Madi Hastings
Laser Cut Quilts
Madi grew up at odds with the quilting world, and having spurned her mother's best efforts to domesticate her with sewing classes and needle-
turn applique´, it seemed there was little hope that she would ever be caught at a sewing machine again.
Her mother, a self-declared utilitarian, was not a frequenter of craft stores, but on one miraculous day, she dragged her teenage daughter to the fabric store. Madi couldn't stop staring at the fat quarters.
However, it wasn't until 10 years later, when she married into the Hastings family and met her awe-inspiring, quilting mother-in-law and began laser-cutting textiles with her husband, Andrew, that her heart opened once more to needle art.
She now designs applique´ patterns and fabrics in her spare time, and runs her company, Laser Cut Quilts, that manufactures and whole-sales laser-cut quilt kits for quilt shops and fabric distributors. She is fond
of wool applique´, embroidery, and half-square triangles.
Program admission is free to BBQ members and $10 per program to non-members

Threading the Needle - Meet our Past Chairs Catherin Pickerill , Chair
Kathy Webb-Bettger
Past Chair of Boise Basin Quilters’ 1990-1991
I was BBQ Chair in the early ‘90s, the year after our lovely show at the Idaho Historical Society. That was the show where we wrote an elaborate program with the stories of each quilt. Since then, we have learned to post “The Quilters Story” right next to the quilt on the wall. Somehow it takes less time.
For our first shows we borrowed antiques to make a room setting to display quilts. Very labor-intensive, but lovely.
We did not do a show every year in the ‘90s. I love the way we are doing it now.
Chris Bell
Past Chair of Boise Basin Quilters 1991-1992
I was fortunate to start quilting at almost the same time that I joined BBQ. I had done every other textile craft since childhood. My maternal kin, Great Grandmother, Grand-mother and Mother, all helped and guided me to embroider, knit, crochet, sew, needle-point and weave potholders.
Later, my husband and I lived in Knoxville while he finished his education and I found the Student Union’s arts and crafts department where I discovered weaving. Note there isn’t a mention of quilting in this checkered history. Never came up.
When I joined BBQ I was a blank slate, and the Guild built the quilter I have become. Open to old and new ideas, techniques and challenges, I took classes, Guild workshops and belonged to two smaller quilting circles, one of which is still thriving…Friday Nooners.
I had just joined BBQ when I got a telephone call from Crane Johnson asking me if I’d take a job doing something about documenting quilts. I said “sure?” and that started me on a path that would educate me about every quilt that showed up at the many quilt registration events the Guild sponsored. I had no idea…no idea…what I was doing but I kept my ears and eyes open, and I learned a lot. The women who were involved before I came on board were wonderful, and I am still grateful to them to this day.
I still quilt and belong to Friday Nooners. I’ve quilted wherever my family has traveled since this train left the station. I’ve been a part of other Guilds, helped to start one that still exists in Arizona and I’ve taught quilting. I confess, I’m not totally faithful. I’ve picked up a few extra habits along the way, silver-smithing, beading and paper arts are just a few. There is always quilting lurking somewhere and under-laying the foundation of all I do.
Many of my friendships are because of quilting, and I’m grateful to each and every one of them and you for embracing me all these years.
The Grateful Threads quilting group made a quilt for Boise Police Cpl. Kevin Holtry who was shot multiple times last November as officers searched for a suspect in a Boise Bench neighborhood. Cpl. Holtry was paralyzed and lost his left leg below the knee as a result. Marilyn Himes
was able to present the quilt to Cpl. Holtry on August 15, 2017.

