At the recent Bowen Training Australia Instructors meeting the sciatic procedure from the SBP manual was praised for being one of the most popular, fabulous, far reaching procedures in the book. Used for re-setting the body anywhere from head to toe, great for non-responding shoulder problems, unreal for sciatic during pregnancy, tibia, groin adductor and glutes may respond well to this procedure. Worth getting to know this one well.

We cannot over emphazise the true value of our Instructors, where would we be without them? They are probably the ones who introduced you to Bowen/Bowenwork and changed your lives. Has Bowtech/Bowenwork changed your life, drop us a line and tell us about it.

We need to honour our Instructors in Australia more so than ever as The Bowen Training Australia Inc. a non for profit organisation has just purchased our R.T.O. from the Border College of Natural Therapies who have delivered nationally recognised training for 0 years.

Grateful thanks to Principals Michael Quinlivan and Karen Hedrick for establishing and running our R.T.O. and now assisting our Instructors in continuing with the only nationally recognized Bowen training in Australia.

We warmly welcome the new General Manager of B.T.A. Inc. Carmel Morley as Carmel takes over the reins from Michael and Karen, see report on page 0.

Bowen Training Australia only employs Bowtech trainers and Assessors who have met the requirements of Bowtech. The steps required for teaching the nationally recognized courses are as follows:

    1. Approval by Bowtech to become an Instructor/Assessor2. Signing of contract to teach with R.T.O. – B.T.A. and Bowtech3. Attaining a TAE400 Certificate IV in Training and Assessment (or equivalent current qualification required by governing body)4. Submission of a signed curriculum vitae5. 1. Stretch Reflex – most moves are done either at the origin, insertion or belly of muscles where the golgi cells’ receptors are located, informing the nervous system on the state of tension, length or stretch in the musculotendinous tissue. These receptors are stimulated during the “challenge” and the rolling part of the Bowen move. In case of a pain muscle spasm loop, we can break this vicious circle by changing the stimulus received by the nervous system.

    2. Joint Proprioceptors – all moves done around a joint directly affect the joint capsule and ligaments that are richly enervated with proprioceptors. Here again, stimulus will be received by the nervous system, inviting normalisation of the joint function without the need for forceful manipulation.

    3. Fascia – each Bowen move is done at the level of the superficial fascia and affects the relation between the fascia and the nerve, muscle or tendon being mobilized. The Fascia plays a major role in muscle co-ordination, postural alignment and overall structural and functional integrity. All these will be negatively affected because following injuries the fascia will stiffen, contract, torque and dehydrate. Following a Bowen session it is not uncommon to see adhesions loosen up, scar tissue

soften and posture and mobility improve without harsh mobilization or stretching.

    4. Segmental viscerosomatic spinal reflexes - These reflexes are engaged in most basic procedures to produce referred reactions to the internal organs through stimulation of skin and muscles.

    5. Autonomic nervous system (ANS) rebalancing – Bowtech/Bowenwork may have its most profound and important effect here where the body’s self-healing mechanisms is governed. The ANS controls over 80% of bodily functions and is very susceptible to external stressors. Most people today live in a constant state of high stress and sympathetic ANS overstimulation. Healing occurs after the ANS shift from sympathetic to parasympathetic dominance. The technique seems to catalyze that shift – during sessions, patients often quickly fall asleep or drop into deep relaxation and loud peristalsis can be heard. This indicates a shift towards parasympathetic dominance with release from stress at a deep level. This could explain why a few Bowen sessions frequently reactivate the recovery process, where healing from trauma, sickness or surgery has stalled or reached a plateau.6. Trigger Points – several Bowen moves overlap with recognized

trigger point locations. By clearing these trigger points, referred pain will be relieved and joint mobility and muscle co-ordination will be improved.7. Acupuncture points and Meridians – most moves overlap acupuncture points and some actually cross two or three acupuncture meridians at once. Acupuncturists have correlated the indications and effects of Bowen moves with the corresponding acupuncture points. They also commented on the immediate changes of the acupuncture pulses in response to moves or procedures. The overlap of these two systems could explain the very strong energetic component of the technique and its effect on the internal organs.8. Neurolymphatic points and lymphatic circulation – Bowen moves overlap the location of many neurolyphatic reflex points that regulate the lymphatic system.9. “Tissue Tension” Sense - The Bowen Technique does not use forceful manipulation. A unique skill of the Bowen practitioner is ‘tissue tension’ sense, meaning that the practitioners are able to discern stress build up in muscles and other soft tissue enabling them to perform specific Bowen moves to assist recovery.10. The key to success – There are frequent but very essential pauses throughout the session that allows the body time to respond and begin the healing process.

SALUBONG BOWEN PHILIPPINES What a journey...THIS IS BOWTECH/BOWENWORK

It all started in January 04 after the devastating Typhoon Yolanda. My husband and I decided to use my Bowen hands to donate to the people traumatised by this catastrophic event. We were joined by fellow Bowen practitioner and friend Jane Murphy and so the journey began.

On returning to Australia I put the word out for more Bowen therapists to join me in November 04. Many answered the call for future missions but this project was responded to by some brilliant therapists, Jim Kearney a retired firefighter from Texas, Karen Andrighetto a nurse from Port Maquarie Australia, Tania Lewis a fantastic Bowen therapist from Western Australia. They closed their Bowen clinics to join me in my mission to treat victims and workers of Yolanda.

And what a Mission this has been!!!!!!!! We have treated many many people.

In Manila the homeless and street kids in a mission of 300 people. A centre for single new mums and their babies.

We flew to Tacloban Leyte and worked in the Provincial hospital for days treating doctors, nurses hospital staff, victims of the typhoon, children, the disabled, the sick. Young and old alike gathered to be Bowened.

