Bob’s Blog
(a word from Kew on Yarra
President Bob Lambert)
Tonight is the first Board Meeting for the New Year
In terms of the conduct of Board Meetings I plan to continue with the pattern set in
Matt’s time i.e. Board meeting Nights will be for Club business and so there will be
no Guest speaker. Instead we will hear reports from Directors about the current
issues in their directorates and members are encouraged to discuss these issues.
Matters arising from these will be discussed at the Board Meeting after the Club
Meeting, and resolutions will be brought back to the Club.
We had planned a visit from AG Bob Slater tonight but this has been deferred to
next week to fit in better with the mentoring Workshops currently underway. I am
sure you will all make him very welcome next week. A reminder to Board Members
that we will be meeting earlier with him next week for those that can make it.
In terms of Club Business, Justin Wibrow has volunteered to run a Brand workshop
tonight where we take time out to refocus on who we are, what we stand for, and
what makes us different from other clubs and charities. This will become our unique
Brand and link in with our new name and image, so we look forward to this.

Directors’ Report – David Shave – Club

- Fellowship – Oakes day and Cup day
functions this year with Bob Lambert’s
birthday falling on Cup day; 23 Oct –

Directors’ Report – Ed Brown – Community
Service – activities include:
- Guide Dogs Victoria – one day’s work
remaining, Ed to organise this week-end;
Small working bee at Camcare required;
Rotary at Work – desire to lift Rotary’s profile
should be balanced against community needs in planning for next year; Bunnings Hawthorn would support a desk in
store to promote Rotary Membership; Bunnings are precluded from supporting any building projects because of
liability concerns; blood pressure testing will continue to be organised by William Lieu.
Directors’ Report – Anne Brown – Youth Service – priorities include: RYLAH – 24-30 November, candidates being
sourced by David Shave and Justin Wibrow ; NTSF – applications close 10 August; Glenferrie and Kew on Yarra RCs
to work together to support mental health training for teachers in Boroondara.
Directors’ Report – Isabel Armer – International Service – Nepal progressing well, but for an issue in transferring
funds – being addressed; candle making going well and further funds will be committed.
Presentation on Rotary Club Branding – Justin Wibrow
Canvassed views from the floor on what we stand for/why do we matter – people who make a difference in the
community, 21st century club, contemporary, modern, informal; if we don’t do it, who will?; we get it done; useful;
we do what we say; add value; enjoy what we do; welcoming; competing with other clubs for members; current old
fashioned image; competing with other NFP institutions who may be more vibrant, active; a “family” feel in our
club, not big, no silos.
How would we like to be seen in a year’s time?– community minded, not elitist, enjoying what we do, a leader in
the Rotary community
Brand insistence – Awareness, Accessibility, Value, Relevant differential, Emotional connection were also briefly
discussed. A working party will be put together to map out a brand strategy for club consideration

Bob’s Bad’un
A dero walks into a pub.
The Publican says “Can I get you a drink?”
“Yes” says the dero “I’ll have a double scotch”
The bartender pours the drink and sets it down whereupon the Dero picks it up and downs it with one gulp.
“That’ll be $11.50 sir” says the barman, but the Dero says he hasn’t got any money, so the barman get very angry.
A guy at the bar says “Excuse me, I am a lawyer and this man does not owe you any money. When he came in you offered to get him a drink and he
accepted the offer. There was no implied commercial transaction.”
The bartender kicks both of the out yelling at them to “Never darken my door again!”
Next day the dero is back. The bartender screams at him “I told you yesterday to never darken my door again!”
The Dero says “I’ve never been here before in my life!”
Bartender says “Well you must have a double then!”
“Thanks says the dero I’ll have a scotch!

President’s Announcements
There are a couple of activities of note which may interest members.
1. Boroondara is running a Volunteers Expo on the afternoon of Wed. 24th
July and Glenferrie Club has asked the other Cluster Clubs if we wish to
combine in putting together a stand. I would like to see if we can do this as
we need to show we are willing to work together with our cluster clubs and
this is consistent with our desire to present a highly visible image of Rotary
to the Community. We may use our newly printed tent if I can find out how
to set it up. Notice is short and if anyone is able to assist next Wednesday
please let me know.
2. On Tuesday 13th
August there is a Public Climate Forum being held by
“Lighter footprints” and promises to be a very interesting meeting
( especially for a climate Sceptic like me) I will hand around the Brochure –
see also the Bulletin.
I have also received some communication from District about Confidentiality and
reiterating its policy on confidentiality. This arose from some correspondence
where one member circulated a wide list of emails across everyone’s desk and
the resultant complaints that were received. Key to this correspondence is the
requirement that email addresses be kept confidential by using the BCC feature
(Blind Carbon Copy). If anyone needs help setting this up just Google BCC and
you will get instructions. We will post a copy of this policy on the Website for a
short time for members to review.
We have received the costs from District and so Tony, John and I have prepared a draft
budget for the coming year. Included in the district levy is a fee of $20 per head for the
Conference. Despite the increased Levy and the expected increased costs from our Name
Change it looks like we can hold dues to the same level as last year.
