the shelf – or on the web page of an online shop –, he will know that it is superior in quality and definitely worth its money. “Social and societal circumstances force many people to go with second-rate products sometimes. They have to make compro- mises, but we feel that they should not have to, at least not when it comes to important issues such as their own body, their sexual independence and self-determination, the realisation of their sexual desires.” Schantz and Karch also have a shared opinion of the lubricant market - and shared criticism for some of the market players: people who are copying other companies’ products and then stretch their financial muscles to give these rip- off products a veneer of originality and quality by way of elaborate marketing campaigns, who manipulate and bind their business partners through rigorous pricing. “And if they do not succeed that way, if their usual array of tools to basically bind their business partners are not enough, they bring out the heavy ordnance: sending their partners on an exotic vacation or besto- wing upon them other amenities of one sort or another. And, sadly enough, it works, strengthening the web they have woven around their partners, basically driving them into a state of dependence,” Karch illu- strates. Would he ever resort to such measures if push came to shove? No, he says, never. Not only would his sense of work ethics forbid any such practices, he is also convinced that this kind of strategy could never last. Before long, he predicts, these com- panies will have to rethink the way they operate or otherwise they will find themselves, their products, and their strategy becoming virtually ob- solete. “I have learned many things in all the years, and one of them is that, in order to be successful, you have to be absolutely honest and to- tally committed. And this includes an ethical code of conduct. That is also the reason why we use not only our minds, but also our hearts to guide us in our work. This has never been as easy as it is today, but at the same time it has never been as difficult.” Their success proves them right. And even in tough times such as these, when there is such a strain on the market and the industry, they seem more than prepared for the future. “As a matter of fact, we are kind of looking forward to seeing the next rip-offs appear on the market. We are not scared.
