O Monitor blood sugar levels with the use of a glucometer
O A glucometer reads the amount of sugar in the blood - usually a small amount of blood placed on a test strip or drawn into a test strip
O Many different types of glucometers on the market.O Important - Know how to properly use the specific
monitor and keep it accessible at all times.

Tips for Using GlucometerO Follow instructionsO Coding – make sure code on bottle of strips or
code chip matches code in monitorO Store strips appropriately per instructionsO Prepare hands – Hand washing preferred. If
use hand sanitizer – make sure sanitizer has completely dried before using lancet.
O Adequate blood sample needed.

containerO Record blood sugar level in log bookO Parent may need copy of log book of
glucometer readings for doctor visitsO Follow guidelines in the DMMP ( Diabetes
Medical Management Plan ) for treatment of high and low blood sugars.

Checking Blood SugarsO How often? Usually several times each day.O When to check blood sugar?
Meals: Before and possibly 2 hours after meals
Exercise: Before and after exercise Whenever: The student feels
“different or funny”
Follow the guidelines in the DMMP.

IMPORTANT REMINDERSO Glucometer must be accessible to student at all
times. O Must make arrangements for glucometer at
recess, field trips, on bus, and any other time during the school day.
O School employees need to be instructed in the use of the glucometer.
O If possible at least 2 employees in each building should be trained on how to use the glucometer.

IMPORTANT REMINDERSO The parent/guardian is responsible for supplying
the school with all the supplies needed for the glucometer.
O A plan should be put in place for the student to be able to test his/her blood sugar in the classroom.
O If a student is feeling “funny” or “not feeling well”, the student must not be left alone or sent to the office alone.
