Happy Birthday AverilHappy Birthday AverilHappy Birthday AverilHappy Birthday Averil
Bradninch Guildhall was a very popular spot on the afternoon of the 11th December when Averil Snell celebrated her 90th birthday with family and friends.
There was a fabulous buffet, with pride of place go-ing to a beautiful birthday fruit cake, made by Averil's friend Pansy Parsons and decorated with 90 sugar roses by another friend, Sylvia Goff. Averil is pic-tured cutting the cake.
Averil is well known for her fund-raising for her fa-vourite charity, Cancer Research and she made good use of the opportunity to raise money for the Charity during the afternoon. Altogether, a very generous £300 was raised and a cheque for this amount has been sent to Cancer Research."

.SYRIAN REFUGEE
COLLECTIONS IN BRADNINCH
Saturday, Nov 19th saw the first collection of items to
take up to RAFT (Refugee Aid from Taunton) in Taunton. Our thanks to all who donated clothing, camping equipment, food, toiletries etc. and enabled us to completely fill a camper van with some bags left over to be stored until the next delivery to RAFT.
A special thank you to Dalzell Distributors who do-nated surplus stock from their clothing stores, which included over 250 pairs of men's socks, 200 pairs of men's trousers and a similar number of shirts and accessories
Nicola Evans and I then went off to Taunton to deliv-er the goods to RAFT. This is an impressive organi-sation staffed wholly by volunteers. We talked to the lead volunteer and got the following information which should prove helpful with future collections:
The method we used to sort everything donated to-day is helpful to RAFT. We sorted clothing into cate-gories and then used sticky labels on the bin bags e.g. Men’s trousers, Men’s jumpers, Women’s coats, Children’s’ clothing etc. They will sort them into sizes at RAFT. If we get a lot of children’s stuff they would prefer them separated them into Boys/Girls/Babies.
RAFT has two lorries going out per week (I think via an organisation in Birmingham) and they get the goods into Idlib and even into Aleppo by working with Islamic charities as well as into European camps. There is a lorry going out this afternoon (Nov 19
th)
taking the sleeping bags, camping equipment, blan-kets, baby buggies and food so we had delivered our goods in time to catch this.
Medicines: they accept the remains of people’s pre-scription drugs (apart from chemotherapy) so if any-one has any that they have stopped taking and are within the expiry date, RAFT will take them as well as over the counter medications. There also seemed to be a shortage of sanitary towels, adult inconti-nence pads, toiletries in general and first aid stuff.
We were amazed to hear that through RAFT’s con-tacts lorries have access into some of the most war torn parts of Syria. I had thought before we visited that the items would go to camps in Europe and

