Understanding the Word Luke’s is a gospel of reversals. Tax collectors and sinners dine with Jesus (5:30). The unjust judge fears the widow, who might strike him (18:5). The humble tax collector and not the self-righteous Pharisee is justified (18:14). And in today’s reading, those whose status and wealth could assure them of the best seats at the table are told to step back, “For every one who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted” (14:11). The Lucan Jesus presents us with a social ethic directed as Luke’s own community. Those with means were to invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind to the table. In so doing, they would be fulfilling the words of Isaiah as Jesus had done: “The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to bring glad tidings to the poor” (Lk 4:18).

Reflecting on the Word Many people have been impressed and attracted by the humility of Pope Francis. He lives in two rooms of a hotel, paid his own housing bill the day after his election, made a sandwich to feed his Swiss Guard, invites the poor to eat with him, washes prisoners’ feet, installs bathrooms and showers for homeless people, and brings them in to tour the Sistine Chapel. He also calls the Mafia, the Curia, and all of us to accountability. His humility is humbling and challenging. He walks his talk and the talk of Jesus:

Everyone who humbles self will be exalted. Being humble is simply being truthful about one’s gifts and one’s limitations. Walking on the foot of our gifts, we thank those who affirm them and God for giving them to us along with the ability to develop them. ...To approach Mount Zion and the city of the living God entails walking on both feet: gratitude for our gifts and honesty about our limitations and our sins. In a world that seeks gain, notoriety, and limelight, the humility of Pope Francis is both attractive and counter-cultural. The humility of Jesus comforts and challenges us. God makes a home where we walk on both feet, the wealth of our gifts and the poverty of our weakness. God showers us with the love and mercy knowing our grace and our sin. ...Follow the example of Pope Francis and live the way of Jesus, who humbled himself by taking on every human limitation with the exception of sin, even death. from Living the Word, Year C

Next Sunday, we will celebrate the canonization of Mother Teresa of Kolkata. Cindy Wooden, Catholic News Service, prepared a piece for 8/16/16, stating, “If there is one person who immersed herself in the ‘peripheries’ Pope Francis is drawn to, it was Blessed Teresa of Kolkata.” “If there was one who showed courage and creativity in bringing God’s mercy to the world, like Pope

Stewardship Thought for the Week

“Rather, when you hold a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind; blessed indeed will you be because of their inability to repay you.” Lk 14: 13-14

We have a difficult time with the concept of giving with-out expecting something in return. Even when we give to charity we often want something in return -- a raffle ticket, a dinner, or a chance to play golf. Yet, as Christian stewards, we need to remember that the true reward for our giving awaits us in heaven.

Francis urges, it was the diminutive founder of the Missionaries of Charity.” In the same article, Ken Hackett, U.S. Ambassador to the Holy See, was quoted, “In life and after her death, Mother Teresa faced criticism for not using her fame and contacts to advocate more directly for social and political change to improve the lives of the poor she served. “You can find all the things she wasn’t,” the ambassador said, “but what she was was much more important than what she wasn’t. She was a model and now she will be a saint.”

Pope Francis and Mother Teresa model(ed) for us the essence of today’s gospel message. They model(ed) humility, tirelessly share(d) their gifts and the love of Jesus, and do/did so prayerfully, honestly. Pray to Mother Teresa! Learn more about her life and work, and challenge yourself to be more like her.

PRAYER BEFORE AN ELECTION As we are called to prepare ourselves for the upcoming election, we also pray for the peace and respect needed to move through times of political difference, being aware that we do not all agree on who should govern, but we do agree that we want to make our decisions based upon peace, justice and, as Pope Francis has directed us, mercy. During the weeks preceding our national election, we invite you to set aside one hour – 7:00-8:00 p.m. – to join in prayer. This time will include singing, Scripture, silence, and prayer. There will not be any partisan presentations. We will endeavor to join with others in praying for our country and its leaders. Monday, September 26, please come to the chapel by 7 p.m. Praying in the style of the Taizé community, we will pray with others who may or may not agree with our own political leanings. We will pray in the language of Christ’s love where there is always room for disagreement, but never room for disrespect. This prayer will be ecumenical – this is for our community. Please bring a friend – or a political “enemy” – and let us pray…

Lord God, as the election approaches,

we seek to better understand the issues and concerns

that confront our city/state/country,

and how the Gospel compels us to respond as faithful

citizens in our community.

We ask for eyes that are free from blindness

so that we might see each other as brothers and

sisters,

one and equal in dignity,

especially those who are victims of abuse and

violence, deceit and poverty.

We ask for ears that will hear the cries of children

unborn and those abandoned,

Men and women oppressed because of race or creed,

religion or gender.

We ask for minds and hearts that are open to hearing

the voice of leaders who will bring us closer to Your

Kingdom.

We pray for discernment

so that we may choose leaders who hear Your Word,

live Your love,

and keep in the ways of Your truth

as they follow in the steps of Jesus and His Apostles

and guide us to Your Kingdom of justice and peace.

We ask this in the name of Your Son Jesus Christ and

through the power of the Holy Spirit.
