Layouts (A-Z order)

1 Beckton on Sea (00) Richard Pratt – Bilton Grange Model Railway Club, Harrogate

Welcome to Beckton-on-Sea! This OO gauge layout is set back in the final days of steam in the British Rail era and represents a small fictitious seaside resort between Whitby and Scarborough. Watch out for a variety of traffic on the line from local goods services to express fish and passenger services. Just off scene is a triangle that is used to turn loco’s when the turntable at Scarborough is out of action (This is our excuse for the odd visiting loco!) On the line here is a small good yard along with a small Loco shed and turntable. Locos and stock are mainly kit built as well as weathered ready to run. Please feel free to ask any questions.

2. Boggart's Leap OO9 (4mm=1ft NG) - Brian Howarth

This layout represents a railway built to give pleasure rides with stations at the garden centre and at the tearooms. www.marsdenrailway.brik.com

3 Bocstyn Sidings (00) Dave Burrows

A mini shunting layout based on an idea conceived in 1966 by the late John Allen of Monterey, California. John made a "switching game on a 56"x10" board. The object of the game was to move the goods wagons from there start position to a finish position in the least amount of time - hence his own name "Timesaver".Only one loco with five wagons and five sidings still provides the operator with 125 permutations.

17 Waterville and Caherdaniel (G 45mm NG) Paul Blackhouse 5m x 4m L end to end

The townships of Waterville and Caherdaniel really do exist in South West Eire but the preserved narrow gauge railway between them is entirely fictitious. Inspired by modern day preservation at the Irish West Clare (WCR) and Tralee abd Dingle (T&D) lines this layout was built a a spin off from our garden railway. It proudly claims the only surviving example of the centre cab F500 diesel locos built for the WCR by Walkers of Wigan in the early 1950's. These almost found there way to the Manx railway but the sale fell through. Motive power also includes a Hunslet 8T built for the T&D. Both these locos are manly hand built from aluminium with a few bought in components. The shock for the purists will be a Roundhouse Criccieth Castle on loan from the Ffestiniog railway to help with the daily roster. The L shaped end to end line has a station destination at each end with separation and illusions of distance between added by a tunnel. It uses a scale of 16mm to the foot or1:19.1. 45mm gauge 1 track is used to represent the Irish 3 foot narrow gauge. The locos are radio controlled on the 28Mhz and 2,4Mhz bands and powered from Lead acid batteries., there is no track power. Work in progress includes an extension module to increase platform length at Caherdaniel .

16 Wanfoot Quarry (OO30 15mm-ft) Dave Hewitt Keighley)

This Layout is a fictional Narrow gauge quarry line some ware in Britain. The line enters from under a footbridge, curves round between a quarryman's cottage and the loco shed, past the gatekeepers office into the reception loop. Tracks off the loop provide space, a head shunt and access to the loading shed. At the far end of the loop the track continues between the quarry buildings and disappears into the quarry workings off scene. Track is hand built using code 125 rail pinned to lolli stick sleepers. Buildings are scratch built along with the locos as is much of the rolling stock. Control is by DCC.Any questions please ask the operators.

4 Blackhawk House (0n30) Ian Drummond Scale 7mm/1ft Gauge 16.5mm

Blackhawk House was the Engine House (American term for engine shed) of the Gilpin Gold Tram, which served many of the mines of Gilpin County in Colorado , USA . This 2ft gauge line was constructed in several phases staring in 1887, and eventually the line was some twenty six miles long. It twisted and climbed all over Gilpin County with steep gradients, in places at least 1 in 20, and sharp curves, the tightest of which was reputed to have been 50ft radius on the main line. Sadly thought the line was relatively short lived, closing in 1917. The story of the line was related in the March/April 2006 edition of the magazine "Narrow Gauge World".The model supposes that in fact the line survived longer, being purchased by a large mining company, which brought in some additional motive power to supplement the line's original Shay geared locomotives. At the centre of the layout is Blackhawk House which was in fact a converted barn, and serves as the main engineering facility on the line. The main line climbs and curves round the Engine House on a series of wooden trestles. These were so close to the Engine House that when the line acquired larger locomotives, part of the roof of the barn had to be cut away to allow the engines to pass. To the front of the layout there is a line leading away to the warming house. In winter trains of gold ore were placed in the warming house overnight, in order to thaw out, the low temperatures often completely freezing the ore inside the hopper wagons. The line now operates a range of locomotives including Shays and Climax's, as well as a couple of early railtrucks. Operation of the layout is by a DCC system which allows for individual sound for each locomotive. Currently the layout is still very much a work in progress, and is exhibited to demonstrate some of the variety of modelling techniques, many of which are American practice.

5 Dalry Road (0) Ian Atkinson BMRC

A Scottish layout based in the green diesel era, the chosen period of 1965 to 1970 is a rarely modelled era, which is a great pity as it was one of the most colourful. If you were that way inclined, you could run steam locos alongside diesels in green with either small or large warning panels (or none at all) and rail blue. Coaches could be a mixture of maroon or regional liveried mk1s and even blue and grey. Wagons were a real mismatch of grey, bauxite and It is private owner liveries together with the white or blue of insulated stock. hoped that Dalry Road. captures some of the essence of this although only open to freight and parcel traffic only.

