Research in Practice – online resources for foster carers

For almost 20 years, Research in Practice has supported Children’s Services’

workers in their efforts to improve the lives of children and families. RiP aims to

make research and evidence accessible and easy to apply, to enable safer decision-

making and robust child-centred practice.

As a foster carer, the support and nurturing you give to children is invaluable. RiP

understands that your role is both challenging and rewarding so keeping up-to-date

with shifting policy and practices, understanding research, gaining insights into what

is working well and what’s not, can be extremely time-consuming and often daunting.

Research in Practice can support you with this.

As a foster carer working with Bradford Council, you can gain access to the

Research in Practice website.

Resources

You can download any RiP resources at no cost. All their publications and tools are

jargon-free and give practical examples of how to apply research messages to

practice.

In particular, you may be interested in the Frontline briefings and tools. These

provide a concise and practical summary of research and theory with pointers for

action.

Topics include:

Communicating with children under 5

Attachment in children and young people

Promoting resilience in children, young people and families

Child development

Each briefing has an accompanying tool which condenses some of the key

information.

Once you are logged on, you can access resources from here: https://www.rip.

org.uk/resources/publications/frontline-resources/

How do you sign up?

If you want to access these resources, please contact Helen Picton

([email protected]) with your name and email address to be sent

instructions of how to create your account.

You may also want to sign up to receive RiP’s monthly e-bulletin. This is a useful

way of keeping informed of Research in Practice’s latest resources, events and news

from across the sector.

a host of training resources and materials targeted at people working in fostering and

IMPORTANT!!

Do we have your correct

contact details?

Do you receive texts from

the fostering service?

Fostering have a text alert service so we can send

out messages to all carers about events,

emergencies or training courses. However in order

to receive these messages, we need to have a

mobile phone number for you and for this to be

listed as your main contact number.

At the moment, we are only able to contact around

a third of carers in this way.

If you don’t currently receive texts from us, please

ask your worker to check that they have your

correct mobile, that this is your main number and

that it is on the system used by the

communications team.

Men in Foster Care

Training & Support Group Session for Male

Carers

An evening session for male carers to network and discuss issues specific to men in the fostering role. For many children in care living with a male foster carer will be their first positive experience of an adult male, giving them the chance to explore the formation of trusting relationships and having contact with men who understand their needs. Despite the importance of this role, male carers often feel undervalued and overlooked. This session will consider how we provide good quality support & training to male carers whilst ensuring that we manage risks in a proportionate way. If those attending find this session useful, we can continue the

group as a quarterly support group. Other times and venues

can be suggested.

Date: Tuesday 1 October

Time: 6.30pm to 8.30pm

Venue: Margaret McMillan Tower
