Rahman, the No. 2 seed, defeated Team Malaysia teammate Sin Li Jane, 221- 170, to become the first Malaysian player to win on the PWBA Tour. The step- ladder finals aired national- ly on CBS Sports Network. Rahman built an ear- ly 31-pin lead after Sin opened the match with three consecutive splits, and strikes in frames four and five for Rahman all but locked up the victory. The 26-year-old right- hander remained clean throughout the game en route to her first PWBA title. Along with earning the championship, Rahman also captured a spot in the season-ending Smithfield PWBA Tour Championship to be held at Richmond International Raceway in Richmond, Virginia. Who advanced to meet Sin was decided by a one- ball roll-off. As the higher seed, Rahman had choice of starting order and lane and chose to start the on the left lane. She left the 6 and 10 pins on her first offer- ing, but Franco failed to top that, leaving the 1-2-4 com- bination. Rahman won the roll-off by a score of 8-7. “I didn’t expect to ad- vance to the next round,” Rahman said. “I threw an eight-count, and I was ex- pecting her to roll some- thing higher than me. When she didn’t, I was really shocked. I was surprised and didn’t know what to do.” Franco advanced to the semifinal match by de- feating two-time reigning PWBA Player of the Year Liz Johnson, 172-154. LAS VEGAS – Aus-tralia’s Jason Belmonte, a three-time PBA Player of the Year and USBC’s only four-time Masters cham-pion, joined a significant group of PBA Tour champi-ons who got an opportunity to bowl in the USBC Open Championships this year at South Point Bowling Plaza in Las Vegas, thanks to a change in USBC Open el-igibility rules.

Having never bowled in the USBC Open Champi-onships, and really having limited knowledge about how the event works, “Bel-mo” got an unusual, but very warm, introduction to the event on Wednesday.

According to USBC personnel, it happened like this:

Anyone Need A Sub? Jason Belmonte Makes USBC Open Championships Debut

Belmonte, who hadn’t made plans to bowl in the tournament, was still in the U.S. after bowling in the Grand Casino Hotel & Re-sort PBA Oklahoma Open, so he made a stop in Las Ve-gas and decided to put his name on the “sub board,” offering to fill in if a team needed a last-minute bowl-er. SHAWNEE, Okla. – There was some strange action at this month’s Professional Bowlers Assn. Oklahoma Open. And none was stranger than a match in the championship stepladder finals between Rhino Page and Chris Barnes.

Now, Page and Barnes are two PBA stalwarts so one could expect pretty clear sailing and an exciting slugfest. The veteran Barnes is an 18-time PBA Tour winner; Page is a four-time PBA Tour champion.

Barnes , t he four th qualifier, scored a one-sided 190-149 victory over Jesper Svensson to earn a shot at Page, the third qualifier.

Looking back, there was foreshadowing that some spookiness might lie ahead.

First, Svensson rattled off three straight stepladder wins before his match with Barnes – yet he bowled erratically. Twice the left-handed Svensson misfired trying to nail the 7-pin on a spare attempt. Only his grittiness carried him to the championship stepladder round.

Svensson’s game really came undone against Barnes on the 32-foot Wolf oil-lane pattern and Barnes and Page demonstrated some bizarre bowling of their own in the following match.

Page was interviewed before his match with Barnes and it was suggested by one broadcaster that he seemed nervous. It probably figured; Page was winless in the last seven games he bowled on TV and this tournament’s eight stepladder matches were being broadcast on ESPN. Further, Page hadn’t won a PBA singles title since 2009.

The result was that Barnes defeated Page, 206-185, to earn a meeting with second qualifier Jason Belmonte. But that routine score camouflaged the fact that the left-handed Page threw a gutter ball on his first shot in the fourth frame. And Page repeated the trick in the seventh frame – both times sliding the ball in the left gutter. Two gutters in four frames! That’s definitely pretty weird.

