BLUES CD REVIEW - by Brian “The BLuesman” BeachumROOMFUL OF BLUES 45 LiveAlligator Records ALCD 4955www.alligator.com

45 years of some of the finest blues on the planet, Duke Robillard, Ronnie Earl, Curtis Salgado and countless others in the band, numerous killer albums and CDs, and performances at blues festivals and concerts that blues fans will take to the grave -- that can only be Roomful of Blues! Their latest release, in my humble opinion, one of their finest, is 45 Live.

From the start, it is a great collection of jump and swing blues, one of their hallmarks. Chris Vachon, the current leader of the pack, put together a great set of tunes and also produced this disc. Kudos to Chris. Recorded at a three-day party back in March 2013 at The Ocean Mist Club in Matunuck, Rhode Island, the band kicked the walls out of the place and was captured on this CD.

Some of my favorites for download or listening from the entire CD are “Dressed Up To Get Messed Up,” “Straight Jacquet,” “Turn It On, Turn It Up,” and “That’s Right!” But you can pick your own!

The nice thing about this collection is that it spans the breathe of the ROB span of talent that has graced their band and graced us with their performances. It’s a must-have for any blues or swing fan. Place this CD in the player and have a trip back in time, a jewel of blues music and a house party -- all in one CD.

Interview with Jackie Scott by Jack CampbellWhere were you born? Born in Norfolk and raised in this area all my life.

Did you grow up in a musical family? My grandmother was a singer and used to travel a bit with a gospel choir. My daddy was a pretty good singer but never sung professionally.

Who were your earliest influences? My earliest influences were really people like Pearl Bailey, Ray Charles, Ruth Brown and Joe Williams. Joe Williams was one of Johnny Carson’s favorite musical guests and I would stay

up to see people like them whenever they came on television…you know, shows like “Merv Griffin” and “Dick Cavett.” My immediate surrounding helped me to develop a love of gospel music and then blues. Of course I listened to R&B and soul music growing up and throughout high school, but gospel music took me straight to the blues.

Who were some of the later influences in the music business? I loved the grit in Koko Taylor’s voice; I loved Nellie “Tiger” Travis’s stage craft; love Eddie Shaw’s songwriting and his ability to still blow a house down. It’s much more I love about each of them, but I always try to pick out something about every artist that stands out to me. I’ve seen many who may or may not be the best singers but are excellent entertainers and that makes for a great overall package. It’s all about having fun with the music and being entertaining to your audience…at least that’s what you hope for. Whether you’re performing or being entertained, you want to walk away feeling like you’ve had a great time.

Can you tell us about the Fernando Jones Blues Camp? The FJ Blues Camp was started by Prof. Jones, who was chosen to head up the first ever blues ensemble at Columbia College, Chicago. Columbia has a wonderful performing arts program and is the host for the camp in Chicago. I met Prof. Jones while understudying the blues in Chicago and he shared his vision for the camp. The passion he expressed and the effort Prof. Jones was putting in to make the camp happen is really what hooked me. There’s something about people who are passionate about what they’re doing that draws you in, and before you know it you’re working right beside them. I know what it’s like to be passionate about something and what it means when someone give you the nod and says I’ll help you out. That’s how I ended up in Chicago in the first place.

Prof. Jones holds auditions. Sometimes it’s in a Guitar Center, sometimes in an open call at the school, and more lately it has been as simple as sending in a video or a YouTube clip demonstrating their musical talents. Kids audition from around the country via the Internet, as well as in cities hoping to have a camp come to their town like we did here in Hampton. As a unit we depend on the business community and individuals who see the benefits of having a camp and the difference it can make in the lives of the campers. Each city is responsible for making an effort to raise the funds necessary to have a camp. The camp is free to all attendees, but as we both know every has a cost. I was so pleased to help bring the first FJ Blues Camp to my area and am looking forward to doing it again next year. As soon as one camp is over it’s back to the drawing board to raise money to make it happen again. I will be working very shortly with area parents, businesses and sponsors to raise the funds we need to make the 2014 camp just as successful as the Hampton camp was this year.

