Condolenses Dr. William George Stevenson, devoted hus-band and father, passed away peacefully at his home Thursday July 9, 2009, surrounded by his family, following a valiant battle with cancer. Bill was born Feb. 22, 1924 at St. Luke's Hospital in Seattle, the eldest son of Harry and Charlotte Stevenson. Raised in what was then small-town Bellevue, he attended Bellevue public schools en route to what became a life- long career in education. In 1942, Bill graduat-ed from Bellevue High School, where he was elect-ed class president, student-body president, and was a member of the debate team and honor society. An Eagle Scout, he was also a three-sport athlete, letter-ing in football, basketball and baseball. Bill attended Washington State University for one semester in 1942 before enlisting in the U.S. Ma-rines in Jan. 1943. He served in the south and central Pacific, and was honorably discharged in 1946. On April 20, 1946, he married Betty Jean Wood, a for-mer WSU classmate. Together, they attended San

Jose State, where each graduated with a bachelor's degree in education in 1949. Bill then attended the University of Washington, where he earned his mas-ter’s degree (1955) and later his doctorate (1968) in education.

Bill was hired as a teacher by the Shoreline School District in 1950, commencing a 32-year career with the growing district. As a school principal, his steady demeanor, sense of fairness, wisdom and leadership abilities continued to gain respect. In 1962, Bill was named Superintendent of Shoreline School District, a position he held for 20 years until his retirement in 1982. Bill later served two six-year terms on the Washington State Board of Education, was president of the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), and also president of the Washington Association of School Adminis-trators (WASA). A firm believer in community in-volvement, he was also a member of numerous pro-fessional and civic organizations. After "retiring," he continued to educate the public, leading a team ef-

fort to produce a book, "Shore to Shore, Line to Line," about the Shoreline School District's history from 1944 to 2004.

Bill spent his last four years as a devoted caregiver for his wife Betty Jean, who died in November 2008. A month later, he was diagnosed with stomach cancer, fighting it with the same grace, dignity, and courage he exemplified throughout his life. True to form, his last words focused on others. He told his children: "I have so many people in my life I want to thank." He is survived by his daughter Jody Thornton (Gary), son Rick Stevenson (Julie) of Richmond Beach; sister Marilyn Carlton; brother Robert Stevenson and four grandchildren and nu-merous nieces and nephews.

Robert Magnus THORSTENSON, Sr. Passed away peacefully with his entire family by his side. He had survived Parkinson's disease for over three decades but succumbed to side effects of a fall relat-ed to his long term illness. The grandson of Iceland-

ic immigrants, he was born to Ella and Laugi Thorstenson on Decem-ber 23, 1931, in Vancou-ver, BC, which was the closest hospital to their home in Point Roberts, Washington. He was ex-tremely proud of his Ice-landic heritage.

At the age of 13, his fa-ther was severely injured

in a tractor fire and Robert (Bob) took over manage-ment of the family farm for the entire year. He grad-uated from Blaine High School in 1949 and after two years of service in the Navy attended the Uni-versity of Washington, where he was Co-Captain of the Husky Crew team and graduated in 1956. Upon graduation he was employed as a commercial purse seine deckhand as well as a tender operator before embarking upon a career in the commercial fish pro-cessing business. From 1959-1964 he rose from as-sistant cannery Superintendent in Petersburg to Gen-eral Superintendent of all Alaskan operations of Pa-cific American Fisheries. In 1963 he married the love of his life, Pamela (Martens) Thorstenson. Once Pacific American Fisheries decided to sell it's operations in 1965, he formed a group of fishermen to purchase the Petersburg Alaska plant, naming it

Petersburg Fisheries, which was later to become Ici-cle Seafoods. Upon the sale of Icicle in 2007, 62% of the company was owned by its employees and the rest by management and several of the original in-vestors.

Mr. Thorstenson believed in giving back to the community and was involved as Chairman of the Petersburg School Board, Chamber of Commerce and he was appointed by 4 different US presidents to the International Pacific Fisheries Commission (where during his service the 200 mile limit was ini-tiated). In his later years he served on the board of the Nordic Heritage Museum and co-produced 7 commercial fishing videos with his friend John Sa-bella. In 1992 he was named Northwest Fisheries Association Man of the Year and in 2009 he was honored by the United Fishermen of Alaska as one of the initial inductees into the Alaska Seafood In-dustry Hall of Fame.