Egypt – especially to the Greek islands - but I hadn’t realised that they could get through to the people trapped in Idlib and Aleppo. This was especially heartening to hear. Anything unsuitable for Syria goes to other refugee camps e.g. Sudan or other charities so nothing is wasted, but Syrians seem to be prioritised.
We will have another three Saturday mornings when we collect items for refugee camps. They will be 10am-12noon in St Disen's Hall on January 14th, 21st and 28th. Items most wanted are warm clothes. sleeping bags and blankets and nappies, medical supplies, incontinence pads and sanitary towels. But all good quality donations are gratefully received and taken to Refugee Aid from Taunton [RAFT] from where they go to Syria, Greece and other areas of need.
Knit a Teddy Bear for Syrian Children
We will make February Teddy-knitting month. There is a knitting pattern (see below) that we will ask peo-ple to follow. RAFT put a knitted teddy in the pocket of children's coats when they send them to refugee camps.
We'd like to take RAFT as many knitted teddies as we can as a gesture of care from Bradninch. We would like to invite all groups in Bradninch who might be interested to get involved, and of course, all indi-viduals.
Fund-raising tea for RAFT On Sat Feb 11th we will have a fund-raising tea in the Baptist Church. We will also encourage people to come and knit while they enjoy their tea. We will send all money raised to RAFT: they need money for fuel for delivering items to camps and they are cur-rently spending money on nappies and other baby items for camps in Greece.
We will meet to plan our next activities on Wed 11 Jan at 7.30 in St Disen's Hall. Everyone is very wel-come.
Our thanks to everyone for their donations, transpor-tation and time spent sorting the donations. These donations make a difference to people’s lives.
Chrissie Mortimer & Anthea Duquemin.
Teddy Knitting Pattern
Yarn: Double knitting . Use small quantities of each for bear head, paws and feet; sweater, trousers and scarf. The brighter the colors, the livelier the bear will look. Using scraps, and left over or half skeins of materials are ideal for this project. Make them as colorful or as plain as you like – each bear you make will be one of a kind.
Needles: 8 or 9 inches long and the size you need to make the bear to the finished height. Stuffing: Use only new, clean polyester fiberfill for stuffing the bears. The knitting must be tight enough that the stuffing will not come through. Make a little swatch and check for closeness of stitches. Change needles if necessary.
FINISHED MEASUREMENTS: Height of finished
bear should be no larger than 25.5cm [10 inches] maximum.
Very important notes: Do not use buttons, pins or other loose material to make the face. Do not use foam rubber for stuffing, as the child may chew on it.
Instructions
The entire bear is made in garter stitch unless speci-fied otherwise. Work begins at the bottom of the feet on the front (or back) and proceeds upward, over the head and down the back (or front) to the bottom of the feet.
1st leg: With bear colour, cast on 10 stitches and work for 10 rows. Attach trouser colour and knit 30 rows. Put these stitches on a holder. 2nd leg: make as 1st leg; then knit across all 20 stitches for 16 rows for the pants. Attach sweater color and work for 16 rows. Attach bear color and work in stocking stitch for approx. 16-18 rows (head).
Continue down the back of the bear in reverse order, beginning with the sweater. With the right side of the stocking stitch out, fold the bear at the top of the head to form a front and back. Sew diagonals at the top of each side of the head to form ears – do not stuff. Embroider a “happy” face on side of the head making sure that teddy’s “smile” is above the tied scarf. Use embroidery thread or yarn for the face.
1st sleeve: With sweater color and right side of bear facing you, pick up and knit 8 stitches on front of the sweater from about midpoint to the shoulder, then pick up 8 stitches on the back (16 stitches). Work 20 rows in sweater color, then 10 rows in bear color.
Work 2nd sleeve as first, beginning at back. Scarf: With scarf color, cast on 75 stitches and knit 4 rows. Bind off.
Finishing Turn the bear inside out and sew it up, leaving a small opening at the crotch for stuffing. Use clean padding such as cotton batting to stuff teddy. Please use a generous amount of stuffing.
Draw a thread around the neck. Tie scarf around teddy’s neck and tack it to the back of the neck. We hope you enjoyed making a teddy; a little child is waiting for yours.

The Duchy Preschool and Playgroup had an excit-ing year in 2016, with a brilliant new Managing Supervisor, Bridget Cross, replacing another bril-liant and long serving one, Mary Richards. The new staff team continue to work very hard to maintain and improve on the service we provide for the children in their care. Our thanks to Mary for all her hard work over the years and also to Sarah Shaw, who recently left us after also provid-ing committed and high quality service over a long period of time.
The preschool is a registered charity and in 2016 we converted to a charitable incorporated organi-sation (CIO), which does not make any difference to the service we provide, but is more appropriate for a preschool run by local parents. The CIO pro-cess was long and time consuming and a huge word of thanks must go to Sera Byrne and the previous Board of Trustees for patiently and dili-gently bringing this about, with the able support of our trusted Business Manager Phil Whateley.
The school is run by a Board of Trustees compris-es – Andrew Boys, Sera Byrne, Simon Crawford, Madeleine Harvey-Howe, Lis Presland, Kirsty Simpson, Harriet Twiddle and Natasha Wills. We have decided not to elect a Chair as we are small and nimble enough to mobilise and support our staff together when they need us. But we are all committed to providing the young children of Bradninch and surrounds with a safe and exciting place to meet friends, play and learn and we are determined to maintain the high quality experience they and you deserve , despite some very serious financial challenges.
Play Pre-School Bonus Ball
Part of our fund raising for 2017 is the Bonus Ball Game. Just £1 a week will give you the chance to win a cash prize. Any individual over the age of 16 can purchase a number from 1 to 49 (subject to availability). 50p goes into a prize draw pot and 50p is donated to the preschool. Each week we use the drawn bonus ball number from Saturday’s National Lottery and the owner of that number re-ceives the prize draw pot. If a number is drawn which is not allocated, the prize draw pot rolls over to the following week.