What are some of the highlights of your music career so far? Opening up for the Chicago Blues Festival in honor of Koko Taylor was definitely one of if not THE highlight of my career so far. Making the finals at the International Blues Challenge with the Housewreckers our first time at bat certainly ranks up there, as well as winning a Blues Blast Award for best new debut CD. And winning the Veer Music Award for 2 years in a row was equally as rewarding. Spearheading and producing the “Blues in the 757” Project that netted Eddie Shaw & The 757 Allstars’ Still Riding High CD was very special to me. Everything about it has 757 all over it. It was recorded in the 757 at Clay Garden Studios and all the musicians that played on the CD (except Eddie Shaw) were either born & raised here or live here now. It was the perfect vehicle to showcase a few of the many artists in this area that have been keeping the blues alive. It was also a great opportunity to pay tribute to the “Master Blaster” himself, Mr. Eddie Shaw, who was so generous with his time and talent to help promote blues and the musicians who make it happen here in the Hampton Roads area. The financial support I received from this area to get the project done was tremendous. This CD was nominated for a Blues Blast Award for best traditional blues album for 2013. Some of the 757 gang and Eddie Shaw will be performing at Buddy Guy’s Legends in Chicago on October 31st of this year...Hopefully we’ll bring home the prize!!

Do you have any advice for musicians of any age? Always remember that your gifts will make room for you. You don’t have to knock anybody’s talent or skill...let your “gift” speak for you and doors will open. If you’re lucky enough to have a door open for you, throw your foot back and keep it cracked open for someone else to come in behind you.

What does the future hold for you? Where do you see yourself in five years?I have absolutely no idea what the future holds for me and I’m quite sure I don’t want to know. I think the older you get, the less you think about what you’re gonna be doing 5 or 10 years from now. I’m taking the scenic route to 5 years from now. I’m sure I’ve missed a few things trying so fast to get here, so now that I’m here I’m gonna stop and smell a few roses I missed along the way.

BLUES DANCE - From the Juke Joints to your Local ClubWHAT IS BLUES DANCE?For most Blues lovers, you may often find yourself at a Blues concert just chilling out, enjoying the show, listening to the band create sweet music to wash away the problems of the day. And where there is music, there is dancing. Some people hit the dance floor and just sway. Some do the shake-your-booty shimmy. But others may move together in unison as one totally connecting to the music. That is called Blues Dance!

Now Blues Dance is much more than just dancing to Blues music. Since Blues itself is not only a genre, but a feeling, a style, a noun, a verb, an expression. It is unlike any other dance style. Blues music itself dates back to the late 1800s historically deriving from work songs from the Southern states. Turning it into its own American folk music style with playing, singing, and dancing about the happenings of the times. Good or bad. Blues is a style of music that has tested the trials of time.

The roots of Blues Dance goes back to the African tribal rhythms and movements combined with modern techniques into the dance you see today. Blues Dance is a term used to describe a whole family of dance styles that has had over a century to be redeveloped, reformed, and reshaped into today’s dance. It is also a reflection the listener’s natural reaction to Blues music. It may just start with the tapping of a foot, clapping hands, or simply moving rhythmically by yourself. But Blues Dancers take that natural movement and express intensity, with their own musical and emotional interpretation by putting the body into motion.

THE RETURNTechnically, it never left. But the Swing Dance revival in the 1990s prompted interest in other traditional Black vernacular dances of the early 1900s. And the current interest in Blues dancing is a result of this. Historically, Blues Dances were not considered a “social” dance or danced in public ballrooms mainly due to its sensuality and intimate ties to the dancers. The dances were mainly held at juke joints, house parties, rent parties, and any place they played the Blues. Thus, giving Blues Dance a more personal connection. Blues Dance still contains some of its original forms of improvisation, connection, rhythmic motion, and emotion.

Blues Dance techniques have strong ties to the Blues music itself. Combining simple features like the call & response conventions in the music composition, emotional intensity, and spirituality that is prevalent in Blues music. As long as there are variations of Blues music (Delta, jump, Dixie, folk, slow, fast, Chicago, Memphis, etc), there will be different styles of Blues dancing. Each conveying the feelings and rhythms each of region.

