December 2010 Chadwick Sports Begin Another Run by Athletic Director Tom Goodspeed

It has been an honor to take over the reigns of the athletic department for the mere four months I have been here.

Being a new face and fresh off the boat from Hawai’i, it is apparent to me that the parents, coaches, student-

athletes, and community of Chadwick are warm, caring, and driven people concerned with nothing but support,

spirit, and enthusiasm to make things work here. This feeling is palpable and engendered in the support provided

by the Booster Club. This group of parents acts as team reps providing organizational and spirit support to the

coaches and athletes. They sell merchandise to foster school unity and spirit, and they organize events like the

Blue and White BBQ. Any proceeds made beyond the operational costs of the club circulates back into the

program by way of funding items the department needs to help our athletic program beyond what is supported

within our budget. To this end, I would like to thank our Booster Club president, Kathy Compton. Her team of

officers, coordinators, and sports reps has been fantastic throughout the fall season.

I would like to share some of my experiences and impressions from the fall season. Each coach has written a

season summary outlining the accomplishments and experiences from the fall. Please enjoy them and the

accompanying photos. I cannot thank my coaching staff enough for their dedication and devotion to their

respective sports and, more importantly, to the kids.

The success of our fall sports teams is no more evident than in our girls volleyball team’s accomplishments as the

Prep League and CIF Southern Section CHAMPIONS. With support from parents, staff, and ‘The Troops’, the

girls had a distinct home court advantage and used that energy to be undefeated at home, including an incredible

come-from-behind victory over Brentwood in the Regional Semifinals of the CIF tournament. Coach Anita

Drennen along with daughter Lindsay did a fabulous job of instilling the power of teamwork in her girls.

Under the guidance of long-time Coach George Ramos, the girls and boys cross country teams both finished 2nd in

the Prep League. Sam Cartwright beat them all and was crowned Prep League Champion with his first place

finish. The boys team had a great race and also came in 2nd in the Southern Section Championships.

Boys water polo had a solid season under the tutelage of Head Coach Will Didinger and assistant Patrick

Jacobson. The boys came in 2nd in the Prep League and made a good run in the CIF playoffs.

Football had an exciting season resulting in a 2nd place finish in the league and birth in CIF playoffs. With many

home games this year, the Pascoe Pavillion and Commander Field were hopping. Concessions were booming, the

crowds were animated, and games were exhilarating. The win over Poly for homecoming was a prize. Coach

Gary Willison and his staff did a great job of preparing our football players to be able to compete in every game

this season.

The cheerleading squad, under coach Leslie Miller, cheered their hearts out for the games and did great half-time

and quarter break shows and cheers. The football boys reciprocated in kind with a song to them on the

cheerleader’s spirit day after the game.

Leading into the homecoming game was the Booster club-sponsored Blue and White BBQ. It was a fun-

filled afternoon of food and games. I would like to thank Christie Mavredakis and her support cast in

organizing the event that was well received by all.

Chadwick Sports Begin Another Run (continued)

Leading into the homecoming game was the Booster club-sponsored Blue and White BBQ. It was a fun-filled

afternoon of food and games. I would like to thank Christie Mavredakis and her support cast in organizing the

event that was well received by all.

Coach Leach had a solid season with the girls tennis team. They came in 3rd in the league and earned a wild

card spot in the CIF southern sectionals. The team stormed their way through the first two rounds and then lost

to a tough San Marcos team in the 3rd round.

Coach Stephanie Yocum worked hard with our young golfers as they drove, chipped, and putted their way to

becoming better golfers each day and each match.

After living and working through the fall season at Chadwick, I feel that the athletic department accomplishes in

many ways the school’s mission ‘to discover and nurture the special gifts each student possesses; to deepen each

student’s understanding of the complexities of the world; and to inspire each to realize his or her full potential.’

We set out to nurture the whole person; that is, the mental, emotional, and physical well being of all our

student-athletes. We offer students numerous and diverse opportunities to experience meaningful growth

through the development of sound habits of mind and body. Our purpose is to enhance self-esteem and self-

respect and to guide our young people toward becoming mature adults who see beyond individual needs to the

needs of the larger community.

In no way are we perfect, however. As a department, we make mistakes. As coaches, we make mistakes. The

hallmark of the athletic experience is how one responds to these mistakes. We make ourselves BETTER by

learning from our mistakes, and in doing so set positive examples for our students.

