DescriptionThe Durasan line consists ofDurasan® BRAND vinyl covered panels.All Durasan panels can be applieddirectly to studs or as a finish layerover gypsum board. Durasan pan-els are especially suited for mostdemountable partition systems.Because Durasan is prefinished, itis generally less expensive to installthan building a wall and thenapplying a wall covering material.

Durasan is the registered trademarkfor National Gypsum Companyprefinished gypsum wall panels.This quality paneling combines thetime-proven characteristics ofgypsum board with the beauty, col-ors, textures, and durability of awide variety of vinyl coverings.

Durasan can be toploaded ongypsum trucks and is availablefrom most National Gypsumplants. Some plants maintaininventories of the most popularcolors and patterns, which areavailable for immediate shipment.

NONCOMBUSTIBLE

Durasan panels are considerednoncombustible, since they meetthe following generally acceptedrequirements:

1. A structural base of noncom-bustible material such as gypsum.

2. A surface material not over 1/8"thick which has a flame spreadof not over 50.

FIRE RATED CONSTRUCTION

Assemblies employing Durasanpanels used as a wall surfacingmaterial have been accorded fireresistance ratings by Factory MutualResearch Corp. and UnderwritersLaboratories.

VAPOR PERMEANCE

The water vapor permeance ofDurasan panels is less than 1.0perms by theWet Cup Method andless than 0.5 perms by the Dry CupMethod at typical conditions of 73˚Fand 50% relative humidity, testedin accordance with ASTM E 96.Caution: Durasan vinyls are vaporretarders, and a second vaporretarder should not be placedbehind these products, i.e. kraftface insulation. For this reason, foilbacked Durasan is not available.

COLOR PERMANENCE

The high-quality vinyl surface ofDurasan panels offers good faderesistance. The vinyl films arespecially formulated with light-stable compounds and pigmentsto provide maximum stability andcolor retention under varyingenvironmental conditions.

CLEANING

Complete removal of dirt, stainsand marks is easier if cleaningaction is started before stainingmaterial has dried, cured or set.

To remove most common dirt andmarks, simply rub lightly with amoistened cloth, sponge or soft hairbristle brush, using a mild soap,detergent or non-abrasive cleaner.Then rinse with water and wipe dry.

More stubborn stains can be safelyremoved by wiping away excessmaterial, scrubbing the stained areawith a stiff bristle brush wettedwith appropriate solvent as listed inchart below, and quickly wiping drywith a clean cloth.

Caution: The use of strong organ-ic solvents (such as ketones), harshabrasive cleaners or steel wool arenot recommended. These materialsmay cause dulling, discoloration,softening and other permanentdamage to the vinyl surface.

Some proprietary solvent cleanersused for fabric spot stain removalmay remove the vinyl surfaceoverprint pattern.

If the suitability of any cleaningagent is unknown, check its effecton the Durasan surface in a hiddenarea or on a scrap piece beforeattempting to remove a field stain.

ABRASION RESISTANCE

Durasan panels are extremelyabrasion resistant, and are testedby a Taber Abraser with CS-17Calibrate wheels and a 500 gramloading. Durasan has withstoodover 10,000 revolutions withoutbreaking through the vinyl film.During this testing, some loss oftexture and overprint resulted.

PAINTING

Durasan is a factory-finish decorativeproduct which does not requirepainting.

However, if desired, Durasan canbe satisfactorily painted with thefollowing products:

1. Two coats of an alkyd or latexsemigloss enamel.

2. Oil primer with finish coat of oilpaint or flat latex.

3. Two coats of flat oil paint.

PATCHING

It is suggested that scraps ofDurasan be saved in case patchinga damaged area is necessary.Whenpatching small rips or tears, removethe vinyl film from a Durasan scrap.Place the film over the damagedarea and, using a razor blade orvery sharp knife, make straight cutsthrough both layers of film. Thedamaged film underneath is thenremoved and the patch cementedin its place with a good qualityvinyl-to-vinyl adhesive.