2017 “Winter Gifts” Quilt Show
By all accounts, the 2017 Quilt Show was a success! A lot of thanks to all the volunteers who help make the show! Your help, as always, is invaluable. With the start of October, there is a changing of the guard. I have chaired the Quilt Show Committee for the last two years and hope that you approved of the changes that were implemented. While challenging at times, it was a rewarding experience. As I take on the role of Past Chair, I will finish the projects that I have started. One of the projects that has been in the works is an online entry system. We hope that it will be up and running for the 2018 Quilt Show.
Taking on the reins as the new Quilt Show Chair is Joann Hopkins. Joann takes over with the October Board Meeting and will lead the Committee until next September. There is a wonderful group of ladies to help support her effort in moving the Quilt Show forward and we hope you will be one of them. Janae Bissinger 2017 Quilt Show Chair
Quilt Show Committee Needs You! With the new Quilt Show year, some committee members are stepping down to allow other members the opportunity to get involved. New committee members allow for newer ideas, so please get involved. The Quilt Show Committee is looking for few volunteers for the following:
Some of these positions will be full time and others start involvement a couple of months prior to the show. If any of these positions interest you, please contact
Joann Hopkins at 208-468-8704 or [email protected].

2018 Quilt Show Theme – “Celebr-18”
The Quilt Show Committee approved the new theme for 2018. It’s “Celebr-18”, a play on 2018 and ties-in with the Quilters’ Runway theme of Celebration. As always check Facebook or our website for updates and current events.

Oh my goodness! The weather changed drastically, which chased me back into my sewing room, and my pile of UFOs, that have patiently waited all summer long, as I enjoyed the outdoors and the warmth. I discovered a couple of things that I had started last winter, but had totally forgotten about. Does anyone else have this problem?
We had a GREAT New Member Coffee Hour in September! Catherin Pickerill, Joann Hopkins, and I had the wonderful privilege of meeting 13 of our newest members, and OH WHAT TALENTS they bring to our Guild family! We also got to check out a quilt that a new member made and brought to share. We had an amazing time at Strongline Espresso, and they were wonderful sponsors. Thanks so much! Our next New Member Coffee hour will be held on
October 12th, from 3 to 4pm at the Roastere´. I hope to see you there!
As we delve into the activities of fall, and begin to get ready for the holidays, I want to express my thankfulness and joy that I get from each and every one of you! You all, (yes, even those of you I haven’t met yet) fill my soul with your creativity, your exper-tise, and your love for what we do!
Enjoy football, comfort food, our Quilt Show, but most of all, feed your spirit, your heart, and our special project bins with love, caring and QUILTING!
As always, if anyone has any questions, concerns, or news, (especially our new members), feel free to email me, call (please leave a message) or shoot me a text.

HINTS and TIPS from our Membership
This month we are launching our new Q&A column. All members are encouraged to participate. Let’s share our knowledge, ideas and best advice!
The names of all members who participate will be placed into a drawing for a prize at the next Membership meeting. You do not need to be present to win. You do not need to include your name, but we can only enter you in the drawing if you do. This month we are asking about thread...
1. What is your preferred thread for machine and/or hand quilting? Brand and weight?
2. What is the best thread for applique´? Hand and machine?
3. Which thread do you like best for piecing?
Please share your quilting related questions, answers, advice, suggestions and best tips to [email protected]. You can ask, answer or offer as many tips as you like, but we may not be able to include them all.

WHAT ABOUT THE MINIATURE WINTER JOY QUILT???
For the last few months we have been dropping really big hints about our plans for the miniature reproduction of our Winter Joy raffle quilt, and the plan was unveiled at the September BBQ Membership Meeting. For those of you who were unable to attend here are the details:
At the October Membership Meeting we will sell raffle tickets to MEMBERS ONLY for the miniature quilt. Tickets will be 6 for $5.00 or $1.00 apiece.
Tickets will be sold ONLY AT THE OCTOBER MEETING* so mark your calendar for Thursday, October 19th, with a big $ sign so you’ll remember to BRING MONEY! Plan to stay for the whole meeting, because YOU MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN.
Pretty simple. And we know a BBQ member will be a winner! Good Luck!
*Members of the Quilt Show Committee and the BBQ Board will be allowed to purchase tickets at their monthly meetings before the Membership Meeting