We went out to communities working in stifling humidity treating so many needy people. We went to Tacloban Fire station and treated the amazing men and women who worked (and still work) tirelessly saving and helping the victims of the destructive typhoon of all typhoons.

    ASTHMAThe condition induced

    by the treatment introduced

In 1984, my daughter’s award-winning portrait won her the chance to feature in the Philips Child Health Calendar. Quite ironic, when a year later, Kelly was so ill from a ‘mystery illness’ that the same photographer could barely recognise her.

The photographer’s observation and comments that day were to eventually lead me to do my own research and study. Eventually, I had the confidence to withdraw Kelly from the orthodox regimes of several doctors and specialists as I felt the medications were the cause of her year long problem. Being frequently hospitalised with collapsed lungs, my decision to treat her with a specialist diet for 3 months (no Bowen back then), brought massive disapproval from the ‘health providers’ who considered my allergy theory to be ‘unscientifically proven rubbish’.

To our amazement and delight, her symptoms cleared within 48 hours though we chose to continue the diet for the full three months. That experience and study has now led to a career as a natural health practitioner, specialising in children’s health and Bowen (of course).

Just as the photographer noticed that Kelly’s appearance had changed dramatically, I especially look for those subtle appearance changes that parents, who are with the child daily, often fail to detect. As my work progresses it has now reached a stage where at the first meeting, I can look at the shape and development of the child and virtually tell the parents the child’s

medical history from day one. I am also able to forewarn them of the consequences of continuing with their current regime and often the parents have commented that what I have described, is exactly what an older child in the same family has just been through.

Asthma and candida overgrowth (Kelly’s problem) are the two most easily assessed. My focus today is on asthma - the condition induced by the treatment introduced.

The respiratory system is a major channel for elimination of mucous - an excess of such can be as a result of digestive disorders, enzyme dysfunctions or environmental factors. The body will endeavour to eliminate the mucous on a 6-8 week cycle. Tragically, this is interpreted as an infection or cold rather than detoxification and treatment regimes of antibiotics are usually commenced. It appears that they clear the cold when, in fact, they have halted the cleansing process, which means there is now more mucous to clear on the next cycle. Six to eight weeks later, the child develops a worse ‘cold’ (heavier detoxification) and often a stronger antibiotic is introduced leading to worsening symptoms and more antibiotics and so on.

Initially, the child just has a runny nose and is less settled. The next stage sees a gradual loss of appetite, rosy cheeks and puffiness around the eyes as the sinuses are affected. The ears may become red and frequently infected. Even the child’s forehead may bulge with the pressure of the accumulated mucous (chubby faced baby). Continual ear problems may eventually lead to the child having grommets inserted. Further accumulation and antibiotic overuse will see the chest becoming involved with restriction in breathing and coughing to the point

of vomiting. The next stage is a fever to help liquefy the mucous.

Once the mucous breaks down, the cough will become more productive. Mucous may also be noticed in the stools.

Determining the stage of the symptoms gives us an indication of how weakened the elimination system is, how long it has been going on and a fair idea of how much medication the child has been subjected to. More than one course of antibiotics a year has the potential to shut down a child’s immune system while four courses in their early years can lock enough mucous in the respiratory membranes to create asthma.

In coping with the exhaustion of the situation, often other developmental aspects are also hindered such as growth, mobility, and speech and teeth development - until you have introduced BOWEN.

The results, for those lucky enough to be taken to a Bowen therapist, can be quite dramatic. Firstly, the body will move all the accumulated mucous so it pays to warn the parents that their child may produce enough mucous over night to flood a king-sized bed. The mucous from the sinuses may be as dark as licorice. The ears may release accumulated matter resembling old cream cheese or at worst the

    Pauline Senior

  • Page 7Page 7

eardrums may burst. The bowels may deliver a mixture of putrid licorice or rotten cottage cheese. (I’ll have you all off dairy products by the end of this). Parents are often shocked to think that their child had all this locked inside. Please assure them that there is no need to save the offensive napkin, because we have seen it all before.

They should offer, even the youngest of babies, tepid water during this process to help flush the system and especially if a fever develops. Stay in touch with the parents daily, if necessary, to reassure them of the ‘wonderful’ results the Bowen is having in correcting their child’s health condition. The child may sleep much longer and have no appetite throughout the cleansing process.

They may then notice a progressive pattern whereby the speech improves, the appetite will return and even different foods may be accepted, mucous will gradually disapear, the child will have more energy and vitality, no ear or throat infections, the muscles will develop, bone growth increases and in one case, seven teeth appeared in a week. Most noticeable of all is that the child’s appearance will have changed, especially if it was a classic ‘chubby-chopped’ baby. It will appear more alert and mature.

What of it’s future? You will have saved the parents years of anquish and hundreds of dollars in medical costs (over $,000 insurance claims in Kelly’s case). More importantly, you have interupted the cycle that creates asthma and returned the body to its original blueprint. The

child’s development will be greatly enhanced and statistics lowered.

Thankfully, the Bowen Technique addresses this situation readily. Educate all your clients, whether they are young parents, grandparents or neighbours. All will know of asthma suffers who can be free of this all ‘too common’condition. They need to be better informed and they need BOWEN.

You can now do both (and watch the results!)

It was a beautiful July Sunday morning in The Port, perfect breeze to cool me off from the heat of the morning sun as I gardened when a tiny two pound puppy dashing here, there and everywhere, not stopping for a second as she bounced up towards my home with her mistress Janice following behind looking as though she were attempting to control a great Dane in heat!“Energized or what?” I asked.

Janice replied, “She only stops moving when she sleeps! My husband tries playing with her on the floor for an hour or so to tire her out and we walk her several times a day around the block but it doesn’t slow her down at all.”