WALLCOVERING

Matching Durasan in30 Lineal Yard Rolls

Fabric-backed vinyl film is availablein most Durasan patterns, colorsand textures for field application toprovide a close, commercialcolor match for use on columns,curved surfaces or where extensivecutouts would make Durasan pan-els difficult to use. Because field-applied vinyl is fabric-backed, theDurasan panels and the com-plementary vinyl roll goodsmay vary slightly in color andtexture.

Durasan fabric-backed wallcoveringsmeet or exceed the criteria outlinedin Federal Specification CCC-W-408B.

LIMITATIONS

High Heat

Durasan panels have the samelimitations regarding heat as regulargypsum board and should not beused in areas where surface tem-peratures will exceed 125˚F.

Durasan panels are not suitable foruse behind stoves where directheat or steam could affect thepanel covering.

Moisture Conditions

Durasan panels should not be usedaround bath tubs, in shower enclo-sures or in areas where panels willbe subject to free moisture.

When Durasan panels abutconcrete floors and/or ceilings, cutthe panel to allow a minimum of1/8" clearance between panelsand floors and/or ceilings toprevent potential wicking.

Treated Lumber

If Durasan panels will be appliedover treated lumber, tests should beconducted prior to application to besure the chemical treatment of thewood does not affect the bond orcolor of the panel covering.

Masonry Walls

Do not apply Durasan panels overwet or damp masonry walls.Mildew or staining problems couldresult if the walls are not dry or willnot remain dry.

Trim Application

Plastic, wood or metal trim must beapplied at both floor and ceiling.

Trim should be applied carefully toDurasan panels to avoid creatingexcessive pressures which might latercause delamination of the covering.

Color Variation

Since manufacturers of the laminateused on Durasan panels finish to acommercial color match, minorcolor variations are possible. There-fore, care should be taken duringapplication to ensure that panelsapplied on single walls or visualareas are color matched to minimizeany such variations in the laminate.

Storage and HandlingDurasan panels are a prefinishedproduct, and as such, special careshould be taken during their storageand handling.

Durasan panels should be storedinside a warehouse or other suitablestructure where it will not beexposed to the weather or totemperatures exceeding 125˚ F.Durasan panels should never bestored outside. A firm, dry and levelfloor is recommended to ensurethat stacks of Durasan panels areevenly supported and away fromdampness. Durasan panels shouldnot be stored in areas of excessive

humidity or in heavy traffic areaswhere they may be damaged byfork trucks or other warehouseequipment.Avoid storing Durasanpanels at aisle corners wheneverpossible.

Units of Durasan panels should beproperly supported to minimizesagging and waviness.

Use extra care in the placement ofrisers (also known as dunnage orspacers). Vertical alignment of theserisers is critical to the proper storageof Durasan panels.The diagramsbelow indicate the correct andincorrect method of placing riserswhen storing Durasan panels.

Note that all risers are placed in proper vertical alignment so each tier is evenly supported.Arrows indicate pressure.

General InstallationINSTALLING DURASAN PANELS

Several methods of installationmay be used with Durasan prod-ucts in order to meet specific jobrequirements. As in regular drywallconstruction, ceilings are installedfirst, before Durasan paneling iserected. Panels are attachedvertically. Durasan should not beapplied to ceilings.

CUTTING DURASAN PANELS

Scoring and snapping is the easiestand fastest way to make straightcuts. To do this, merely score thepre-decorated surface with a sharpknife guided by a thin board with astraight edge. Then position thescored panel so the piece to beremoved is overhanging a straightedge parallel to the scored mark.Press this free end until the gypsumcore snaps. Cut the back paper toremove excess piece.

Sawing Durasan Panels iseasier than cutting lumber. For bestresults, keep the prefinished surfaceup and use a sharp, fine-tooth sawor appropriate router bit.

Note: Cut Durasan panels tolength, 1/4" shorter than ceilingheight so panels are not forcedinto place.

PANEL LAYOUT

Before application, proper arrange-ment of panels should be studied.For a most pleasing result, all jointsof panels should be centered onarchitectural features of the wall,such as fireplaces, windows, doors,etc. If the wall contains no suchopenings, arrange for the two endpanels to be of equal width. Narrowstrips are difficult to install andshould be avoided.Any special useof decorative trims and mouldingshould be considered at this time.