Outreach, continued on Page 7 Connie Emmen
Autumn is here, bringing with it Veterans' Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas. While you're buying those beautiful holiday fabrics for your projects and gifts, share a smile with someone else doing the same thing. Maybe you'll start a new friendship when you invite someone to a BBQ Membership Meeting. There is a $10 non-member charge for attending the program, so $35 to join is a great deal -- all the meeting programs, plus access to the library, first chance to sign up for Schoolhouse classes, Block of the Month, Special Projects, Quilts for Kids and lots of opportunities to help with the Quilt Show and Outreach programs.
Disaster Relief Project
So many are in need, in our nation and our near-by neighbors. The short-term need for water, food, money and housing persist, but soon, as people start rebuilding their homes and lives, they'll need every-thing, and that's when we can do the most good by donating quilts. At the October meeting, we'll be collect-ing new or clean, gently-used quilts -- crib 27"x52", twin 65"x93" or queen 86"x93" -- to donate to disaster relief wherever they're most needed. Please...no smaller than a crib size, and no larger than a queen...functional (as opposed to decorative). Outreach and Special Projects will work with bona-fide relief organizations to ensure your donations go to the people who need them most. In September, BBQ received a donation of 13 completed quilts to get the project started, so let's keep it going in October and beyond. If you made a quilt for “Prepare a Spare”, this would be the perfect time to donate it. We'll put our label on each one, so make sure your donation is one BBQ can be proud to put its name on. Contact Connie Emmen,
[email protected] or [email protected] or 208-336-9919 if you have any questions.
Quilts of Valor
We had lots of visitors to the Quilts of Valor booth at the Quilt Show, some that knew everything about QoV and just wanted to see your donations on display, others who wanted to know where they could donate red-white-and- blue tops or completed quilts, and still others who wanted to know how to nominate someone to receive a QoV.
The presentation of the quilt, donated by Huckleberry Patches to Gov. Cecil Andrus' daughter, Tracy, was beautiful and moving for everyone, who had squeezed together around the QoV booth to observe. Through her tears, she told the onlookers how pleased her father had been, when asked to receive a Quilt of Valor, and how extra special this particular quilt is, because it will always remind them of their family gatherings at their cabin in Cascade.
The Gowen Field Air Force Honor Guard presented the colors to open the QoV award ceremony where four veterans -- two served in the Korean conflict, one in WWII and one in Viet Nam -- received quilts to thank them for their service.
A quilt or quilt top to be donated to Quilts of Valor should be about 60"x80" (a little larger or smaller is okay, but this is the best), made of red-white-and-blue cottons (pre-washed to release any excess dye; it's so sad when a completed quilt bleeds!). Avoid prints that resemble explosions, and avoid patterns that resem-ble our flag. Use cotton backing and cotton or cotton blend batting. Connie Emmen will accept quilt tops and quilts at any BBQ meeting. Please include backing and batting 6" wider and 6" longer that the quilt top (that's 3" on all sides), if you can.
The 2018 Quilts of Valor National Sew Day will be February 3, 2018. Mark your calendars to join us at Idaho Sewing & Vacuum, in Meridian any time from 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. to make red-white-and-blue blocks that will then be used to make QoVs. Watch the newsletters in November and January for complete information.
To nominate someone to receive a Quilt of Valor, visit http://qovf.org, click the “Take Action” tab at the top, select “Request a Quilt”, fill in the form, and click “Submit”.

