Mass in the time of COVID-19 Aleteia/Fr. Aquinas Guilbeau, OP/March 8, 2020
The Church does not fail, whatever the trials of the day, to offer the whole Christ to all of the faithful.
Last Thursday afternoon, residents of Washington, DC, learned that the new coronavirus had arrived at their city’s doorstep. Earlier that day, Maryland confirmed that three of its citizens had contracted the virus. On Friday, as prior of the Dominican House of Studies in Washington, I followed the example of superiors and pastors around the country and implemented measures aimed at preventing the spread of the virus in my community. Those measures include significant changes to the liturgical practice, namely the suspension of exchanging the sign of peace and receiving communion under both species (the body and blood). Given how the coronavirus spreads, these two measures represent common-sense steps toward preventing future infections. At the same time, they represent consequential alterations of familiar religious practice. This is not to be taken lightly, and most superiors and pastors do not. More than changing where the celebrant sits or where the choir members stand, suspending the sign of peace and communion under both species touches on how the Christian community has grown used to communicating with God and each other at Mass. Sensitivity has to be shown, therefore, to those not only worried about the spread of disease, but also disoriented by these liturgical changes. The Mass may appear suddenly to be less, to mean less, or to give less than usual. The good news is that these changes touch nothing of the essence of the Mass.
The sign of peace has become a beloved expression of reconciliation and unity among believers just before they approach the altar to receive communion. Husbands embrace wives, parents embrace children, friends embrace friends, and strangers embrace strangers, each wishing each other the peace of Christ. When prayed attentively, this is a beautiful prayer. Without the sign of peace, is the peace of Christ suddenly missing from Mass? No, to be sure. While the sign of peace expresses the peace of Christ, it is not the source. The sign of Peace does not create Christ’s peace. Christ remains the source of peace, and he gives his peace to his disciples through his presence in the whole liturgy, namely through the proclamation of the scriptures and in the celebration of the Eucharist. Christ gives his peace to those who gather to pray to him, to hear his Word, and to offer the Eucharist sacrifice. It may be prudent for the Church not to express the sign of peace for a time by a kiss or handshake, but that doesn’t mean that the faithful at Mass don’t receive Christ’s peace in full. We do. Similarly, communion under both species has become the way in which many Catholic prefer to receive the Eucharist. In accord with the words of communion under both species, are they receiving less of what the Lord pledges to give them? No, to be sure. While Communion under both species expresses more fully the sign of the Eucharist sacrifice as a meal, it isn’t necessary to receive both in order to participate fully in the sacrifice itself. As the Catechism reminds us, communicants receive the whole Christ under either species of the Eucharist: Since Christ is sacramentally present under each of the species, communion under the species of bread alone makes it possible to receive all the fruit of Eucharistic grace” (par. 1390). Jesus does not give us less of himself if we receive him only in the Sacred Host or in the Precious Blood. He gives his whole self under each species. It may be prudent for the Church not to enjoy for a time the full expression of the Eucharistic sign, but that doesn’t mean that the faithful at Mass don’t receive the full grace of the sacrament. We do. In these trying and uncertain times, the Church does not retreat from the world’s troubles. She may simplify her life for a moment or two, in order to safeguard her children from harm, but she surrenders nothing of her essence in doing so. She remains the guardian of Christ’s truth and the steward of his grace. As such, the Church does not fail, whatever the trials of the day, to offer the whole Christ to all the faithful. PONDERINGS FROM FATHER BILL In all of my years of existence, I do not recall a crisis of this magnitude in the aftermath of the worldwide hold by the Coronavirus. The convergent worlds of economics, government, entertainment, laws, and even organized religion have been decimated numerically and emotionally. When China closed all churches in late February, I was suspicious. Then Italy announced similar closures, before the Vatican walled off Saint Peter’s Square and the museums. The Archdiocese of New York implemented policies of safety, as no one really knows how this health horror show will be settled. Human efforts aside, I do believe this stirring of instability and unpredictability is a chance to realize that our true strength and durability exists in our sacramental and prayerful relationship with God. No human structure or institution comes close to the safety and purity that He offers to us. Father Bill

Dear parishioners of Sacred Heart and Saint Francis of Assisi We are ultimately protected by the Sacred Heart of Jesus with the human examples of Saint Francis and Mother Teresa of Calcutta. In all of my years of living, now nearly half as a priest, I have never experienced the sense of aloneness with God as we are experiencing collectively now.
Yes, the horrors of the September 11 attacks in 2001 struck us as a nation yet in certain geographical areas that most of the country were spared from. There were fears of more terrorist attacks elsewhere within America, but it never happened. This battle with the Coronavirus is striking the entire world at the same time, with no end time or solution in sight. First came the cancellation of so many normal activities to be part of, such as watching our favorite sports teams’ battle for playoff spots, and then the cancellation of Masses in the Archdiocese of New York and elsewhere around America. That which is familiar and in our daily spiritual and emotional fabric has inexplicably been taken away from us. Incomes, certainties, goals, and human closeness once taken for granted are limited or no more for now. Over the great expanse of human history such challenges of war and disease have been a constant threat. Jesus worked with our spiritual ancestors in these situations 2000 years ago, as did Saint Francis of Assisi 800 years ago and Saint Mother Teresa of Calcutta 70 years ago.
Spiritual Communion is always present individually and collectively, even when the sacraments are taken away from us by terrorism or sickness. The prayerful interior soul still is capable of contemplating and discerning. There is the apt expression "absence makes the heart grow fonder” I suspect we will come back to each other more deeply and spiritually when Masses are resumed again. In a modern culture, no different from past cultures, where entertainment and greed of all sorts gets out of control God still beckons us back in the goodness and badness of times. I have lost my Mom Barbara Ellen and Brother Joe over this past year, and you undoubtedly other types of similar losses. God remains to sustain us throughout the blessings and deficits, and we in appreciation do to Him through prayer and sacrament. Prayers never stop, and when the Coronavirus runs its course we will unite again in a sacramental way. We should all be different by then, focusing more on what unites us as a parish than what divides.
I will miss your encouragement until that day of return comes again, but the prayers for each other never stop. May none of us, especially including me, will never take our faith for granted again. A faith in Him that is far more important than our favorite sports teams, cars, monies, houses, and other hobbies. Earthly endeavors are just that - earthy and temporary. They end at the moment of the eventual encounter with the grave six feet under. Spiritual endeavors of prayerful goodness and sacramental connection bring us individually and collectively to a different level of the twilight zone - the Heaven that awaits us which Mass reminds us of. It is a long way to Tipperary, but Jesus walks with us on the beach paths of life.
God bless, be safe and see you soon. Father Bill Damroth

FOURTH SUNDAY OF LENT First Reading: 1 Samuel 16:1b, 6-7, 10-13a In seeking a King for the Israelites, Samuel traveled to Jesse of Bethlehem, who had seven sons. Commanded by God to ignore the elder sons, Samuel anointed the youngest, David. Second Reading: Ephesians 5:8-14 Paul exhorts the Ephesians to live as “children of light” in goodness and truth and to avoid evil deeds “done in darkness.” Gospel: John 9:1-41 Jesus performs the miracle of giving sight to the man born blind. Because Jesus performed this miracle on the Sabbath, the Pharisees called him a “sinner,” but the blind man said, “He is a prophet.” Jesus later reveals to the blind man that He is the Son of Man.