CORNER TREATMENT

Inside Corners:Where two wallsintersect to form an inside corner,the last panel installed at this inter-section should have two finishededges to create a professionallyinstalled look. See photographs,“Forming A Narrow PlankWith TwoFinished Edges,” for directions onfinishing an edge on the job. Thistreatment can be eliminated byusing Durasan Snap-On Interior Trim.

Outside Corners:Wood,plastic or metal corner mouldings,nailed or glued to wood or steelframing, are recommended foredge protection where panels meetto form outside corners. Thesemouldings can be stained orpainted either in matching orcontrasting colors, or use matchingDurasan Snap-On Cornerbead.

Curved Cuts can be made easilywith a keyhole saw. If an areamust be cut from the center of theboard, it is recommended that ahole be bored that will take thepoint of the saw.

Where Two Cuts Join, one cutmust be made with a saw, theother cut can be made by scoringand snapping. Cuts like this arerequired around door and windowopenings.

Electrical Outlet Box openingscan be made easily by cutting theDurasan as shown by the solidlines in the picture above. Strike asharp hammer blow to the “X”.Cut away back paper.

FORMING A NARROW PLANKWITH TWO FINISHED EDGES

1. Cut Decorative Surfacewith a sharp knife to a dimensionof 1" wider than the panel widthdesired. Then turn vinyl surfaceface down.

2. Score Back Surface withknife to the desired panel width.Snap gypsum core and peel this 1"piece from decorative surface.Smooth core if uneven.

3. Wrap the excess flap of vinylover the exposed gypsum core andstaple to back.

APPLICATION – ADHESIVEAPPLICATION – NAILING

Metal or wood studs must be dry, straightand spaced exactly 16" or 24" o.c.

Nailing or screwing is required only at topand bottom of prefinished gypsum panelswhen adhesive is applied and panels areprebowed to give pressure at the center ofthe board.

Four Optionsof InstallationOPTION 1NAILING RECOMMENDATIONS

A plastic-headed or paddedhammer is used when driving thenails to avoid chipping the surfaceof the color pin head.

Durasan panels are easy to nail.Panels are normally applied verti-cally to the framing with 1-3/8"matching colored nails (Color Pins)driven into the studs every 12"and spaced not less than 3/8"from panel edges.

When you plan to nail Durasanpanels in place, one of the threefollowing wood framing methodsis recommended. Select the onethat best suits your needs.

1. New Wall Construction. In newconstruction, wood studs shall bespaced exactly 16" or 24" o.c. Seedrawing below. Consider suggestionsunder “Panel Layout” before posi-tioning studs. Make sure studs aredry, straight and flush with top andbottom plates. Shim out or plane offthe studs, if necessary, to make themflush and in alignment.With studsspaced on 16" centers, one 48" widepanel will cover three stud spaces.

2. Modifying Existing Framing.If you wish to apply Durasan toareas where studs are already inplace but are warped, unevenlyspaced, or poorly aligned, employ1" x 3" wood furring strips horizon-tally nailed on 16" centers over theexisting framework. Shim out stripswhere necessary to form a solid,even nailing surface for panels.

3. Over Masonry of BrokenPlaster Surfaces.When applyingover brick, block or cement surfaces.2" x 2" wood furring strips arerequired. 1" x 3" furring strips maybe used on old plaster surfaces.Furring strips should be anchored tothe masonry walls using concretestub nails or any one of severalmasonry fasteners on the market.These furring strips may be appliedto the wall 16" o.c. horizontally,which is easier and preferred, orvertically, with additional horizontalstrips at the ceiling and floor lines.

If masonry walls are extremely roughor out of plumb, it is recommendedthat conventional framing beerected several inches away from,and parallel to, the existing wall.

OPTION 2ADHESIVE RECOMMENDATIONS

Durasan panels are quality wallpaneling products that can beapplied to wood studs, provided anappropriate drywall adhesivemeeting ASTM C 557 is applied tothe studs. Durasan panels can beadhesively applied to steel studs,provided an appropriate adhesiverecommended for use with vinylfaced gypsum board and steelstuds is used. Consult adhesivemanufacturer for a suitableadhesive product. Steps for thisapplication, which are limited towalls only, are as follows:

1. Durasan panels are appliedvertically to steel or wood studsor to furring strips that are straight,on one plane, and located 16" or24" o.c.

