With a mouth-watering list of over fifty endemics on the island, this tour covered the Malaysian states of Sarawak and Sabah in Borneo and its fantastic array of habitats from lowland peatswamp and dipterocarp forest to moss draped highlands. We managed 49 endemics from stunning Bristlehead and Bornean Ground Cuckoo to the less known but equally desired Black Oriole and Dulit Frogmouth, all three Calyptomena broadbills, all eight hornbills, fantastic looks at all the endemic pittas, great looks at all the possible trogons plus an outstanding array of night-birds including a daytime Large Frogmouth. The birds were not the only attractions with several star mammals like Bornean Orang-utan, Western Tarsier and a plethora of endemic squirrels.

Sarawak extension 31st March – 4th April After meeting the group the evening before we gathered in the predawn darkness to load up and begin our wonderful journey. The tour started with the pre-tour extension into Sarawak. We travelled south-west to an area of peatswamp, Borneo’s most threatened habitat, to find Red-crowned Barbet, Hook-billed Bulbul and Scarlet-breasted Flowerpecker. We managed great looks at all three with the barbet feeding almost at eye level giving us great looks at its massive bill, a noisy and active group of Hook-billed Bulbul crossing the boardwalk in front of us back and forth several times and a brilliant Scarlet-breasted Flowerpecker perched just above us showing his rich, red breast for all to see. The supporting cast included Scarlet-backed Flowerpecker, Red-billed Malkoha and Black Hornbill. From here we spent the remainder of the day traveling into Sarawak and to the local village where we would spend the night. The next morning we began our hike up into the Crocker Range picking up several nice species like migrant Blue-and-white Flycatcher, Bornean Treepie, Fluffy-backed Tit-Babbler, Gold-whiskered Barbet and Wreathed Hornbill before arriving in time for lunch at the camp. After our meal several of us headed farther up the mountain for our main target and soon enough we were admiring the all black plumage of the endemic Black Oriole. It sang repeatedly around us and gave us some great looks. With the major target in the bag we continued farther up. Little Cuckoo Dove, Cream-vented and Cinereous Bulbul and Mountain Imperial Pigeon provided some added bonus birds before we tried for Hose’s Broadbill and moments later one shot across the trail in front of us and perched a few meters from us calling. It circled around a few times before perching up for some great looks then dropping off into the forest. With two rare targets seen well we headed back down as it was starting to rain. Back at camp we relayed the story of the Hose’s Broadbill to those not with us, it didn’t take much to persuade them to go up and try for it again. It wasn’t there when we got up to the top but amazingly we managed to find two others on the way back down and two others calling in the depths of the forest.

With the pressure off we spent the day covering some of the more common targets and we did well with Rufous-fronted Babbler (of the distinct Sundaic taxa, already shown to be very different from the Indochinese birds), Crested Jay, Hill Blue Flycatcher (a future endemic split), more Black Orioles, Bornean Leafbird, Ferruginous Babbler, Maroon Woodpecker, Asian Fairy Bluebird, Maroon-breasted Philentoma and Ashy Tailorbird. Our last morning we began early in the dark looking for Bornean Frogmouth and after searching a few spots we found a couple of vocal birds and after a bit of bush-whacking we found a bird perched above us. We enjoyed it for a bit as it flew around to a few other perches before it moved off farther into the forest. This species is extremely seldom recorded from Sabah so was yet another added bonus for this extension. Once it was light we had some breakfast and packed up to begin the walk down. Brief looks at Bornean Banded Pitta as well as Asian Drongo-Cuckoo, Bar-winged Flycatcher-Shrike and a circling Crested Serpent Eagle added some nice birds before we were met and taken back to the village to pack up and head south towards the Indonesia border.

We arrived in the afternoon and settled into our lodge before dinner after which we headed up into the hills. Once in a suitable spot we began to try for one of Borneo’s most desired and rarely seen targets the Dulit Frogmouth, that we discovered in this area in 2010. We heard one calling down the slope from us so we manoeuvred round to get closer. The bird moved closer along the treeline and we soon got it in our torchlights for some fantastic views before it spread its wings and flew off into the night. A great start to this leg of the journey. The next day was spent up in the hills above the village where we got fantastic early morning looks at Bock’s Hawk-Cuckoo, prolonged views of a male Whitehead’s Trogon and Spiderhunter and just a fleeting glimpse of the Broadbill too. Once the fog lifted we continued with great views of Sunda Cuckoo, Orange-breasted Trogon, Verditer Flycatcher, Wreathed and White-crowned Hornbill, huge flocks of Eye-browed Thrush, Blyth’s Shrike-Babbler and Red-billed Malkoha to name a few. The next day we travelled back to Kota Kinabalu and bid farewell to Richard and met with Roger and Soren who would join the main tour.