ART IMITATING LIFE IMITATING ARTBlues music is a reflection of one’s perception on life’s experiences and feelings which has the ability to connect to pretty much every person listening. Experiences ranging from love lost & found, financial hardships, spirituality, sadness, celebration, dreams, and aspirations. Each one of us can connect to some part of Blues. Blues Dance puts these experiences into the dance. Dancers often demonstrate the entire range of human emotions each one of us experience in life. These expressions range across musical styles and tempos also.

When you see Blues Dancers on the dance floor, it is much more than just dancing a set pattern. It is the connection between the dancers to each other, and also the connection to the music which is what the dancers are trying to achieve. Blues Dance allows one a chance to delve into our emotional history and to connect with people from all walks of life, to interact and to share a part of ourselves. Blues can express or release what one is feeling at the moment. More important, it’s what the music is says to each person. Some hear happiness, some sadness, some passion, and some joy. But most important, Blues Dance is a dynamic partnership between the dancers and to the music.

GET OUT & DANCESocial Dancing in general is a fun form of exercise that allows you to get out of the house, meet other people, spend some time doing fun exercise, and make new friends. But Blues Dancing is totally unlike other dance styles out there. Dancing to Blues Music is all about real life - the good, the bad, the ugly, and everything in between. Blues Dancing is the ultimate expression of one’s being.

In today’s Blues dancing communities, there are various notions about what constitutes true “Blues Dancing”. Blues Dancing today may range from traditional Blues dances to the shake your booty. But each has been adapted to suit the needs and interests of contemporary dancers.

DANCING ACROSS THE NATIONJust like Blues Societies, there are Blues Dance clubs across the nation. We encourage you to find more on Blues Dancing by finding your local swing dance club and take a class or two. We guarantee you’ll get hooked and have a new appreciation for Dancing the Blues away.

One thing is for certain, Blues Dance is a natural expression when listening to Blues music. As long as there is Blues music, there is Blues Dancing.

Blues At The Beach 2013 BandsThE gOLdEn STATE - LOnESTAR REvUE is a concept of a cross-country meeting of the minds between California and Texas musicians. All have known each other for years.

Singer and Harmonica master MARK HUMMEL (born in New Haven, Connecticut and raised in Los Angeles) has been on the road steadily since 1984 and has released 17 albums and CDs since starting out. His latest is a Little Walter Tribute called Blue and Lonesome. Hummel has recorded for Flying Fish, Tone Cool and ElectroFi Records (his current) labels since the early ‘90s. Mark’s playing has been noted by his peers, as he has been nominated three years in a row for Best Harmonica by the Blues Music Awards.

LITTLE CHARLIE BATY (Sacramento, CA) is the former leader and masterful guitarist from Alligator Records recording act “Little Charlie & the Nightcats.” Charlie and the Nightcats have recorded 12 albums on Alligator and have been one of the West Coast’s most successful blues acts, touring the globe for over 25 years.

ANSON FUNDERBURGH (Dallas, TX) has spent the majority of his adult life playing the blues with his band The Rockets featuring Sam Myers. Anson has earned the respect of artists like Delbert McClinton, Boz Scaggs, Jimmie & Stevie Ray Vaughan and Ronnie Earl. Over the years, these musicians have called on Anson to lend his tremendous guitar talents to their projects. Since the passing of long-time musical partner Sam Myers, Anson has concentrated on raising a family, working very local gigs and performing at a smattering of festivals around the world. Now Anson has caught a renewed dose of the performing bug and is performing more regularly throughout the U.S. and abroad.

BiLLy BRAnCh & ThE SOnS OF ThE BLUESBILLY BRANCH has followed a very non-traditional path to the blues. Unlike many blues artists, he isn’t from the South. Billy was born in Chicago in 1951 and was raised in Los Angeles. He first picked up a harmonica at the age of ten and immediately began to play simple tunes. Billy returned to Chicago in the summer of ‘69 and graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in political science. He soon became immersed in the local blues scene, spending a great deal of time at legendary blues clubs such as Queen Bee’s and Theresa’s Lounge, learning from such stalwart harmonica players as Big Walter Horton, James Cotton, Junior Wells and Carey Bell.