6. Oxenhope (0) BMRC 30ft x 3ft end to endOxenhope is the first O gauge layout of the Bradford Model Railway Club. and is the terminus station of the Keighley and Worth Valley Railway, loosely as it was between 1945 and 1965. This permits the running of both L.M.S. and B.R. stock . It consists of a single platform with run-round loop and goods facilities. As a point of interest, when the branch was constructed to double track standards to allow a never built extension via a long tunnel to Hebden Bridge. The layout is constructed of six screwed and glued 12mm plywood baseboards measuring 4' x 3', making a total length of 38', which is the maximum that will fit in the clubroom Peco track and points are used with slow-motion Tortoise point motors and magnetically operated Dingham Uncouplers. Scenery is mainly woodland scenics.Stock belongs to various members and includes of Bachman, Tower; Oakville-Anchorage; Ace, Connoisseur, DJH, Kirk, Sidelines, Slater's, Peco, and some scratch built,

14 Victoria Road OO; Bradford Model Railway Club,

Victoria Rd. is based on the ex Midland line north of Shipley heading towards the famous Settle & Carlisle. Many of the buildings and scenery are modelled on those at Saltaire but because of the constraints of size we have named it after the road on the bridge adjacent to the station. Local people will no doubt recognise many of the features and hopefully get the atmosphere of the area. The period modelled was intended to be in the 1960s however Victoria Road can be caught up in a time warp where the stock can appear from other periods which allows club members to run whatever they prefer.

15 Waitawyhle (N) Graham Smith

Waitawyhle is a fictitious area based on the Settle and Carlisle route over the Pennines and is aimed at showing the wild and scenic side of the line when the railway had to blend into the landscape. The refuge siding is loosely based on Blea moor sidings and the viaduct is inspired from Dandy Mire, Moorcock or Garsdale Haed Viaduct (it has known by all). The refuge siding allows for some prototype operating where trains would stop for water or build up a head of steam to continue the struggle over the "Long Drag" or maybe allow an express to pass. One of the aims is to show how a layout can be built using mainly commercial items with some minor modifications. If you do not recognise any items please ask. Buildings are based on typical S and C structures. The principle adopted is to run trains through the scenery in a portrayal of the line in the 50's when under the control of BR LM region. It was a time of mainly steam but with a few diesels too.The main difference to the prototype and the model is the much greater frequency of trains than you would see on a normal day. Usually you would see a train go through and then nothing for the next hour or so unless the line was being used for diversions. Should you wish to ask any questions please do so and we will try and give you the answer

7. Pencombe (0) - David Gray Pencombe is an Ex-GWR branchline layout with a difference. – it’s 1970 and there’s only diesel power to be seen. The layout has been built to show the now long departed diesel hydraulic locomotives in service at the time, Many of the models are equipped with authentic sounds to enhance the experience

8. Pen-Y-Bont (0-16.5 NG 7mm = 1ft) Geoff Lord and Matt Hainsworth Heywood MRC http://hmrg.co.uk

A freelance layout based on the narrow gauge lines of North Wales. Locomotives/ Rolling Stock are kit built from various manufacturers with some scratch built. Kadee couplings are used throughout with uncoupling by means of magnets under the track. Buildings are scratch built using foam board and Slaters embossed plasticard of various types. If you have any Questions please ask the operators.

9 Ridings Huddersfield Trolleybuses (00) Bruce Lake

Ridings is a 4mm scale layout depicting the Ridings of Yorkshire sometime in the 60's. Largely fictional it does incorporate scenes from the ridings, and around Huddersfield in particular. The railway operates a number of steam locomotives, but the era is such that green diesels and dmu's were becoming more widespread. At the same time, line closures and cutbacks were coming common and this is evident around Ridings station (which incidentally, is based on Armley). Also in decline were the canals, and Ridings incorporates a largely abandoned narrow canal which disappears into a tunnel as at Standedge. It was an era of change in all parts, and a modems office block and some new flats have already appeared replacing some fine old buildings whose passing |will be regretted in years to come. The grand Town Hall (based on Bradford, with the old Town Hall Square roundabout in front of it) has so far survived, and if it lasts another ten years it will probably make it into the 21st century. However. the main motivation for the layout was to operate model trolleybuses. These are based on Huddersfield's system, and are powered from the overhead, just as the real thing. The 1950:s were the heyday of Trolleybuses, and they were already in decline in the 1960's, much as the railways were. Whilst the railway is sill DC operated, the trolleys system is DCC which eliminates sectioning. Complementing the Trolleybuses are several motorbuses which as now guided using the Faller system, after earlier attempts to manufacture home-made steering units. The section on the right which features the canal, is relatively new and so the overhead line engineers have not had time to construct the trolleybus overhead wires yet. They are planning to do this in time and the circuit will then be considerably extended and the fleet can be enlarged. At the layout is beased on a busy town there are still many buildings to construct. Hopefully the layout will provide a visualisation of the scene in a typical; Yorkshire Town in he middle of the last century. For further information including lots of photos f the construction and some vids visit www.model.trolleybus.org.uk and http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KBHT-7TOO1M

13 ValleyFields (LNWR perios EM gauge) Tony Gee

Some 25years ago we first exhibited a layout called Valleyfields. It has been in store for much of that time. When we wanted a small LNWR terminus as part of our bigger layout we retrieved it from the attic and dusted it off.Hopefully we have learned a bit in the intervening years so although we liked the concept, we decided that there would be much we would do differently. So we pinched some of the best ideas, kept a few of the original buildings and the rest is new from kits or from scratch. Work is underway to incorporate Valleyfields as part of our larger layout. You can visit our website for more details of the project at http://www.narrowroadlayout.co.uk/We hope that Valleyfields represents a little bit of rural Britain as it looked in the early 1920's when railways were still the most important mode of transport.

During the second world war around the time of the Normandy landings, Rowlands Castle (Southern Railway) was used as a detraining station for troops and equipment. The model depicts the country station, yard, village green and buildings, and adjacent forestry areas as would have been during 1944.Trains include local stopping and semi fast Waterloo-Portsmouth first generation EMU services, general government pooled goods and troop trains. All is based on written and first hand reported accounts.Debut was at the Hull Model Railway Show in November 2008.goods see www.rowlandscastlemodelrailway.com,