Jim Thompson, the founder of Positive Coaching Alliance, talks in his book Elevating Your Game, “If there is

one word associated with a Triple-Impact Competitor, it is ‘better.’ Better is reflected in the Olympic Motto-

‘Citius, Altius, Fortius!’ – ‘Faster, Higher, Stronger!’ Notice, in the premiere competition in the world - the

Olympics - it isn’t about being fastest, highest, strongest. If you are the best in the world in your event, you still

want to get better. For the best, ‘better’ is better than ‘best.’”

The Chadwick athletic department embodies this through instilling upon our students the desire to participate,

to compete, and to become better!

As I reflect on the fall season, I look forward to the winter season. Thank you all for your support with my

transition into this position, and, more importantly, for your continued support in making athletics a positive

and rewarding experience for our students. Your enthusiasm and level of support astounds me! GO ‘WICK!

Welcome to the Booster Club! by Booster Club President Kathy Compton

Welcome to a new year of Booster Club activities! This year we have already had five action packed Spirit Days, a bustling Blue and White BBQ for the Upper School, and not to mention the surge of Spirit Wear popping up all over campus.

As you can see, starting with this edition we have made the decision to move the Booster Club Newsletter online. This change provides us with two key benefits. First, the transition to electronic distribution and display affords us increased flexibility in the type and quality of information we can provide to our members. While this first electronic edition retains the existing look and feel of the prior print publication, over time we will evolve the newsletter to provide enhanced features and coverage. And second, electronic distribution provides substantial cost savings, which means that an even greater percentage of your membership contribution can be funneled directly into enhancing our facilities and the overall experience for our athletes and coaches.

I would like to thank the nearly 200 families who joined the Booster Club this year, our loyal fans that are out there cheering on our athletes, those of you who have supported us by purchasing Spirit Wear, and our committed volunteers who have helped sell our apparel and feed our students. Your help is not only appreciated but also vital to the success of the Booster Club.

Through your continued generous support, last year the Booster Club was able to fulfill the following needs of the Athletic Department:

· Four Athletic Banners for the Gym

· Two Large Dolphin Canopies

· Two portable water carts

· A microwave for the Athletic Conference room

· An overhead Video Projector for the Athletic Conference Room

I am also pleased to report that this year we are excited to introduce significant enhancements to the College Athletic Information Program. The program will be a valuable resource for parents and students who are considering pursuing athletics at the collegiate level. More information about this program is included later in this newsletter.

Finally, looking forward to next year, there are multiple opportunities to get involved in your Booster club, ranging from treasurer to merchandising to membership. If you are interested, please contact me at [email protected]. Thank you again for all your support and I look forward to seeing you in the stands. Kathy Compton President Chadwick Booster Club

2011 Cross Country

Wrap Up Head Coach George Ramos

The Chadwick Cross Country teams continue to operate at high levels each season. The boys Varsity team finished second in the Prep League; Sam Cartwright won the individual championship. The team of Sam, Juan Valle, Evan Hamilton, Matt Freeman, Henry Cox, Brad Boboc, and Justin Hoot eventually finished second at the Southern Section Finals to earn their first-ever postseason trophy and qualify for the State Championships. By finishing sixth, Sam earned First Team All-CIF-SS honors, while Juan earned Third Team honors by finishing in twentieth place. At State the boys finished seventh in Division 5. The boys Junior Varsity team finished third overall in the Prep League. The Junior-Varsity scorers at Prep League Finals were Robert Leach, Will Behenna, Wyatt Fiske, Riley Loftus, and Barry LeMesurier. The girls Varsity team also finished second in the Prep League. The team of Lauren Ouye, Melissa Shadden, Jennifer Calfas, Katie Courtney, Hailey Waller, Valerie Yarema, and Megan Calfas would go on to finish fourth in the CIF-SS. Lauren Ouye earned Second Team ALL-CIF-SS honors by virtue of her tenth place finish. At the State Meet the girls finished eighth in Division 5. The girls Junior Varsity enjoyed a strong season to finish second in the Prep League. The Junior-Varsity scorers at Prep League Finals were Sam Speroni, Jackie Stoneburner, Elizabeth Haile, Emily MacQuarrie, and Patty Jeon. The coaches would like to thank the fifty-seven athletes and all of their parents for a wonderful season and would like to extend a special thanks to this year’s ten seniors: Sam, Justin, Robert, Riley, Barry, Jen, Katie, Val, Jackie, and Zach Blickensderfer.