Not to be outdone, the right-handed Barnes also had a couple of moments of misery. Barnes flat-out missed a 10 pin on a spare shot in the fifth frame – providing some life for Page. Then Barnes threw his own gutter ball on his first shot in the 10th frame. For whatever it’s worth, Barnes’ gutter ball didn’t matter much. Barnes had pretty much won the match by then. Still, three gutters in one game by two top pros caused quite a stir and plenty of raised eyebrows.

What bowlers can learn from all those gutter balls: Even the best of pros can perform like duffers at times. It doesn’t happen often, but it does happen, especially on challenging oil patterns. The sight of these top pros coming unglued should serve as consolation for those non-pros who occasionally throw a stinker of a shot. Those things

happen. It even happens to the pros. Don’t sweat it. It likely will happen again.Pros being pros, Page and Barnes showed the mettle of a champion during their match. Rattled by his first gutter,

Page then threw another horrible shot, leaving four pins. But Page responded well to his next gutter. He calmly and determinedly knocked down all the pins on his second shot in the seventh frame to record a spare. He then rolled strikes in the eighth and ninth frames to keep his hopes for victory flickering. Barnes responded even better to adversity. After missing his 10 pin, Barnes rattled off a four-bagger from the sixth to the ninth frames to pretty much seal the victory.

After his gutter in the 10th, Barnes needed five pins to sew up the match. He struck. Then he struck on his final shot. Definitely a crazy match.

What bowlers can learn from how Page and Barnes responded to adversity: Top bowlers know how to bounce back. They shake off the bad shots and don’t let them keep them down. They laugh off their mistakes and renew their focus. It works!

Postscript: Barnes went on to win his third straight match with a 256-218 victory over Belmonte before dropping a 194-188 nail-biter to Marshall Kent in the championship match.

2 Takeaways From This Wacky Match in the Oklahoma Open

by Fred Eisenhammer

It was a wacky match, but Chris Barnes prevailed against Rhino Page in the Oklahoma Open despite encountering some adversity. He went on play in the championship match where he lost a heart-breaker to Marshall Kent.

Left-hander Rhino Page found some tough going in his stepladder match against Chris Barnes in the Oklahoma Open. Twice, Page rolled a gutter ball on his first shot.

Bowlers: This is a time-sensitive story – meaning please read right away. One never knows when time will expire on its message.

So, it’s been a year since I wrote three stories about my travails in purchasing a wristwatch.

I talked about all the frustration that I felt after buying a number of watches – and discarding them – over a three-year period.

They were either falling apart – or had already fallen apart.

And these watches weren’t cheapos. I got four from Costco and one from T.J. Maxx and their price ranged from $70 to $130.

But these watches didn’t last.I kept returning them and wondering where I should

look next.I finally found a watch of my dreams while looking

for groceries at a Target store and stumbling onto a watch display. There was a glistening no-name brand that seemed to call my name for the princely sum of $10.99. What’s more, the watch had numbers 1 through 12 at the exact spots where numbers should be. No Roman numerals. They were actual numbers and they were B-I-G numbers.

But would this low-cost watch stand the test of time? Here’s the good news. It has. The watch has now

completed a year on my wrist and it still looks brand-new and it still keeps the correct time and it still hasn’t fallen apart – or given any indication that it is likely to do so.

It gives me goose bumps when my Facebook friends applaud me for finally corralling a decent watch after repeated failures.

Some comments: From my son Eric: “I wear sunglasses from the dollar store and people always think they’re expensive before I tell them where they’re from. I look good in them. I don’t have to worry about losing or breaking them, and I feel proud of myself for being good with money.”From Sue Treiman: “There is absolutely no difference between the cheap stuff at Costco and the moderately priced stuff you get at most stores. In fact, in most cases they are made by the same manufacturers. Unless it’s a top-of-the-line Rolex, the inexpensive timepiece is just as good there . . . . And Americans are too focused on consumption, anyway!”From Rob McNaughton: “I gave up on the expensive watches long ago. I’ve had a watch that I bought at Walmart over 10 years ago and never have had to replace the battery! And it’s got BIG numbers that I can read in my old age!”From Judy Randolph Goldenberg: “Enjoy your watch. No matter which watch you choose, I am your friend.”From Jeanette Griffin: “As long as it tells you the right time, it’s all good.”

