It is with enormous pleasure that we present the programme for 2014; the result of countless hours liaising with musicians and their agents, and listening to and watching as many prospective artists as possible either in live performances or on You Tube! This year's Festival promises to be very special with international vocalists and instrumentalists, two Classic Brit Award winners, two BBC Young Musicians of the Year, one of the country's leading string quartets, two premier brass ensembles, an international vocal group and , for the first time at Bradfield, a classical accordionist. To round off the week we have an array of Yorkshire based musicians and singers to present "Vive la France!", a tour of French music and song and our tribute to the "Tour de France" visiting Bradfield the week aer the Festival. We continue to support the Sheffield Music Service and on Monday evening we include recitals from Hannah Blumsohn and Clare Rees-Zimmerman, this year's Young Musician Award Winners.

Despite ever-increasing costs we continue to price tickets on a "not-for-profit" basis thanks to the tremendous support we receive from our sponsors, patrons and friends. The Festival does not belong to any individual or group; it belongs to the community. If you feel you would like to be involved and make a contribution in any way whatsoever, please get in touch with us. There are a multitude of tasks to be performed in order to deliver a successful festival and administrative help as well as muscle power will be welcome. We are always on the lookout for new sponsors and advertisers, their contributions ensuring admission charges are kept to a minimum and a quality festival is presented to the public.

The Festival Commiee is pleased to announce the line up of artistes for 2015. The Festival runs from 20th June - 27th June.

Onyx Brass, described by BBC Music magazine as "the classiest brass ensemble in Great Britain", are newcomers to the Festival and lovers of brass music of every genre are in for a treat.

2012 performers 4 Girls 4 Harps return by popular demand, appearing once again with local soprano, Ella Taylor, the 2010 winner of the coveted title of BBC Chorister of the Year.

Jennifer Pike is firmly established amongst the finest violinists of her generation. In 2002, aged 12, she became the youngest winner of the BBC Young Musician of the Year, and the youngest major prize-winner in the Menuhin International Violin Competition.

Amy Dickson became the first saxophonist to win the 2013 MasterCard Breakthrough Artist of the Year Classic Brit Award. Amy will appear with Romanian born pianist, Rebeca Omodia, winner of many prizes in national and international piano competitions. Rebeca started working as a duo partner with Julian Lloyd Webber until his recent retirement due to health reasons.

Since its formation in 1972 the Brodsky Quartet has performed over 2000 concerts on the major stages of the world and released more than 50 recordings. This ensemble is at the very forefront of the international chamber music scene.

"Viennese Fever" is directed by, and features, violinist, fiddler and composer Adam Summerhayes with his 9-piece ensemble. They will perform pieces by Johan Strauss, Lehar and ever popular gems by the legendary Viennese violinist Fritz Kreisler.

We round off the week with the World Champion Cantamus Girls Choir. If you missed this choral extravaganza in 2013, be sure to come along in 2015.

BA Message from the

Festival President

Welcome back to another fantastic celebration of music

in beautiful Bradfield! Looking at this year’s programme

I honestly feel that it is possibly the best one yet.

Some of you may know that I am unable to continue

playing for medical reasons but I am so happy to see Laura

van der Heijden at Bradfield – the future of the cello is safe

in her hands.

And, whatever you do don’t miss the opening concert

featuring two of the finest young talents you will hear

anywhere in the world. All the concerts are rich and varied

and, together they cover a very wide spectrum of music.

I am certain that you will enjoy a week of wonderful music

making in a marvellous setting.

All the very best

MILOŠ with Ksenija Sidorova (accordion)

One of the hoest properties in classical music, Miloš came to

international aention in 2011 with his debut album The

Guitar (Mediterráneo) which, in the space of just a few

months, topped classical charts around the world, became an

internationally best selling sensation and earned Miloš

Gramophone's prestigious Young Artist of the Year Award.

As an exclusive Deutsche Grammophon recording artist, Miloš

Karadaglic ́ released his second album Latino (Pasión) in 2012

and went on to receive both Classic Brit (UK) and Echo Klassik

(Germany) awards.

Miloš' passion for the guitar is matched with an intuitive sense

of how to bring the instrument across to his public – whether it

be for an audience of 3000 in the Royal Albert Hall or an

intimate chamber music performance for 100 people. He enjoys

performing in the major concert halls as much as in non

traditional venues such as New York's Le Poisson Rouge,

London's Camden Roundhouse (iTunes Festival) and Deutsche

Grammophon's Yellow Lounge club nights in London, Berlin,

Amsterdam, Madrid, New York and Seoul. The 2013 - 2014

season has taken Miloš to new heights, with extensive tours

throughout Europe, America and the Middle East, in recitals

and concert performances, as well as appearances at prestigious

festivals such as Cheltenham (UK) , Ravinia (USA), Gstaad

(Switzerland), Rheingau and Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

(Germany).