He made his first recording for Barrelhouse Records and began to work as an apprentice harp player in Willie Dixon’s Chicago Blues All-Stars. He eventually replaced Carey Bell and worked with Willie Dixon for six years. Billy has recorded and/or performed with an incredible list of Blues legends including: Muddy Waters, Big Walter Horton, Son Seals, Lonnie Brooks, Koko Taylor, Johnny Winter, and Albert King. In 1990, he appeared with three harp legends--Carey Bell, Junior Wells, and James Cotton on W.C. Handy Award winner, Harp Attack! Billy is also passing on the blues tradition to a new generation through his Blues In The Schools program. He is a dedicated blues educator and has taught in the Chicago school system for over twenty years as part of the Urban Gateways Project.

SMOkin’ JOE kUBEk & BnOiS kingJOE KUBEK was raised in Irving, Texas, and while still a teenager was playing guitar in the band of the original Texas Cannonball, Freddie King. Kubek went on to forge his aggressive guitar style fronting his own band, and backing many legendary blues artists throughout the ‘70s and ‘80s, including Al “TNT” Braggs, Little Joe Blue, and others. Influenced by the hard-rocking blues of the ‘60s and ‘70s, Kubek’s guitar playing smolders with the same fire that burned in the styles of Stevie Ray Vaughan and Johnny Winter, earning him the well-deserved nickname “Smokin’ Joe.” B

BNOIS KING is a native of Monroe, Louisiana. His musical influences come from a generation earlier than Kubek’s, with the smoother sounds of T-Bone Walker and B.B. King in evidence, along with some of the soulful and jazzier sounds of the 1950s and ‘60s. He was fronting his own band in the ‘80s when he first met Kubek backstage at someone else’s gig. Together this unlikely pair forged a musical bond that has not only lasted the test of time, but continues to flourish. Joe’s hard-edged guitar provides the perfect counter-balance for the jazzy guitar and deep blues vocals of Bnois. King serves to keep their music rooted in the tradition, while Kubek stretches out and provides an energy that has been thrilling audiences over the twenty-plus years of their partnership.

“King’s jazzy guitar work is the perfect foil to Kubek’s more incendiary style. They are simply the best guitar tandem on the scene today.” - Blues Revue

MiTCh wOOdS & hiS ROCkET 88’SMITCH WOODS and His Rocket 88’s have been the torchbearers of a great American blues musical heritage, not for three years but three decades. Taking their inspiration from the great jump n’ boogie outfits of the late ‘40s and early ‘50s, they breathe fresh life into the music that gave birth to rock n’ roll. Woods styled his group after the jumpin’ n’ jivin’, shoutin’ n’ honkin’, pumpin’ n’ poundin’ bands of Louis Jordan, Wynonie Harris, Joe and Jimmy Liggins, Amos Milburn, and Roy Milton. Adding a healthy dose of New Orleans rhythm and blues, piledrivin’ piano, and some of his own contemporary playful lyrics, Woods and His Rocket 88’s forge their own brand of music they call “rock-a-boogie.”

In 2007 Mitch was nominated for Pinetop Perkins Piano Player of the Year Award at the Blues Awards in Memphis. Presented by the Blues Foundation, this is one of the highest achievements a blues musician can earn. Mitch continues to tour worldwide with both his Rocket 88’s and Big Easy Boogie. He has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious music festivals and venues.

Big JOE & ThE dynAFLOwSJOE MAHER a/k/a “Big Joe” has been in the music biz over 40 years, starting out in his high school jazz band “The Starliners.” Musician greats like Clark Terry, Urbie Green, Mudell Lowe & James Moody often sat in as guest performers and were an inspiration. After high school Joe went immediately on the road with his own jazz trio.