OK, so that’s the update on my Target watch. But what does any of this have to do with bowling? After all, this is a bowling newspaper. So, it’s supposed to contain bowling content.

As a matter of fact, there is a connection from this one-year-anniversary watch to bowling.

I call it: “The Three Takeaways from Owning a Cheap (But Still-Ticking) Watch.”

No. 1: People’s time is expensive. Don’t wander away when it’s your turn to bowl in league matches. It’s rude. Don’t cheat your fellow players out of time. It cheapens the game.

No. 2: Make sure you get the big picture – like the hard-to-miss large numbers on my watch. In bowling, players leave plenty of sleepers. Know which pins are left after your strike ball and don’t be surprised. Then give the pins a good clocking!

No. 3: Don’t rush on the approach. Size up your target, whether it’s a strike or a spare shot. Take a deep breath. Time is on your side. Don’t cheat yourself before you know exactly how to play your shot. Then knock them all down in a timely fashion.

Bottom line: One year later, my Target watch is still alive and ticking. Find your own motivation for recording the best game and best series of your life. Time is of the essence!

EVERY WEDNESDAY AT 7PM

LAS VEGAS - California was well represented at this summers PBA Senior US OPEN. The Sun Coast Bowling Center hosted this season’s tournament and 167 profes-sionals showed up from all ends of the planet. Junichi Yajima from Japan and Peter Knopp from Germany were there as well as 28 Californians.

Our bowlers represented nearly twenty per cent of the field and four of our guys were among the fifty-three com-petitors who cashed. The four CALIFORNIA bowlers who took home checks were: 1. Joe Goldstein (San Bruno) $1,350 2. Don Blatchford (Santa Monica) 1,270 3. Darron Peters (Temecula) 1,000 4. Marty Deh (San Jose) 1,000

Tony Rodriguez (Rancho Cucamonga), Mark Mazzul-la (Brentwood) and Joe Salvemini (Nevada City) missed checks by just a few pins. Former California resident, Mike Haugen, won the tournament defeating Brian Le-Clair in the championship match.

Our guys competed against bowling greats Parker Bohn, Norm Duke, Doug Kent, Bob Learn, Brian Voss, Pete Weber, and Walter Ray Williams and held their own.

Great bowling guys and thanks for showing that Cal-ifornia bowlers are the best bowlers in the world. Also, thanks to the BOWLING NEWS for supporting California bowlers.

Falzo, Jeffrey Jones, Kevin Day, Thomas Baker and Vic-tor Serrano). Belcher quickly called his team members to see if it was okay with them…and Belmo had his team.

In his USBC Open Championships debut, Belmonte contributed games of 170, 225 and 257 (a 652 series) to “Round the Corner 1” (Belcher, Jacob Flicker, Richard Rathjen and Jeffrey Hogan). Belmonte concluded his USBC Open experience with a 716 series in doubles (with Belcher as his partner) and 705 in singles for a 2,073 all-events total, ranking 16th in the Regular Divi-sion standings.

USBC Public Relations Manager Matt Cannizzaro also noted, “Funny thing: we take the event for granted, but he’s never seen it. I realized that when he asked where to put his equipment after (ball weigh-in at) the scales. We told him about the march out. He said he thought that only was for opening ceremonies.

“As (USBC media representative) Aaron Smith noted, ‘Every day is opening day’ at the USBC Open Champi-onships.”

Belmonte continued from page 1

a 1429. Maranda bowled 288/730 and Madison 257/699. Other scores: Daniel Chin 279/705, Andrei Tacorda 278/705, Aaron Tabaka 246/713. Several 50 pins over awards were given out.

Zoe Rodriguez, 16, of Van Nuys was the highlight of the opening squad. She played the National Anthem on her Violin. A Junior at Van Nuys High School, she has played the violin since 1st grade and this was her first time solo performance for a big group. With a 160 average and hav-ing bowled since age 4, Zoe was ready to bowl with the Corbin Bowl group.