We had three returning players this year, Junior Jessie Ralph and Sophomores Grace Memmo and Amanda Asato. In golf, each team plays with seven players, and the top five scores count. The girls had to talk some of their friends into joining the golf team so we could field a team. We ended up adding two sophomores, Meghan Hood and Elaine Sim, and one freshman, Rebekah Roberts. Jessie missed three matches when she went to Thailand with Round Square, so we had only five or six players in each match. Four of our six players are very new to golf, so our main goal was to improve and just have fun. Jessie and Grace are our most experienced players, and they each lowered their average by 5 strokes from last year. The others also showed improvement, getting better scores as the season progressed. All the girls seemed to enjoy the season, and it sounds like they will continue playing during the off-season.

We have completed our 2011 football season highlighted by our victory over Poly along with winning the rivalry “Gold Cup” game against Flintridge Prep. Our pre-season training camp consisted of 8 hour days; grueling hard workouts and teaching/film sessions. Not only did our players commit themselves to the game of football, but also to a leadership program helping first year players adjust to the elements of football while never forgetting the spirit of ‘just having fun.’

It has been a year of great perseverance, game experience, and skill development for the members of the football team. We have measured our success by the improvements made from week to week, both individually and as a team. By this account, there is no question it has been a successful season. In executing offensive plays and defensive schemes, players have learned to work together, to rely on each other, and to be accountable for their responsibilities. In so doing, each is establishing a solid foundation of discipline, determination, and dedication upon which to build both on and off the playing field.

Special thanks to our trainer, Theresa Reyes, and dedicated boosters and families for all your help! Thanks to athletic director, Tom Goodspeed, Dr. Borden, Dr. Lewis and our football staff this year whose hard work and dedication proved invaluable to our overall success. Hope to see you all at the games next season!

The Chadwick boy’s varsity water polo team had another very successful season this past fall. Led by senior co-captain’s Matty Gallas and Blake Range the Dolphins swam to an impressive 19 – 7 overall record. The boys also fought tooth-and-nail throughout a very competitive Prep League schedule, securing second place with an 8 – 2 record.

Matty Gallas and Blake Range, widely respected as two of the best scorers in all of the South Bay, were the catalyst for much of the team’s accomplishments in the pool this past season. Not only were they the teams two top goal scorers, the duo also led the team in assists, steals, and ejections drawn. Their vast playing experience and mature leadership skills helped the rest of the team develop into a well-oiled machine that was not only highly respected by their opponents but also feared.

Seniors starters Drew Von Bergen, a defensive power house with tremendous speed and the ability to put the ball in the back of the net when it counted and Sam Farrell, an all around solid player who constantly contributed with timely shots and sound defense, helped facilitate all of this team’s success. Junior Wesley Rivelle had an amazing season in the goal during his first campaign as Chadwick’s starting goalie. Wesley constantly frustrated teams with rock solid efforts, constantly holding teams to low goal totals, giving our offense the ability to finish games. Junior big men Bryan Renslo and Jack Kirkpatrick held down the middle of our offense all season, playing the most grueling position in the pool, Two-Meters. Their combined efforts and physical strength, that led to many goals scored and ejections drawn, constantly created match-up problems for other teams. Sophomore starter J.B. Anderson contributed all season long with his smart play, heady defense and near-perfect passing to really give our team depth and strength from every position in the pool. Juniors Chris Stanton, Duncan Day and Tomo Ohkubo provided a constant spark of energy and experience coming in off the bench to help our team in every way imaginable all season.

The season included a tuff non-league schedule where Chadwick faced, and defeated, many of the South Bay’s biggest and strongest schools. Wins against Peninsula, El Segundo, Redondo Union, Torrance, and Santa Monica helped propel Chadwick into this year’s CIF-SS playoffs with a lot of momentum and confidence.