Born in Montenegro in 1983, Miloš Karadaglic ́ first started

playing the guitar at the age of 8. When he was 17 he

successfully applied for a scholarship to study at the Royal

Academy of Music and moved to London where he continues

to live while keeping close ties with his family and homeland.

Miloš is a passionate supporter of music education and acts as a

Patron of the Mayor of London Fund for Young Musicians and

the charity Awards for Young Musicians.

He uses D'Addario J 46 strings and plays a 2007 Greg Smallman

guitar, kindly lent to him by Paul and Jenny Gillham.

Tonight he is joined by Ksenija Sidorova the accomplished

classical accordian player with whom he has collaborated and

performed with in recent times.

Born in Latvia in 1988 Ksenija Sidorova was encouraged

to take up the accordion by her grandmother, who has roots in

the folk tradition of accordion playing. Ksenija started to play

the instrument aged eight in her home town of Riga, under the

guidance of Marija Gasele. Wanting more exposure to both

classical and contemporary repertoire and also more concert

opportunities, her studies took her to London where she was a

prize-winning undergraduate and subsequently received a

Masters Degree with Distinction at the Royal Academy of

Music, where she studied with Professor Owen Murray.

Outside the RAM her awards included a Philharmonia

Orchestra Martin Musical Scholarship Fund Award and

Philharmonia Orchestra Friends Award.

In 2009 Ksenija was a joint winner of “Friends of the Royal

Academy of Music Wigmore Award”. The same year she was

also made a Recommended Artist under Making Music's Philip

& Dorothy Green Award scheme. She was also selected to

appear in Park Lane Group Young Artists New Year Series,

2009, and was described by The Times as “one of the real finds

of the series”. She is also a recipient of the Worshipful

Company of Musicians Silver Medal, Maisie Lewis Award and

was the first accordionist to win the prestigious WCoM Princes

Prize. In 2012 Ksenija became the first International Award

winner of the Bryn Terfel Foundation.

Bradfield Festival of Music Young Musician AwardsIn 2003 the Festival established a link with Sheffield Music Service so that Bradfield would be a platform for local young musicians to perform and be part of this community based festival. In 2007 it was agreed that the Festival would make annual awards to the two most promising young musicians from the Sheffield Music Service. This award comprises a cheque for £100 and a signed certificate from Julian Lloyd Webber, our President. This year's award winners will each give a short recital during the first half of tonight's concert.

Fine Arts Brass Classical Brass Quintet

Fine Arts Brass is now in its thirtieth year and firmly

established at the forefront of the international brass chamber

music scene.

Originally formed in 1980, the ensemble took the name of the

place of its first rehearsal, The Barber Institute of Fine Arts at

Birmingham University. The group's enduring success is due to

its uncanny chameleon-like adaptability to different audience

requirements. These can range from educational concerts for

primary school children to broadcasts suitable for BBC Radios 2,

3 or 4. With the combination of their unique versatility of sound,

eminent humour and passion for the music they play, it is easy

to see why they have toured to over 60 countries and performed

in just about every music festival in the UK.

Their repertoire is as comprehensive as you would expect from

such artists, encapsulating all musical genres from the

Renaissance and Baroque to the sound worlds of the avant

garde. Equally, when they play Swing, they swing! They also

have a penchant for commissioning new works (over 50 to date)

and have enjoyed working closely with the composers who have

wrien for them: Malcolm Arnold, Robin Holloway, Michael

Nyman, John Woolrich & Michael Torke to name but a few.

More info at: www.fineartsbrass.co.uk

Simon Lenton (trumpet) Simon won a scholarship to

study trumpet at Trinity College of Music in 1988 with Iaan

Wilson and Philip Jones. Since graduating in 1991 he has

freelanced across the spectrum of professional music making in

the UK and abroad as a performer/soloist, conductor, arranger,

composer and adjudicator.

Angela Whelan (trumpet) studied the trumpet at the

Royal Scoish Academy of Music and Drama. In 1995, she

became the first female brass player in twenty years to win the

coveted gold medal for the Shell/LSO Music Scholarship. She

followed this, in 1996 - the year of her graduation from the

RSAMD - by taking first prize in the 1996 International Brass

Explosion Trumpet Competition. As a soloist she has played

concertos with many of the UK's leading orchestras.

Chris Parkes (horn) began his studies at Chetham's

School of Music, before aending the Guildhall School of Music

and Drama. Chris was the UK winner of the 1998 Paxman

International Horn Competition and reached the brass final of

the televised BBC Young Musician's 2000 Competition. Chris has

played with the London Philharmonic Orchestra, The Royal

Philharmonic Orchestra as Principal Horn and currently

Principal horn with the Swedish National Radio Orchestra.

