Boat security based on machine vision
Abstracts :
A people counter is a device used to count the number of pedestrians walking through a
door or corridor. Most of the time, this system is used at the entrance of a building so that the
total number of visitors can be recorded. People counting system is important for marketing
research (pedestrian traffic management, tourists flow estimation) or in security application (in
the case of an evacuation, it is essential to know how many people are inside the building at
any given time). Some sensors are used to count people in a building with different advantages
and drawbacks and different accuracy such as laser beam, infra-red sensor, thermal sensor and
recently video camera.
Boat accident :
At least 103 people were killed and dozens are still missing after an Indian ferry capsized in the
Brahmaputra River in stormy weather on Monday.
The steamer was carrying more than 300 passengers and was caught in a storm midstream ataround 4. 20 p.m in Assam state, northeast India.
Times of India r eported the accident as being one of the worst ever boat tragedies in the state of
Assam with 103 bodies so far recovered.

CBS News reported that nearly 150 passengers who had been on board the ferry swam to the
shore or were saved by rescue teams. Almost 100 people are still missing, however. The accident
is believed to have been caused by strong winds and rain. The bad weather also hampered
communications in the area.
Reason For accidents ;
The Economic Times stated that the ferry was designed to carry only 225 people as against the
350 passengers who were on board when the boat capsized. Their report says hopes of finding
more survivors among the missing passengers are now dwindling.

People counting :
Computer vision
Computer vision systems typically use either a closed-circuit television camera or CCTV camera
to feed a signal into a computer or embedded device. Some computer vision systems have been
embedded directly into standard CCTV cameras. This allows for distributed, cost efficient and
highly scalable systems where all image processing is done on the camera using the standard
built in CPU.
Accuracy varies between systems and installations as background information needs to be
digitally removed from the scene in order to recognize, track and count people. This means that
CCTV based counters can be vulnerable to light level changes and shadows, which can lead to
inaccurate counting. Lately, robust and adaptive algorithms has been developed that can

compensate for this behavior and excellent counting accuracy can today be obtained for both
outdoor and indoor counting using computer vision.
GSM module :
Here we using GSM module for sending the detail of that boat to govt sector without trouble,
boat details means – boat license plate, or any of data given by govt sector.