Chadwick travelled to Palm Desert where it took on perennial powerhouse La Quinta in its first round game. The Dolphins escaped the desert, leaving behind only a stunned and silent crowd, with a 10 – 6 victory. The Dolphin’s next playoff matchup was against divisional favorite and senior heavy Bonita. On a dreary, rainy Saturday the Dolphins fought hard, executed its game plan, and never gave up, but ended up dropping the contest and bowing out of the playoffs in the quarter finals.

Everyone involved in the program, from the kids to the coaches to the parents, had an amazing year. Everyone had fun, enjoyed success, and learned more about the sport and themselves. Thanks to our seniors, Matty Gallas, Blake Range, Drew Von Bergen, Sam Farrell and Omar Khulusi for all your dedication and success over the years.

While we are losing an amazing class of seniors we look forward to another successful year in 2012. Chadwick had an amazing Junior Varsity season, which will certainly make the transition from this season to next smooth and successful.

Junior Varsity

This has been another successful season. With 26 players strong both varsity and junior varsity players showed up to practices with positive and energetic attitudes. Each player showed a tremendous amount of improvement from the beginning to the end of the season. Along the way they had a good time! As a result, the team earned the Prep League title with an undefeated record of 10-0. The girls continued to learn the importance of staying focused and persisting through tough matches. Winning two matches against Flintridge with a 9-9 tie and winning on games proved they have the tenacity it takes to be strong competitors. Along with winning league, several girls earned All-League awards. Second Teams Singles went to Maddy Sung and Montana Morgan. First Team Doubles went to Madison Webster and Ally Melideo; and Christina Ling and Kate Paulsen. Second Team Doubles went to Lauren MacHarg and Alex Nguyen-Phuc. The First Team Doubles teams will also represent the league to CIF Individuals at Whittier Narrows on Friday, Nov. 19. I would also like to thank our Booster Club Reps, Karen Melideo and Annie Webster, for all of their hard work this season. Without you and all of our other parents, we would not be where we are today. Here's to more good tennis next year!

13

Our season’s theme was all about working to do what was best for the team. Warm up shirts carried a quote by Phil Jackson, which read,

“The strength of the team is each member……. The strength of each member is the team.”

I am proud to say that this 2011 team took that quote to heart and battled for one another each set throughout the season. On record, we were not an undefeated team, but our efforts and tenacity, as a team, could not be defeated. In late August, Chadwick competed in the Queens Court Tournament in Anaheim. At the end of the two-day tournament, played in stifling heat, the team defeated every opponent they met and finally defeated Windward School to win the crown as the Division II Champs. Our season, and league opening win against Pasadena Poly was the match that showed the girls what was in store for them if they competed with positive energy and team spirit and drive. In September the girls had a good showing in the North High Tournament with a second place finish, losing to Bishop Montgomery High School. On October 11th Pasadena Poly defeated us. Although experiencing a tough loss, the team regrouped and rekindled the “fire in the belly” which our lone freshman, Jillian Parks, reminded us was missing. Team Chadwick repeated their first place finish at our own Halloween Tournament and finished the remainder of the season without a loss. Throughout the season, the girls were ranked high in the top 10 polls and finished the season as the #1 seeded team for the CIF playoff rounds. Each member of the squad contributed to the success of our season, which culminated in the girls earning the title as the 2011 Division 3AA CIF Champions, again defeating Pasadena Poly. We headed off to State playoffs as the #2 seed and the team earned a chance to compete in the Southern California Regional finals. After a tough battle and losing to a great team we were the runners-up. The girls are the first in the volleyball program to make it past the second round and this honor can never be taken away from them. What a great season and what a great way to represent Chadwick athletics. Personally, I would like to thank all of the girls for their unwavering trust and willingness to meet the standards set forth for them. I appreciate their enthusiasm and drive to become the best they could be. I value the leadership provided by the returning players and how well the newcomers fit in right from the start. To Emily and Isabella, thanks for being great captains and for all of the little things you did to remind us that we were a team. Congratulations to Abbe Holtze, Sarah Lucenti, and Emily Newton who earned All-Prep League First Team honors and Kristen Parks and Sarah Gurbach who earned All-Prep League Second Team honors. All of our love to the seniors, Erin, Eliza, Skylar, Lizzie, Madelyn, and Sparkles (Isabella.) You will be missed and will be difficult to replace next season. On behalf of the team, I would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to “The Troops.” Their harmless but humorous and spirited antics, costumes, and cheers were greatly appreciated. We valued their support, but most importantly, they made it FUN to come to volleyball matches. Finally, I would like to thank our Booster Reps, Lisa Popovich and Clare Gurbach. Thank you to all of the parents who signed up to help in some way throughout the season with the Spirit Game, Senior Day, the banquet, photos and DVDs, sweatshirts, celebratory dinners, snacks, and the support that was given to all of us. A special thanks goes to my daughter, Lindsay, who shared with the girls her love of the game and competitive drive. She was a definite asset to the program and was instrumental in our success. The girls' frosh/soph volleyball team finished with a record of 5-11 this season. The team improved throughout the season and had a great win at Rio Hondo by pushing through the third game and getting the W. The team was led by six sophomores: Aleena Qazi, Courtney Rawda, Sam Kunianski, Becky Lytle, Vanessa Contratto, and Danielle Price. Eleven strong freshman rounded out the squad: Adrienne Alvarado, Jordan Long, Rachel Chait, Lindsey Waller, Charlotte Wallace, Natalie Redington, Ashley Williams, Emily Hemingway, Tori Jackson, Jillian Solberg, and Leslie Escalante.