I suggested “The balancing and healing technique called Bowen may help this little one settle.”

“Really?” she questioned. “We can’t believe that such a small dog has so much energy with little rest! This little one was the only puppy in the litter that didn’t cuddle up with the others very well and doesn’t settle in our laps for long”.

I explained how babies and puppies etc. sometimes experience difficulties in the womb and during their birth and Bowen Therapy generally balances them beautifully.

“May I give it a try?”

Hesitatingly, “Sure, if you think it might work”.The little 5 month old puppy, during the entire conversation, was scurrying around zig-zagging everywhere her leash would reach wrapping herself

around my feet, the hose and the plants, not stopping for a breath.

The lady picked up this little one named Merlot and handed her to me saying “She usually doesn’t settle down for anyone other than my husband and I”.

Panicking, the little one proved her correct. As Merlot wriggled, attempting to get out of my hands I gently spoke her name and began moves and of the Bowen emergency moves on her and by the time I got to moves 3 and 4 little Merlot had settled down, to her owner’s total disbelief. The puppy’s breathing was still quite rapid even though she had physically quietened, so after a few minutes I did the emergency moves again. Merlot wasn’t too sure about moves 3 and 4, however, she only fidgeted a tiny bit, then her pulse and breath became even more relaxed.

We continued to talk about the Bowen method as the little one lay in my arms peacefully. I asked the owner to ensure this little one had lots of water available for the rest of the day.

After about three minutes I asked if I could do some more moves and when permission was given I did Baby Bowen. Merlot, who was absolutely relaxed, was placed gently on the ground where she just stood looking satisfied and content that life actually could stand still long enough she didn’t have to exhaust herself trying to catch it!

The owner and I continued to chat about Bowen Therapy and then discussed my garden for another fifteen minutes or so while Merlot drank some fresh water and quietly explored the garden. Then the owner still in disbelief headed off home with her subdued puppy.

Tonight, Janice will enjoy both her Merlots in peace.

    SQUARE THINKING

I first frowned and almost dismissed the comment, but then I had a light bulb moment. This saved unnecessary procedures that may not have given a result.

A client came to me presenting with thoughts of being unsteady and falling over. But it only happens when she is in the dark. This client filled out the intake form and it appeared that this falling over was her only medical condition, so as a Bowen therapist I started thinking about balance and what procedures I would include in my treatment. I enquired about any inner ear problems that may put her off balance of which there were no symptoms appearing. I then asked if she had a previous fall where she could have landed on her sacrum; as this is where our centre of gravity is, and again her answer was ‘no’. Her posture was good and her hips presented normal position.

I enquired about any dental work and she answered ‘no’, and her jaw aligned normally. So regardless of all appearing normal I decided to trust Bowen (as I always do) and first treatment was BRMs 1, 2 and 3.

When I hit the lat of her left knee I noticed that she had had knee surgery and looked quite recent. I asked her about the surgery and she said it was progressing quite well although she has this ‘profound dragging sensation that is quite strange’. I made a note of this and decided to include the knee procedure at same stage, but first I needed to address the falling.

The following appointment I enquired as to what, if anything, occurred within her body during the week. She felt really good but did notice her left knee ‘tingling’ quite lot.

As a Bowen therapist I needed to listen to what the body was saying, so the knee procedure was what I needed to do. Just before I started treatment I had this light bulb moment. I enquired what the surgery was for. The knee injury was to ‘replace/repair a cruciate ligament’. I asked if she knew whether the surgeon used a graft from the semitendinosus tendon or from the patellar ligament to repair the damage, the answer being ‘the graft came from the hamstring’.

I believe this was causing my client to fall over while in the dark, as well as having this dragging sensation in the knee. Not that there is anything wrong with what the surgeon may have done but more so to do with the proprioceptor sensing within the tendon of the hamstring. The proprioceptors are what give the body its spatial positioning. See page three. I would say in this case the brain is getting the message that this grafted tendon still thinks it is medially posterior to the body and trying to adjust the rest of the body to suit the position, hence the falling.

So my remedy for the falling was to do the knee procedure including knee reflex and burning heel procedures as well as the hamstring procedure. The client was already engaged in exercises given by the physiotherapist so the rehabilitation is taking place.

Over time the grafted tendon will learn its new function as a cruciate ligament and not a hamstring resulting in no more falls.

Worth thinking outside the square when nothing seems to fit.

Diploma Bowen Instructors Meeting SydneyWe have just completed two amazing days of training in Sydney. Thanks go to all of the wonderful Diploma instructors for their involvement and commitment to providing high quality training in Australia.

Exciting changes continue for Nationally Recognised Training in Australia, with BCNT gaining approval for the newly accredited courses for Certificate IV and Diploma, valid until 2020. Information relevant to these courses was discussed at the meeting to ensure a smooth transition from the expired courses to the new. All new students commencing training from 1 February 2015 will be enrolled into the new courses, 10533NAT Certificate IV in Bowen Therapy and 0534NAT Diploma of Specialised Bowen Therapy. More course details can be found on www.bowen.bcnt.net.au and www.bowentraining.com.au.

All students who began training prior to February 05 have until December 05 to complete their course requirements and have their certificate issued. Students taking longer will need to be reassessed against the new course requirements and complete any new associated tasks.

Another exciting change discussed is the transition from BCNT being the Registered Training Organisation (RTO) to “Bowen Training Australia”, the collective group of Bowtech Bowen Instructors in Australia. You will receive more information on this once the transition has been approved by ASQA, the governing body, so stay tuned for updates to follow.