Celebrate Halloween and Harvest
Halloween Fun Pinwheel
Halloween is a time of celebration and superstition. As the days grow shorter and the nights get colder, people continue to usher in the winter season with gatherings, costumes and sweet treats. It’s time to sew up a “sweet treat” in the Halloween Fun Pinwheel. It’s an easy paper-pieced block or a pieced block. Instructions are provided for 8” and 12” blocks.
Pun’kin Seeds
October is one of my favorite months. I am always reminded of harvest. I have wanted to try this pattern for quite some time, as the combined “petals” remind me of pumpkin seeds. I always thought this was a faux “Cathedral Windows” design, but after looking on line, it appears to be more of an “Orange Peel” design. This is a quilt-as-you-go pattern. (R. Long, October 2017).
Be sure and start your project now for next year’s Quilters’ Runway section at the Quilt Show. Find the instructions with pictures for these fun blocks on the “Members Only” section of the website.
Thanks,
Pat Kluckhohn (288-4295) Rita Long (375-1267)
Show and Tell Barbara Derby
At the September Membership meeting, we had only six quilt projects shared. The quilt show started the next day.
Remember to pick up your pictures that have been taken of you and your quilts at the monthly meeting.
This is one of the many perks of being a Boise Basin Quilt Guild member.
School House M aureen Stevens
We are excited to start our School-house classes for the year. Our first class is titled “Building Blocks” and will be held on Saturday, October 21, 2017. We are about half-filled so be sure and come by the sign-up table at the Mem-bership Meeting to reserve your spot.
It will be a fun and informative class with lots of hands-on experience. See below for a description of the class. The supply list can be found on the website or get one at the table when you sign up.
We will also be taking sign-ups for “Quilting the Landscape Quilt” with Carol Lohrenz on November 18, 2017. Come by the table and check out the details for that class.
Building Blocks
Most quilt blocks are made up of different design el-ements. I have identified the 12 most common de-sign elements (such as half-square-triangles and flying geese) that when combined, make up almost all quilt blocks. Once you know how to make these design elements you can create original, one-of-a-kind blocks or make almost all of the quilt blocks in the public do-main. In class, we will learn and explore several dif-ferent methods to making most of these design ele-ments. I will have numerous handouts and patterns for making some simple blocks using these design ele-ments. Come and join me, Maureen Stevens, for a fun time and a great learning experience.

News from the Quilts for Kids Project
We started this year with a big bang. We received 35 quilts last month at the September meeting! That is a tremendous kickoff to what will hopefully be a great year. However, to keep the Quilts for Kids Project alive, we need your help with the following:
* Staffing the table at the Membership Meeting. * Quilting donated finished tops. * Binding donated quilted tops. * Sewing labels on finished quilts prior to donation. * Delivering quilts to local hospitals. * Assembling kits from donated fabric for the BBQ Membership Meeting. Writing a monthly newsletter article.
Assistance may not be needed every month, but on an as-needed basis.
If you can help out with any of the above, we'd love to hear from you. Please email Phyllis Kizer at [email protected] or stop by our table at the next meeting.
The Silent Auction block
for September was Ohio Star
These are the updated totals of our ongoing projects:
Case for Smiles Pillowcases: 66
Chemo Caps: 10
Pretty Pockets: 78
Neck & Helmet Coolers: 11
Porta Cath Pillows: 52
Adult Clothing Protectors: 13
Christmas Stockings: 125
All of the patterns can be found under “Special Projects” on the BBQ website. The Christmas stock-ings will be delivered to the Blue Star Mothers so they can fill and ship the stockings to the deployed servicemen and women for the holidays. Thank you!!
Ann Swanson's Scrappy Puppies quilt is currently on display at the downtown branch of the Boise Library!
I know how much you all have appreciated receiving the Robert Kaufman donated flannel fabric. We will (finally!!) be using up the remaining bundles this Guild year and will be working on new incentives to use in the drawings to thank members for turning in their completed special projects.
Sharon Koelling, Judi Schroeder and Barbara Ptaszek were winners at the September Guild meeting.
Thank you to everyone who has participated. Without your help, we would have nothing to deliver!
Thanks go to my special projects team,
Sharon Walen, Gail Vaughan and Susan Pirrong!
Outreach, continued from Page 5
Adult Clothing Protectors (ACPs)
BBQ donated 13 Adult Clothing Protectors to Tomorrow's Hope after the September meeting. Thanks to everyone who took a Bronco ACP kit to bind — make sure to bring them back to the October meeting so the developmentally disabled youth and young adults served by Tomorrow's Hope can join Bronco Nation, too. Please use bias binding on the ACPs you make. Bias binding goes around curves smoothly, avoiding the unsightly puckers and pleats caused by straight-grain binding.

Ends for Friends
Doreen Moran filled her car...again...with your donated pet beds - YEA! It's so heart-warming to see BBQ members continuing to support this project, to make cats and small dogs a bit more comfortable as they wait to find their forever families, and take their beds with them as something familiar, when they settle into their forever homes. Two fat quarters make the perfect size bag; fill it one-half to three-quarters full with small (4") scraps of batting, fabric, and thread, sew up the 4th side and you've made the perfect pet bed. On behalf of the critters and their caretakers… meow, yip and thank you.

