My dear parishioners, Last week I began by writing to you about the Mi-raculous Medal and this week I would like share with you about the novena for the same. A novena is usually a series of prayers said over the course of nine days. The Miraculous Medal novena became so popular, especially after so many graces received, it became a perpetual novena. In this case, it is prayed once every week in parishes around the world. Monday has been the traditional day for the recita-tion of the Miraculous Medal novena. The booklet we use in our parish is The Perpetual Novena In Honor of Our Lady of the Miraculous Medal. It comes from the Central Association of the Miraculous Medal in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is an apostolate of The Congregation of the Mission, also known as the Vincentians, the same group that runs St. John’s Uni-versity here in Queens. The novena begins with the hymn Immaculate Mary. After the Sign of the Cross, the priest or leaders leads the people in prayer to the Holy Spirit. Then three times he says “O Mary, conceived without sin.” and then the people re-spond “Pray for us who have recourse to you.” each time. The priest and people say a prayer together professing belief in the Immaculate Conception of Mary. They jointly recite the Memorare followed by the novena prayer. It is during the novena prayer that we pause and each person privately mentions their petitions. After a moment of silence, the prayer continues. Next is an Act of Consecration to Our La-dy of the Miraculous Medal. That is followed by the invoca-tion “O Mary, conceived without sin” and the response “Pray for us who have recourse to you” three times again. Then we usually end it with the hymn Hail Holy Queen. In other places, it is sometimes celebrated more solemnly with exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, a short sermon and then Benediction. I personally do not wear any kind of jewelry except for the Miraculous Medal, as a sign of my consecration to Mary. I love praying this devotion each week because I have learned so much from the prayers and I love entrusting all those intentions to our Blessed Mother. If you are not able to join us in church for the prayers, you can always pray them elsewhere. We have several extra copies of the booklet in English available in the sacristy. To end, I would like to share with you the prayer of St. Catherine Labouré: “Whenever I go to the chapel, I put my-self in the presence of our good Lord, and I say to him, Lord I am here. Tell me what you would have me to do. If he gives me some task, I am content and I thank him. If he gives me nothing, I still thank him since I do not deserve to receive anything more than that. And then, I tell God everything that is in my heart. I tell him about my pains and joys, and then I listen. If you listen, God will also speak to you, for with the good Lord, you have to both speak and listen. God always speaks to you when you approach him plainly and simply. " God bless,

Mis queridos feligreses, La semana pasada comencé a escribirles acerca de la Medalla Milagrosa y esta semana me gustaría compartirles acerca de la novena de la misma. Una novena es usualmente una serie de oraciones dichas en el transcurso de nueve días. La Medalla Milagrosa se hizo tan popular, especialmente después de que muchas gracias fueron recibidas, y se convir-tió en una novena perpetua. En este caso, se reza una vez a la semana en parroquias alrededor del mundo. Los lunes ha sido el día tradicional en que se reza la novena de la Medalla Milagrosa. El folleto que usamos en nuestra parroquia es La Novena Perpetua en Honor a Nuestra Señora de la Medalla Milagrosa. Viene de la Asociación Central de la Medalla Milagrosa en Filadelfia, Pennsylvania. Es un apostolado de La Congregación de la Misión, también conoci-da como Vicencianos, el mismo grupo que dirige la Universi-dad St. John aquí en Queens. La Novena comienza con el Himno Del Cielo Ha Ba-jado. Después de La Señal de la Cruz, el sacerdote o líder guía a la gente con la oración al Espíritu Santo. Después, dice tres veces “María, concebida sin pecado.” y la gente responde cada vez “Ruega por nosotros que recurrimos a ti.” El sacer-dote y la gente dicen una oración juntos profesando que creen en la Inmaculada Concepción de María. Juntos rezan el Memorare seguido de la oración de la novena. Es durante la oración de la novena que hacemos una pausa y cada persona menciona en privado sus intenciones. Después de un mo-mento de silencio, la oración continua. Seguido es el Acto de Consagración a Nuestra Señora de la Medalla Milagrosa. Esto es seguido por la invocación “María concebida sin pecado” y la respuesta “Ora por nosotros que recurrimos a ti” tres veces nuevamente. Después usualmente terminamos con el himno Salve Regina. En otros lugares, algunas veces se celebra solem-nemente con Exposición del Santísimo Sacramento, una ho-milía corta y después bendición con el Santísimo Sacramento. Personalmente yo no uso joyas excepto por la Meda-lla Milagrosa, como signo de mi consagración a María. Me encanta orar esta devoción cada semana porque he aprendi-do mucho de estas oraciones y me encanta confiar todas esas intenciones a Nuestra Santísima Madre. Si ustedes no se pue-den unir a nosotros en la iglesia para las oraciones, siempre pueden rezarla en otra parte. Tenemos varias copias extras del folleto en inglés disponibles en la sacristía. Para terminar, me gustaría compartirles la oración de Santa Catalina Labouré: “Cada vez que voy a la capilla, me pongo en la presencia de nuestro buen Señor, y le digo, Señor aquí estoy. Choirs at St. Mary's Looking for New Members! Do you or your loved ones enjoy singing? Of course you do! Please consider joining the St. Mary's Adult Choir! We sing once a month on the 4th Sunday of the month at the 10 am Mass and we rehearse at 9:00 am right before the Mass. St. Mary's also offers an incredible chance for children to join a choir with the St. Mary's Children's Choir! The Children's Choir meets once a week on Wednesdays from 5-6 pm to practice our songs. We perform once a month at the 10 am Mass on the 3rd Sunday of each month. Both of these choirs are growing in musical abilities, and we would love to have YOU join us! Invitation to see a movie! For one day only in theaters, the movie Love and Mercy: Faustina will be playing. On Monday, October 28, it will be in select theaters. The one closest to our parish is Regal at Atlas Mall in Glendale at 7 pm only. I invite parishion-ers to join me at the theater that night. The film “dramatizes key moments in St. Faustina’s life and the difficulties and triumphs that accompanied the spread of the (Divine Mercy) message following her death in 1938.”

¿A usted o alguno de sus seres queridos le gusta cantar? ¡Por supuesto que sí! ¡Por favor considere unirse al coro de Adultos de María Auxiliadora! Cantamos una vez al mes el cuarto domingo del mes en la Misa de 10 am y en-sayamos a las 9 am antes de la Misa. ¡María Auxiliadora también ofrece una oportunidad in-creíble para los niños a que se unan al coro de Niños!