Over time, he shared the stage and backed up blues legends such as Johnny Adams, Johnnie Johnson, Jimmy McCracklin, Floyd Dixon, Jimmy Rogers, Jimmy Witherspoon, Bullmoose Jackson, James “Thunderbird” Davis, Nappy Brown, Otis Rush and Earl King. In the late ‘80s after performing with and managing the 9-piece swing band “The Uptown Rhythm Kings,” and after a few years as drummer with the Tom Principato Band, Joe formed his own 5-piece jump blues group “Big Joe & The Dynaflows.” In 1997, Big Joe and his band had the honor to perform at an Inauguration Party for President Bill Clinton in Washington, DC. The Dynaflows’ release I’m Still Swingin’ on Severn Records, received the Washington Area Music Association (WAMA) “Best Blues Recording” in 1998. WAMA also voted Big Joe “Male Blues Vocalist of the Year” both in 2005 and 2009. Other Dynaflow releases include All Night Long and You Can’t Keep a Big Man Down on the Severn label, Layin’ in the Alley on New Orleans-based Black Top Records, which received the (WAMA) “Best Blues Recording” in 1994, Good Rockin’ Daddy on the Powerhouse label and Cool Dynaflow, which was a European release.

STACy BROOkSSTACY BROOKS started singing at the age of 5 in Zweibruken Germany at an Army show, and after her first standing ovation there was no looking back. Fast forward to the present, with her diverse background she continues to give you toe tapping, head bobbing feel good music that crosses all barriers. Since she began her quest of the blues, she has been working nonstop, bridging the age gap on the blues circuit and importing fans from other genres. In her short time on the blues circuit she has shared the stage with blues greats Kenny Neal, Grammy Award winner Sugar Blue, guitar legend Bobby Parker, Memphis Gold, Lil Dave Thompson (R.I.P.) Ronnie Baker Brooks, Grammy nominated Billy Branch, Eddie Shaw, Willie “Big Eyes” Smith (R.I.P.), and Bob Stroger, just to name a few. Her arrangements keep the integrity of traditional Chicago and Delta Blues while adding a spruce of rejuvenation.

In July of 2011, The Stacy Brooks Band competed and won The Battle of The Bands at The Sedalia Blues Festival in Big Island, Virginia, and represented in Memphis at the International Blues Challenge in January 2012.

The highly anticipated Love Peace and The Blues CD was released in September 2011 to wonderful reviews and airplay. Bluesmen Kenny Neal and Memphis Gold are co-producers of the CD along with Stacy. The CD includes a duet with Kenny Neal, and she wrote and arranged 12 of the 14 songs. The CD also includes German lyrics to pay tribute to her German background.

JUkES BOOgiE BAndTypically an acoustic group, THE JUKES BOOGIE BAND is performing as an electric blues band that serves up original and classic swing, jump, boogie and blues in a very unique and powerful setting. The core band, the Jukes Boogie Trio, is made up of TOM DIKON on harmonica and vocals, ELDON SULLY on guitar and vocals, and RICH RIDOLFINO on bass guitar and vocals. The addition of MIKE WILLIAMS on drums rounds out the four-piece ensemble. Tom’s harmonica work has been featured on several recording labels across the East Coast. He’s performed across the U.S. and Europe, is a 2011 Hampton Roads International Blues Challenge Winner, and has an artist’s endorsement with Hohner Harmonicas. Recently, Tom and bassist Rich Ridolfino recorded with legendary Chicago sax player Eddie Shaw on the CD Still Riding High as members of the “757 All-Stars.”

AnThOny ROSAnO & ThE COnqUEROOSLongtime friends ANTHONY ROSANO (guitar and vocals) and PAUL WARREN (bass) started the CONQUEROOS as an outlet for the “blues muse” that is the undercurrent to all that is musical. The two have played together numerous times at jams and as fill-in musicians for other projects. After meeting JACK CAMPBELL (harp) and DION DAVIS (drums) “the Conqueroos” were born. The Conqueroos draw on varied musical influences and a common love for the Blues. Blues all funked up, that’s the recipe. Influenced by The Meters, Mofro, and Col. Bruce Hampton, mix in a heavy dose of Rory Gallagher and the Allman Brothers, and simmer in a gumbo of Muddy, Wolf, and the three Kings ‘tll sweaty and groovin’. Anthony Rosano & The Conqueroos won NBN’s local International Blues Challenge (IBC) in July of 2012, and went on to represent Hampton Roads at the IBC competition in Memphis, TN in January 2013.