Silverton Barber Shop Anniversary
On November 26th 2016 I celebrated Five years of trading at my shop in Fore Street, Silverton.
Previously I had worked at a Barber Shop in Tiverton and completed my City and Guilds in Barnstaple. After working at the Silverton Spar shop for 2 years I decided to take on Anne Vanneck's old Fruit and Vegetable shop 'Cabbages and Kings' and set up a Barber Shop of my own. The conversion was han-dled by my husband, Andy, his son Justin and my-self. Over the course of a couple of months we trans-formed the shop into my vision of a traditional Barber Shop.
One of the reasons that I chose to open a shop in Silverton was that during my time at the Spar shop I was impressed with how friendly the villagers are, most people seem to have the time to stop and chat and maybe share a joke or two. I'm so pleased that I took the leap of faith to set up my own shop because as I've built up my client base I've met some truly wonderful people.
To celebrate this landmark and as a thank-you to my customers old and new I've decided to give every-one the opportunity to enter a free raffle, the prize being Five free haircuts at Silverton Barber Shop. Everyone having a haircut in my shop until March 31st will be given a raffle ticket. The winner will be drawn in April.
Last year I started offering home visits on Wednes-day's, this has proved popular with clients who find it difficult to make it to the shop, just give me a call on 0796 8171851 to make an appointment.
However, in the shop, as always, no appointment is necessary, just sit and wait while you enjoy a compli-mentary Tea or Coffee.
Thanks everyone for their support and here's to the next five years!

A Note from Thailand
I was born and raised in Bradninch. I’ve just been looking at old photos on the web only to find a British Legion tea party taken late 1940, and there on the back row was MY MUM and in the front was ME. Now after the war very few people had transport but I have not found one mention of BRADNINCH COACH TOURS that kept most people mobile get-ting from A to B. They had contracts to take children to school in Cullompton and take then to the baths.
On Fridays, Exeter market day we would leave at 9am and get back at 4pm in time to collect the kids from school. Weekends they ran trips to the coast, took us to the away football games, private parties, and whatever.
There was a ‘go wrong’ trip - A trip to the seaside - we went to Dawlish Warren and spent a day playing in the sand, There was NO SEA! No! The local au-thority had not removed the barbed wire which pro-tected the country during the war, so we could not get to the sea. On a private day out for Bradninch Bell Ringers we chalked the front left wheel of the bus into thirty sec-tions and each chose a section. When it stopped at its’ destination whoever’s section was touching the road won the money. There were twenty nine seats plus one for the driver. We were off to the Lorna Doone Valley (I cannot remember who won the mon-ey) to meet the local vicar as we had permission to peel the church bells. We went into the local for a pre organised lunch, then we carried on ringing.
Now all this travel came in war time splendour, a coach with bull noise front, crash gearbox, and twen-ty nine wooden seats (bring your own comfort).
I was born in Chapel Street, which is now Millway.
Alan Bowden
Editor’s Note: Bradninch Life continues to be read far and wide, we have had contributions from America, Canada, Australia and now Thailand. The power of the internet is amazing.
By the way, Alan tells me it is 25oC in Thailand at the
moment.

Update from Devon County Councillor John Berry
As County Councillor my role is to represent you at Devon County Council, update you with decisions made and sit on County Committees, including Farms and Estates. I have dealt with a range of problems including School Transport appeals, but the most numerous concerns are related to highway issues.
Traffic is a major problem in towns and villages across Devon. Parking becomes more difficult and speeding is a huge concern. I am trying to get Devon County Council to install solar powered, flashing 30mph signs for Bradninch. If not, I may be able to allocate funds from the Locality Budget next May.
I managed to change Cullompton 'No Parking' in Fore Street to between 5pm – 8pm to help those returning through the Town after work. I have asked for the lights on M5 J28 to be re-calibrated to ease traffic flow. There are difficulties with lorries coming from the industrial estate, and tail backs at peak times. Following the Autumn Statement it is hoped that money may be released from the Govern-ment's infrastructure funds for the Cullompton Relief road, which added to money from developments and the LEP might move things forward.
In Bradninch, sadly the resurfacing of pavements and curbstones on Fore Street to Parsonage Street and part of Millway, were not allocated in this year's budget, but I have managed to get it set as a priority for next year's budget from May.
With help from Mort (Hen Street resident) last sum-mer I cleared the stream in Hen Street, which no longer gets cleared by DCC and took the rubbish home. I arranged for the Community Pay Back Team to clear this again plus the area around bus shelter.
Bradninch is well blessed with many successful clubs and groups which rely on many excellent vol-unteers who give their time, energy and money to make Bradninch a successful community. To you all my congratulations and huge thanks. It has been a pleasure to help many of these organisations with funding from my DCC Community Funding budget. In the last two years a total of £9,750 was granted to the following: Football Club, Cricket Club, Bowls Club, Youth Centre, Musical Gardens, Festival Choir, Arts Group. Baby and Toddler Group, Baptist Church, St. Disen's Church, Bradninch Rocks, Youth football, World War I Memorial Fund, Hele Society, Bradninch School, Bradninch Scouts, Bradninch Fireworks, Bradninch WI. I agreed Town and Parish (TAP) Fund monies (£1 DCC and 10p MDDC per person on the Electoral Roll) amounting to £4,604.
My congratulations to the Duchy School for their ex-cellent achievements recently! We are very fortu-nate to have such dedicated staff.
School Funding - Rural schools have received £270 – 300 per pulil less than those in urban areas. I

