My dear parishioners, I hope you enjoyed reading of my exploits in Colombia. I am still smiling thinking of my time there. The week after I returned, I went to West Virginia for a priest Scripture conference sponsored by the St. Paul Center for Biblical Theology. I drove there with my classmate, Fr. John McCartney, who celebrated Mass here back in June. Several other priest friends flew in. On the ride there, Fr. McCartney and I decided to visit a few historical battlefields: Harper’s Ferry, Antietam and Fort Necessity. It was a joy to go back into time and to learn more about our nation’s history. The theme for the conference was “Burning Hearts, Eyes Open” taken from the Road to Emmaus resurrection account from St. Luke’s Gospel. We had three outstanding presenters over the course of the week, Doctors Scott Hahn, Ralph Martin and John Bergsma. I always enjoy listening to Dr. Bergsma and he gave three magnificent talks on the major Old Testa-ment prophets: Isaiah, Jeremiah and Ezequiel. Many of us agreed that we learned more in those three talks than we had in our entire time in the seminary on the proph-ets. It was an amazing experience to be with so many priests (well over 200) from around the country to learn more about Sacred Scripture. We had Mass togeth-er each day which was celebrated and preached by Fr. David Meconi SJ. He was so excellent that several of us, in our evaluations, asked that he be brought back next year. We also had holy hour together and more time for fraternity and prayer. I already registered for next year. The weekend after that was Steubenville NYC at St. John’s University. This was the fifth year that we had this youth conference in NY and I am proud to say that our parish has participated each year. 2000 teens attended the conference, including 27 from our parish. We had the largest group from the diocese present. That shows the hard work by our youth minister. Please read the youth reflections in our bulletin about their experi-ences. I was not with our group much because I was hearing the confessions of the youth. Over 1000 of them availed of themselves to this healing sacrament. It was a blessing to share with them the love of Jesus. I am so proud of our teens who truly opened their hearts to Je-sus. So many of them had profound experiences of the Lord and please pray that they remain close to Him. Thank you for your prayers, especially for the mission trip. Mis queridos feligreses, Espero que hayan disfrutado mis aventuras en Co-lombia. Todavía estoy sonriendo pensando en mi tiempo allí. La semana después que regresé, fui a West Virginia para una conferencia para sacerdotes acerca de las Sagradas Escrituras organizada por el Centro Bíblico Teológico San Pablo. Manejé hasta allá con mi compañero de clases, Padre John McCartney, quien celebró Misa aquí en junio pasado. Varios otros sacerdotes amigos viajaron en avión. De ca-mino hacia allá, el Padre McCartney y yo decidimos visitar varios campos de batalla históricos: Harper’s Ferry, Antie-tam and Fort Necessity. Fue muy alegre regresar al pasado y aprender más acerca de la historia de nuestra nación. El tema de la conferencia fue “Corazones Ardien-do, Ojos Abiertos” tomado del Evangelio de San Lucas El Camino de Emaús. Tuvimos tres presentadores excepciona-les en el curso de la semana, Doctores Scott Hahn, Ralph Martin y John Bergsma. Yo siempre disfruto escuchar al Dr. Bergsma y él dio tres charlas magníficas en los mayores Profetas del Antiguo Testamento: Isaías, Jeremías y Eze-quiel. Muchos de nosotros estuvimos de acuerdo en que aprendimos más de esas tres charlas que las que tuvimos en todo nuestro tiempo en el seminario acerca de los profetas. Fue una experiencia maravillosa estar con tantos sacerdotes (más de 200) de alrededor de todo el país para aprender más acerca de las Sagradas Escrituras. Yo ya me registré para el próximo año. El fin de semana después fue Steubenville NYC en la Universidad de St. John. Este fue el quinto año que tuvi-mos esta conferencia juvenil en NY y estoy muy orgulloso de decirles que nuestra parroquia ha participado todos los años. 2000 jóvenes asistieron a la conferencia, incluyendo 27 de nuestra parroquia. Nosotros tuvimos presente el grupo más grande de la diócesis. Esto muestra el arduo trabajo de nuestro ministro juvenil. "So, this is my second year going to Steubenville and let me just say these two times going have been amazing and I have loved it. Spending three days just worshiping and adoring God has been the best days of my life. It just helps me get even closer to God. These past weeks I have actu-ally been questioning my faith a lot and I moved farther away. I didn't want to go to Mass anymore, I didn't want to sing, serve, just nothing involved with church. But Steubenville changed that this year. Ever since I came back, I just thought to myself, 'I want to get close to God.' He loves me and I love Him. He is just so amazing, so good, and when I'm with Him I just feel this peace in my heart, like Him saying everything is going to be okay. He just makes me feel safe in so many ways, like nothing is going to hurt me. And nothing is without His help. Saturday at Adoration really hit me, and I just have felt really re-lieved. Once I came back, my problems don't seem that big to me like they used to. I just learned to accept life as it is. My insecurities just went away, and I can love myself just the way I am, no matter what other people say. I just love myself. I just feel that life is going to be easier with God's help." –Nayeli

"I just want to say that Steubenville was the best thing that happened this summer. At first, I wanted nothing to do with it because I thought it was going to be really boring. I said, 'You know what, I'm going to go into it with an open heart.' I did. We got there, and during check-in I even met new peo-ple. I knew there was going to be a great connection be-tween us. What do you know, by the end of the weekend I have new friends, and these people were people I thought I'd never be friends with. Making new friends was not the best part. Being with Jesus all three days was the best part. The worship songs, the talks, and the Mass were all so great and they made me feel at peace. This weekend in Steubenville made me close to God in faith, and I feel so happy and relieved. I recommend every single teen to go in the following year, because it is a great experience.