Sabah main tour 5th – 19th April The main tour began the next day with a morning near the Rafflesia Centre where we began with Yellow-bellied Warbler, Temminck’s Babbler and Sunbird, fantastic views of Bock’s Hawk-Cuckoo yet again, Cinereous and Bornean Bulbul, Bornean Leafbird and Bornean Whistler too. After some great birding here we continued up to Mount Kinabalu where we stay for the next five nights. We spent four full days on Mount Kinabalu birding along some of the many great trails which gave us some fantastic birds like endemic Eye-browed Jungle Flycatcher, Bornean Green Magpie, Mountain Wren Babbler, Indigo Flycatcher, Mugimaki Flycatcher, Sunda and Chestnut-hooded Laughingthrushes, and a rather showy Bornean Stubtail. A male Whitehead’s Trogon showed up well on the first morning when it flew across the road in front of us and perched up which was great for Roger and Soren who had joined the extension. Taking a long trail one day got us away from the tourists and here we found a Whitehead’s Broadbill nest with one of the pair poking out of the jumble of sticks and moss. Another was seen farther down the trail giving us some further looks at this fantastic endemic. On another trail where we’d been hearing many Crimson-headed Partridge we’d just been talking about keeping an eye out down the trail for crossing birds when John called a pair which gave us all some great looks as they meandered across the trail. We ran into another pair even closer down when a lovely male walked across the trail right in front of us and proceeded to walk down a bank where we could see his bright crimson head. The female was less obliging and stayed hidden though we could hear her moving about. We had a similar performance with Red-breasted Partridge when we could hear a covey getting close so we all ducked for cover on either side of the trail and all got some brief looks when several birds popped out on the trail but crossed at a slightly more rapid pace than their cousins. One bird seeing us shot back across the trail flapping its wings and calling loudly.

Taking several of the paths along the narrow creeks got us some nice close looks at Bornean Forktail foraging along the rocky outcrops. We’d also been on the lookout for Bare-headed Laughingthrush when we heard a distant group. Luckily we were right next to one of the trail entrances and we managed to walk around and catch up to the group which included Sunda and Chestnut-hooded Laughingthrushes but the real star was one of the Bare-headed Laughingthrushes that popped up and began its hooting call in front of us, blue throat sacs all inflated. We spent a morning higher up the mountain where we quickly got into an active flock of Yellow-breasted Warblers and Black-crowned White-eyes which soon gave way to the hoped for Mountain Black-eye which showed very well they were soon joined by a large group of Pale-faced Bulbul and once they had passed we hung on for a bit and were soon treated to staggering looks at a male Fruit-hunter in the morning light. With the main three targets under our belt here we began to hike up the summit trail and after some huffing and puffing we could hear our next target singing buzzily from the tangled and moss draped foliage. Soon we were all managing to feast our eyes on a Friendly Bush Warbler. Having had good views of the bird we made our way back down stopping for some stunning views over the cloud draped mountain.

From the highlands of Borneo we dropped down in the heat and steam of the lowlands first at Sepilok where we spent an afternoon and morning getting to grips with some of the classic lowland Sundaic birds like Black-and-yellow Broadbill, Wallace’s Hawk Eagle, Long-tailed Parakeet, Red-bearded Bee-eater, a bevy of bulbuls including,