We also all enjoyed the opportunity of working with Ossie and Elaine Rentsch to refine our teaching skills related to Specialised Procedures taught in the Diploma. It is always a pleasure to spend such valuable time with the founders of Bowtech.

The number of Diploma Instructors is growing every year, which is great news for students who have the opportunity of choosing from a bigger variety of classes and venues. There will surely be one close to you at a time that suits so please make sure you do a “course search” on the website www.bowentraining.com.au to register your interest, or view Diploma dates on the home page www.bowen.bcnt.net.au. It is always a good time to improve your skills and enhance your understanding of this amazing technique.

A big thank you goes out to all students and graduates for the support you have given to BCNT over the past 0 years of operation.

Good Day Ossie and Elaine,I had the pleasure of meeting and learning from you in Toronto. I am the lady on the table for gallbladder 2 and at the end of classes Ossie and I spoke about a client.Well, I didn’t believe it then but here it is Ossie.I am amazed. Your SBP2 Master Class was absolutely mind blowing and OMG I figured it out. I am sure there is more that I will pick up along the way but holy cow.Thank you so much for bringing this to the world. It was not necessary however as I grow along this pathway and am able to share what you have taught me and what I learn along the way, it is absolutely incredible and this fulfills my journey everyday as well.Bless your hearts for being so wonderful and thank you. You are bigger than the universe. Sincerely, Barb Spendelow Warman, Saskatcheqan, Canada

    Less is More

I began doing Bowenwork in 000 which was the year I began training and was instantly hooked. I had practiced and studied many complementary therapies and used them as part of my nursing practice for many years. All were rewarding and interesting in their effects and had their applications. None of them really compared to what I saw happening with this new technique called Bowenwork. A friend who lived in Adelaide who was also a nurse emailed me and said she had experienced Bowen at a health fair in Australia and thought I should look into it. I signed up within a couple months. I knew right away that it was something I wanted to do.

What I have learned over the 14 years that I have been practicing is how little can be so profound. I have treated patients that never went beyond lower stoppers and their body continued to balance at a pace that was comfortable and effective. In fact, any more, even repeating the lower stoppers after a wait in the same visit, proved to be more than one patient could take comfortably. This is a client with multiple concerns both physical and especially mental/emotional.

Another example is when a person who responded to just lower stoppers was doing very well and when I added the lats to the visit because of her complaint that her knee pain was really bothering

her, she worsened and returned to taking Dilaudid for pain. She never returned for another Bowen session. Had I kept doing the lower stoppers only, her knee pain may have responded but the temptation to go directly to where the pain was even though she had responded to lower stoppers in the past was just too great. This is where assessing where the patient is in their emotional and mental state and ability to deal with any worsening of symptoms should really influence how much is done in a visit. This patient also had a history of severe pain throughout the body.

I’ve seen generalized pain respond to lower stoppers, even jaw tension release and not return with just these two moves. Why do more, when the lower stoppers are doing the work. I’ve also heard from students that they enjoy taking review days or Module 8 courses since they rarely get to use procedures simply because the BRM’s in their practice seem to take care of most things.

In my own clinic, I rarely do more than BRM and maybe upper stoppers in the first visit. And I emphasize this in my instruction as well. When you have no idea how a body will respond given they haven’t received this work before, I always recommend going on the side of caution. There is, on occasion a situation where I know the person receiving needs to know they have received something profound. Perhaps I determine that they are very result oriented and need to feel an impact, even if it is feeling some detox over the next couple of days. In these situations, I would do more. Also if they are healthy in general with no major complaints or major physical or emotional trauma in their history - I might consider doing all the BRMs

but perhaps omitting 8a and 8b and 9-16.

When students are learning Bowenwork they often tend to over treat and it is almost always those that feel they need to treat the back pain, shoulder pain and digestive issues all in the same visit that get less improvement in symptoms in their patients. Another example is doing upper body work and shoulder procedure because they are coming in for shoulder pain and after 5-6 visits still haven’t done BRM . Doing some lower body procedures at this point may move things along but the impact of those first visits cannot be overstated. It is often better to start slowly and holistically then have to back track because too much was done in the first visit.

I would encourage practitioners to take more time and step back to assess what does that person need and only need in this space and time. Remove yourself from the equation and let the body on the table determine what is needed.

Bowenwork® - An Effective Therapeutic Intervention?A Systematic Review

Sandra Gustafson MHS BSN RNHolistic Healthcare Consultant, Bowenwork Practitioner & Instructor

The Original Bowen TechniqueIntroductionHolistic nurse leaders are advocates for inclusion of nonmedical therapies within the healthcare spectrum, andtransforming healthcare models by educating nurse colleagues, allied health practitioners and patients ofevidence-based complementary therapies that offer holistic and patient-centered care. An essential component of promoting wellness-focused care isdeveloping health awareness among our patients (and ourselves) and engaging in positive self-care and lifestyle activities. Holistic nurses gazing ‘Through the Looking Glass’ at Bowenwork (a gentle, soft-tissue relaxation technique), can enrich their knowledge of this complementary modality and develop a greater understanding of it’s potential for supporting patients of all ages with various health conditions. Clinical research points towards the potential for Bowenwork as a therapeutic intervention to optimize wellbeing, support coping with stressful experiences, recovery from surgery, injuries and illnesses, and facilitate healing.

The aims of this study were to systematically review the literature available on a complementary healingtechnique known as Bowenwork, clinical trials using Bowenwork as a therapeutic intervention, and to explorethe research methods used.

Search and Review MethodologyDatabases searched included Google Scholar, Medline Ovid, PubMed, PsychINFO,and CINAHL, and professionaljournals on complementary therapies and bodywork, and Bowenwork journals. The literature search included studies published in English from 1985–2013 using thesearch-terms: Bowen Technique, Bowen Therapy, Bowtech, and Bowenwork. The studies’ abstracts were reviewed, and those that referenced the above searchterms, provided health-related outcomes and datareported as quantitative and/or qualitative information, were included.

