Can This Put You In Control Of Your DNA? Community News

May is that month in which people either

stop procrastinating and really try to

reach their fitness goals by summer or

they give up on the New Years resolution.

When the warm weather hits, it’s so easy

to excuse yourself from hitting the gym

and say to yourself, “I’ll get my exercise

outside by working the garden, walking the dog or playing with

the kids.” It’s a trap we have all fallen into and the guilty

pleasures of those hot summer days take their toll and before

you know it, the kids are back to school and you are feeling

guilty about the weight you packed on. Trust me, I’ve seen it.

Every fall we hear the same thing.

I’m not saying that you can’t have fun. All I’m getting at is that

if you have been working hard over the past few months, don’t

ruin it for yourself. Think about a maintenance plan. So you

have lost 10 or 15 pounds and that’s fantastic, if you know you

won’t be coming to the gym as often, then the only other tool

you have at your expense is keeping your nutrition in check.

Hollay, one of our senior trainers, is here to do just that. She

will be launching our Nutritional Services department and arm-

ing you with extremely simple but not well know tools and plans

to keep your hard earned weight loss in check. Just like coming

to the gym had to become a force of habit, so to is developing a

sound nutritional plan.

Don’t sabotage what you have already accomplished. Hollay

will be offering a FREE dietary

analysis for as limited period

of time. You’ll be pleasantly

surprised at how a simple

strategy will pay off in more

weight loss even though you

may be spending less time at

the gym. Spots will be limited

so keep you eyes peeled for

details coming soon.

overall health. Here’s how you can get started and do just that: Fish oil—as you saw from the study I told you about earlier, supplementing with fish oil tells your genes to switch on the bodily processes that reduce inflamma-tion and hardening of the arteries. Fish oil is rich in omega 3s that have the potential to do this. Shoot for 1,000—3,000 mg a day. Resveratrol—This is the active antioxidant found in red wine and grapes, and is responsible for all the healthy-heart benefits. It turns out part of the reason it’s good for your heart is because it tells your DNA to do so… Your heart has around 1,029 genes that change as you age. Research at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has found that resveratrol counteracts this change 92 percent of the time. [2] It’s recommended you take 200 mg per day to get the health benefits. Vitamin B12—This powerful vitamin has been shown to extend the life of your DNA… by lengthening your DNA’s telomeres. Think of your DNA as a shoelace… the telomeres are the plas-tic “cap” at the end of the shoe lace that makes tying them easy. This cap, or telomere, determines how quickly you age. The shorter the telomere gets, the quicker you go downhill. By lengthening the telomere, you extend the life of your cells, ultimately giving you a longer life-span. Take 100—500 mcg per day. You aren’t necessarily stuck with the cards you’ve been dealt. You have SOME control over it. Taking the supplements mentioned here would be a good start. It would also be a good idea to add in exercising and making healthy food choices too. After all, if you don’t think twice before you decide to eat some junk food... it could impact your waistline, and your genetics! References:

How to Grow

Younger As You Age 3 Ways To Reverse the Aging Clock…

1. Build more muscle. Whether you’re a man or woman, building muscle on your body (and keeping it) will help you stay younger—even as you age. That’s because you natu-rally lose 3 pounds of muscle every 10 years. Counteract this and give your body no choice but to keep the muscle by strength training regularly. The hormonal benefits from weight lifting can also keep you young due to the release of growth hormone. 2. Stop free radicals in their tracks. One of the “aging accelerators” science has known about for decades are called free radicals. They’re found everywhere (in your environment, food, etc.) and cause cell oxida-tion, inflammation and breakdown of healthy

tissue… contributing to the effects of aging. Put a stop to this aging process with powerful antioxidants. Great ones to supplement with are vitamin C, resveratrol, and vitamin E. Research has also shown that drinking 2-3 cups of green tea can also help in the fight against free radicals. 3. Learn to relax and conquer worry. All health fac-tors aside, nothing can age you more quickly than con-stant stress and a worried mind. Learn to let go and re-lax to not only add years to your life, but to enjoy them in style! Start a meditative practice… and learn to live in the present moment by letting go of past worries and future stresses. Also, make sure to get enough sleep. Too many folks these days are sleep deprived and that only makes you more susceptible to stress and worry.

Mother’s Day What your mom DIDN’T tell you…

1st Mother’s Day. The day was founded by Anna Jarvis on May 10, 1908 and it was made into a national holiday in 1914 by President Wilson.

122.5 million phone calls. That’s the av-erage number of calls made on Mother’s Day to let mom know how much she means to you!

Mother’s Day cards are popular. So popu-lar that 50% of households give Mother’s Day cards… totaling around 152 million cards that are given out.

2 minutes, 5 seconds… the diaper-changing speed of the average mom.

