year at the Ursuline, students are given the opportunity to become leaders

in a specific area, ranging from the arts and public speaking to teaching

and learning.

This year, we have lots of applications from students to become Junior

Librarians. We currently have a small team of students who will work to

promote the Learning Resource Centre and reading in general, while

clubs, writing book reviews for the newsletter and creating display

boards. I want to say a Big ‘Thank You’ to all the girls who have helped

with the running of the LRC.

NOUGHTS & CROSSES by Malorie Blackman

Noughts & Crosses is a series of young

adult novels, by English author Malorie

Blackman, including three novellas, set in

a fictional dystopia. The series describes

an alternative history in which African

people had gained a technological and

organisational advantage over the Europe-

an people, rather than the other way

around, with Africans having made Euro-

peans their slaves. The series takes place

in an alternative 21st-century Britain.

“Noughts and crosses is one of my favorite

dystopian novels of all time, and I would

recommend it to ages 12+.”

A student life in books

MY FAVOURITE BOOK AS A

CHILD WAS...Eragon by Christo-

pher Paolini. His writing technique

is flawless as he grips the reader

within the first few words of the se-

ries.

THE LAST BOOK THAT

MADE ME CRY

WAS...Legend by Marie

Lu. It is the first of a dysto-

pian series based on the

future and what may hap-

pen in a totalitarian society.

MY FAVOURITE CHARACTER FROM A

BOOK IS...My favourite character of all time is

Cassia Reyes from the Matched series by Ally

Condie. The main female protagonist is a

strong- headed and determined young woman,

who will do anything to rise up against evil to be

with her loved ones.

THE BOOK THAT GOT ME

THROUGH A DIFFICULT TIME

WAS...The Handmaids Tale by

Margaret Atwood. It made me

realise that while life is bad and

sometimes unfortunate, it can

also be a lot worse.

THE LAST BOOK THAT MADE ME LAUGH WAS...The

City Of The Beasts by Isabel Allende. The main character has a truly amazing ad-venture and there is also a second book filled with more hilar-ious and hair-raising tales.

THE ONE BOOK EVERYONE SHOULD READ IS...

A Series Of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket

as the tale of the Baudelaire orphans is one that

shocks readers to the core while also marvelling at

how they manage to get past their troubles.

Year 11 student, VERONIQUE, shares the reads

that have shaped her life so far

KS3 Book Club Our Book Club takes place in the library every Monday

after school 3.15—4pm. We are currently reading Terror Kid by Benjamin Zephaniah.

‘Rico knows what trouble is and he knows to stay away from trouble as best he can because if there is one thing he has learnt, it’s that he will always be a sus-

pect.’

The girls are really enjoying this book and take it in turns to read aloud. We pause every now and then to discuss what we think. It is a relaxing and fun club.

The BookTrust has just sent us five of the best new books that offer great scope for discussion and activi-

ties. Which one shall we pick first?

The Dog Runner by Bren MacDibble

Lightning Mary by Anthea Simmons

Race to the Frozen North by Catherine Johnson

Ghost by Jason Reynolds

Looking at the Stars by Lewis Hine

His Dark Materials is an epic trilogy of fantasy novels consisting of Northern Lights (1995, published as The Golden Compass in North America), The Subtle

Knife (1997), and The Amber Spyglass (2000). I t follows the coming of age of two children, Lyra Belacqua and Will Parry, as they wander through a series of parallel universes. An adaptation of this wonderful Trilogy is currently being shown on BBC1 but do you think the books are better? Isla in Year 7 certainly does. She is watching the series and now reading the Trilogy for the second time as she loves it so much!! If you’d like to try the books, please come to reserve your copy now.

If there is a book you are really keen to read and it’s not available in the LRC please come and tell the librarian
