St Michael and All Angels Parish Church,
Bodenham
Bodenham was known in Saxon times as “a rich man’s
village” and the residents in this well favoured setting
along the banks of the River Lugg have tried to maintain
this description of their wonderful buildings down the ages.
There are some clues that Bodenham was intended to
become grander than just this lovely village in the Lugg
valley; such as the unique lantern which today adorns the
church. It was thought that this was originally intended to
grow into a handsome spire. However, just like today
finding money for improvements and maintenance of the
church was not an easy task for Bodenham’s residents.
The Parish Church of St Michael and All Angels was originally constructed circa 1200
and altered and extended in the early 14th Century with further alterations late 14th
Century to early 15th Century. The chancel was rebuilt and shortened circa 1750 and
the Church was restored in 1835 and again in 1890-91. The ceiling of the chancel is
noteworthy for its beautiful ribbed vaulting.
Today, this beautiful Church again needs to fund restoration works. Whilst some
funding will come from outside sources, significant contributions need to come from the
Church itself. All donations from the Bodenham Open Garden Weekend will go directly
to the Church so that this wonderful building will remain at the centre of the village.
Refreshments and Stalls
Refreshments and toilet facilities will
be available at St Michael and
All Angels Parish Church.
There will also be stalls selling an
interesting variety of local produce,
gifts, cakes, cards, plants and handicrafts