Findings36 citations were found, and articles met the inclusion criteria:• randomized clinical trial, n=4• quasi-experimental, n=3• mixed methods, n=3• cross-sectional studies, n=• case studies, n=06% of the studies reported that Bowenwork was effective for pain reduction, 39% reported improved mobility and 43% reported increased quality of life and/ or function.Additionally, several studies reported efficacy of Bowenwork in the relief of symptoms experienced by people living with chronic illnesses, such as multiple sclerosis, back pain, stroke(), and lymphedema in women from post breast-cancer treatment().

One hospital-based, randomized, blinded study of 91 patients evaluated the effectiveness of Bowenwork on patients’ post-knee surgery recovery and pain levels versus standard post-surgical care(3).A mixed qualitative and quantitative study on 0 participants with frozen shoulder, showed that Bowenwork demonstrated significant improvement inshoulder mobility, function and daily activities(4).In a study of 67 babies,

HEALTH BENEFITS OF BEETROOTA new UK study has concluded that drinking beetroot juice can lower blood pressure quickly and effectively. The vegetable has been part of a number of studies in recent years looking into its benefits to health. Nutrients present in beetroot such as “betaine’ are believed to reduce blood concentration of homocycteine which is linked to heart disease and stroke.

Beetroot could be a natural way to help prevent cardiovascular problems. Scientists at the Queen Mary University in London discovered that drinking beetroot juice lowered blood pressure to healthy levels within 4 hours and was just as effective as nitrate tablets in treating high blood pressure.

An organic form of nitrate present in beetroot juice has beneficial effects on cardiovascular health because it increases level of nitric oxide gas. The gas, which helps to transport messages in the body, helps muscles to relax, induces vasodilation (widening of blood vessels) and increases blood flow.

Study author Amrita Ahluwalia, Professor of Vascular Biology at Queen Mary’s William Harvey Research Institute said: “We gave inorganic nitrate capsules of beetroot juice to healthy volunteers and compared their blood pressure responses and the biochemical changes occurring in the circulation. We showed that beetroot and nitrate capsules are equally effective in lowering blood pressure, indicating that it is the nitrate content of beetroot juice that underlies its potential to reduce blood pressure”

He continued “We also found that only a small amount of juice is needed – just 50ml – to have this effect, and that the higher the blood pressure at the start of the study the greater the decrease cause by the nitrate”.Researchers added that this latest research will be welcome news to people suffering the hypertension (high blood pressure) who want to seek ‘natural approaches’ to reduce the risk of strokes and heart attacks.

. A stopper is still a stopper and will always be known as a stopper or temporary energy block to help control harmonic vibrational energy moving via the fascia.

Some instructors have chosen to call them starters or openers, the first of the basic relaxation moves. The lower back stoppers can have many functions on a person. Just read Janet Riley’s article on page .

    1. As stoppers they allow moves 3 & 4 and 5 & 6 to be more effective.

    2. They allow the client to relax, but remember the first time you ever do them on a client they may feel invaded or slightly shocked, if so it is wise to not even proceed with moves 3 and 4 until an appropriate time delay. As you know Margaret and Anne use moves and alone and await the body’s response. This is what Mr. Bowen did. He would say that is all this person can take today.

. Again it may bring back memory to the client.

. Yes, and can also energise the body. Clients may feel changes from head to feet. How then can they be stoppers, as I said earlier, the stopping part applies to the following moves 3,4, 5 and 6.

. Next point - these moves and may also assist lymphatic drainage.

. It should not be necessary to renew stoppers, when returning to a resting client an experienced practitioner will gently re apply moves and for the purpose of assessing tension, informing the client of relaxation achieved.

Mr Bowen never took more than 0 or 30 minutes to treat a client. The exception was the disabled or accident victim.

THE CONTRAINDICATION TO TMJ, VAGUS NERVE AND OTHER NECK MOVESThis is a reminder there is a contraindication for clients with Parkinson’s who may have an implant that has a wire that travels from the brain down the neck to a battery pack located in the chest. Practitioners should be able to see or feel the wire.

The device is made by Medtronics, Inc. It is strongly suggested no moves are done over this area in case it dislodges the electrodes or damages the wire. If there is damage, it would mean surgery to replace the wires.

This contraindication does not apply to pacemaker implants.

Dr. Robert Jay Rowen’sTHE GENTLEST, MOST EFFECTIVE PAIN THERAPY EVER

If you’re suffering from pain in your neck, shoulders, lower back, pelvis or extremities, you can be pain free and experience a full range of motion instantly! And you can enjoy this newfound relief without drugs, surgery, supplements, or painful needles!

Sounds impossible? It’s not! In fact, not only is it possible, it’s easy and gentle. What you are about to read is probably the most sensational story about pain relief you will ever read!

At a medical conference in Fort Lauderdale, the last speaker, Joanne Whitaker, MD, a soft spoken older physician, told of instant and dramatic relief of pain and suffering by a technique I had never heard of. Dr Whitaker explained that the technique was so invaluable and effective for the relief of pain that she long ago gave up all other treatment modalities, therapies and practices. She instead committed her professional life to this method, which on the surface seemed so simple that it could not possibly be true.

At the end of her one-hour lecture, she and her colleague invited the physicians in the audience to come up to the podium and sample treatments for neck and shoulder problems. I watched as doctor after doctor sat in the chair facing these senior ladies, describing their long term pain or movement anomaly and received a “treatment”.