2. All panels must be“bowed,” or pre-curved thelength of the board, so that when

applied to the adhesive coatedstuds, a natural pressure will resultat the center of the panel whennailed or screwed top and bottom.(See “Bowing the Board”on page 9.)

3. Each stud that has twopanels meeting to form ajoint should have two beads ofadhesive, each one located as closeto each edge of the stud as possi-ble. This reduces the possibility ofadhesive oozing through the jointand getting on the prefinishedsurface. All other studs mustreceive a single bead of adhesive.Apply panels within 15 minutesof adhesive application.

4. When using adhesive, nailor screw the panel at the floor andceiling line, spacing fasteners 6"to 8" apart.

5. If cove moulding or base-boards are to be omitted,you may wish to attach each panelat top and bottomwith 1-3/8"matching Color Pins in place of1-1/4" wallboard nails when usingwood studs.

6. Immediately remove anyadhesive that may have beendeposited on tools or the prefinishedsurface.

OPTION 3LAMINATINGRECOMMENDATIONS

1. Apply to clean, dry, soundsurfaces only. Remove all wall-paper, high points, calcimine, loosepaint, and scratch any other paintfor good bond. Test any paintedsurface by laminating a small sam-ple. Allow to dry and check bond.

2. Bow the Durasan panels(see Bowing the Board) so thateach panel, when nailed at topand bottom, will have built-inpressure being exerted at thecenter of the board on the existingwall until the adhesive dries.

3. Apply the drywall adhesivewith a caulking gun to the backsurface of each panel, using 3/8"diameter beads 16" apart. Applybeads parallel to and 3/4" to 1"from each long edge of the panel.

4. Laminate with JointCompound. Durasan panels canbe laminated to existing surfaceswith Sta-Smooth or Ready MixJoint Compounds. Joint compoundis applied as nominal 5" ribbons orfour 1/4" x 1/4" beads locatedaround the perimeter and center ofthe panels. (approximate coveragefor Ready Mix is 9–10 gal./1000sq. ft. and Sta-Smooth is 50–60lbs./1000 sq.ft.) An alternative is2" diameter daubs 1/2" thick, 16"o.c. (approximate coverage forReady Mix is 5-1/2–6 gal./1000sq.ft. and Sta-Smooth is 30–35lbs./1000 sq.ft.).

5. Nail or screw panels at topfirst. Locate 6d nails or 1-7/8"drywall screws 6" to 8" apart.Press panels progressively fromceiling to floor line. Nail at floorline if necessary. If panels do notstay in proper alignment, addtemporary bracing for 24 hours.Use suitable moulding at floorand ceiling line to cover exposedfasteners.

BOWING THE BOARD(Required in Methods #2 and #3)

Durasan panels must be warpedor bowed to give pressure at thecenter of the board during adhesiveand cementing applications. If theboards were not bowed, temporarybracing would be required.Illustrated are two methods ofbowing. Be sure to removebundling tape from the boards. Cutto proper ceiling height, and stackas shown with all prefinished sur-faces facing up or down dependingon which method of bowing isused. Use padded blocks cut from2 x 4’s to protect prefinished sur-faces. Stack in such a manner that,when applying, each panel wouldhave a tendency to spring away atthe top when nailed at the bottom.Proper bowing can take from oneto several days depending onweather conditions.

OPTION 4EDGE GRIP CLIPRECOMMENDATIONS

Edge Grip Clips are the key to asimple concept for installing gypsumboard – plain or predecorated. It’scalled the Edge Grip Clip System. Itprovides mechanical attachment ofthe board over steel framing, woodframing, over steel or wood furringon concrete block, or any othersound and level wall surface. Theclip is positioned on the back ofthe board and tapped in place,using the installation tool, so theprongs are driven into the boardedges. The leading edge of eachclip along one edge of the boardis screw or nail attachedto the studs, furring or other wallsurface. The clips on succeedingpanels slip under the previouslyapplied panel causing the clips to

disappear behind the panels.Top and bottom edges must befastened to the framing, furring, orwall. The Edge Grip Clips hold theboard firmly in place.When using4'-wide panel, use adhesive alongintermediate studs.