The girls JV volleyball team finished the 2011 season on a high note. With the team battling illnesses and absences during the middle part of the season, it wasn't until the end of the season that the team was able to establish a good rhythm and finish by winning three of its final four matches. The team finished the season with a 7-9 overall record and a 5-7 league record. The team featured a cohesive mix of girls from all classes. Seniors Amy Carlsen, Crystal Ciaramitaro, Jamie Li, Nalani Wakinekona, and Rachel Young brought great leadership and steady play to each match. Juniors Allison Apfel, Kyla Brooks, Isabella Gradney, Catherine Kurtz, Molly Rowe, and Nikki Stein brought aggressive hitting and consistent defense all season. Clarissa Cervantes and Sam Klaassen , the small but strong sophomore contingent, did an impressive job at libero and setter, respectively. Last but not least, freshmen Mary Dawson, Elly Holtze, and Meg Knox impressed with their play in matches and their enthusiasm during practice. The girls became a unified group quickly and supported each other well all season. Most played multiple positions in order to develop individual skills and learn to share the court as a team. That development was the main reason the team finished the season strongly with victories over Webb, Westridge, and Flintridge Prep, and, in the most entertaining and well-played match of the year, the season-ending loss to Mayfield. All the girls should be congratulated for their fine season. Well done!

Cheerleading Head Coach Leslie Miller

Cheer had a very exciting football season! Our Marvelous team captains: Isadora Plasencia, Letetsia Fox and Shelby Crawford lead the team through one of the most successful football seasons. The team’s half-time routine performed to “Party Rock Anthem” and “On The Floor” was a real crowd pleaser with a “kick-line” and the “CHS” spelled out with their new metallic pom-poms. The team also added a stomp routine which included a cheer created by our director of multiculturalism Jasmine Love and a mini dance choreographed by Letetsia Fox to “All I do Is Win.” The most famous cheer every season is the “Senior Cheer,” which the Captains create themselves for the senior football players, not an easy task with 18 senior guys! The Cheer team also made it to other sports including: Girls Tennis, Boys Water polo and Girls Volleyball. No challenge too big for the team, they worked hard to decorate the stands for both the Senior and Homecoming Games, not mention braving the elements in the Mojave Desert. The team had a festive “Cheer Spirit Day,” which included the varsity football team serenading them and presenting them with roses followed by a reception after the game. Coach Miller would like to thank the girls for the great dedication, sense of humor and most of all their amazing Chadwick spirit. Go Dolphins!!!

Morgan Geller jumping her horse, Fabricio.

Chadwick's equestrian team has been competing in the Orange County Interscholastic Equestrian League (OCIEL) at The Oaks in San Juan Capistrano. Chadwick’s eight English riders and one Western show against some of the best equestrians in Southern California. These riders come from over 50 public and private schools from Palos Verdes to San Diego. The competitions take place over two days, and are held monthly from October through January. Divisions (Varsity, Junior Varsity, Freshman and Novice) are based on jump heights and difficultly of courses for the English riders and ground work -- walk, trot and canter -- for the Western riders. Leading the way for Chadwick in the varsity ring is veteran rider Morgan Geller (12). Other returning riders this year include Alex Klaassen (10), a junior varsity rider who is having an outstanding show season; Michelle Geller (9) and Adam Krieger (9), western, who also have taken blue ribbons for Chadwick; and Lindsay Tong (10). The team is rounded out by its newest members: Tess Koo (7), junior varsity; Holland Stevens (7), freshman division; Gemma Geist (7) and Katherine Pratty (8).

