A meeting during the day would not be a problem with advance notice.

My defanition of a Classical Education - Teaching students how to learn and how to think. By pursing the why, how, and who of ideas and decisions in addition to the what, this gives the framework for students to fully understand and speak knowledgeably on topics and actually produces great discussion within the upper school.

Daily, in my business as a consultant, I influence, direct, and motivate people to learn, think through processes, and make decisions based off of my guidance. For instance, A client that just opened their location this week, spoke to me several months ago about IT and not knowing what they needed. I made a referral to a business partner in the IT/Network industry as he was the best choice that I could refer. The client kept pushing off speaking with my contact and it came back up again, this need for help with the network. Finally they made the call and got a demo and they were SOLD right away. By knowing the right contactI was able to set my client up for success.

I have worked with teams in various capacities throughout my career. In a previous position, I worked with the team to do software research and then implement the software of choice after many months of testing and comparison of options. This was a team effort as we all had different levels of knowledge and experience in the industry, but we had one goal, to find the best platform for the business. We achieved that.

Conflicts are not always easy to handle, especially when you are involved directly. As a parent and wife, I have certainly had my fair share of conflicts to handle. I try to look at all sides of the situation when dealing with a conflict. Sometimes you have to shut out the noise and get to the root of why someone is really mad. Often once you get to the root, the conflict can be easily addressed and often the party who was upset realizes that they were wrong for getting so upset. For instance, my son and his best friend got into a fight. My son was hanging out with another neighborhood friend and his best friend said some very mean things toto him and the other boy. My son was very upset and didn’t get why he was being so mean. After a discussion, it came about that his best friend was jealous of him spending time with someone else. Now, if we hadn’t taken the time to find out WHY he acted like this and get to the root of the feelings that caused the action, we would not have had a resolution, but we would have had friends who stayed mad at each other because of actions - that weren’t meant to hurt the other.

Personal truth for me is my faith. My personal belief in God helps to define the standards by which I measure myself.

Bullying is when someone seeks to harm, intimidate, or coerce someone. This can be done through verbal attacks, physical harm, or even in written form.

9. Do you think the observations of a teacher regarding a student in the classroom should be the

primary information considered when consequences for behavior are determined?

10. What is the role of customer service in a K-12 public school of choice?

Given these hypothetical situations, what is your instinct about resolving the dispute?

11. A parent has an important role in the community and has difficulty upholding their parent

contract when their presence is required in the disciplinary process at the school. Are exceptions

to the contract appropriate under special circumstances?

12. A student is suspended for having a cell phone on campus, but say they forgot the phone was in

their backpack. Their parent says this is unfair, since the parent gave the child the phone for

after-school safety purposes. What do you think is the right decision regarding the

consequences for violating an MCA rule?

13. Parents: Please describe a situation where you had to resolve an issue at MCA and what you

learned from that experience. (DO NOT INCLUDE NAMES.)

14. Teachers: Please describe how you resolved a student/parent issue in the past and what you

learned from that experience. (DO NOT INCLUDE NAMES.)

Yes, the teacher that was in the classroom at the time of the incident is the first source in the determination of consequences.

Customer Service exists in many industries. In the area of K-12 education at a charter school, there should be a balance of serving the families that attend the school, but also keeping the main goal or mission in mind. In customer service, when there is an issue, the person wants to be heard - and I mean really listened to and understood. Bringing this level of service to the parents and student-body can help bring the school satisfaction rate higher - because people feel heard and considered - even if they don’tget their way all the time. Finding common ground or a compromise in situations where it doesn’t take away from the mission or go against policy, brings a win - win. We can’t be all things to all people, but we can establish a good role of conversation and there by help parents and student “buy in” into what the school is doing.

The parent’s involvement in the student’s situation is vital and should not be bent for someone who has an important role. If you bend it here, where would the compromise end?

The MCA Handbook does not give allowances for a phone to be off for after school purposes. The consequences for violating the rule of having a phone at school should fit with the history of the students disciplinary record. If this is not the first time with a phone at school, the punishment should start with detention and removal of privileges or even have the parent come in with them to school. Further if the behavior continues a suspension is warranted. As the demerit system gives an escalation, so should other infractions Again, this would be based off of the students history/disciplinary record, as no student is the same.

I have had several situations over the years at MCA where I had to go to the teacher. In most cases the teacher resolved the issue. I have also spoken to the Principal and that meeting also resolved my questions/concerns. The situation where I met with the Principal was quite the story around school and I needed tohear it all straight from the head because what was being said didn’t make sense to me. It in fact wasn’t quite correct. It was filtered through their own thoughts, past, kids explanations, and their own rules/values.What I have learned as a parent, is that the students explanation isn’t always completely factual and it is often based off of their young perception of the situation. What I have also learned is that other parents explanation isn’t always completely factual and it’s often based off their past experiences and perception of the situation. It is important to gather the information from both sides and put it together to decipher what happened and why.
