September 2019 No matter what age you are, arthritis can flare up leading to pain that can be debilitating in some cases. Arthritis is ex- tremely common among sen- iors with nearly half of those ages 65 and older suffering from some type of arthritis pain. The tricky thing about arthritis is that it can attack almost any part of the body at any time. Those who suffer from arthritis never know if the attack will last a few hours, a few days, or in some cases result in a chronic condition. Signs of Arthritis If youve never had arthritis, but suddenly feel unexplained joint pain, you may be getting arthritis. Here are some other signs: Joint swelling,Joint stiff- ness,Tenderness or pain when touching a joint. Prob- lems moving the joint Warmth and redness on a joint. If you begin to experi- ence any of these issues and they dont go away within two weeks, its time to see a doc- tor. If you develop a fever along with any of those symp- toms, you need to see a doc- tor right away. When you see your doctor you may need to get an X-ray or other tests done so the doctor can deter- mine if you have arthritis or another condition. Types of Senior Arthritis Not all arthritis cases are the same. There are different types that require different treatments: Osteoarthritis-This is the most common form of arthritis in seniors. When cartilage begins to tear and wear away, osteoar- thritis sets in. Since cartilage pads bones in the joints, it makes sense that there would be pain when this begins to wear away. The pain caused by osteoarthritis can be treated with acetaminophen or other pain relievers. Rheumatoid -This is an autoimmune dis- ease. When someone suffers from Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA), the body attacks the lining of the joints just as it would if it were trying to protect you from dis- ease. The pain that Rheumatoid Arthritis patients experience comes from the inflammation in the joints that this condition causes. That inflammation leads to pain and swelling that can last for hours. Sometimes the pain is severe that the person cannot even move their joint. While both men and women can get the condition, it is more common in wom- en. Treatment Besides over-the -counter anti-inflammatory med- icines, your doctor may also prescribe anti-rheumatic drugs to slow down the damage from the disease. Gout-Anyone who has had gout can understand why it is considered one of the most painful forms of arthritis. When uric acid forms in the connective tissues or joint spac- es, gout sets in. This leads to pain, swelling, and heat in the joint. It is often triggered after a patient eats foods like shellfish, liver, dried beans, peas, ancho- vies or gravy. While each type of arthritis has its own treat- ments that are best, there are some general ways to treat arthritis. Daily Exercise – One way to pre- vent and treat joint stiffness and pain is to keep them mov- ing. Walking, swimming, bike ridinganything that keeps you moving can help. Strengthening Exercises – Lifting weights is a good way to build muscle. Strong mus- cles help to protect your joints. Range-of-Motion Exercises Dancing and yoga are two great examples of this be- cause they both keep you moving and improve flexibility. Applying heat or cold to the area affected by arthritis may also help to treat it. Even soaking in a warm bath or heated pool can help. You can protect your joints by resting and eating a well-balanced diet. Also wearing the right shoes can help to protect your feet and lessen the strain on your joints. If you suspect you are suffering from arthritis, be sure to call your doctor to schedule an appointment . THE BOULDER REMINDER

R E M E M B E R I N G 9 / 1 1 We all said after the tragic at-

tacks on 9/11 that we would-

“The attacks of Sept 11th were

stronger and more unified.

We feel renewed devotion to

But are we? I hear the

torn apart by politics, hatred,

August. Make sure to give her a pat on the back and say congratulations!

The Hope Harbor Girls will join us to play Bean bags on the Patio Sept 16th, weather

permitting. Nails with the Hope Harbor Girls will now be on the 2nd Monday of the

month.

Mark your calendars: October 4th we will be having a “Flu Shot Clinic” in the 1st Floor

Activity Room from 8:15am -12n. Please bring your insurance cards and be

Attention Garden Club Members!

In lieu of having a meeting to wrap up the gardening season, we are letting you know

via this letter of friendly reminders.

If you have a raised bed garden and your produce and flowers are harvested for the

year, it is your responsibility to clean out your garden and dispose of remains into the

compost bin located in the smoke shack.

We want our shared space to look neat and clean for everyone. As tempting as it is to

simply throw weeds and dead plants on the sidewalk or lawn, we must pick up after

ourselves and dispose of it in the compost bin in the smoke shack.

If you have a raised bed garden, you will continue to have that same garden bed eve-

ry year, until you let Tenant Services know otherwise. If you would like to move to a

different garden bed, we will work with you on that once another garden bed be-

comes available.

Due to winter snow removal, some larger garden pieces in the Memorial Garden may

be moved safely out of the way until next Spring.

Extra flower pots will also be stored away during the winter months, so if you planted

any perennials in any pots in garden, it is your responsibility to move and care for

them once the season changes.

There will be an updated Garden Book for your viewing pleasure in the lobby coming

soon. It will showcase the Memorial Garden, and individual gardens throughout June,

July, and August 2019. We hope you take the time to go through it and see all the

beautiful gardens you have worked so hard on.

We hope you all had a successful gardening season. I know we all have been so

thankful to have such talented and caring gardeners do such amazing work in the

Memorial Garden as well as their own personal gardens!

If you have any questions or concerns, or are interested in a raised bed garden next

year, please contact Michelle or Emily in Tenant Services!

As people start planting their gardens please remember to look but do not touch. I wish

the deer could read.

Make sure you check out the Boulder Estates Facebook page for pictures and videos of

all of our events. Invite your family and friends to check it out and see what you are up

to. A copy of the calendar and newsletter are available on the Boulder Estates Website.

You’ve heard of the game “Where’s Waldo” …. Well each month we will have

something hidden in the newsletter that you must find. The first person to

find it and let Tenant Services know will receive a prize. Congratulations to

Barb Lindemann for finding the dog bone that was described in last month’s

clue. This month’s clue is: (” This keeps me boat from going adrift.”) You are

only allowed to win once every 3 months.