63 years old… that’s the age of the oldest Mom on record, having given birth to a baby boy in Italy in 1994.

Could Optimism be the Secret to

Living a Longer, Happier Life?

Recent scientific research now confirms the secret

ingredient to a longer life—an optimistic attitude. And

there’s even better news...anyone can learn to be more

optimitic.

A Dutch study found that optimistic people live

longer; in fact, almost 30% longer than pessimists. Sci-

entists found an increased risk of cardiovascular dis-

ease, heart attack, stroke, and weakening of the im-

mune sys-tem associated with pessimism.

Researchers at the Mayo Clinic, reporting on a 30-

year study, found that optimistic people live about 19

percent longer than pessimists do.

These findings come from studying 839 people liv-

ing in Minnesota. The researchers found people classi-

fied as “optimists” had significantly better survival

rates. Optimists were less likely to develop depression,

sought medical help when needed, and took better care

of themselves.

So how can you become more optimistic? Here are

six tips for becoming a more optimistic person:

1. Set Specific Goals. A study of happy people found

they set goals and consistently take action.

2. Project A Cheerful Voice. Research has shown

people feel the emotion they are acting. Use a positive

voice.

3. Use Positive Language. Use upbeat words: oppor-

tunity, challenge, recharging, success, can do, solution.

4. Practice Good Posture. Optimists have good pos-

ture, stand tall, walk briskly, and take big steps.

5. Focus on Solutions. When a difficult situation

comes up, focus on the solution, and put it into action.

6. Be A Role Model. When you act as a role model for

your co-workers, employees, family, and friends,

you’ll become more optimistic.

Just by applying these six steps to your life, you can

change your thinking, and reduce your risk of physical

illness and live a longer, and more fulfilling life.

SPECIAL MOTHER’ DAY HEALTH INSERT:

Nutrition Support For Every Stage Of a Woman’s Life

Women 20 to 35

Though women at this age may be healthy overall, they generally experience higher levels of stress compared to older women. During this demanding phase in life, getting the right nutrients and making sure that energy levels meet expectations are crucial. This is “the age of prevention” when it comes to skin care. Start-ing a good skin care regimen now is essential to helping reduce the appearance of fine lines down the road. Acne can still be a problem at this age, while too little sleep, too much alcohol, and smoking can dull skin. Don’t forget the sun protection. Too much sun now can set the stage for skin cancers for all types, including melanoma.

Women 50 and Beyond

Maintaining strong bones, preserving healthy joints, and promoting heart health a major concerns. It’s im-portant that the body is supplied with proper nutrients to help prevent osteoporosis and heart disease. At the same time, a woman’s skin has matured. Cell turnover now takes twice as long as at age 20, making skin look dull. Skin has become thinner and more prone to wrinkles and drooping, while years of sun exposure can make the skin tone uneven.

Women 35 to 50

As women enter their 30s, they begin a slow ending process of their reproductive years, known as perimeno-pause and menopause. Since each woman is unique, the duration and intensity of menopausal symptoms var-ies. Scientific studies have shown that, along with a healthy diet and lifestyle, consuming phytoestrogens (plant estrogens ie: Red Clover) may reduce the symptoms of menopause. These are also the decades when laugh lines and crow’s feet begin to appear along with a double chin. As skin-firming collagen and elastin begin to break down, skin starts to lose its firm, supple texture.

ARBONNE Recommends

FC5—Face, Body, Hair Innovative Swiss skin care featuring fresh cell tech-nology where vital cell phytonutrients are encapsu-lated until they are applied to the skin by keeping them intact, pure and potent.

Blend of 5 fruits and vegetables which preserves the youthful radiance of healthy-looking skin through beneficial hydration, cleansing, exfoliation and mois-turization plus UVA and UVB protection.

Key Botanicals: Kiwi, Strawberry, Carrot, Mango, Pumpkin

This month is a month of gratitude—a time to either give or receive thanks (depends if you’re a

mom!) on Mother’s Day.

And while this month is an excellent reason to practice being grateful, why not be grateful all the

time? It can make you happier. In his book “Thanks!” Dr. Robert A. Emmons describes a 10-week experi-

ment he carried out with three groups of people. He found that turning thankfulness into a daily practice in-

creased overall happiness by 25%!

What’s more, folks not only reported being happier but also more optimistic about their futures, felt

more satisfied in their lives and even exercised 1.5 hours more a week than those folks who didn’t practice

gratitude. That’s not bad for something that may only take 5—10 minutes out of your day.

So this month, make sure to be grateful on Mother’s. But also challenge yourself to make the entire

month, a month of gratitude… and see if anything good comes out of it. It’s my sneaking suspicion that

something good will come out of it… but you’ll have to try it for yourself to find out. Thanks for reading,

and please—sit back, relax and enjoy this month’s issue of Richly Rewarding Living!