Puff-backed, Spectacled, Red-eyed, Cream-vented, Grey-bellied, Grey-cheeked, Rufous-backed Kingfisher and several endemics including our first pitta - Black-crowned Pitta, and Bornean Black Magpie. An afternoon trip to Gomantong Caves gave us the usual trio of Black-nest, Mossy-nest and Edible-nest Swfitlet as well as a mother and baby Orang-utan on the walkway in. A forest path nearby gave us Hooded and Blue-winged Pitta, Horsfield’s Babbler and Scarlet-rumped Trogon. We finished off the day with a dusk spectacle of four Bat Hawk’s and a Peregrine Falcon taking bats from the swooping flocks as they left the caves. The next two days were spent along the Kinabatangan River with another suite of endemic birds and other specialties. Our first morning was fantastic with one of the first birds being a pair of Bornean Ground Cuckoos doing their booming song behind us. We quickly turned the boats back around and found them close to the bank where we managed some short looks as they would perch up and call for a few seconds before dropping down and walking off through the surrounding foliage. We pulled back and manoeuvred around where we could see them coming and through a tunnel in the surrounding forest we managed to watch one bird perched singing for twenty minutes – what a look at one of Asia’s most sought-after birds. We racked up the hornbills with Wreathed, White-crowned, Black, Oriental Pied, Rhinoceros, Helmeted and Bushy-crested. Moustached Hawk-Cuckoo perched up singing, Ruddy, Blue-eared, Common and Stork-billed Kingfisher all added some colour, Malaysian Blue Flycatcher, Storm’s Stork, Lesser Adjutant and Jerdon’s Baza added to a growing list. We also stumbled onto a pair of Chestnut-necklaced Partridge singing on opposite sides of the river. We pulled the boats in to the muddy bank and waited and soon enough a bird popped out into a clearing and began singing to the bird on the opposite side. Really neat to see the bird so well next to the river. Night birding was also great with Large Frogmouth, Oriental Bay Owl and Buffy Fish Owl all within 45 minutes! There was a great supporting cast of mammals and reptiles with massive monitors round the lodge with Malay Civet, Bearded Pig, Sunda Silvered Langur, Red Leaf Monkey and Proboscis Monkey bolstered by Long-tailed and Pig-tailed Macaque on a regular basis. We even had a Mangrove Snake put in an appearance.

Our last stop was the famous Danum Valley and what a show she put on. Four days here gave us the last of the endemic pittas, Bornean Banded showing well in bright yellow and blue plumage as we all hid behind a huge buttress one morning. On another day with Blue-headed calling often, we tracked down a lovely male that crossed right in front of us towards the river so we knew it would head back and sure enough after a few minutes it hopped back across. Tempting fate we stayed put for a few minutes longer and it returned hopping up onto a buttress root for the best looks yet. We saved the best for our last morning and after some patience we also garnered fantastic looks at Blue-banded, a real highlight with its vivid red plumage a beacon in the greenery around it. Cinnamon-rumped Trogon was an unexpected bonus along with Diard’s, Scarlet-rumped and Red-naped. Green Broadbill gave us the sweep of the Calyptomena broadbills – no mean feat, plenty of babblers with Ferruginous, Grey-headed, Black-capped, Short-tailed, Moustached, Rufous-crowned, Scaly-crowned, Chestnut-rumped, Striped Wren, Bornean Ground and Black-throated Wren helping us clean up the endemic babblers. Rufous-chested, Large-billed Blue, Bornean Blue, White-tailed Blue and Grey-chested Jungle Flycatchers were all seen well. Some

time on the canopy walkway gave us great views of Spectacled and Long-billed Spiderhunter bathing in a water catchment in one of the huge dipterocarp trees, plus Red-throated and Blue-eared Barbet in close. Indian and Asian Drongo Cuckoo put in an appearance calling noisily in the canopy and we had great looks at flowerpeckers too with Crimson-breasted, Yellow-breasted and Yellow-rumped plus Red-throated Sunbird, Greater Green Leafbird and Bornean Spiderhunter in the flowers around the lodge. Along the river we picked up Grey-headed Fish Eagle and Great-billed Heron but several Straw-headed Bulbuls were only seen in flight. Another highlight was a nesting Large Frogmouth over one of the trails with the fluffy chick poking its head out from under the breast of the sitting parent. We took several night drives which gained us great looks at Sambar and Lesser Mouse Deer, Thomas’s Flying Squirrel plus a fantastic Western Tarsier wonderfully spotted next to the road and a hunting Brown Wood Owl. A short night walk one evening got some good looking frogs with Harlequin Flying Frog the stand out. Both Huntsman and Tarantula spiders were see well too. The star of the show though came on our first morning when a family party of seven Bristlehead’s showed up down to four meters off the ground feeding and calling back and forth right above us. We all managed some fantastic looks at this endemic family, which was a highlight for most on the tour, spent a good twenty minute period foraging in the tree around us. Sadly though our time in Borneo was coming to an end and we had to bid farewell to Danum and head back to Kota Kinabalu.