My jaw hit the floor as the majority of them expressed absolute shock that their pain was reduced or gone. But, even more startling, since the sensation of pain could be subjective, was the instant and dramatic improvement in their

range of motion. And all that these two ladies did was just gently “flick” some muscles!

Dr. Whitaker was introducing us to the gentlest therapy I had ever seen. It’s called the Bowen Therapy which is named after its discoverer, a humble layman named Tom Bowen of Australia. People in pain somehow found their way to Tom. Claiming his insight was a gift from God, Tom discovered that gently manipulating muscles or tendons could relieve a very large variety of complaints, and not just musculoskeletal, but also organ dysfunction. As the years went by, Tom’s fame spread and he had lines of people waiting for his healing hands to give them relief.

Now you’re probably very familiar with chiropractic adjustments, where joints are manipulated. But muscles? How can this simple therapy possibly bring about pro-found effects on conditions such as respiratory infections, PMS, pelvic problems, kidney function and more?

Muscles operate in one dimension – they contract linearly. Three-dimensional movement is made possible by several muscle groups moving a joint, each contracting in a different direction. Muscles and tendons are richly filled with nerve spindles that sense tension and position. They’re tied in with the autonomic nervous system for instant regulatory feedback to the whole associated area of the body.

The adjustment of Bowen Therapy is called a “move”, which is made across or perpendicular to the muscle or tendon, 90 degrees to its line of fibres. The therapist simply places his/her fingers over the central portion of the muscles belly and then stretches the skin across the muscle to contact its edge. Slight pressure is placed on the edge of the muscle belly (in a 90 degree direction to its line of

force) so that the muscle is exposed to a gentle perpendicular stretch. Then on the outgoing breath, the practitioner “moves” his fingers across the muscle to the other edge. This results in discharge of the nerve spindles with in the muscle or tendon than can cause instant relaxation of that muscle or other associated muscles.

In Bowen Therapy, muscle moves apparently have the ability to reset the autonomic nervous system. This can result in greater blood flow, oxygen delivery and restoration of cellular activity in the whole distribution of that segment of the ANS (both in muscles and organs). An added benefit is the stimulation of lymph flow, which aids in detoxification and thus cancer prevention.

Tom taught groups of moves for specific areas of the body, and above all taught more treatment is not necessarily better. Groups of moves are called “procedures” so treating the neck would involve a “neck procedure”, treatment of the lower back is a “lower back procedure”, and so forth. There may be a few to several muscle/tendon moves for each procedure. Sessions typically take 30 minutes, but sometimes can last up to an hour, depending on the areas of needed treatment and previous Bowen Therapy preparation of the individual.

I came home from the conference I mentioned at the outset and told

    Sandra Gustafson

  • Page

my wife about it and our need to learn the therapy. Terri, an acupuncturist/physician, has just heard of Bowen Therapy as well and agreed we needed training in this needleless technique. Amazing enough, a patient told us that there was a Bowen practitioner in our building, Sandra Gustafson, who was originally from Australia. To our great delight, she was a world-class Bowen instructor and was preparing to teach a series of weekend sessions. The timing was perfect!

After just a few weekends, I got my first opportunity to try Bowen Therapy on a patient. Susan, a 35 year old woman, came to me for prolotherapy for her lower back. When I saw her, she was experiencing significant pelvic pain from menstruation. We were unable to do prolotherapy that visit because of a lack of required X-ray studies, so I offered Bowen Therapy instead to try to assist her menstrual discomfort. I “strummed” several muscle groups and tendons in her back and upper legs. To the amazement of the patient, her husband and myself the menstrual pain fully abated on the spot and did not return!

But the incredible results didn’t stop with Susan. Ted, a delightful 89 year old man, came to see me for severe pain in his right hip and barely able to walk. He was interested in prolotherapy as conventional treatment has failed. I performed Bowen Therapy doing the lower back and hip procedures and he walked out of the office ecstatic, scarcely using his cane.

Then, there’s my father who at 84 suffered from chronic hard-core general back pain for years. On a recent visit to our home, I performed the “low, mid and upper back” procedures on him and he was absolutely shocked at the nearly full relief of pain.

One very important observation Tom made is in the absolute need to allow the body to adjust to the moves. Hence, after a certain number of moves (usually four) the practitioner stops treatment and leaves the room for two minutes, allowing the nervous system to absorb the information before continuing.

Acute sprains and injuries are easily treated as well. My wife sprained her ankle at one of the Bowen instruction sessions. Sandra quickly performed a few delicate moves on the tendons around her ankle and the pain was reduced by 80 percent!

Back in January, I first introduced you to Bowen Therapy and how I used it to treat a man who developed spontaneous frozen shoulders. I simply strummed his upper back and shoulder muscles and he regained most of his movement in days – and this was after months of immobility.

Bowen Therapy has procedures for carpal tunnel syndrome, elbow problems, temporal mandibular joint dysfunction (TMJ) and foot problems (including plantar fasciitis). Here are a few of the areas Bowen Therapy can work:

The Coccyx procedure, a gentle move along the coccyx, performed after careful preparation in previous sessions, may relieve childhood bed wetting, gynaecological complaints (including PMS, menopause, fibroids, ovarian, or uterine symptoms) prostate problems, sciatica and migraines.

The upper respiratory/TMJ procedure can providing lasting relief for allergies, ear problems (including deafness, Meniere’s disease and tinnitus) Bells Palsy, influenza, headaches, TMJ problems and upper respiratory infections.

The lower respiratory procedure, which moves along the insertion

of the diaphragm on the lower rib cage, may relieve lung problems (including infections) and gastrointestinal complaints secondary to liver/gallbladder/pancreas dysfunction. While my wife and I were in India in February one of the Americans at our facility developed a severe case of influenza/bronchitis with wheezing on her lungs. With nothing available for her but symptom suppressing drugs, I performed the upper back (prerequisite) and lower respiratory procedure. She approached me daily over the next few days to let me know how much better she felt, and that she was able to participate in regular activities.