Katy Jones (trombone) started playing the trombone

aged 6 at Kirkby Lonsdale Brass Band and went to Chethams

School of Music at 13. Aer studying Pharmacy at Manchester

University, Katy joined the BBC National Orchestra of Wales on

second trombone. She joined Fine Arts Brass in 2004 and

returned to the freelance world of music making. She has played

with the Symphony Orchestra as joint Principal Trombone and is

now Principal Trombone with The Hallé Orchestra.

Les Neish (tuba) is one of the leading tuba players of his

generation. He has gained recognition as a soloist, chamber

musician and educator throughout the world. Career highlights

include a performance at Millennium Park, Chicago and

recording on an album with pop star “Sting”.

peers. Since 2008 Laura has been a student of the renowned

British-Russian cellist Leonid Gorokhov. They perform together

in the UK and in Germany.

In 2010 she won “Erster Preis mit Auszeichnung” (full marks)

recitals with Huw Watkins, Alison Rhind and Mana Oguchi.

Laura lives in Sussex where she visits her local secondary school

(Sackville in East Grinstead) and enjoys as much of a teenage

social life as her commitment to music allows for.

She plays a 1935 cello by Galileo Arcellaschi.

More info at: www.lauravanderheijden.org

Accompanying Laura will be composer and pianist Huw Watkins.

Huw is in great demand with orchestras and festivals including

Benjamin Grosvenor and The Endellion String Quartet

British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor is internationally

recognized for his electrifying performances and penetrating

interpretations. An exquisite technique and ingenious flair for

tonal colour are the hallmarks which make Benjamin

Grosvenor one of the most sought-aer young pianists in the

world. His virtuosic command over the most strenuous

technical complexities never compromises the formidable

depth and intelligence of his interpretations.

Benjamin first came to prominence as the outstanding winner of

the Keyboard Final of the 2004 BBC Young Musician Competition

at the age of eleven. Since then, he has become an internationally

regarded pianist performing with orchestras including the

London Philharmonic, RAI Torino, New York Philharmonic,

Philharmonia, Tokyo Symphony, and in venues such as the Royal

Festival Hall, Barbican Centre, Singapore’s Victoria Hall, The

Frick Collection and Carnegie Hall (at the age of thirteen).

Benjamin has worked with numerous esteemed conductors

including Vladimir Ashkenazy, Jiří Bělohlávek, Semyon Bychkov,

Andrey Boreyko and Vladimir Jurowski. At just nineteen,

Benjamin performed with the BBC Symphony Orchestra on the

First Night of the 2011 BBC Proms to a sold-out Royal Albert

Hall. Benjamin returned to the BBC Proms in 2012, performing

with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Charles Dutoit.

During his brief, but sensational career to date, Benjamin has

received Gramophone’s ‘Young Artist of the Year’ and

‘Instrumental Award’, a Classic Brits ‘Critics’ Award’, UK ‘Critics’

Circle Award’ for Exceptional Young Talent and a Diapason d’Or

‘Jeune Talent’ Award.

Benjamin continues to incorporate chamber music collaborations

into his schedule, including collaborations with the Escher String

Quartet and Elias Quartet, as well as a performance at the Queen

Elizabeth Hall’s International Chamber Music Series with the

Endellion String Quartet with whom Benjamin performs tonight

at the Bradfield Festival of Music.

The Endellion String Quartet is renowned as one of

the finest quartets in the world. Over the years, its schedule has

included regular tours of North and South America and concerts

in Australasia, the Far East, the Middle East, South Africa and

every West European country. Everywhere, the Endellion String

Quartet 'sets the audience ablaze' (Daily Telegraph) and

'captivates concertgoers with a remarkable rapport, playing to

each other with a sense almost of discovery, communicating to

the audience on a level of unusual intimacy' (Guardian).

In Britain, the Endellion String Quartet has appeared at nearly all

of the major series and festivals and has broadcast many times on

BBC radio and television; it has appeared at the Proms and it has

been featured in the week-long programmes 'Artist of the Week'

and 'Artists in Focus'. Its presence in London has been marked by

several series both at the Southbank Centre and Wigmore Hall,

where the Quartet members were Artistic Directors of several

'Quartet Plus' series.

They have worked with guest artists including members of the

former Amadeus Quartet, Sir Thomas Allen, Joshua Bell, Michael

Collins, Steven Isserlis, Mitsuko Uchida and Tabea Zimmermann.

In 1996 the quartet were winners of the Royal Philharmonic

Society Award for Best Chamber Ensemble.

The New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians (2000)

concludes that "The Endellion is arguably the finest quartet in

Britain, playing with poise, true intonation, excellent balance and

a beautiful tone. In music of the Viennese Classical composers it

has few challengers but it has won praise in a wide repertory, its

Beethoven and Bartók cycles being especially admired.”
