My dear parishioners, In the months since I spoke to all of you about the present sexual abuse crisis in the Church, I have found that my prayer life has gotten stronger. Praying with all of you at Mass, saying the St. Michael the Archangel Prayer after Mass, the holy hour of reparation has done much for me to focus my prayer in a different way. I am grateful to God for showing me even more of His love. In the course of my prayer, a constant thought has come about and that is the need for a ministry of intercession. Very often people would ask me to pray for them for many different reasons and I try to remember them all. Sometimes certain events in the parish could use prayerful assistance. Many times, I need to ask for help from others for special in-tentions. With all of these thoughts in mind, I would like to extend an invitation to all of you to see who would be interest-ed in being an intercessor for our parish. It will not require meetings and stuff like that. Anyone can do it, whether you are homebound, a student, full time worker, retired or a stay home parent. All you need to do is promise that you will pray for the intentions given to you. My thought is to gather intentions and send out peri-odic emails requesting prayerful assistance for general inten-tions and for specific ones as well. If you do not use email, that is fine, we can communicate old fashioned ways like by tele-phone or letter. You can fulfill the requests by offering a ro-sary, making a holy hour before the Blessed Sacrament, dedi-cating morning or evening prayers to an intention, offering up a holy communion for the intention, make a sacrifice, prayer-fully read Scripture, recite the Divine Mercy chaplet, etc. Not only will this help in the mission of the parish, I believe it will bring us closer together as a parish family. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states “Intercession is a prayer of petition which leads us to pray as Jesus did. He is the one intercessor with the Father on behalf of all men, especially sinners. He is "able for all time to save those who draw near to God through him, since he always lives to make intercession for them." The Holy Spirit "himself inter-cedes for us . . . and intercedes for the saints according to the will of God." Since Abraham, intercession - asking on behalf of another has been characteristic of a heart attuned to God's mercy. In the age of the Church, Christian intercession participates in Christ's, as an expression of the communion of saints. In intercession, he who prays looks "not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of oth-ers," even to the point of praying for those who do him harm. The first Christian communities lived this form of fellowship intense-ly. Thus the Apostle Paul gives them a share in his ministry of preaching the Gospel but also intercedes for them. The intercession of Christians recognizes no boundaries: "for all men, for kings and all who are in high positions," for persecutors, for the salvation of those who reject the Gospel. Mis queridos feligreses, En los meses que han transcurrido desde que hablé acerca de la actual crisis de abuso sexual en la Iglesia, he visto que mi vida de oración es más fuerte. Orando con todos ustedes en la Misa, rezando la oración a San Miguel Arcángel después de la Misa, la hora santa de reparación ha hecho mucho por mí para enfocarme en la oración de una forma diferente. Estoy agradecido con Dios por mostrarme aún más Su amor. En el curso de mi oración, he tenido un pensamiento cons-tante y es la necesidad de un ministerio de intercesión. Muy a menudo la gente me pide que ore por ellos por diferentes razones y trato de recordarlos todos. Algunas veces ciertos eventos en la parroquia po-drían usar ayuda en la oración. Muchas veces, necesito ayuda de otros para intenciones especiales. Con todos estos pensamientos en mi men-te, quisiera extender una invitación a todos ustedes para ver quien podría estar interesado en ser un intercesor para nuestra parroquia. No se requiere asistir a reuniones ni nada por el estilo. Cualquiera lo pue-de hacer, ya sea que esté confinado en casa, un estudiante, un trabaja-dor de tiempo completo, un jubilado o un padre de familia que no trabaje fuera de casa. Todo lo que necesita hacer es prometer que usted orará por las intenciones que se le den. Mi pensamiento es reunir intenciones y enviar correo elec-trónicos de vez en cuando pidiendo ayuda por intenciones en general y por intenciones específicas también. Si usted no usa correo electróni-co, está bien, nos podemos comunicar de la forma antigua, como por teléfono o por carta. Puedes cumplir las peticiones ofreciendo un rosa-rio, haciendo una hora santa ante el Santísimo Sacramento, dedicando Laudes o Vísperas, ofreciendo la sagrada comunión por esa intención, haciendo un sacrificio, orando con las Sagradas Escrituras, rezando la Coronilla de la Divina Misericordia, etc. No solamente ayudará esto en la misión de la parroquia, yo creo que nos acercará más como familia parroquial. El Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica declara “La intercesión es una oración de petición que nos conforma muy de cerca con la oración de Jesús. Él es el único intercesor ante el Padre en favor de todos los hombres, de los pecadores en particular (cf Rm 8, 34; 1 Jn 2, 1; 1 Tm 2. 5-8). Es capaz de “salvar perfectamente a los que por Él se llegan a Dios, ya que está siempre vivo para interceder en su favor” (Hb 7, 25). El propio Espíritu Santo “intercede por nosotros [...] y su intercesión a favor de los santos es según Dios” (Rm 8, 2627). Interceder, pedir en favor de otro, es, desde Abraham, lo propio de un corazón conforme a la misericordia de Dios. En el tiempo de la Iglesia, la intercesión cristiana participa de la de Cristo: es la expresión de la comunión de los santos. En la intercesión, el que ora busca “no su propio interés sino [...] el de los demás” (Flp 2, 4), hasta rogar por los que le hacen mal (cf. San Esteban rogando por sus verdugos, como Jesús: cf Hch 7, 60; Lc23, 28. 34). Las primeras comunidades cristianas vivieron intensamente esta forma de participación (cf Hch 12, 5; 20, 36; 21, 5; 2 Co 9, 14). El apóstol Pablo les hace participar así en su ministerio del Evangelio (cf Ef 6, 18-20; Col 4, 3-4; 1 Ts 5, 25); él intercede también por las comunidades (cf 2 Ts 1, 11; Col 1, 3; Flp 1, 3-4). La intercesión de los cristianos no conoce fron-teras: “por todos los hombres, por [...] todos los constituidos en autoridad” (1 Tm 2, 1), por los perseguidores (cf Rm 12, 14), por la salvación de los que rechazan el Evangelio (cf Rm 10, 1).