Blues CD Review - Rainey WetnightTodd Wolfe BandMiles to GoAmerican Showplace Musichttp://www.toddwolfe.com

Blues artists are sometimes known for the company they keep. Take Todd Wolfe, a band mate and collaborator with Sheryl Crow 1993 - 98. Hers is a household name in the world of pop, and his has long been connected with blues rock. According to his website, “Todd began playing on the New York scene back in 1979 with his band Nitetrain, a trio that clearly reflected Todd’s influences - 60’s bands like Cream, Jimi Hendrix, Fleetwood Mac and other bluesy-rocky-jamming bands.” “Miles to Go,” his eighth album since departing Sheryl’s ensemble, pays refreshing homage to these legends of more than fifty years ago. With that said, only two songs out of ten on this CD are covers (Howlin Wolf’s “Forty Four” and George Harrison’s “The Inner Light”). These three originals are especially catchy:

Track 02: “Sunnyvale”--This low-down acoustic stomp should have given “Miles to Go” a running start as its first track. Its chorus contains a shadow of the grisly image of Golgotha: “I’ve got chills for you, honey; I’m burning from the frost. Way to treat a man when he’s hanging from the cross!” One might wonder where the song’s title comes from, because it’s not mentioned. However, there’s no doubt of the source of the band’s inspiration: its red-hot mojo. Fans of Too Slim and the Taildraggers will love “Sunnyvale.”

Track 05: “Day to Day”--Being on the “rock” side of blues rock isn’t always a bad thing. Witness “Day to Day,” an electric-guitar thrill ride that pulls no punches about hard times: “To all the pundits and preachers and the silence they’re giving, I say I’m living, yes, I’m living day to day.” That particular refrain is a definite earworm, and the tempo of this fifth track is the most danceable on the album.

Track 06: “I Stand Alone”--Almost as mellow and poignant as Eric Clapton’s “Tears in Heaven,” Wolfe’s second acoustic ballad combines confession and redemption: “No sweet caress to comfort me, no touch from a gentle soul. My heart, it aches from loneliness, but I know I’ve miles to go. Miles to go, miles from home.” At some point in our lives, nearly all of us can relate to Todd’s sentiments here, and that’s why they strike such a universal chord.

Alongside Wolfe are Roger Voss on drums, percussion, and backing vocals, and bassist and background vocalist Justine Gardner. He also gives special thanks to John Ginty on organ and piano, Steve Guyger on harmonica and Sweet Suzi on backing vocals. He may not be in Sheryl Crow’s band anymore, but Todd Wolfe is certainly in good company now, with many more “Miles to Go” in their blues career!.

Reviewer Rainey Wetnight is a 33 year old female Blues fan. She brings the perspective of a younger blues fan to reviews. A child of 1980s music, she was strongly influenced by her father’s blues music collection.

BLUES CD REVIEW - by Brian “The BLuesman” BeachumBUddy gUyRhythm & BluesRCA/Silvertone Records 88883-75780-2www.buddyguy.net

Buddy Guy’s latest collections of CDs have been in the realm of different forms of conceptual ventures. From Blues Singer and Sweet Tea to Living Proof in 2010, they all have formed a concert that worked in Buddy’s way to tell the story he was putting down. In his latest release, Rhythm & Blues, he splits the story into two volumes (CDs) and brings in some friends to help him tell the tale. In this story, it’s also a birthday party, Buddy’s 77th.