Get to Know the BBQ Website – “Community Outreach” Page
Continuing our tour of the BBQ Website, the three banners at the top of the HOME PAGE appear on all pages. On most of the website pages are links to both subscribe to the BBQ newsletter and Member Login to access member-only information.
This month, we take a look at “Community Outreach,” where we find out more about all of the projects the Guild is heavily involved in. By clicking on each category, you will be immediately taken to a page that will give you information, as well as many photos, regarding each project.
The “Quilts for Kids Project” describes the history of the Quilts for Kids, where the donations are made, the preferred sizes of the quilts, scheduled “sew days,” and who to contact for more information. The “Quilts of Valor” section that discusses the purpose, quilt requirements and contact information. The “Special Projects” area details projects not really quilt-related, but items that fill another need such as adult clothing protectors, chemo caps, neck and helmet coolers, Christmas stockings for Servicemen and women, just to name a few. This area also includes instructions and patterns for download.
As part of our education outreach, “Our Quilts on Display” details member quilts currently on display at the Boise Library. Under “Education Outreach,” educational opportunities (other than “Schoolhouse” classes) will be posted here as they are scheduled. The “Special Events” area is where one-time special events can be posted such as the “Barn Quilt” display sponsored by the Desert Sage Quilters in April. Several BBQ members submitted quilts for this display.
If you have any questions or suggestions, please don’t hesitate to send an email to
Membership Sandy DeMent
Photos will be taken from 6:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the October 19th Membership Meeting. Solid-color tops are suggested. Retakes are available, and you can approve your photo the same night. We are encouraging all members to include their photo in our Membership Directory. It is helpful to everyone to be able to put a face to a name. The Directory is strictly available to and can only be seen by fellow Guild Members. Membership Cards and holders will be available to all paid members at the October 19 th meeting, and they can be picked up in the back of the Hospitality room. Renewing members, PLEASE turn in your old card in its plastic holder to receive your new card. You will keep your lanyard for use again this year.
The Membership committee has had a busy couple of months, with members renewing and we are so pleased to be welcoming over 40 NEW members!
Let’s all be sure to look for those newbies who may be standing alone or looking confused, and offer them a smile, greet them with a warm “hello and welcome”, offer to assist with any questions and even invite them to join you for the evening activities. We all remember the intimidation of our large group with so many activi-ties, during our first visit or two, and it is never fun to sit alone! We all know each other and where everything is, but our new members and guests do not. Let’s take care to make sure everyone enjoys the evening as much as we do.
Speaking of NEW MEMBERS, many of our brand-new members have stepped right up and volunteered for some positions that were available and many of them eagerly volunteered at the Quilt Show. What a great way to get involved in the Guild’s activities and to get to know other members!
If you or someone you know wishes to get more involved or simply want a way to get to know some of our wonderful members, contact our Chair, Catherin Pickerill or our Vice Chair, Sharon Culley to find out what volunteer opportunities are available. There are still a number of committees that need your help. Our Small Group Chair, Linda Murphy will be happy to assist you with finding a small group that will cater to your personal interests or check our Small Group List on Page 10.
My personal thanks to all of the great volunteers who assisted me in the Membership booth at the Quilt Show. They did a great job of informing visitors about the Guild, inviting them to attend meetings and to consider joining us. Joann Hopkins, Laura Lee, Chris Klover, Louise Maley, Sandy Duncan, Sue Norton, Kathy Mello, Peggy Clark and Sharon Culley. Thank you so much! Sandy D.

Old quilt for sale that is in quite good condition
My German grandmother helped my mother make it. It was made in the area of 1934 or 1935.
I am almost 81 and the quilt was made before my birth.
The back of the quilt is solid yellow; the front is yellow and white, and the ties are yellow. The pattern is Dresden Plate.
I am asking $275 or best offer. I am happy to answer any questions you may have.