Another friend of mine, Linda (who is 55 years old) had abnormal gallbladder function (white coloured stools and gas), yet normal radiological studies. I had her see a Bowen Therapist in her local area, and in one session, with “moves” along her upper abdomen, her stools became much darker.

Are there any risks? Hardly. The client may get so profoundly relaxed during the procedure that upon arising from the treatment table, he/she might get momentarily lightheaded. My wife gets so relaxed, that she sleeps better afterwards. I also fall asleep on the table. You might hardly notice you are being touched. From my observation, this most gentle and completely safe therapy restores the flow of blocked energy, modulates the ANS and can correct improper tension in muscles.

Bowen Therapy is brilliant! It’s quick, painless and is easy on the patient and the practitioner as well. Usually, only a few sessions are needed, with session scheduled one week apart. Indeed, Tom Bowen was documented as seeing over 3,000 patients per year and claimed an 88 percent success rate. That’s a whopping number of visits by any standards for any single

  • Page

therapist! And to have a success rate that high is absolutely unheard of in any practice.

Bowen Therapy is not massage, acupressure, chiropractic, energy healing, trigger therapy, fascia release or physiotherapy. It does gently rock the connective tissue (fascia) but the moves stimulate

the body to heal itself in its own manner, like a catalyst, rather than force a healing reaction through significant input of outside energy. It’s not a cure-all and like all therapies, it has failures.

    FROM OSSIE’S OLD NOTES –

For UlcersCabbage juice, suggested 4oz of fresh cabbage juice with 4oz water twice a day.

The second day take 6oz of cabbage juice and 2oz water. The third day suggest 8oz of cabbage juice, pure stuff preferably prepare fresh daily.

My lecturer claimed he had never seen a case of ulcers that did not respond.

As I read through my latest copy of Bowen Hands I became fascinated by the broad range of issues Bowenwork has addressed. Baby needs in utero, birth, post birth, acute accidents, migraines, all manner of musculoskeletal disorders, emotional imbalances plus the magnificence with our animal friends. So much, from this one basic Bowen Technique principle “Rebalance the body so that repair can follow”.Each practitioner uses their own sphere of interest to develop unique applications of Tom Bowen’s original work.

A large percentage of my interest now focuses on clients whether very young teenagers or more mature experiencing bullying, anxiety, post traumatic stress, anger, grief or depression.

For example Jamie had been to see me ten years earlier as an anxious 8 year old – worried about leaving home after completing his schooling. He was the first born and experienced an extremely traumatic forceps assisted delivery. Now the handsome, gracious 8 year old was hoping I could help with his anxiety. ”After finishing with University I’m back living with Mum and Dad. I just don’t seem to be able to move on”.

So once again I said we would consult his body and his responses would guide me. After the initial Lower Back moves he became very aware of his hamstrings and tightness in his chest. Later after Upper Back -4

a distinct throbbing in his left thumb - strongly indicative of the Large Intestine-Lung Meridians. He became extremely relaxed and at the completion of the three basic Bowen procedures I discussed his responses.

“Well Jamie” I commented “my chart suggests issues of separation, grief and rejection.”

With a wry smile he noted that rejection had probably been his greatest lifelong issue. “In fact I think I know what it is”. Just last week (even before I made my appointment) Mum and I had a rare heart to heart conversation (or confession).

She shyly said that she had become pregnant when she and Dad were young students. They decided to terminate the pregnancy but at the th hour and a night of crying, she cancelled the appointment.

“No wonder I had a lifelong feeling of rejection and can’t bear to leave home!” A beaming smile spread across his face – knowledge is understanding.

A resolute young man walked confidently out my door musing over the pieces of the jigsaw puzzle that had now fallen into place.

No wonder this Bowen Technique holds such a fascination for me.

    My Fascination

  • Page 3

Tom Bowen encouraged us with a very deeply symbolic statement. “Be confident and trust the technique”. His life’s work was to leave the human race a great gift – the Bowen Technique.

In all of human history it is difficult to find any healing art – science modality which is as effective from “conception to the grave” in improving human health and wellbeing.

In every aspect “Bowtech” gives us a new elevated standard for health and healing.

Tom knew that the body was endowed with the ability to heal itself. He knew that we were a miraculous organism, living in a miraculous world – a universe of energy, which provided a matrix of life support, meaning and beauty for our sustenance, healing and inspiration.

He felt that this was a “God given formula” and that his therapeutic technique was a “gift from God” to ease human suffering.

The way forward with Bowen is very bright. We have seen “hundreds of thousands” of case by case examples in so many categories of illness, infirmity and damage go through miraculous healing and transformation; even experienced, senior Bowen practitioners have to keep “pinching themselves” to get their minds around the wonderful results.

So far in our relatively brief but amazing history we have been getting this “Bowen Healing Art” established in the world so it can benefit those who need it and so that we can learn to understand the deep power and ability disguised within its apparent simplicity.

We are now witnessing the Bowen Technique confirms its destined primary role in Body-Mind-Energy Health Care.

This method is unique and powerful in its capacity to facilitate the human body to heal and inspire itself. Inspire means to “fill with spirit” also your in breath. To breathe in the universal life force also known as Qi (chi) is to “trust the technique”.

It is there to be drawn upon. Energy and information are now the scientifically accepted basis of all things and life forms.

Ask a scientist today “what’s DNA?” The answer comes back “energy and information”.