The first CD in the set, Rhythm, has eleven fine cuts. The CD starts out with “Best In Town,” which seems to be Buddy singing about Buddy. He brings in Kid Rock on, what else, the Junior Wells classic “Messin’ with the Kid”! Keith Urban stops in to play a bit of Country R&B with Buddy on “One Day Away.” This is a nice crossover cut that could get Buddy some airplay on some different station formats. With some of the folks and styles Buddy is hitting with on this CD, that just might be one of his goals. To hit back to the roots of what R&B is all about, Buddy brings in Beth Hart on a smokin’ number, “What You Gonna Do About Me,” complete with a killer horn section to just add to the heat. It’s one of the best cuts on the two CDs, in my opinion.

The second CD, Blues, cuts right to the chase with the opening cut, “Meet Me In Chicago,” a kickin’ piece paying a nice tribute to you-know-where. Tom Hambridge produced both CDs and he wrote most of the material on the Blues CD and some on the Rhythm one, too. It would have been better if he’d included more classic cuts and concentrated on just producing. Buddy also brings in some friends on this CD as well. Some of the Aerosmith band (Steven Tyler, Joe Perry and Brad Whitford) drops by to try out some Chicago blues on “Evil Twin.” Buddy is Steven’s senior by quite a bit, but Buddy’s voice and guitar work is smoother by a mile. Buddy’s last guest drop-in is Gary Clark Jr. He joins in on “Blues Ain’t Fair” for a jumping lil’ number. The Blues CD ends with the nice horn-blowin’ number “Poison Ivy.”

I will say, out of two CDs, the Rhythm CD is without-a-doubt the stronger of the two musically. They are both fine examples of Buddy Guy’s guitar work and his great Chicago style of the blues and, as a set, offer an extension of his playing styles and range.

NBN’s MISSION• Promote, perpetuate, and preserve Blues music as a true American art form.

• Develop and provide an educational resource for the community (i.e. schools, churches, civic organizations, etc.) as to the history and evolution of the Blues.

• Disseminate information to and act as a network for Blues musicians and others interested in the Blues, both locally and nationally.

• Advocate and work toward an increase in contributed support for the Blues in the Greater Hampton Roads area.

Australian native Kara Grainger is a wonderful slide guitarist in her own right. She is often

compared to the likes of great blues women such as Bonnie Raitt. This, her third CD release but

her first release on Eclecto Groove Records, proves to be a winner. She teams up with acclaimed

producer and engineer David Z, who worked with blues greats such as Buddy Guy, Jonny Lang and Ana Popovic.

On her latest release, Shiver & Sigh, she kicks it into gear with a combination of soul, blues rock, and bit of dancing beach

beat with a few of my favorite cuts. From the traditional blues like Robert Johnson’s classic “C’mon in My Kitchen,” to Kara’s

original title tune, “Shiver & Sigh,” to the Honky-Tonk “No Way You Can Hurt Me Now,” to the funky “You’re the One.”

This CD delivers on all the marks. Pick up the CD and give this Aussie a spin. You won’t be disappointed. She’ll make you

Blues CD Reviews - Scott ThomasgARy hOEyDeja BluesWazoo Music Group

Gary Hoey sent me his newest most recent album Deja Blues not long ago and I have finally found the time to sit down to write a music review. I have listened to the CD several times now and I must say that the album is an alluring assemblage… the cat’s meow of some righteous blues-rock songs if you will.

When fellow music patrons think of guitarist Gary Hoey, they think of instrumental shredders in the realm of Satriani, Vai and others of that high caliber. However, with this collection of tunes, he’s more in the arena of Eric Clapton, Joe Bonamassa, Jon Butcher and Eric Gales. As I read the CD jewel case’s inner sleeve, I noticed that Hoey has written most of the songs with only a couple of exceptions.

The opening tune “Boss You Around” is an up-tempo, straight ahead, tight blues vamp that’s impeccably delivered. Gary’s vocals are commanding and emotive. And of course his guitar playing is exactly what the doctor ordered. Did someone say electrifying? The next creation called “Boot Mill Blues” is a fast, hard-driving boogie-woogie featuring catchy vocals and some illuminated harp playing by brother in music James Montgomery. “Almost Over You” slows things down a bit and gives you that smoky juke joint sound, with the low down but silky smooth organ explorations. Jon Butcher lays it down with the guitar duties here. Again, Brother Gary’s vocal timbres are spot on. Next up to bat is the infamous cover by Don Nix, “Going Down,” and let me tell ya, Hoey tears it up! This is one of those tunes where he lets his hair down and really shows off his guitar prowess. “She’s Walking” is a mid-tempo shuffle that has some fine slide guitar playing on it by the capable Johhny A. This is a down and dirty, foot stomp’n track for sure.