Bob enjoyed listening to classical music, singing, puttering in his garden, and maintaining relation-ships with old friends and making new ones. Mr. Thorstenson is survived by his wife of 46 years, Pamela of Shoreline, Washington, his children Bob Jr. (Gina) of Shoreline, Washington, Tani (Leif) Stenfjord of Shoreline, Washington, Peder (Kathleen) Thorstenson of Stafford Oregon, and his twin sister Sylvia Thorstenson Schonberg.

Mr. Thorstenson was a quiet doer of good deeds and he lived his life to the fullest, helping thousands of people in the commercial fishing community of Alaska and the Pacific Northwest. He was a living example of the axiom that "actions speak louder than words".

Innis Arden Board Meeting August 11, 2009

The meeting was called to order by Innis Arden Presi-dent Mike Jacobs at 7:10 p.m. Board members attending: Mike Jacobs, Dave Fos-mire, Harley O'Neil, Pat French, Bob Allen, Brian Bra-nagan and Kathi Peterson. Absent: Shannon Martsolf and Rick Leary. President's Report - Mike Jacobs: The Club received a check for $56K in the Tronsen matter representing partial payment of attorney's fees and fines. The Club has a motion pending to have a receiver appointed to oversee the cleanup of the exte-rior and interior of the house. In Carlson I, the Club has a motion pending to have Judge Mertel re-assigned to the case for purposes of ruling on the mo-tion for an order of distribution of funds to satisfy the judgment. The Club's attorney, Mr. Eglick, is closely monitoring the City's proposed Tree Preservation Or-dinance which will be discussed at the September 3rd Planning Commission meeting. Interested Innis Arden residents are encouraged to attend the Planning Commission meeting and address the members. Vice President's Report - Dave Fosmire: The VP reported that the Compliance Committee re-ceived two new petitions in August. The Compliance Committee consisting of the VP, Bob Allen and Kathi Peterson then conducted its meeting on four petitions received in July. The Committee determined there was sufficient basis to process the petitions further with Board hearings. The Branagan v. Henry, O'Neil v. Romvari, and the Marchisio v. Soderling matters will be heard on September 9, 2009 in the Clubhouse. The Hollinrake v. Pederson matter will be heard on October 14, 2009. The parties will be notified of the hearing dates. The Hansons have brought their trees into compliance as requested by the Board. Grounds Report - Kathi Peterson and Judy Allen: Four Innis Arden entrance sign locations have been verbally approved by City of Shoreline. We are wait-ing to get a City of Shoreline permit in hand. The Neighborhood Mini-grant we are applying for is expected to be approximately $4000 in Septem-ber. Free chips to control vegetation growth will be deliv-ered to the 15th Ave N.W. side of the play field by Kurt Carlson Darrin French is scheduled to have his landscape crew working at the Innis Arden entrance, removing

dead debris gathered together by an Innis Arden vol-unteer group. The group was headed by June How-ard and Judy and Bob Allen. They worked for 4 hours during one of our recent very HOT Saturdays. Thanks to their hard working group of volunteers, they cleaned up a very needy area. Darrin plans on renting a chipper which will make wood chips which his crew will spread around the main entrance area to keep weeds down. B & R Report - Bob Allen: Helland, 17714 17th Ave NW, garage addition. Ap-plication approved 7-0. Palmen, 18233 13th Ave NW, remodel. No applica-tion has been submitted to the Building and Remodel chair. The completed application deadline is 25 days prior to the Board meeting at which it will be consid-ered. Reserves Report - Rick Leary: We are still working with the city to resolve the ero-sion issues in Eagle Reserve particularly with the Akers/Harrington Property that is adjacent to lower Eagle Reserve. There have been some complaints about how the maintenance crew is performing. We already have a draft of a vegetation management plan. I will revise the vegetation management plan to focus on mainte-nance issues, maintenance intervals, and mainte-nance procedures. I will try to have a draft available for general review by the October Innis Arden Board Meeting. Treasurer's Report - Pat French: The bank balance at the end of July was 328,904, with the breakdown of a) checking and savings at 191,336 and b) our reserves at 127,567. We did receive 56,839 from the Tronsen matter, for penalties and reimbursement for a portion of our legal expens-es. With the exception of legal bills, the expenses YTD in aggregate are within budget for 2009. Registered letters were mailed out in July to past due shareholders. The lien process will begin this month on those past due. Clubhouse - Harley O'Neil: Harley reported that income for the month of July was $2,800.00 and the expenses were $150.00. Work continues on the exterior of the Club House and should hopefully be completed by the end of Au-gust. A report came in that someone had hurt them-selves on a chair that failed. Mike Jacobs has been in contact with the person who was injured and we are looking into repairing the chairs or replacing
