Budget Lunchbox Tips

A little planning, buying in bulk, lots of containers and some preparation, can go a long way to saving you money.

Children who have healthy snacks throughout the day, including vegetables, dairy and fruit are more likely to be able to concentrate at school, have better behaviour and improved test results.

Healthier snacks aren't expensive. Here are some quick, cheap, healthy snack ideas worth considering.

Putting aside just 10 minutes on a Sunday for lunchbox preparation can make a difference to your budget. It takes little time to cut cubes of cheese and portion out crackers, rinse cherry tomatoes or chop carrots or other vegies ready to pack each morning.

Instead of zip seal bags use a reusable plastic container to cut down on costs.

When packing citrus fruit use a sharp knife to score the skin in segments as it makes it easier for little fingers to peel.

Being mindful of any food allergies registered at your school will help you make the right choices not only for your child but for others. It also means you can buy some items in bulk and divide up yourself which will save money!

This lunchbox was put together for under $2, now that's a lunchbox on a budget! A little planning meant leftover roast vegies were used and on Sunday afternoon eggs were boiled and vegies and cheese were sliced ready to be packed through the week.

Spending some time to cook vegetable and fruit muffins, slices or biscuits will also cut costs and is a fun activity to do with your child. Consider recipes that can be frozen and make two or more at a time to provide a variety.

When children are encouraged to share the preparation of making their lunches, they are often more likely to eat it.