Team members include:

In order to recognize, support and foster the

continued growth and success of our many talented

athletes, we are very excited to announce four new

developments in our growing College Athletic

Information program.

First, we now have posted on the website a

comprehensive list of young alumni who are playing

varsity sports in college. It’s an impressive list, because

in some years almost 20% of Chadwick seniors go on to

play varsity sports at the college level – and that doesn’t

include other students who participate in club sports

and intramurals. A list of these students can be found

on the website at

http://www.chadwickschool.org/page.cfm?p=473.

(Note: If you are aware of someone who we have

inadvertently omitted from the list, please let us know!)

Second, you will also find on the website a

great new video that highlights just a few of our alumni

athletes talking about their experience playing sports at

Chadwick. Seeing and hearing these exceptional young

men and women truly validates the investment we have

made – and continue to make – in developing our

sports programs and facilities at Chadwick. You can

check them out at:

http://www.chadwickschool.org/page.cfm?p=5149

Third, we have recognized the need to better

educate our student-athletes on the process and

mechanics of transitioning from high school to college

sports. While the recruiting process gets very specific

to each sport in junior and senior years, there are

general guidelines all athletes should follow prior to

that point. Even if you’re not yet sure what your

college plans will be – or even if college seems a long

way off – it’s helpful to have a sense of the process. The

Booster Club has pulled together this information in a

“College Athletic Information Guide.” The guide

includes helpful links, a sample athletic resume and a

sample letter that a student might send to a college

coach: http://www.chadwickschool.org/page.cfm?p=470

Finally, our annual “College Information

Night” is scheduled for January 9th, 2012. We are

planning a great evening with a panel of Southern

California athletic coaches ranging from Division 1 to

Division 3. This is a unique opportunity to hear from

and ask questions of the “experts” regarding the

recruiting process. We would encourage you to read

the “College Athletic Information Guide” before this

event so that you have a basic understanding of the

process. This event is appropriate for anyone from 7th

to 11th grade who may be interested in college sports.

Look for additional information about this event in future “This Week at the Wick” announcements.

Alumni Athletic News -- Highlights of Recent

Accomplishments

Alumni News Highlights of Recent Accomplishments

Former Chadwick cross country and track team member Lucas Lebovitz ’11 won the 5K at the annual Palos Verdes Peninsula “The Hills Are Alive” race in September, while alumnus Scott Rodilitz ’09 won the 10K. Lebovitz is a freshman at Amherst College where he is on the cross country and track teams. Rodilitz is a junior at Williams College where he is a standout runner. Kurt Buchbinder ’10 helped his Princeton University Tigers take third place in the NCAA water polo championships (behind only USC and UCLA) on Sunday, Dec. 4, 2011 at UC Berkeley. Christen Press ’07 was named Women’s Professional Soccer (WPS) Rookie of the Year for 2011. She played professionally for magicJack. A Stanford alumna, Press also won the prestigious Missouri Athletic Club Hermann trophy in 2010. Co-coaches Lindsay Drennen ’01 and her mother, Chadwick physical education teacher and Head Girls Volleyball Coach Anita Drennen, joined forces to propel this year’s girls varsity volleyball team to its highest post-season ranking in Chadwick history. As noted previously in this newsletter, the girls won the Prep League and CIF Southern Section for the second consecutive year. They then moved on to regional competition, where they took second place behind eventual California State Champion Cathedral Catholic High School of San Diego. Rebecca Smith ’99 captained the New Zealand National Women’s Soccer Team in last summer’s World Cup, scoring a goal in the 90th minute against Mexico that earned New Zealand its first World Cup point. She also represented New Zealand in the 2008 Olympics in Beijing. Smith plays professionally for VFL Wolfsburg in Germany. (Read Rebecca’s interview in the upcoming issue of The Compass.)