We have one basic aim – To provide the highest quality

All our staff are fully qualified AND they all hold a first aid

We have a lovely cosy baby room for just 9 under 2 year olds.
Pampers nappies, wipes, sun creams & all foods are included in our fees.
We only take 29 children per day so there is lots of one to one attention,
love & care! Funding is accepted for 2, 3 and 4 year olds—this can mean up to 15
hours of ‘free’ childcare per week!

am pleased that at last our campaign for fairer fund-ing for rural schools has been heard, but await the details.
Devon County Council are seeking Foster Par-ents to provide safe and secure places for chil-dren at risk. Sadly the incidence of child neglect and abuse is increasing in the County. If you think you could help please contact me or DCC direct.
Dementia Friends. Dementia is increasingly a problem for many people. I am interested in getting a group of people together with the aim of providing more information which could lead to Bradninch be-coming a Dementia Friendly town. Appropriate sup-port from family, friends and the community can do much to make life better for those with this disease and slow the progression of symptoms. Please let me know if you are interested.

JOIN THE MOB
Our group, known as the 'Movement Of Bikers' or 'MOB' for short, is a newly formed group of folk who are just itching for an excuse to get out and about on our bikes. Bikers of all ages and abilities are always welcome, none are turned away.
So would you like to join a small supportive group of friends in the Mid Devon community who share a common interest in motorbikes? We also have facili-ties, tools and space to enable you to perform basic maintenance on your bike to get it ready for the com-ing season. Help and advice is available.
Come and meet us, get together occasionally and go along with the ruse of finding the best venue for fish and chips, cream teas or ice creams, when really all we want is to enjoy the fellowship of other bikers and "Catch the breeze"
The activities are up to those in the group who are able to participate in the ride out on any particular day. For many, the weather plays a large part in the enjoyment of a ride out. Others in the group refuse to be held back by the elements and are keen to get out there and have fun. We all have pressures on our time and so ride outs can be arranged on the spur of the moment by sending out group texts and see who's up for it.
The Halberton Methodist Church, as part of their ministry to the local community host a monthly brunch and provide newspapers and companionship in the village hall. The expense is met by the church but donations can discreetly be left on the tables. All are welcome, including us MOB. The next brunch is on Sunday 29th January from 10 until 12. Just follow the smell of the bacon and coffee. You won't be able to miss it.
Trip to WW1 Passchendaele battle site in Belgium. The end of July 2017 will mark the 100 year anniver-sary of the final Battle of Passchendaele. My wife and I are planning a three or four night visit on our bike.
We know of a great camp site right at the heart of Ypres, so if you would enjoy such a trip then please put your hand up. Details should finalised by end of the year if possible or risk being disappointed if left any later. Oh, if you are thinking that you would like to go but that it's too far and would rather drive, well it looks like you are our support vehicle! I did say that none get turned away didn't I.
The MOB very much look forward to meeting YOU. Please make contact with me, James Hill on 07795154989 or email me at [email protected]

An Early Call for Musical Gardens
The annual Bradninch Musical Gardens weekend is both a wonderful showcase for the town and a fund-raiser for many causes, especially the Bradninch Music Festival.
Without the funds the weekend raises there would be no Festival and next year will be the 17
th Music Festi-
val, which is an amazing achievement for such a small community.
For those who do not know or are unsure – the weekend is not a RHS style gardens event but one when any garden, however large or small, opens its gates to visitors and wandering minstrels.
Over the years we have had small yards with 6 flow-er posts, small holdings, large verdant landscaped gardens and rough unkempt patches opening to much interest. People are attracted to the eclectic nature of the venues, the different music and the wonderful cakes and refreshments.
Would you like to open your garden or place of tranquil-
lity in 2017? The weekend is planned for 3rd & 4th June
2017.
If interested or need further information do please contact Mike Leonard on 881566 or [email protected]
