Student Learning Update

Students in the BBCHS Transitional Support Program recently applied key vocational skills as they worked together to build and paint bird-houses. After taking nearly 50 or-ders, the students built them by hand with the help of classroom paraprofessional Shelley Alcorn and her father Fred Alcorn. Once they were built, students painted the

houses with whatever designs were requested by the buyer. “We had an assembly line process in our class and each student used their own tal-ents to take charge of a part of the process that they excelled at,” wrote teacher, Freddie Dudek. The TSP program is part of the BBCHS spe-cial education program. It is focused on transitioning students from an

alternative setting so that they may be successful at BBCHS.

Congratulations, Mark Sutton, Aman-da Croix Patzke and Tony Shoemaker, the 2016 BBCHS Hall of Fame Induc-tees. Mark earned eight varsity letters as the starting QB in Football, a starting guard in basketball, and was a school record holder in the pole vault while competing in track and field. He con-tinued his athletic career in track at SIU. Following his collegiate career, Mark returned to Bradley Bourbon-nais. For the next 33 years Mark served as a teacher, coach, athletic director, and was a pioneer in the state of Illinois in bringing athletic training to the high school level. Amanda earned six varsity letters in basketball and swimming. She set three individual BBCHS school rec-ords in swimming as well as being part of two school record relay teams. She qualified for the IHSA State Championships in five different events. While at Carthage College she set four individual school records and was part of five school relay records. She won a National Championship in the 50 yard Freestyle. She was voted Carthage College’s “Female Athlete of the Year” three times. Tony earned eight varsity letters in football, basketball and track. At the time of his graduation Tony held five track and field records in the 100 and 200 yard dash, the long jump, the 330 low hurdles, and the 440 relay. His 100 and 330 low hurdle records set in 1975 have not been broken to this day!

A Step Ahead

Bradley-Bourbonnais Community High School is proud to once again offer the summer academic pro-gram: A Step Ahead to help stu-dents reach their educational goals. The program is two-fold and offers students course work for advancement and credit recovery. It is divided into two sessions that correlate with the semesters of an academic year. All classes are filled on a first come, first serve basis. Please contact Mr. Guerin at (815) 937-3707 ext. 6018 with ques-tions regarding summer academic programs.

Registration is open to all BBCHS students beginning March 1st and non-BBCHS stu-dents on April 12th. Registration forms and brochures are available in the BBCHS Counseling Office, the Student Affairs Office and on the BBCHS Website.

Summer Learning at BBCHS

The BBCHS Fast Forward pro-gram is a three-week summer pro-gram designed to help incoming Freshmen increase core subject skills, improve study habits, and establish relationships in a more relaxed atmosphere. Invitation to the program is based on eighth grade MAP, Discovery-ED and rec-ommendations from feeder dis-tricts.

Proven Success

Students who participate in the Fast Forward program average a .34% higher GPA, 3.4% higher daily attendance and less than one referral. They are also 13% more likely to participate in a sport or activity.

Session Dates

On February 2, several BBCHS stu-dents won first place at the World-wide Youth in Science and Engi-neering (WYSE) Regional Competi-tion at Kankakee Community Col-lege.

The following students brought home top honors: Grant Dexter, Math; Eileen O’Gorman, English; Tegan Hansgen, Biology; Adam Schroeder, Chemistry and Physics; and Garrett Kremer, Computer Sci-

ence. Hansgen and Schroeder were also awarded a scholarship from the school.

The WYSE Competition is spon-sored by the University of Illinois. It is divided into four divisions, based on school population. Each student that competes is required to take two tests from the follow-ing category options: math, Eng-lish, chemistry, physics, biology, computer science or engineering graphics. The BBCHS WYSE Team will com-pete again at the sectional compe-tition on March 17th at North Cen-tral College in Naperville.

Student Success Update

On January 29, 2016, four students from

BBCHS participated in the Illinois Music

Education Association Conference. Mad-

di Denault, Jordan Ritter, Griffin Keber

and Allie Schweigert were part of the

ILMEA District 3 Choir.

Students first auditioned for the choir

earlier this year. The rigorous audition

process requires students to prepare five

pieces as well as scales and triads and

sight-read a line of music they have nev-

er seen before. After they have per-

formed, students’ scores are tallied and

ranked and the choir is selected based

on these scores.

On January 29th, Denault, Ritter, Keber,

and Schweigert traveled to Illinois State

University to rehearse with the newly-

BBCHS Students Named to All-State Choirs

formed choir, consisting of students

from District 3. Directed by a guest

conductor, the groups prepared a con-

cert to be performed at the end of the

day. After the concert a committee

met to form a choir that represents

top singers from each of the nine dis-

tricts from throughout the state of

Illinois. The top singers were then di-

vided in half: half go to the All-State

Choir and the other half to the Honors

All-State Choir. Jordan Ritter was a

member of the Honors All-State Choir

and Griffin Keber and Allie Schweigert

were members of the All-State Choir.

Maddi Denault was one of 26 singers

chosen to be part of the All-State Vo-

cal Jazz Ensemble.

BBCHS Students Shine at SWSC Art Exhibition BBCHS student artists were selected

for the SWSC Visual Art Exhibition.

Students attended a festival day at

Governors State University on Febru-

ary 5th where they viewed the exhibi-

tion, voted on student choice awards,

and worked with GSU art professors

in various art-making work-

shops. Congratulations to the follow-

ing BBCHS artists: Cheyenne Kozuch,

Ronnie Wozniak, Maura Orvis, Madi-

son McMullen, Alexandra Sterk,

Jeffrey Wurster, Josie Stone, Jenna

Howard, Lauren Buschek and Sidney

Bradley.

Musicians Impress at Orchestra Night

Each year, BBCHS musicians

perform with Bourbonnais Up-

per Grade Center strings. Fol-

lowing a group rehearsal, dur-

ing which 130 total musicians

from both schools prepare two

songs to perform at the con-

cert, students gather for a din-

ner sponsored by the Orchestra

Boosters Club. The concert fea-

tures performances from the

7th and 8th graders as well as

several from BBCHS musicians

including, Concert Orchestra,

Symphonic Strings, and the

Symphony Orchestra. Part of

the program features all string

players from both high school

and middle school playing two

songs together. This year’s Or-

chestra Night was an impres-

sive display of student talent

and collaboration.

BBCHS Students and Staff Volunteer at Community Event

Several BBCHS Science Depart-ment and Fine Arts Department students volunteered their time and talents at the Pledge for Life Family Fun-a-Thon on February 7th at Olivet Nazarene University. The event, attended by thou-sands, was sponsored by the Iro-quois-Kankakee Regional Office of Education and raised money for I-KAN’s substance abuse pre-vention programs. BBCHS sci-ence and art students hosted two of the most popular booths at the event: face painting and ice-cream making. “It’s important for me to get my students involved in our commu-nity and make a contribution with their time and talents,” not-ed BBCHS teacher, Mrs. Bretzlaff. Art Honor Society stu-dents, led by Bretzlaff, organized the face painting booth. Students from National Honor Society and various art classes volunteered by painting the faces of young at-tendees.