This youth tournament would not happen without the volunteer dedication of the coaches, parents and bowling centers. Special thanks go to the coaches that brought their groups from Southern California to the event via bus this year. The Jewel City group was headed by Marvyn Gal-sim who organized 12 teams/48 bowlers from his Center and to Rose Bianchard of Vista Entertainment Center for organization of 7 teams/28 bowlers. Vista Entertainment Center recently closed and program is now at Base Lanes at Camp Pendleton. These groups also came back to bowl on Saturday evening to bowl the Prince/Princess, Queens/Masters & Coaches Tournaments.

Thanks to Lynn Matsubara and Tom Leigh for running this Championship event. Larry Peppers CUSCBC Assn. Manager and Vern Coleman, CUSBC Office Asst. had ev-erything ready to run smoothly. Tournament Photographer Chris Arvanitis captured the memories for all the bowlers and parents.

Our Country Club Bowl team was again awesome. We thank our new GM Tahnee Martin, Asst. Manager Gray Williams and all our dedicated bowlers that came to keep the scores.

This tournament brings back special memories for me as a Junior Director organizing our youth to their State Cham-pionships back in the 80’s and 90’s. Now those bowlers are doing the same thing with their kids and many also received their 50 pins over award!

• Let’s kick off 1972 with a few facts and fiction!• GEORGE SNOW invited PRESIDENT NIXON to be his guest during the P.B.A. at BOWLING SQUARE. No response from the White House.• JERRY BURDICK was misquoted by a Bowling News typist. A printed line read “JERRY was “choking” his wife on the lanes”. It should have read “JERRY was “coaching” his wife on the lanes”. • Remember when you could buy a speed-boat with Blue Chip Stamps? How much is a book of stamps worth today?• MIKE FESSLER opened his Pro Shop in San Gabriel. He was the “man” in the San Gabriel Valley for many years.• 160 Pros rolled the P.B.A. at the “SQUARE”. 35 Hollywood stars bowled the “Pro-Am” plus the top P.B.A. guys. ‘Twas the biggest show in Southern California. GEORGE SNOW was the “ring master”. • Frito-Lay Corp. sponsored a T.V. show called “Fritos Sports Club”. It was aimed at kids 10 to 13 years old, to teach the fundamentals of sports such as skiing, ice skating, figure skating, basketball, tennis, gymnastics, football, bicycling and bowling. BOBBE NORTH was the choice for bowling.• Does the name BUCKY WOY sound familiar? He was the man who handled the wom-ens PROS. The Commissioner!• Question of the week was “Could DON CARTER win the DON CARTER P.B.A. stop at BOWLING SQUARE?”• Answer. No he didn’t. A guy named BILL BEACH aced BUTCH SOPER for the win. CARTER placed 95th! News from the ‘‘SQUARE” filled the paper for a month! Wonder what it cost to bring the Pros to town? BUTCH was the mechanic at HILLVIEW BOWL in Santa Ana at the time.• The NAGY’s kicked off the 27th Washington Singles at CORONA BOWL. What a tradition!• 100 women signed up to bowl the W.W.B. at MERLE MATHEW’s SANTA FE BOWL. Girl watching was popular since the gals were required to wear skirts!• A strange ad — “WANTED — an Experienced Lane Man or League Coordinator.”• The Queen Mary became a popular site for bowling banquets and meetings. BURBANK – You didn’t hear from me last week because I was in Louisiana participating in the USBC Women’s Nation-al Championships. While the trip was great fun and I met so many nice, female bowlers, the bowling was disappointing.

Every year, I wonder how the USBC can continue to put out conditions that are so difficult for the average bowler. I pride myself on being able to adjust to lane conditions but this was impossible! If USBC continues to do this, I fear they will lose the bread & butter bowlers.

I understand the intent of putting out a competitive shot but seriously, why bowl when you anticipate being 30 pins under your average? Bottom line: it was a very expensive trip to be so disappointed in our bowling and I may just think twice before doing it again.Sunday Night Hdcp: (scr) Sylvester Foster 255, Sharon Brown 169, Terron McElroy 712, Jo McMahon 469.