Gary Hoey has recorded 19 albums and had five top-20 Billboard hits, and has been called one of the top 100 guitarists of all time. As writer, producer, and guitar player, Hoey’s clients have included Disney, ESPN, and No Fear, and he has performed the National Anthem for the New England Patriots, San Diego Padres, and the Boston Red Sox. The maestro has been featured on VH1 Classic’s documentary “Aftermath,” and has guest starred alongside Michael Anthony, Ace Frehley, and Dave Mason, among others, at the Rock N Roll Fantasy Camp in Los Angeles, which debuts as a special series on VH1 Classics. And in 2012, my man recently produced and co-wrote for “The Queen Of Metal” Lita Ford’s latest release Living Like A Runaway for SPV records to rave reviews, “It was a thrill to work with Lita, she is a true rocker, a pioneer for women in rock, and she’s a kick ass guitar player.” Hoey has toured and traded licks with the likes of Jeff Beck, Brian May of Queen, Ted Nugent, Joe Satriani, The Doobie Brothers, Foreigner, Styx, Steve Vai, Peter Frampton, and Dick Dale.

The next stand out song “Stranger” is a slow and sensuous vibration with satin vocals, mesmerizing lyrics and sizzling tone-full blues licks, which sets you up for the next stately smoking tune, “Born Under A Bad Sign.” This is definitely a stunning performance with substance. Tune number eight “Got To Believe”’s performance is rich with intensity and feeling. Again, the backing slide-guitar work is rip-roaring thanks to the talents of Frank Hannon. The self-titled tune “Deja Blues” is a melodic blues instrumental of the highest order. The crisp, clean distortion sound jumps off of the master’s axe. Definitely some nice tasty guitar work here for the soul. And lastly, we have the foot tapping, feel good tune “Hold Your Head Up High.” Lots of finesse and plenty of tone with the slide guitar work, and his voice and lyrics are a perfect fit.

In closing, what we have here is a fine collection of classic rock’n blues. Gary Hoey is one very talented Kat and a faithful student of the blues. There are also plenty of fret burning, full-tilt roots-boogies, simmering shuffles and catchy vamps. Overall the production sounds fresh and is a definite expression of dedication to the blues icons before him. Excellent songwriting, production, and musicianship and highly recommended!

Ah the fickle finger of fate. So often in the music business, serendipity kicks in and lends a hand in matching up two or more individuals who would otherwise never cross paths. Thus was the case with Doug and Dennis. A mutual friend suggested they get together when Doug was getting ready to go on tour and needed something new and fresh. Dennis got the phone call one evening, drove through the night from New Jersey to Michigan, stopping only for a yogurt, and hopped right on The Jewel Tones tour bus. Phew! That’s the nature of the music business in a nutshell more than we’d care to know. That was serendipitous indeed--new and fresh indeed, also.

The line-up: Doug Deming - guitar & vocals. Dennis Gruenling - harmonica. Andrew Goldman -upright and Fender bass. Devin Neel - drums & vocals. Anthony Smith - harmonica track 7 (who by the way is a monster harp player himself)

The Tracks:“Think Hard” - This is a Deming original. Classic swing blues number.“One Good Reason” - Another Deming original. This one has a solid rockabilly beat.“Poison Ivy” - This is the Willie Mabon version, not the Leiber & Stoller version. Dennis plays some great Little Walter style harp on this cut.“No Big Thrill” - This is the cut where we hear Anthony Smith. Slow blues at its best.“A Pretty Girl (A Cadillac And Some Money)” - I always liked hearing the Nighthawks’ version of this song. These guys do a slower version of this Buddy Johnson original. And it’s smooth as silk - very cool.