Tom Bowen discovered a series of locations on the human body which switch on the Body-Minds ability to make and transform its own energy information transactions. It can be seen to do this through: Changes in blood, (lymph movement) often visible on the treatment table in improved circulation of blood and energy to the head. The structures in the head – central nervous system are a main part of the control centre in our “living hologram”.

. Improvements in energy, wellbeing, happiness, less stressed, or worried, more comfortable, lighter in body-mind and spirit.. Many symptoms are improved or resolved completely, permanently. The examples are numerous.. A key factor in understanding the Bowen Technique as a world class healing art and vehicle to improve and support healthy life is its profound ability to:. Energise the body-mind. Lift up the psychology. Lift the moods, feelings, emotions

. Help, resolve emotional, mental traumas, associations, depressions. Help switch on peaceful – calm – relaxed meditative factors which is why so many yoga, meditative, subtle energy aware people confirm this finding.

The challenge for us moving forward is to continue testing, quantifying, applying Bowen Technique in the theatre of Health Care – Healing and in Body-Mind-Energy Healing and in the quest for a better, gentler way to balance the Body-Emotion Mind-Spirit of the Human Race.

“Be confident – Trust the Technique” The body-mind can heal itself. Its resources are the living human miracle inside and all the energy, information and environment outside which is continuously exchanging, transforming, from sunlight to apple blossom to the apple to the compost heap and back to invisible energy again.

We find ourselves in the miracle garden in a miracle body-mind and we have Bowen points to switch it on to increase the capacity to restore and improve function through structure.

The key factor: Tom Bowen’s great gift helps activate the Body-Mind’s ability to improve and balance its own resources in total.

It is the Bowen Methodology; Bowen’s Laws.

The Bowen India practitioners have been very actively involved in promoting Bowen.

In Mumbai we participated at the Life Positive Expo at the World trade centre, organised by Shivaani Mahajan, Khursheed Irani, Shalini Menon, Geeta Bhansali and Dipal Parikh. They also offered treatments and package incentives to the general public there. Practitioners from Mumbai, Delhi, Pune, Navsari contributed by funding it and partly funded by the Bowen association of India. We did a short presentation as well. (Please do visit our Bowen India face book to see photos and activities).

Our practitioners are now doing Bowen presentations in their local areas at Rotary, various associations, schools and other centres when the opportunities arise as Khursheed has created a PowerPoint presentation and trained practitioners in presenting.

Bowen Pune participated in an expo on 30th and have also started working with the disabled on a voluntary basis, like we do in Mumbai. The West Mumbai practitioners participated actively treating the Rotary marathon runners including the winner.

Tona Dugal together with her son Angad participated wearing our Bowtech T shirts in the State Bank marathon in the disabled section and won a medal.

My Delhi trip was a huge success.

The World Zoroastrian Chamber of Commerce, Delhi Chapter, sponsored our Bowtech presentation and the whole event.

We are in the process of starting a Bowen centre at the Delhi Parsi premises which is a big complex. When it materialises we are going to call it the Delhi Parsi Anjuman Bowen (Bowtech) centre. Kavita Soni, Rama Raman and Ludo Vanhees will be taking turns in running this centre.

We are also upgrading our website of Bowen India! Thank you Ossie and Elaine for this wonderful technique you have taught us!Bowen India is slowly but steadily growing.

    REPORT ON INDIA

    by Farida Irani

We honoured our visiting Instructor Vimla Rao at the WZCC Delhi presentation the traditional way, with a shawl, for initiating the Bowen chapter there where she continues teaching.

The Delhi Bowtech team were very enthusiastic and we had a lot of fun during the teaching sessions. I also visited Alfred Alkrie and Lynette Nath’s Bowen therapy centre, very nice, professionally set up and Rama Raman works with them on weekends.

Once a month I go to Mona’s home to revitalize her body with our precious modality. Then we have afternoon tea and chat along about her many fascinating memories.

For this last month however my task was much more important as Mona was about to celebrate her 00th Birthday and she was feeling rather anxious about her ability to enjoy such a special occasion.

As you can see Mona came through with flying colours.ANNE SCHUBERT

In February 2015 on the Valentine’s weekend 14th and 5th we had eight Bowen Therapist man a stall at the Enlighten Adelaide Festival. The Enlighten Adelaide Festival is a celebration of health and wellbeing products and services in South Australia.

It was a chance for the public to learn and experience Bowen and other therapies. Our eight experienced Bowen Therapists offered their time over the weekend to help promote Bowen Therapy. There were four females and four male Bowen Therapists from all corners of Adelaide, this enabled all visitors of the festival access to a practitioner. We offered mini Bowen sessions at the festival by donation, going to The Tom Bowen Legacy Trust Fund.

We caught up with the other stall holders and explained the benefits of Bowen. There was quite some excitement about what we had to offer. We performed Bowen on the visitors of the festival but also on many of the stall holders too.

For the first time this year the Enlighten Adelaide Festival was part of the Adelaide Fringe. Adelaide Fringe is an annual open-access arts festival run over

four weeks in Adelaide, South Australia during February and March. Unlike a curated festival, the open-access nature of Adelaide Fringe means that anyone with a show, exhibition or cultural event is able to register and be part of Australia’s largest arts event. The result is one of the most diverse arts festivals in the world, renowned for fresh ideas, spontaneity and fun. Adelaide Fringe literally takes over the entire city with over 900 events staged in pop up venues in parks, warehouses, lane-ways and empty buildings as well as established venues such as theatres, hotels, art galleries, cafes and town halls.

Our event was in the Convention Centre of Adelaide and the event was printed in 350,000 Fringe guides as well as additional advertising. Enlighten Adelaide now had Channel nine on board as a sponsor which is a bonus.

We are all passionate Bowen Therapists and love spreading the word of the Bowen Technique to as many as we can.