In a battenless system, Durasanpanels must be absolutely flat toprevent lipping. Prebowingovernight with the vinyl surfaceconcave is recommended.

Steel Framing

Align floor and ceiling tracks orplates to ensure plumb partition,and secure with suitable fasteners24" o.c. max. Position studs orfurring 24" o.c. max. (30" o.c. for30" panels). Secure steel studslocated adjacent to door andwindow frames, intersections andcorners with 3/8" Type S PanHead or low-profile head screws.Application over steel furringrequires that the channels have aflat surface in contact with theboard (Screw Furring Channelhas beaded edges).

APPLICATION OF DURASAN

Apply the 1/2" or 5/8" Durasanvertically. Start at the end of a wallor partition intersection and cut thefirst panel if necessary so that itsleading, uncut edge (the directionin which work will progress) falls atthe center of a framing member.

CLIP INSTALLATIONINSTRUCTIONS

1. Place the clip into the slot of thetool, as shown on the drawing,making sure the back edges of theteeth are against the wood.

2. Position the clip and tool, asshown, against the back surface ofthe Durasan so that the clip is flatto the back, and perpendicular tothe edge of the Durasan.

3. Using a hammer, tap the end ofthe installation tool until bothteeth of the clip are fully insertedand the back legs are tight againstthe edge. Do not over drive theclips, as this can cause deformationof the board edge.

SNAP-ON TRIM

1.Apply Durasan and base trim innormal manner before installingoutside corner trim, then proceed-ing with any interior ceiling andcorner trim.

2. Cut steel retainers to fit outsidecorners, interior ceiling and cornertrim.

3. Nail or screw attach retainerstrip. Space fasteners 8" o.c. forinterior ceiling and corner retainers,

and 12" o.c. for outside cornerretainers. All retainers should beginfasteners 1/2" from each end.

4. Cut face cover to length with tinsnip or miter cut. After cuttingcover, restore flanges to originalconfiguration by using a screwdriverblade as a wedge. Snap cover overretainer by engaging one leg onretainer flange. Then use palm orthumb pressure until opposite legengages retainer flange and snapsinto place.

Apply clips to the leading edge ofthe panel 16" o.c., starting 16"down from the top. Clips on thetrailing edge of the next panel arealso spaced 16" o.c. but are about2" from those on the first panel’sleading edge. If greater rigidity isdesired, clip spacing may bereduced.All panels require clipsalong both edges except whenpanels abut doors, windows, inter-sections or corners, in which caseone edge of the panel will be directlyfastened with nails or screws.

Position the first panel, aligning theuncut edge at the center of theframing member, plumb, andattach it top and bottom as well asdirectly to the starting stud.Attachtop and bottom with fastener 1"from each panel edge and 12" o.c.between. Fasten clips to steel studswith screws provided, wood studswith 1" nails or 1-1/4" TypeWscrews through the hole in the clip.Do not fasten clips before securingtop and bottom of this first panel.

On all intermediate framing, apply1/4" diameter beads of drywalladhesive. In fixed wood or furredwall construction, adhesive must beapplied progressively with Durasanapplication. In a steel stud system,adhesive need not be applied untilthe opposite face of the partitionis finished. Intermediate studs arerotated back into position. Thisprocedure allows the intermediatestuds, which are joint studs on theopposite face, to be adjusted asnecessary when second side panelsare erected.

Apply base trim at bottom of parti-tion; install snap-on accessories atinside corners, outside corners, andwall-ceiling juncture if desired.

Note: Substrate must be straightand true. Durasan must be flat orprebowed.

EDGE GRIP CLIP SYSTEM

1. Edge Grip Clips are driven alongboth edges of the Durasan panelswith attention not to over drive orallow points to move up towardsvinyl surface.

2.With edge of panel centeredon stud face, clip is secured withstandard Type S Pan Head Screws.

3. Clips on adjoining panel slidebehind the first panel withoutscrews.

4. Edges butt snugly for fine linejoint.
